after reading volo's and getting to the section regarding personalities and things, I couldn't help but create one that is going to contact my players to break him out of his own lair because he is adamant that his minions have him surrounded and booby-trapped all his means of escape.
Dude hell yes, that sounds amazing. Did you manage to work that into a game?
The beholder making the underdark makes sense. They dig a lair and while they slumber stuff moves in. They get paranoid upon seeing this and likely once they kill it they dig deeper. Rinse repeat.

On your point of Dark vision for Beholders, I upgraded the sight to True Sight. Because if nothing can approach a beholder, true sight is something they should inherently have

Even an illusion would do, trick him and get him to face the fake beholder with his Antimagic cone. Have the druid Shapechanger into one. Or try and summon a celestial one? (A celestial... Beholder... Hmmm. I may have an idea....
The zenith of Beholder personality, an extremely hateful, arrogant, xenophobic, cruel, paranoid, insane and evil: has a nightmare powerful enough of his extreme opposite trying to kill him that it manifests a celestial beholder...

Have that face your beholder issues. Eye beams? Main eye is a constant Heal spell, it's eye stalks could be: Banishment, Imprisonment, Sunbeam, Chain Lightning, Disintegrate, Hallow, Hold Monster, Immolation and Telekinesis.

Dude! Beholders are scary as hell! I knew they were powerful but had no idea to what extent. I hope I don't have to face a beholder in any of my campaigns.
A beholder disintegrated 2 and turned 2 to stone of our 6 member 8 level party before we killed it. Pretty epic. It kept rolling 8 and 9's and at one moment one of us was asleep, feared and charmed.
Arcticwulf Level 8? Either your players are OP, or that was homebrewed into a puppy dog. I would NEVER throw that at a level 8 party.

Baldur's Gate definitely had this beholder. He was rather early in the game and gave a pretty poor idea of what a beholder really is. I'm glad to see theyre crazy poweful
When playing a beholder as a DM, remember to tell the players that lazers are shooting off everywhere always in every direction, the attacks on it's round and legendary reaction beams just represent beams aimed at players.

Because in lore it happens in relation to their dreams. They explain it in the video. Sometimes they don't get to chose if they change shape.
I'm biased towards undead, so my favourite is the Death Tyrant.
The power level is also much more open ended because of the potential size of the undead army.

Straight up: plain old beholder is my favorite. Partly because the original old favorite, but also because they're f'ing crazy. I love them so much
So I know sometimes dragons can shapeshift. But can Beholders do it? And what if the death beams negated each other and ended up birthing ANOTHER beholder

Beholders are too xenophobic to ever shift into something that is so utterly inferior. It would be an absolute insult to it's dignity as a creature.

The beholder are so much scarier than dragons because they're so unpredictable with all of those deadly types of spells they can cast with those eyes plus they're smart too and can hate out and get rid of your xp for killing it effectively wasting your adventure time

One beholder theory I heard was that beholders are born from the dreams of an astral dreadnoughts that falls asleep looking into a portal into the physical realm.

Zanathar is the first boss in Baldurs gate. Such a good game and such good memories.
I know this is an old episode so this will probably never be seen but just a couple things. the beholder in baldurs gate is Lord xantam. he was actually the first major boss in baldurs gate dark alliance, awesome game.
favorite beholder is a tie between classic beholder and death tyrant. I have a love of the undead but the classic is so awesome.
imagine a Hive Queen with an army of Death Tyrants each one with an army of Undeath... :)

If I ever use a Beholder in one of my Dungeons & Dragons games I would roleplay it like a Dalek from Doctor Who. Voice and everything.

I was thinking of a beholder that dream of what would happen if he was not paranoid and crazy and so create a good and sane beholder that try to be a good guy and use the party to kill other beholder to purge the world
Does the anti-magic cone affect psionics? I am looking to run an underdark campaign where Beholders and Mind Flayers have "issues". Who would dominate in such encounters insofar as a "master to follower" relationship ?
I don't believe there is a ruling yet for 5e. 3.5 had variant rules for this situation, so i would say it does if you want it to.
Illithids have numbers on their side and the hyper intelligence of their elder brains to guide them, but Beholders are hyper intelligent forces of nature that are difficult to take down let alone control. BUT mind flayers are known to capture and subjugate beholders by turning them into Mind Witnesses.

do beholders have to give up their big eye to practice magic in 5e?
In previous editions, there were beholders that did remove their center eye in order to better practice the arcane arts. Their central eye's anti-magic field made things too difficult otherwise.
I consider using beholders in my game sometimes, then I get scared and decide not to. They are nasty!
I do have one in my campaign now, but he is very hard to get to.
Yea.. see i have one in my homebrew that is litterally running the adventures guild. The players found out since they had to meet with them... he isnt really evil honestly.. but he runs everything that has to do with the guild on several continent's. I have another one that they will fight later on as part of this story arc there on especially since someone has a magic djinn dagger... but to get the first wish they need a "eye of a beholder" to even get the djinn to give a wish. So yea lol i love beholders and what they can do. But the other one they have to fight is in a mega dungeon that is on this continent and such.

So I know you said a beholder could taken on an ancient dragon given time to plan but are you sure? The beholder is only cr 13 by itself (14 if in its lair) but 13 is only the result of an adult white dragon which is the weakest of dragons. The ancient version of the white is a 20. Now I know there are other factors for how difficult a creature really is despite cr bit that is still a pretty huge gap between them.
Oh my... I had no idea I was so self-obsessed! I dream about myself EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! Only spawn imperfect clones once in a while, though... fuck those guys. Seriously. Fuck. Those. Guys...
How dod beholders become a part of D&D? Did they come from some literature or were created just for the game?
Say a beholder hive queen with (maybe through magical artifacts) obscenely high magical ability controlled 10 insanely op elder orb beholders 100 death tyrants each who all coerced 10 beholders into fighting for them adding up to 1000 beholders with templates allowing them to be a level 9 sorcerer 100 death tyrants 10 elder orbs that act as level 20+ epic sorcerers and and a hive queen plus 1 million undead of all types up to the stuff in an epic level handbook from 10k undead per death tyrant would they be able to make the abyss win the blood war take over a celestial plane kill a good aligned diety incinerate toril or worse etc.

shamusfarmer I don't believe so. If the rulebook says it's anti magic, then it's anti magic.
I think most gods use celestal and necrotic powers rather then just pure magic.
This is power from faith and soul, not of the magic in the world.
