Oh my fireballs. I NEVER thought I would be laughing at Lord Soth. Great show. (FYI He is evil, tragic and interesting as all get out. So sharp that Ravenloft ‘s Forces couldn’t hold him. If you want a understanding of a good villain as a player, DM or Writer, you have to read his stories and the works with him.)
My first introduction to death knights was through warcraft 3 and the story of arthas, then eventually played one in wrath of the lich king. The concept is so metal and awesome! Thanks for covering this :)
Soth is one of my all time favorite characters. The short story where enters Barovia and is wandering around Strahd’s castle is awesome. Those two were like Deniro and Pacino in Heat.
A death knight could be so full of self loathing to the point that they would want to redeem themselves but due their horrible and terrifying appearance. Could be a fun adventure hook for a low level party... mysterious stranger in a tavern hiring upstart adventurers for seemingly unrelated quests for the end goal of cultivating heroes to replace him and to balance his misdeeds. Eventually the party matures and the gods judge the knight’s penance and he can pass on. Ooooooorrrr the party turns from the path of good and now has a vengeful all powerful undead mother fucker/former ally hunting them.
The fact is that a death knight husualy see himself as the victim and believes to be pure, not a traitor but betrayed not a mass slaughter but a fair Aldo tough ruler ecc ecc...
when you guys were talking about what would happen if a death knight ritual failed, I was thinking that maybe they're so is found eternally to their body, but the magic to animate the body is not there. If there remains are then crafted into some kind of item, that item could be sentient.
Great video, also ran a Paladin with the Oath of Conquest like he was a Judge from Final Fantasy and that oath works so well for an lawful evil paladin.
I think the obvious piece here is the deathknight had to kill someone they loved to become a death knight or it was heavily implied. Being able to summon the spirit of the loved one to confront the deathknoght might create the situation to atone for his sins and kill himself.
Witch King would be quite a bit less than a typical Death Knight considering the negative plane of existence being directly present through it. The Witch King & others would effectively be coerced by any given Death Knight.....
I know Darth Vader isn’t “technically” dead but he is a great look at a death knight in Star Wars. He is a champion of good and justice and basically he falls so far that he murders children. The only thing keeping him alive are the machines but when we read about his thoughts, he hates his existence and his master just like a death knight.
Yeah my dm decided to have 3 half storm giant 12 foot tall death knight brothers that ride in on 3 zombie dragons all of which were red dragons. They could also attack 8 times in one round, and have the strength to dual wield 10 foot long greatswords in each hand.
Think about this. The most famous and well known Death Knight of all time is none other than Darth Vader. Think about it. Originally, the death knight was a fallen paladin. Death was not a requirement. Though, in the process, the fallen paladin passed into undeath. While I I know that Atican (sp, sorry) didn't die before being rescued, He was so close to death that I believe this scenario applies. Please tell me what y'all think.
Ihsan's Shade from MtG Homelands set could arguably be called a Deathknight. Would make a cool big baddie. Actually, that whole set which wasn't that mechanically powerful as a card set would make a good re-vamp for D&D.
I'm in the process of building a 5e campaign using my current half elf paladin of vengeance that's in my buddies homebrew setting one of the good things about the end of Dragonlance publication is the fact that I can be a little free with current events.
Lord Soth is a beast. If you want to know more about him, he shows up in the Chronicles and Ledgened Trillogy in the DragonLance series and then gets two books in Ravenloft called Knight of the Black Rose and Specter of the Black Rose. The books are sometimes just so so, but Soth is consistantly a force to be reckoned with.
Wait a minute. Anakin was the chosen one, he turned to the dark side, committed atrocities like killing the younglings, was left for dead, then came back as a powerful fighter with dark armor and aligned himself with an extremely evil individual. Death Vader is a death Knight
I haven't played D&D in years, but a couple of good friends want to do a campaign. I'm getting some new books and DM guides... What DM books have info on Lord Soth??? I LOVE death Knights and specifically Lord Soth... So needless to say, I'd like to use him in this campaign. Any info would help greatly guys.
How come D&D five he does not have the race of Kindares? When I was a young teenager playing dungeons and dragons. We had some of the best times playing a kinder. So my question is why doesn’t the ND5E have the kinder? Or would it be OK to buy a third or second edition manual and just play a kinder and five he?
I'm not even OCD about stuff like this, but if I was your bookshelves being off center from screen to screen would be driving me crazy, especially when you were conchiencios enough to use a different set of books on each side
Yes I know I spelled con·sci·en·tious wrong, I read it back and pictured a polite conch offering a fish a seat at his table, so I left it like that and besides I didn't want a edit notation by my comment.
Lord Soths end is ridiculous and anticlimactic. They are now apparently trying to retcon that whole terrible plotline involving Minn and the alien dragons etc. I sincerely hope that is what they do.
18:00 that moment when you realize you recite broken psyches so as to elaborate a crisis instead of laying all your cards out. Facing the screen to the left, his facial expression (rebuking, disgust & neigh fury in fact...) said it. 😏🙃🤫
If there’s anything wrong with that post I just posted please be kind I am legally blind I do the best I can. Thank you all have a awesome merry Christmas Christmas
18:45 the 9th level spell imprisonment can do that. Why don't more people use that spell? It solves all your problems! Or atleast all of your problems that can't cast 9th level dispel magic... But Death Knights can't do that! Just lock the idiot in a gem, and give it to a chill ancient dragon.
Eeerrrrr, no, in no way does a death night even begin to approach the power of a Nazgohl (all of whom where powerful spell casters and all where unmatched in combat by any in their respective cultures during life becoming even more powerful in undeath. In fact a death Knight might, I say might, be as powerful as a Wight in the middle earth setting). In 5e terms maybe CR 22+ with 20th level spell casting abilities. In fact so powerful that it's hard to quantify them in 5e terms. Death Knights"borrowed" a lot of their traits (like most of D&D originally) from works such as TLOTR.
Ive seen other DnD sources placing most of middle-earth in 2nd tier levels. One dragon will fuck up a whole party if not a whole city. When your level 9 and everone else is 3 you seem like the scarriest most op thing in the game. Just because a source material was taken from somewhere doesnt mean the original source is automatically more powerful. That is not sound logic sir
My favorite class to play necro and death knight. Eso getting em in June 5 years later if they could just get pvp to work. Fk em for nerfing racial passives.
Lord Soth for the win. Originally Death Knights had a 90 percent MR against all spells. Thats why they kept Liches as pets and troops. The DK has been slowly been downgraded over time and DnD version.
Lord Soth's story reminds me of the Pharasees from the Bible. And the seductive lie of being able to call yourself a good person just by following the rules without God. All have broken God's law. We have all stolen, lied, coveted, hated, etc. In the book of James it says that if we have broken one part of the law we have broken all of it. We cannot be good and perfect on our own steem. We need a savior. We need Jesus who died on the cross and took the penalty of our sin onto Himself. To enter Heaven we need to ask God for foegivness, repent(turn from) our sins and trust in Jesus for our salvation. Once we do that God will give you a new heart and new desires. Please consider doing this today. For more information and a much better explanation of this head over to Livingwaters on UA-cam.
I do not need the good will of a hypocritical child of a deity to ‘enlighten’ my existence. Tell me....why should I obey the laws and commands of such a Deity, when he breaks his own rules more oft than not!!! Should he be above his own commands??? His own supposed laws??? Wrath, Greed, Envy....and others... why, I’d say he is just as flawed as the creatures he crafted!!!! I’d rather stick with the Lords I’ve already chosen to follow, thank you very much.
Death Knights are criminally underused considering Liches take centre stage in adventures so often.
Did anyone else imagine Darth Vader when they were describing Lord Soth?
Oh my fireballs. I NEVER thought I would be laughing at Lord Soth. Great show.

I actually MADE a death knight to play in an upcoming long campaign, and I need some help with a backstory, so now I'm here
Anakin to Dark Vader is a rough outline of how to hint at a Paladin turning evil, and becoming a DK in about 1 day xD
Can't wait for more videos about dragons! I love the videos you guys do on them!
Just picturing the banshees yelling.. "He raped her he murdered her he killed his children"
Game of thrones?
Death knights sounds the ultimate metal band
It also, in fact, is a metal band lmao.

Idea... Recover the death knights soul and force it into him. if it was being tortured he may regret it And repent.
