  • Watch this one first: • Timms BMW 840ci Accide...
    This video is Part 4 of the repair of a BMW 840ci 8-Series that suffered substantial damage in a road accident. Fighting insurance companies, and finding out that half the rear suspension parts are not made any more adds to the excitement along the way.
    This video has taken a while but we are back from the bodyshop now and the Rondell 58 Alloys are back from the refinishers. I used My Alloys in Basingstoke and C&S coachworks in Lindford

    Awesome to see the e31 back in action! Pity about the collateral damage, always happens in body shops…
    My 2c: Don’t DIY the headliner! Or, if you really are committed to it, double up on the nitrile gloves. I did it on my e38 (not the il) and it was one of the biggest PITA jobs I’ve ever done. Between the harsh chemicals (adhesive and solvents) and the fibreboard that the fabric is attached to, my hands got really messed up (blisters, burning and insane itching) for about two months, and all my fingernails got even more banged up, looking like they has craters on them for nearly six months.
    I know that a few forum people have done it without as much drama, but they also didn’t strip off the old adhesive and simply layered new adhesive and fabric on top of the old, with only mildly scraping off the perished foam (which is messy and nasty all on its own). So my recommendation would be to pay someone else to do it properly.
    It is going to be hard to get a matching piece of fabric too, as they are made to suit the most common cars, and definitely not rare BMWs. You may need to get hold of a specialist BMW upholsterer to get it done well, and you doubt there are more than a handful in all of Europe that have the skills and matching materials to make it look perfect.
    I don’t know anyone, but I also watch M539 Restorations, and I’m sure Sretten would have a few good ideas / leads on that.

      Sage advice I think - I've tried TrimMania, around £700 including the sunroof, they are the one recommended in this area - I might give them a go - but I might try the bodyshop first - not sure!

    Hi Tim, I'm so happy for you! My wife's Lexus was rear ended over the summer and luckily was repaired within a month. However, I've noticed that some things will never be the same. The trunk now moans when it closes but at least it closes. The gaps on the left side of the trunk are slightly different than the right side. And there's a scratch in the paint where they replaced the Lexus emblem. Overall, it looks good but just like you, I can see these defects. I understand how you felt when u saw the handprints in the paint. I'm happy that you got it sorted out. You have a very beautiful car. I can't wait to see the refurbished wheels on it. Enjoyed the video.

    So pleased it's back and mostly fixed. Just got back from a 2-hour round trip on country roads in my E38 (same engine), so comfortable, a pleasure to drive, and smooth over the disastrous roads of today. I never got to drive an 8 series, however, I could imagine it's similar but better than an E38 once everything is set up perfectly.

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Andrew! The 840ci Sport is a lot stiffer than the E38, even with SEDC, you are closer to the floor and it goes around corners a lot better. However, it missed out on the M62TUB44 with its extra torque and that was a shame. The 840 needs a lower-ratio diff to reach its potential, once that's in it is a much faster car

    Firstly, the colour of your car looks fantastic. As for the final workmanship of the job,,, I fond it a common occurrence these days with garages. Maybe I'm just a bit over fussy but there's a lot of garages out there that seem to miss the faults that us unprofessionals seem to spot quite easily . Either that or they just hope you won't notice it. Very annoying either way. Anyway,,, great you've got the car back and, again,,, the colour looks amazing,,, even if it's from a distance. 🙂👍👍👍

    Looks great, Tim. If you need the headliner doing I could recommend TrimMania. They’re in Wokingham, so I don’t think too far from you. They did the headliner in my ‘93 E36 coupe, and I was very pleased. Cloth matched the A and C pillars and their workmanship was great. Not cheap, but worth the money.

    Great to see the car back Tim. If I were you, I would get C + S to do the headlining, I have done 2 myself and they are not easy. The last one I ruined the material and had to buy some more. The hard bit is the lumps and bumps where the sunroof controls are. The electrical fault-finding will interest me, I have done lots of it already on mine. The worst fault was a mysterious fuse that kept blowing causing quite a lot of the systems not to work. Having had every module out of the car and working logically through it, the fault was that someone had taken the driver's door handle out at some point and trapped the small loom that feeds the microswitches in the handle behind the metal casting of the handle causing an intermittent short. Hmmmm. I wonder?

      @@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Unfortunately, I tend to live in the past quite a bit, and that sounds a bit pricey to me, but probably isn't in reality. I bought my material for both the jobs I did from Martrim, who I found to be excellent on every level. They have independent trimmers who work for them if you fancy getting a second quote.

Operation was ok from lever inside of car. Drove to local pub for Saturday lunch and on returning to car door opened as normal from outside. 3 days later same issue with drivers door so removed negative battery terminals and left it for about 2 hours and reconnected with no remedy still won't open from outside only from inside.
