Great video, very helpful! Applies to about any vehicle, too. I would add two things - 1, when you start the engine, turn the key on without actually starting, and make sure all the dashboard indicator lights come on, especially the check engine light, then start the engine and make sure the lights all go off. Second, buy a cheap code scanner off amazon that reads the vin and checks IM status. This is important these days. Plug that thing in and make sure the vin number in the computer matches the vin number on the chassis. Next, make sure the I/M readiness status is all ok.
    Here's why...
Sometimes a scammer will disable the check engine light to hide faults. The light should come on when you turn the key on, and go off after the engine starts.
Another recently common scam is an ecu swap to reduce the mileage. This actually goes along with the pedal wear check. The odometer is reading the mileage from the ecu, so if the vin in the ecu does not match the vin on the chassis (bottom of windshield on drivers side), the mileage on the odometer is not accurate. This may not be a deal breaker, but ask why and be sure you known what you're buying.
Finally, if there are fault codes (check engine light), this can be reset, and the light won't come on and the faults won't show on the scanner until the car is driven for a while. This can be spotted in the I/M readiness. If all categories say "ok" then you're good. If they don't, then the vehicle needs to be driven enough until they either do say OK, or give a fault code.

The LR3 V8 engines are generally very reliable. What’s the worrisome part on high-mileage LR3s are the Trannys since ZF recommended a fluid change at 75k mi and LR did it at 150K instead 😪

      Experienced this one myself personally.
Worked with LR specialist directly. The 05-06 are most prone for AT internal seals to wear, pressure is lost and gears ratio is thrown off causing faults. Specialty says they use 07 and up AT as replacements as they’re much more reliable. Great comment Jonathan 👍

Thanks for this thorough walk-through. I'm just dipping my toe into the idea of an LR1 or 3 and I was curious if you had recommendations on where to look? Are there sites that focus more on these types of vehicles vs. Ebay, FB Marketplace, Auto Trader, etc...?

    • @brandonpetrykowski165
      @brandonpetrykowski165  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks Michael!
Definitely go with 2007 Lr3 and up if you’re looking for the least amount of headaches. Older gens like Disco 1,2, and LR2 are beautiful but come with their own set of problems, primarily major engine issues (head gaskets). This is what gave older land rovers the bad rep. LR3 was really the turning of the tide to quality and reliability.
Used market is hard right now due to inflated demand but deals can still be found if DAILY checked. Any marketplace is good as long as you can inspect the truck in person. OfferUp, Autotempest, Cargurus and Craigslist are also good sources.
Let me know what other questions I can answer!

So do you now own two or did you sell the black one? I just bought an 06 LR3 from Scottsdale Ford Auto Nation a few weeks ago that they picked up on a trade in. It has some rust underneath since it came from the east coast but overall its decent. black on black just like yours. I had to do the rear driveshaft and the radiator straight away which ran me about $2k. Did you ever do the fixing worn paint video?

Hey Lynn! The 4.4L V8 is bulletproof mechanically if taken care of. Always inspect the AC system and cooling system at services. The one issue the 05 & 06 have is the transmission. They almost all develop faults and begin to slip and will need rebuild or replacement.

I have a opportunity to buy my recently passed father-n-law's '05 LR3 HSE w/105K. He was original owner, meticulously maintained. I currently own a '06 Lexus GX479 w/ 175K that I'd have to sell. Lexus is bullet proof. A bit concerned as reliability of the LR is in question. 50/50 regarding comments.
    Thoughts?

      Hey Steve!
Don’t sell the Lexus! That thing is worth 20k as it sits! The Rover is maybe only worth 8-10k. I love the Rovers much more but dollar for dollar the Lexus is worth more. Another thing is tranny issues until 07 with LR3s when you near 120k. I’d recommend them getting a full trans service asap. If you can get that LR on the cheap, resell would be AWESOME
