  • In this video, I show how to take a zig zag plate and make it a straight stich plate. This will help for machines like the Singer 237 which do not have a stitch plate but for which duplicates are easily acquired.

Boy o boy! This worked out great for me! I taped the whole plate except for the zig zag hole and used the toothpick for the center as best I could. Next time, I would suggest marking the clearance you need on the tape. I tested it in place and found I had to pick away on one side because it was just too close to the needle. I used my awl for this. I did the picking away the next day because it was just too soft yesterday. I love this! I'm amazed this hasn't flown to very popular views. I have been so frustrated so many machines come without the straight stitch plate. It's a major problem. I like that this isn't just a couple of pieces of tape fix. Thank you again. It's brilliant! ❤
I used clear packing tape to protect the plate from smears
small package of J-B Weld Original Cold Weld Steel Reinforced Epoxy,
Duck Brand 1.88 in. x 45 yd. Silver Aluminum Foil HVAC Repair Tape - not Duct tape with the threads embedded in it.
    toothpick,
one of those bread bag tabs to scrape the epoxy flat before it dries while the toothpick is still inserted in the center.
    Sandpaper if you need it.
fine tip marker to mark the center hole area to void
sharp awl to remove excess the next day or some time after the epoxy sets up.

Thank you for your positive feedback. I could not believe that it took me so long to figure out a solution. I was giving up on so many machines (even the 237) because it did not have the straight stitch plate. I felt really great too when it worked and then put my head in my hands at the machines that I had given away. But now that I know I am happier when I see a machine that I know does not come with one, but that I can make one easily. I like your suggetion too. Happy sewing.

@@jamesrogers991 BUT you are the one who thought of it! I hope with my comments, it gets your video circulated. This should be in the top five of sewing hacks! I am so happy and I am sewing! I am sure others would be happy to know they don’t have to be sewing without a straight stitch plate. Here’s to publicity. ;)
