UA-cam has been around for 13 years now, and so many creators have come and gone. But one of the earliest channels to find major success on UA-cam was Ian Hecox & Anthony Padilla's, "Smosh."
In today's episode of "A Brief History" we take a look at how Smosh went from a simple pre-UA-cam website to become one of UA-cam's most successful and long lasting channels!

Well since they have been here since the start, they would probably would see the bad and good youtube has gone through.
It's not even about being pc. It's just that the quality itself of most YT comedy and video content has gone down. Yes, there was alot of toxic stuff back in the early 200's on YT but there was still alot of quality content. I will admit many channels still upload quality content. It could just be my nostalgia of Smosh's Pokemon theme song talking.

I miss the old Smosh so much. Presumably 2009-2013 were the absolute best of them. I have so many good memories of watching their videos from this timespan, and they were pure gold. Pokemon in real life was my first video that I saw when I was younger (lots of nostalgia with that one) and I loved it. It was so original and honestly just really funny. Good times these were on UA-cam, good times

Although I don't like their content anymore, I have massive respect for these guys. Loved them as a kid and they were the only reason that I started watching videos on UA-cam in general. Mad respect.

Agreed. I basically just go to the Smosh Games channel every Tuesday afternoon for the Honest Game Trailer of the week now, but I have to give Ian and Anthony props for creating enjoyable stuff over time. And also for getting me onto UA-cam, because I think everyone in middle school then was watching basically Smosh, nigahiga, and some channels that probably don't exist anymore (and lots of one hit wonders).
Same, I stopped watching when they basically became a corporation but mad respect to Ian and Anthony, they made UA-cam more or less.

Oh absolutely. Nigahiga and Smosh are basically the channels I first subscribed to back in 2007-2008. And Ryan and his buddies still post fun stuff to this day.

It’s so rare that a channel can go through so many changes and still be liked. For example every new cast member on smosh all fit in well
I have to say, I'll always have love and respect for Smosh plus Ian and Anthony individually. They paved the way for UA-cam, the internet and millions of people. Hell yeah.

Mythical Entertainment finally acquired Smosh on February of 2019.
Whats cool is that Ian and Anthony went to my high school back in the day. Alot of their early videos were filmed in the neighborhood surrounding the school and on the various fields on the campus itself. Sadly i never got a chance to meet them since they graduated in June of 2005 and i was an incoming freshman in August of 2006. Thank you for making this video, i had honestly stopped watching their content many years ago and this was a huge nostalgia trip!
I cannot thank you enough for this succinct yet comprehensive recap. Their new videos have been suggested to me quite a bit lately.

This video may be outdated by now with the events of DEFY Media shutting down, Smosh getting acquired by Mythical Entertainment, and Anthony coming back to buy Smosh with Ian, but this is still a great recap video for what was current at the time.

I still hold massive respect for Smosh because of how long they've lasted and how successful they've been. No matter your opinion on them, you can't deny the impact that they've had over the years
I think it's really sad that smosh didnt really make that much progress in the last few years. They were blowing up until a few years ago, and since then they havent really moved. I just think that they deserve more than they have, considered the work they actually put in their videos...

Update: in 2018 defy shutdown and mythical took over Smosh ownership and in 2023 Anthony came back and the duo bought Smosh again

I remember being excited to see a new "if ____ were real" video sandwiched between Will it Blend and 240p gameplay footage in my subscription feed. Early UA-cam was a different, glorious place.
To Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, I’ve always been a huge fan since I first started watching UA-cam with my big sister. You guys are awesome and one of my biggest inspirations. I really wish you guys could work together again as an iconic duo. My favorite Smosh videos are Pokémon theme song and the entire Food Battle series. Thank you so much for your inspiring videos.

I loved smosh in the 2010-2013 era, jesus I couldn’t get enough of their songs. I loved them as a kid, Dixon cider, assassin’s creed songs, etc
Smosh is the only channel to this day that I have kept watching.I started watching 5-6 years ago when they made the video “flappy bird sucks!”I’ve been subscribed to it since and consistently watched it.I can say right now that I’ve watched all the every blank ever’s and over all around 80% of their content.They are actually the reason I got into watching UA-cam more.
I never knew that's why Anthony left, but I really respect that decision. I feel the same way about a lot of things in life, such as creative writing, or art courses. I have a passion for both but by taking courses to improve both skills I feel would only restrict me to what the curriculum requires and has discouraged me from pursuing said courses and only practice on my own free time.
I still want to see Anthony and Ian together again like have one guest star in the other's videos occasionally.

I miss being in third grade and coming home to school to rewatch the videos I've already seen while I wait for their weekly skit that they uploaded on fridays, they we're my idols at one point because they made me laugh so much which leaded to be generally being a happier person. I still seven years later go back sometime and watch their old videos again and I still laugh. I could write a lot of about how I used to watch all their channels but the point is that I miss the old days but I am grateful for how much they made me laugh.

Anthony's back, and a new era of Smosh has just begun. I think they'll do classic sketch comedy together again, but integrated with the other stuff Smosh does.

It kinda frustrates me how people hate on "the new" smosh- things change and it honestly wouldn't be that great if it was always the same. In all honesty, I don't watch their main channel much anymore but I really enjoy smosh games, and smosh pit. Its changed and I really did love the old sketches, but things aren't meant to stay the same. Mmmm I just love'm
It's always nice to see someone that actually accepts that things change lol. I've seen so many people commenting on different channels when even a small change is made, complaining that the channel isn't what it used to be. And yeah, Smosh Games is pretty good, especially with Damien.
