I got an old Powerbook 150 from a friend a few days back. Really cool to use a laptop that is older then me. Amazing how far we have come and yet how little has changed.

4:30 That "CGA Video Card" is actually an IBM TokenRing card, hence the 16/4 marked on it. Token ring cards normally used a DE9 connector like that with an external breakout cable to the massive token ring connector.
A tip for the Toshiba Tecra....i purchased a special Parallel port plug which is wired up in such a way that it erazes the Bios password on most old Toshiba Pentium II laptops... It worked a treat on my Sattelite 4000CDS!, I highly recommend seeing if you can buy one off of ebay!
Those HP laptops were very common in NSW primary schools around 2005-2008. They tended to use HP laptops and IBM/Lenovo desktops for years. Before that HP and Optima were very common.
Glad to see that these laptops will (hopefully!) find a new home - much better than being thrown away. It's amazing hat people nowadays will throw away, and even if Windows won't work on a laptop like this (due to the OS'es being unsupported), you could probably find a lightweight version of Linux that will run OK and make these devices fine for general usage. Of course, I'd focus mostly on the laptop with Windows 7, adding more RAM and an SSD - as that looks the most hopeful of the lot. Also - love the look of some of those really old retro machines - how times have changed! Hopefully they can be restored, as old machines like that are quite collectable!
I have that exact IBM ThinkPad R52 shown at the beginning but with the fingerprint reader. I love using it just because its almost as old as me. Plus, it's surprisingly still quite quick when running Windows XP.
It's so cool how that E-Waste recycler sends you laptops! Where I'm at, it's a real struggle to find vintage computer equipment but I do have a handful of cool retro laptops I like to work with.
1:10 Oh the R52. When I was 12 (2011) I got one from my dad and I used to play Minecraft on it on Win XP. That was a good laptop. I remember carrying almost everywhere and watching YT, drawing in paint and creating documents in Libre Office. I even managed to run my own MC server for my friends. Gosh memories. I still have it now with Lubuntu because XP was barely usable after a few years. I think I still have the old XP HDD somewhere.
Core 2 Duo equipped laptops can definitely be used for basic tasks today. The password can be removed by removing the BIOS battery for a long enough time.
The Amstrad is a fantastic machine and worth the time restoring. Putting a Gotek in to replace the 3” disk drive (which will need at minimum new belts) is probably the easiest mod for you look at given you probably don’t have disks etc.
I'm watching this on an old Sony Vaio laptop, just had the fan cleaned and thermal paste changed, running better than ever, I definitely think old tech should be given a second chance at life rather than be thrown out, before I got it this laptop was just sitting with a bunch of parts laptops ready to be thrown away, I'm glad to be giving it a second, even third life instead. I'm thinking of starting a project that would make a universal motherboard to bring life to dead or outdated laptops. I'm not sure however if that would be recycling or if it would just be generating more e-waste. Any thoughts on this? The motherboard would talk to laptop displays, keyboards and trackpads directly and have a pi compute module or some similar SBC. Things needed to convert a laptop would be 3d printed mounting brackets for I/O ports, which I've decided is best since you only print the ones you need locally for cheap, a few standard 18650 cells, the main PCB itself and a compute module. One thing that makes me not want to do this at all though is the horrible screens on many older laptops, but then again I go on ebay and see a lot of laptops that have an OK screen but slow-ish CPU with very little battery life.

Nice collection, I've dealt with similar laptops to most of these before. I had a Tecra 8000, have a Compaq nc6320 and dealt with a nx6110. Be careful about the Tecra 8000 though, those things are notoriously known for failing motherboards and mine had exactly that, plus a broken hinge and lid. and unfortunately it was deemed too broken to repair for me and had to give it out for parts... The nc6120/nx6120, nx6110 on the other hand can develop desoldered southbridge chip if you bend the chassis too much. Just like the ThinkPad T43 series, these chassis flex way too much in the front, plus first generation lead free products, give you these problems.
The t3200sx has a native VGA output on the back, but the bios is very picky about 2 model numbers of Connor hard disks. Could be a ide card with a serial controller on board, machine has 2 Isa slots
With Windows XP most of the time when it's password locked you can hit F8 at startup and go into safe mode go into the administrator and delete the password most people don't think to put a password on the administrator account in safe mode. So therefore you kind of don't have to install Windows in a way, as when you get into the operating system after removing the password you can open up command prompts and simply put in command codes that could completely reinstall Windows as a clean installment. Those functions were only access through command prompts but now they're more accessible in newer operating systems.
I have 2 thinkpads which is trashed and I picked it up for free, t43 and t60, the t43 is high-end and t60 is low-end but the t43 has broken screen and missing hdd while the t60 has faulty inverter and hdd included but then dead after

That ibook is in great shape.
7:28 It might have disk encryption or a locked bios?
i love think pads i used to have one and it lasted around 5 years befor the motherbored gave up
Congrats now you have content for the whole year
Excited to see the Acer and Sony Vaio get restored. 😇😇
I have 2 thinkpads which is trashed and I picked it up for free, t43 and t60, the t43 is high-end and t60 is low-end but the t43 has broken screen and missing hdd while the t60 has faulty inverter and hdd included but then dead after
These IBM Thinkpad's are the equivalent to Nokia phones. My dad worked at a IBM subsidiary and his Thinkpad's from the early 2000s still work without any issues.
I don't think that's a CGA video card in the old toshba, that FCC mention and the "16/4" is to me a sign that it is a token ring network card of some sort
Viaos are awesome. And I love that SSD sticker.
Yes!! Another recycling e-waste videos! Happy to look forward those comupters spring to good condition!
If you can do a max upgrade on the Toshiba it's gonna be so cool. With 4gb of ram and a ssd it is going to be amazing. I used an HP530 with an upgraded core 2 duo t7200 4gb ram and 256gb ssd on win 7 pro and it ran amazing for basic usage like web browsing, youtube(1080p was fine) and some older games ran amazing
Some great machines the amstrad cpc uses a belt for the disc drive and will most likely need replacing be careful as their is a metal pin that can fall out .
The Compaq at 8:06 looks like it has been used by HowToBasic. Actually the HP Compaq nx6120 was featured on a HowToBasic video!
Ive got a non SX T3200, its an interesting brick of a machine that has a 40MB hard drive and a 12mhz 286 along with an amber gas plasma display. I'm also surprised someone threw that acer out, the i5 may not be a power house but a 7th generation is still kind of modern.
that was really one good and real australian knife, Mike Dundee would be proud
Hey Nathan, I can't wait for new video in the future!
Please start the restoration series with that Sony Vayo😍🥰
