hi psivewri
first time I'm this early for a youtube vid!!!!
edit: can you cover more thinkpads on the channel? older ones are some of the best laptops to tinker with
No
@@Steven-yo2mj yes
Ayo no
Somebody is trying to scam me by sending a telegram adress with your channelname and wants to know my personal data. Claiming me to get an iPhone or MacBook as a gift.
It's not a "hoarding problem", it's a "collecting hobby", at least that's what I tell myself.
The difference between hoarding and collecting is presentation ;)
@@zachariah74 I put most of my laptops and peripherals in a laptop case. The only laptop I can't store is my Sony Vaio E Series laptop from the early 2010s. It's stored safely though.
Laptops aren't that bad, wait until you start hoarding servers 🙈
@@LawrenceMacMacster one step ahead of you. I have a 12u rack sitting on my desk (cuz I have no space)
Indeed; I don't hoard computers or electronics, I just collect them. :)
I had a newer model of this from 2008 running Vista x64 edition. It had some Nvidia GeForce GPU, 4GB of RAM, a core 2 duo t7500 or something, a 512GB 5400RPM HDD. And a "widescreen" touch display on a 360⁰ hinge. Worked great until I replaced it late 2020
Could it run GTA IV?
Oh wow that laptop must've been quite solid.
@@cydragon2.099 Yea, it could also run Halo 2
@@theforerunnerreclaimer nice... Well alot of PC games can now become otg thanks to handhelf gaming PCs
Damn, that thing could run 8.1 smoothly as well as run 10 decently for some tasks.
These early multimedia laptops had some incredible speakers. They don't even compare to even the finest modern laptops or the Macbook Pro!
This is because the thinner the speaker the worse it sounds, and since laptops are getting thinner and thinner, you may want some external speakers or a headset.
Laptops from this era are some of my all time favorites plus some are very easy to work on and upgrade plus they are generally better made so they can take a lot of abuse without breaking down.
@@saladfox To be honest the vast majority of modern laptops are crap with almost no options at all for upgrades and even worse repairability. Hell some of them are not even comfortable to use due to the poor thermals where it is easily 60c on the bottom panel while parts of the keyboard can reach 45-50c on some models under load.
holy shit that’s my first laptop! my parents had one from 2004-2011 and it worked really well until then, it had funny display issues where you had to hit the side of it to get it to stop pixelating what was on screen. i still have it however the charger is long gone and it got damaged further a few years ago when we were renovating
Wow, this is an insane throwback. This was the family computer that I used to play TF2 and Minecraft on at a freakishly low framerate up until we finally ditched it in 2011 or 2012. The single gigabyte of RAM that someone put in it may have gotten windows XP pretty far back then, but by 2010 just about every program would run out of RAM constantly and would either slow to a crawl or outright crash.
Nice repair on the hinges. I wasn’t so lucky with mine on the same laptop as the metal was sheered off and couldn’t be mended. I have a couple of these laptops or should I say chunktops. Pretty good machines for the era. Thanks for sharing!
Man, that laptop brought back so much memories to me. I was a repair technician around 2010, and I'd have people bring in that model of laptop a lot.
I had one of these at around that time; the hinge on mine was also broken lol.
I HAD THAT LAPTOP! OMG! I may have had the model right before this one as mine I got in 2002 but it looked identical and had that new gpu option. That thing SCREAMED back then. I used it till about 2005 when I got a desktop and sold mine.
The irony of me doing a motherboard fix on an HP laptop from this era only last week and then this being uploaded is incredible.
I think the mom of one of my childhood best friends had one of these, or a similar model, which she would let us play games on. Those speakers and the button layout definitely brought back some memories, so I know I've seen this or a similar laptop _somewhere_ before.
How did you place italics on a UA-cam comment?
@@BHNative Place underscores around the word(s).
@@HeadsetGuy nice, thanks!
@@HeadsetGuy _thanks_
@un canal random xde cant see on OnePlus Slate font
My family had one that looked almost identical. Amazing how heavy it was!
I had this machine back in the day and it was heavy AF! Mine had an AMD 64bit CPU.
But the same issue with the hinge happened around two years after buying it. Also, a small crack started to grow from the corner of the touchpad in the first few months.
Pro note: Ikea used to have the mockups of these machines in their “office furniture” showrooms! 😅
It's very hard NOT to like your videos. Excellent pacing and very informative about clever and practical work-arounds (those broken hinges - brilliant!). Thanks, I'm looking forward to more great videos from your channel.
One of my friends had this laptop, and she still talks about how she misses the speakers.
I has the 17" version of this laptop and it was amazing but so heavy to carry to school every day lol
Use Baking Soda and super glue instead of sugar, baking soda sets super glue quickly and gives it strength.
Not sure what glue you used, but I think a metal adhesive such as JB-Weld might have been much better, as that glue is tailored for metal repairs. People have used it to repair engines for decades here in the US. I have 2 HP laptops from a few years earlier (circa 2001) & are related to the zv5000, that being the ze5170 & the ze5501us. Both of them were given to me for free from a relative. I did some repairs to the 5501 & used it as my main general-use laptop for many years & it still works today.
TBH I prefer laptops rather chunky, because it offers better access to the parts, better heat dissipation and keyboards with more travel. These beasts back from these days were a lot fun to have.
Chunky ones often have more ports as well. My ultrabook doesn't even have a mic port as compared to my 17" 2008 Acer Aspire 7720 ICK70 with many ports.
Well, back then there was also more need for ports, but only the more expensive and business-orientated models had really more ports which are not really used anymore today. Like Firewire, but who uses a MinDV camcorder today...
@@UdoKrawallo You have a good point there, it's just that the mic port that I have a problem about how it's not very common anymore. I had to buy an adapter so I could use my headset with a built in mic.
@@avillagerplayingminecraft5833 That´s surely annoying. Good thing my Lenovo Ideapad convertible still has that. I guess USB-C with adapter works, as it is presumably the new standard connection for everything now, be it real USB devices or HDMI output.
@@UdoKrawallo I didn't know headsets came with USB type C other than phone earbuds. Since 3.5mm is still very common, it's good your Ideapad has it.
That was my first laptop since 2004. Mine was ZV-5120us model with Intel Celeron Processor on it, 40GB HDD and 256MB RAM.
I like the tone of your channel, no shouting and to the point 👌
My laptop had parallel ports and it came out in 2007. It was quite normal for a computer to have those back then. They were used primarily with secondary displays and older printers. Talk about upgradability.
i just done the same thing last night UK time on a Fujitsu Siemens ESPRIMO Mobile V5535.
I was able to upgrade it from 2GB to 3GB (max capable is actually 4GB of DDR2 per slot)
also a CPU upgrade from a lazy single core intel celeron to a Dual core intel core 2 duo.
this thing is like nearly 16 years old and I bought it sight unseen on eBay as a non functioning computer. I have done all of the necessary repairs and cleaned it up and damn it rips on Windows 10, Linux Mint and Windows Vista.
I am glad I done this because it couldn't even turn on from the start and I am using it right now!
7:40 "mmm. yummy speaker fluff" 💀💀
Very similar to my first laptop, and old handed down HP XP machine from a Gen older than this, ~2003. Loved that old thing with its fantastic huge screen and keyboard.
Unfortunately that era of HP laptop had a recurring problem where the power jack would go bad very quickly, meaning the poor old thing was tied to a chunky docking station. I’m moving and couldn’t keep all of my machines so it went to the thrift shop today for someone else to fix up and enjoy.
I've got that same laptop! The speakers on that thing always impressed me so much

Windows XP laptops are amongst my favourite laptops of all time. I am a huge fan of Windows XP itself and all its dazzling features that it has to offer. I really like the design and silvery lid of this HP laptop. I am glad that you have repaired this laptop. Have you kept or sold the laptop. I do like thick laptops because of their durability and strength.
My go-to modern browser for old XP is the Pale Moon-based version of Mypal. I was able to reskin the browser as a Firefox 3 (GUI and name), making it period-accurate-ish for my nostalgia VM.
The laptop from my childhood was almost identical to this laptop, so it's very cool that you're fixing this.

I love this era of laptop. If you get the right one, you can put in like 4GB of ram and load windows 7 with some fairly modern browser and have a completely usable laptop. Most processors at the time were well over 1ghz so with the upgraded ram, most of these laptops are usable. Maybe even with modern Linux!
using windows 7 in 2022 is a great way to get your bank account decimated
@@BrainiumBasher9001 I run a torrent seed box on my old Samsung Rv509 laptop from many years and it runs windows 7 embedded 2009 and I never got any viruses.
And also most viruses are only made for latest version of windows beacuse that's where most of the attack vector is.

I never have enough of these videos! Thanks Psivewri!
I remember when my father taught me about the laptop I first held in 2007, it was so nice to see an old thing like this still alive
Great man ❤ love old tech stuff ❤
I remember this exact model. Asked for it for Christmas when I was a kid. Probably for the best I didn't get it.
That hinge fix was pretty genius
I had one of these laptops when I started college. The battery life was terrible. Keyboard randomly stopped working. After 4 years of ownership. But it was definitely a nice laptop when I first got it. I was looking for something to replace my desktop. I never knew about replacing thermal paste bc that beast would get SUPER HOT. It actually burnt my leg after falling asleep with it on. This brings back so many memories. I think mine was $1800-$2000
Good job on the hinge repair
I had a HP DV5000 given to me in excellent condition, came with all the original docs, the receipt where it was purchased and even a laptop bag. Only thing wrong was the battery wasn't any good, and it didn't have the power supply. So I purchased a 25 dollar battery and used my universal power supply I already had. Sadly it's not usable for much anymore, as the thing works perfect... what a waste of hardware... Lol.
I have the same here in my collection. Nice display and speakers. Greetings
Yooooo its been years since ive seen this channel i loved this channel
Great repair job! Thank you for keeping this machine going :)
That’s chunky! Love the video :)
Nice informative video .... Nice work
The sound of starting Windows XP is a real ASMR

My first ever laptop!
The nerve including a note with the serious damage not listed in the ebay listing. lol
Back in days, brands really used to make great hardware even at low price points unlike today where you get subpar hardware even after paying premium.
This is back when HP had a great name. I had the DV 7 I think. Mine was slimmer, 17 inch screen and i still remember it being black with silver around the keyboard. I loved that thing.
I once made my own adjustable laptop screen "support" using an old collapsible/adjustable antenna from a TV set, a piece from an old erector set that has been with me from my childhood days, (a VERY LONG time ago,) a bolt and nut, some Velcro and a rubber stick on foot. It worked very well! Now if I could only remember where the hell I put it because this video makes me want to revisit my old laptop again.....🤔
PS: The laptop was made in 2004 like yours here too and bought by my wife way back then for $1500. It died out once but I managed to repair it and it still runs quite well!
Oh man I remember my dad had one of these back in the day. He always let me play Pinball on it. Good times. Enjoyed the video!
My first personal desktop PC was an HP Pavilion A420N, so this was awesome to see. Had never thought to look into their laptop range from that period.
The GeForce4 440 Go on this laptop is the same chip that's found on a Dell Latitude C840/Inspiron 8200, beast laptops from 2002! While that chip was the fastest mobile graphics in the world of business class laptops when C840 came out, it was then quickly followed by Mobility Radeon 9000 9600 and it was definitely starting to show its age

I have a compaq similar to this and I dreaded taking it apart to clean. However after a youtube video I successfully cleaned and thermal pasted the machine and it runs xp flawlessly and ur right it doesn't get hot per se just warm....artic mx5 does the job!
Harman/karden was the same audio card on my old windows 7(upgraded to 10) Toshiba satellite laptop
I have one of these with a broken power connector. This is my all time favorite laptop. Great speakers.
7:07 anybody saw that there was a 2021 sticker?
My laptop won't jiggle jiggle, it folds 🎶
When I was like 8-12 I would trash pick all electronics and bring them home and take them apart.I can count the amount of glass Ray tube tvs I took apart and had no clue they were capacitive and could’ve gotten shocked.I guess I got lucky
😂
Definitely. The CRT can explode as well
I have this same model with a broken hinge aswell and its still running its original installation of Windows XP and its the base model with a celeron and no wireless
Im not sure about it being a base model anymore since it has 512mb of ram. it has a 60 or 80gb hdd and no wifi. the thermal paste was rock solid and i damaged the CPU heatsink and heatspreadder when trying to seperate the two but in the end it still works fine. the celeron is very unnamed and the GPU is listed as an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP... it runs Lego island pretty well and its the only game i have tested on it so far. its dualbooted with Windows 7 and the original install of XP from 2008
Amazing stuff ❤️
Cool laptop. For awhile I was really into early 2000s Macs and Thinkpads.
Excellent video, love the lime green on the watch 🔥

I got a sister model of this, the HP Pavilion zx5000 with a mobile Pentium 4 @ 2.8GHz, mobile Radeon 9200 64MB, 1.5GB of RAM and a 150GB HDD. Still works great!
Sad HP drops complete support for some hardware after a while on their site, gets hard to find proper drivers and documentation for all the different kind of hardware some laptop ranges like this can come with.

Finally, I’ve been waiting on another video.
HP used the same case on several variants of this laptop. The really good ones were the HP ZX5000. I do believe I also have one of, if not, the higheset end ones. 3GHZ P4, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, BlueTooth (yes, that was an option on these.) and a Mobility Radeon 9600 with 128MBs of dedicated video memory. Not sure how big the original hard drive was because it was missing when I got it. Also got another ZX5000 that has similar specs but it doesn't have BlueTooth and it has a Mobility Radeon 9200 with 64MBs of dedicated video memory. They really are impressively well made. The hinge fastening design is very impressive, with screws not only fastening them to the case in the front, but also in the back as well. These and the Compaq R3000 are notorious for loosening power jacks though. Both these and the R3000 were avaliable with an Intel CPU and an ATI Graphics chip or with an AMD CPU and an Nvidia graphics chip. And yes the ZV/ZX5000 and the R3000 are basically the same laptop just with different cases. I higly reccomend using a browser called Mypal for browsing the web on an XP machine. I can watch UA-cam almost at 480p full screen without it lagging on my ZX5000 with the Radeon 9600. I do have the recovery software for my Intel/ATI ZX5000 and I also have the recovery software for my AMD/Nvidia R3000. I'll be opening an Internet Archive account soon and will definitely upload them there. :)
Do you still use the default Windows XP O/S or did you install another one in its place?
@@rulvra3072 No, it's going to stay with XP. Installing newer versions of Windows on older laptops like this one can be a bit of a fidly process.
@@1980sGamer Cool! I have a (now) 10 year old HP Pavilion that I recently installed a SSD + 4GB of RAM in - I installed Windows 10 on it and its rather snappy with that SSD in place!
@@rulvra3072 Oh, I believe it. It's crazy how much faster even some of the most low end SSDs are compared to mechanical hard drives.
@@1980sGamer No doubt about it, rust spinners get left in the dust by even the lower end SSDs. My laptop's i7 3612qm is thanking the SSD for it too - even managed to get a few game titles running at 60fps without stutter! That old 3rd gen chip is such a trooper ngl
These things ARE beasts. The height of HP.
I've got a old Dell gaming laptop that has a mini subwoofer! Yeh!
If you want to use Internet on Windows XP now a days in the most stable way, Sea Monkey is an option. It's a pretty optimised Browser for Windows XP and I even ran UA-cam on 512MB RAM with a Pentium D.
I have had two of these machines in my time. They report to Windows as an Athlon XP, however it is really a Athlon 64 with the 64Bitness disabled. As far as I know this is one of the few units to ship with the short lived mobile nForce 3 chipset. The nForce 3 did not have integrated graphics available and needed a external AGP GPU to power its display, hence the Geforce video chipset.
I got a neat super expensive old Dell Precision laptop from the XP Era, like Vista XP era. Core 2 Extreme, I think I got it to hold 8GB of ram, dedicated Quadra card, chassis built like a tank, and the best part, I paid 25¢ for it.

I had this as my first work laptop, i remember it being awesome, did not remember it being so bulky and heavy!
Also, I don't have eucalyptus oil handy at the moment, so I'm wondering if vicks vaporub is okay to use.
I have the "newer" model: the ZD8000. Up to 135W Pentium 4 CPU, 4GB RAM, dual booted Windows XP and Windows 10 (Back when WIn10 was good). 6 years ago I bought a new battery for it and used it as a daily driver for school. I was amazed by the amount of flexibility this computer had, and was astonished by the amount of cooling power it managed. I remember it being able to pull air through the keyboard despite having three giant holes for ventilation on the bottom. The battery life... 2 hours at max.
