I hate when people call TMNT a shitty game. It's an absolute classic NES game and deserves way more respect than it gets.

Because he is truly nervous that he will fail the boss-fight and have to start the game over. No Quick-save. No retry.

Dark Soul series still allow you to continue. So it is only more punishing inbetween save-points. Imagine you had to start over after 3 lives.
Watching this made me so nervous. Those sewer jumps ruined my life as a kid. I still have no beaten this game, and it was one of the very few NES games that I actually owned as a kid.

It's not just the jumps alone, the enemies respawning as well. I know it can be done, but it is difficult. Mike is pretty good at this game, and even he is having trouble and getting frustrated at one point.

Yeah, if you retreat, they respawn when you go forwards again, it's the same in Ninja Gaiden another very hard ninja game. It's tough.

+JoannaRice Yeah that's true. But having loads of scrolls does indeed make the game a lot easier. I know I leaned on them heavily the one time I beat it.
+Jamie Rose I hear if you enter the Konami Code, Scrolls becomes a playable character.
+Jamie Rose Fun glitch in this game: you can have any projectile weapon do the same damage as the scrolls as long as one turtle posesses them. What you have to do is have your turtle throw his projectile, then switch to the turtle that has the scrolls while said projectile is still in the air. When is hits, the game thinks you threw a scoll, and will give it that damage. The scrolls must be "on" too. Basically, the game assigns the damage to whatever weapon is "equipped", not what is on the screen.
got this for Christmas , so many years ago , don't have it anymore , going to buy a retro machine and this game again. thank you for playing this Mike and allowing me to relive my childhood. You Rock.
I've completed the game with a Game Genie and the Technodrome was still hard as hell, so conglaturation for beating it!
As a kid I thought the Dam level was genuinely unbeatable. I thought the game makers just didnt want anyone to finish the game lol.
I thought I was a God when I beat the dam level in the early 90s. Never got past the turtle van level though.

This is one of my all time favorite games, yet being as I had it when I was 6 it was impossible to beat!!!!! Feels good to see the end after over 20 years even if it wasn't me who beat it! Great job man!

Yeah, the game is pretty good. It gets tough though, I had to use a Game Genie to beat it. I still have the movie on VHS too.

The gameplay is pretty deep for a nes game. Subtel differences between turtles, additional weapons, character switching? Quite impressing.
My favorite turtle to use is Leonardo. Donatello has reach, but it is slow and linear. Leo's sword has an arch to it that i find more useful than a straight line.

+Tom Caine Your response isnt showing up here but Ill try to explain. Every other "accomplishment" you listed anyone would put ahead of beating a game. One helps animals, one would help someone overcome their fear of heights/falling. Beating a game is an accomplishment but it should not be at the top of your list of lifelong accomplishments unless you are very young.

One of the weirdest things about this game when I was a kid was; how can they swim for the dam stage, yet get swept away in the sewer where they live?
Dams are pools of clear water. Sewers are rivers of shit.

You can get your turtles back after they die. I lost Raph early in the game once, and he was located in one of the buildings in the next stage, tied up.
You can just walk over it.
This was one of the games of my childhood. I never played the vehicle stage as a kid, yes I was that frustrated. But I was playing TMNT anyway and for me it was awesome. Thanks Mike for this longplay, it reminds me good old times.

I'd have never thought of that as a 5-10yo kid at the time.
You don't have to farm, but it makes it a lot easier.

Great play through Mike, the sense of accomplishment when you complete this game is amazing, even after all these years I still remember being so happy to finish it
All that grinding for scrolls when you didn't even use very many. Plus you should actually use them during parts with lots of enemies instead of just saving them all for the technodrome.

It's actually a good idea to collect the Kiwi (Scrolls) on everyone except Don. That way you can use him as usual, and not worry about the enemy drops!

You really made it, back at 1999 when I played it for the first time, this game was impossible, not anymore (and with this video of your stream you made me see it easier, the game is hard but after watching the video I was able to beat the game with some little troubles). Great Job as always. :)

I'd love to see a full Bayou Billy run. I actually had it as a kid and like TMNT it was hard as hell.
Look up Until We Win - Bayou Billy. It's a solid walkthrough, despite being on emulator I believe. Or just play the JPN version, Mad City, and you'll find a better game all around.
Jim26D Exactly it's a respectable challenge and it's one of those few games that was side scrolling and had zapper parts...and then miserable driving.
Thebigredsnake I remember getting to a second god awful driving section, fighting the blues brothers, at least it looked like them. Used to have a blast thinking back.
I never beat this game when I was a kid. As an adult I beat it a few times by getting 80 scrolls for Mike & Raph. I used Leo & Don most of the game. Two tips: Exit and re-enter rooms to collect pizzas multiple times. Also in the thin yellow hallway near the end, inching forward and ducking as soon as you see the floating soldier which makes him back away.
I forgot how awesome this sountrack was. Thanks for beating this game. Been haunting me since childhood since I always died at the Technodrome.
This was a really fun and tense live stream. I'm real glad I got to see it live. It was as exciting as watching a high level gaming tournament event, especially when he overcame the impossible stuff, or narrowly dodged bullshit, or got fucked over real bad.
btw I was the guy posting "You got the touch!" "You got the power!" after he beat the spikes; glad he caught the reference but he should as it turns out that's one of his favorite movies, ha!
I would LOVE to see an NES "Gunsmoke" play through. That game was great.
this game has haunted me for over 20 years i had this on my nes as 5 year old , i never got past the swimming level , so thanks moke i am going to see what happens after that level cheers
How to make the game easier
1: Your jump height is controlled by how long you hold the jump button and if you are doing a forward jump, if you touch the ceiling, it takes away your momentum and you will drop straight down like a rock.
2: It's tedious as all fuck, but go into the warehouse after the dam level that has the scroll, collect and reenter the building until you have maxed out scrolls for all the turtles.
3: Go into the dam level with full health for all the turtles and use the tag team concept. When a turtle runs critical on health, quickly switch out. I prefer to let Raph and Mike do most of the swimming because they suck in the fights anyway.
Even with that in mind this game is brutal without a save function. This is one of those games where if you make it to the end and lose all your power ups, you might as well hit the reset button because it would easier to try for a clean sweep instead of trying to get through the Technodrome with no secondary weapons. The turtles primary weapons suck ass once you get to the underground area with the bugs and whatever the hell they are as they take a million hits and will kill you in 2 or 3 shots.
Ninjas and Turtles, a combination no kid can refuse.
I never knew about scrolls till this video. Never beat that game but beated all other Ninja Turtles games!

Fill up Mike and Don with scrolls. Don't use Mike till the final stage, only use Don for long range attacks. U won't accidentily lose any scrolls by collecting other items.

stage 5, climbing the ladder. you can actually stand on the top of them. you can actually walk across them as long as you climb to the top. you can attack since you are standing on it.

It's August 10, 2019. Watched this whole video after Cinemassacre released the TMNT movie review. Mikey, glad you beat it. I was never able to pass the turtle van part. Didn't know I needed missiles.
It took me 4 years to beat this game, from 1987-1991. It's almost disappointing to know how hard it is to get to Shredder, and to beat him all you have to do is pound him with scrolls.
Anyway, I'm glad Mike played this game. AVGN always underrated this game.
so maybe when i played this i was slightly better than you (not trying to be a braggart or impose some kind of machismo or something) but i did the whole thing with leo and don and then you have mike swim the dam and raph farm the scrolls. you don't need full scrolls with everyone. I think i got lucky with the rng for the technodrome (every time) but i have beat this game the last 3 times i played (it is super hard i am not denying that) there are 3 or 4 jumps that make this game very hard. I remember as a youngster i game genied this game all the time and there is like a lava pit that would make my game freeze when i was invincible (late level 3) and never beat this game till my early 20s. Love this game! Mike i like your vids. I like that you play all the way through and remain humble. Keep playing games!!!
The jump at 22:12, thanks for doing that. I remember being able to do it when I was a kid, but when I watched the AVGN video for this game he didn't try it and I thought I imagined it. Also, I understand he is not really trying to do well at the game for comic effect and whatnot. Anyway, thanks for confirming my theory that that jump can be made.

+kovyiscool I have beaten this game without grinding even a fraction of the time Mike did. Mike seems fucking OBSESSED with scrolls, which are not needed to beat the game, as I have done it. Granted, I lost some turtles and had to continue once, but I still beat it. Most of the stuff Mike did was not necessary.

I just beat this game today, it is so good, I never got past the dam level as a kid and I really struggled today but I made it!!!! I was as nervous as Mike was at the end hahaha
Definitely neat to see how far Mike came from here and all he learned.
The problem with so many of the viewers is that they go off the (mostly) satirical AVGN videos rather than playing the game objectively and forming their own opinions. Often times, they're particularly young as well, so they haven't ever played it either. This game is one of the harder NES titles, but it's also a good game, damn good in fact. It just has some quirks that honestly weren't atypical of games during the NES era.

JoannaRice Did Contra have a big ol' inventory of weapons? I don't hear anyone complaining about it with that game. I stand by what I said. The game is by no means perfect, but it gets dumped on far too much, often by people who have never played it. You can't rate a game by 2016 standards when it was made in 1989.
On my channel I have a video of me beating it legit in much less time than mike with no scrolls. You just need to use the screen to spawn or remove enemies for that part at the end with the space men

+dezm101 ikr i just beat it after a bout 50 tries . with hardly any scrolls. you just need about 20 each towards the end . and try a duck under those laser bastards, and them stupid robot kangaroos. and you can get scrolls technodrome.
I have really bad memories of this game, because as a kid I was so excited about the game but was very disappointed that I could barely play it. Anyhow, very cool to see it being played through. I should try it again :P

This was a great playthrough! Seeing that it was 2.5 hours, I didn't think I'd watch the whole thing through, but it kept me captivated all the way through. Seeing the amount of life left before going in to Shredder made me think it wasn't going to happen, but he pulled it off. Bravo!
I remember playing this game on PC back in the day...I loved it! i was like 5 or 4 years maybe, and believe it or not, this was the game that started my love for "open world" games.
To think that I only beat the dam ONCE in my childhood... well, at least I know I wouldn't have lasted much longer than that.

Michael Bay had the Turtle Van on the ending of his movie as a last chance for him to convice people they were watching a TMNT movie. He failed miserably.

i know this was posted years ago, but you can get those scrolls in level 5 by climbing the 4th ladder from the right all the way to the top. when you get all the way to the top rung and youre standing on it, you can attack again, and with either don or raph just keep swinging upwards, and you can kill the scorpion crawly things. then shimmy over to the right
