  • In this video I head off to the woods on my bicycle for a solo overnighter, sleeping under my tarp in my Buffalo 4S sleeping bag to the sounds of the woodland by night. I also review the Buffalo sleeping bag system. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

    I love the bike trailer. Compact and does the job of hauling your gear really well. You are so clever in all the methods of camping you do. Safe travels and God bless 🙏🏼⛺️😎

    A nice night out Simon! I like the bike trailer. I have from when the kids were little, but yours look more friendly for a quick night out.
    The shot looking up the swaying tree was good!
    Thanks

      +Knucker - Hi Al, cheers! I quite liked that shot too - I was having an arty moment!haha! That trailer has done some miles I can tell you - I too used to use it a lot when the kids were little for camping trips. 🏕 cheers mate and ATB, Simon.

    Hello Simon
    Its the fellow food critic here, just watched your video.
    i think its possible your a genius, the problem with youtube, is you get all manner of morons posting comments.
    "thats not survival" "thats not prepping" "thats not bushcraft". but you in your wisdom have claimed to be none of them.
    you are indeed, a bloke in the woods. no one can argue with you. like your style mate.
    iv'e done a fair bit of cycle trekking myself, mainly along the canal network, and mostly when i was in my 30s.
    i'm fast approaching 50 now, so iv'e scaled down my trips. i do still find a bike is the best way to wild camp, i have to pick my locations carefully, i e no stiles or them or those annoying kissing gates as they're sometimes called.
    now im gonna attempt to be geographically clever, Cambridgeshire? somewhere in the east judging by the flat terrain.
    Good vid mate, might just watch another one tonight.
    Gary.

      Cheers Gary! Glad you enjoyed it, yes, like you love exploring by bike - just haven’t done much for a bit - you carry more for less effort, and cover a considerable distance if you need or want to. Yes, top marks - in In Norfolk! We’ve got a great route near here that extends from close to where this video was filmed to the North Norfolk Coast, it’s called the Peddars Way, and a great 2 day, mostly off road ride with plenty of stealthy camp spots along the way 😉. I agree with you about the comments some people receive - cringe-inducing stuff usually and totally unnecessary. It’s easy to say that you like from the safety of your keyboard, I doubt they’d make the same comments face to face!! Thanks for watching, still chuckling about the spit roasted Christmas pudding! Atb, Simon.

    • @garyhertswildcamper8958
      @garyhertswildcamper8958 6 років тому +1

      Iv'e heard of the Peddars way but never been, so many places in the u k. so little time to see em all.
      i'm sure Abbie Barnes is planning a trip there soon though.
      i'm planning what i refer to as a 'hycle' trip to the wolds way next summer, inspired largely by one of Abbies youtube vids.
      i'll explain, a hycle is a camping trip by bike, where you end up walking as much as you ride, do to rough or hilly terrain. also the fact that i will have my trusty hound with me, so i wont expect him to do more than 15-20 miles a day.
      i was part way through your camping with tom vid, when i was politely interrupted by your pop up comment.
      so i'll get back to it. and most and most likely post a comment after.
      keep up the good work.
      Gary

      I like the sound of hycling! Especially when the hills get steeper! I walked the peddars way last winter with my dog - she’s a Newfoundland and the 15+ miles I was expecting if her were just too much! She’s a large dog and my wife had to come out and rescue her! (She didn’t rescue me though! Lol!) cheers buddy.

    Ahoy Simon. Nice overnighter! But this kind of sleeping bag i have never seen before ... nice concept with the layers and things like these arm holes. Greetings from Germany. Azze

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +5

      +Buschpirat - Thanks Azze, I had a lovely night - sleeping to the sounds of the forest - owls, the wind blowing through the leaves, a distant Fox - very relaxing! Buffalo have been around since the 1970s, but has never really taken off outside the UK, where people either love it or hate it (a bit like Marmite - another English oddity! Haha!)
      It is a good system, very versatile, just a shame it’s so heavy and bulky - and expensive!! I got mine second hand!! Atb my friend, Simon.

      Simon, that's a good piece of kit that sleep system.....German army used to be issued with a similar sleep system, which was the envy compared to the old 58 pattern NATO bags.....downside was, what you eluded to, the bag was hefty. I believe they further brought out a Parka style sleeping bag that could be worn then dropped down into a foot box. Surprised Azze has not come across them.

      The Last Grownup in the Woods - Thank you - glad you enjoyed the video! Me too, I’ve seen some ridiculous scars - it’s either lack of knowledge or shear stupidity, I suspect the latter in some cases!! I once came across a spot in the most gorgeous bit of mature deciduous woodland where someone had had an inferno of a fire up against an oak tree - I doubt the tree survived!! That and all the cans and general rubbish left behind - it was really upsetting!!
      The sleeping bag is great! It’s warm and toasty, indestructible and it stays warm even if it gets sopping wet! Just a shame about the bulk, weight and price tag!! I bought mine second hand!!
      Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub! 👍 Atb, Simon.

It is good gear - indestructible, warm, well designed (the design hasn’t changed for nearly 40 years - that tells you all you need to know!) it’s just the bulk, weight and price tag that let it down! Great to see you out enjoying the beautiful Norfolk wilderness as always, looks like you had a great overnighter, buffalo systems equipment definitely takes some beating, have a buffalo mountain shirt and wear it all winter with nothing more than a base layer , keep up the amazing work👍

      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому

      +the bigyin - Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! It was a lovely night - I love the woods at this time of year - crisp air, stunning colours - beautiful! Yeah, I love buffalo gear - I had a special 6 shirt, which I wore to death, and now have a Montane extreme smock - it’s the same principle with dp and pertex, but a more cut fit, and reinforced, articulated arms - I just find it fits me better - and just as warm! Can’t beat pile and pertex for winter warmth! Cheers, Simon.

    Very nice Simon, a beautiful overnighter. Haven’t seen a Buffalo sleeping bag for over three decades! I fully remember when in the late 70s Buffalo clothing and accessories were the in thing. I did many outdoor courses where at least three people would be Buffalo enthusiasts. Good to see you bringing it back into fashion. Surprised that as you were using a bike trailer and therefore had excess room you didn’t pack more elaborate foods. Yes you can keep your cardboard dehydrated stuff, give me decent real food any day of bushcrafting week. Cheers Simon and always remember to wear a cycling helmet. ⛺️🏕

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +1

      +LiveSimplyFilms Mountain Mike - Cheers Mike! I’m a huge fan of Buffalo, have been since the mid 1980s when a friend of mine had one of the mountain shirts. I recently replaced my Buffalo special 6 shirt for a Montane version - basically the same, but fits better and a few more features - the Buffalo shirts, jackets, sleeping bags etc haven’t changed at all since the original ones were introduced!!
      Haha! Dehydrated meals are much lighter to carry though and being homemade, is just like eating home-cooked food (almost!)
      You are absolutely right about the helmet - I should wear one - it’s bad habit I’m afraid!
      Glad you enjoyed the video mate! Atb, Simon.

    A wonderful watch and listen Simon from start to finish. I really like your bike and trailer combo. I am looking at different bike options myself to enable me to ditch the car more, use it on the road and get out wild camping. A hybrid is looking favourite at the moment. I must look in to trailers also. The buffalo sleep system looks great but a little bulky unless transported by trailer of course. I like the idea of wearing a part of the system around camp as you demonstrated so much food for thought. The ride to the wood with the sun beginning to go down really set the scene. Thank you for sharing. I thought that I had subscribed to your channel but upon checking saw that I wasn't so I have remedied that. Paul :)

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +1

      +Paul Outdoors - Thanks Paul, and thanks for the sub!! Glad you enjoyed it! It was a lovely night out, nice quiet but of woodland - just what was needed! The trailer really opens things up to carrying your gear - although with rack and panniers you can carry a lot too! The trailer is a Kool Stop Wilderbeast - it’s basically a copy of the Bob Yak trailer, but less expensive - it’s a robust thing - it’s done a lot of miles and been on many an adventure both on and off road!
      I’m a big fan of buffalo, I’ve used their clothing for years, and the outer bag can be used in conjunction with their pile and pertex shirts to save weight, but I’m happy to put up with the bulk and weight for a comfortable nights sleep, no matter what the weather is doing! I’ve tried a few systems and sleeping bags, and for me, for bushcraft camping, it’s spot on! Thanks for stopping by! Atb, Simon.

    Hi Simon, enjoy your vids. I'm in Canada. I'm not up on my British terms. You call yourself a 'bloke' (Maybe a bit of a self-effacing term) correct me if it's not under a 'chap' but above a 'sod' xD It would be nice to hear a min or 2 of silence after your in the bag, maybe just you reading and the sounds of nature. Turn out the light. Morning fades in...

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +1

      Cheers Doug - a bloke is really just a generic term for a guy, used more in conversational language - eg ‘some bloke walked into a pub’ etc.
      I like the idea of a longer transition from the night to the morning, but on this trip, I didn’t have an external microphone and the built-in one just didn’t pick up enough natural sound. I‘ll play around with a longer fade and some night sounds next time - cheers, from a bloke in England to a bloke in Canada!

      +Big Ted Adventures - Cheers! Glad you enjoyed the video and glad you came across the channel! The trailer is great, I used to take the kids off on camping adventures with it when they were tiny - it’s done some miles I can tell you! Its a Kool Stop Wilderbeast, a tough bit of kit and much cheaper than the Yak Bob! Atb, Simon.

    Nice location... definitely my kind of surroundings ( ...non midgee season 😂) Good review of your sleep system too, it certainly looks the job. The bike with the trailer is a brilliant idea too...even more so if you took your car for most of the way. Things could turn out to be pretty luxurious with the use of the trailer...😁
    And you want to pack some of that Chilli for breakfast.....😁

    Another great video with top tips, I especially like the way you break everything down and find all the information well presented, there is also a great likability and warm friendly appeal from yourself in all your videos.
    I'm torn between the two systems myself and tend to switch from season to season as well but at the end of the day it's all about getting out as much as you can and enjoying it.

    Another great video Simon, I am interested In your dehydrated meal that you made......... I have been toying with the idea of getting a dehydrator for a while, but the ones that I have seen are predominantly for dehydrating fruit!
    What one do you use?
    Might be an idea for another video?
    Thanks Craig

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому

      +Craig Mountford - Cheers Craig! My dehydrator is just a bog standard one for fruit etc - the temperature is variable so it’s good for just about anything. I had to get some tray liners, otherwise your food will drip/fall through the gaps in the tray (you can use greaseproof paper rather than the liners). If I’m making a big batch of chilli or spaghetti bolonese, I just make sure to rinse the meat etc after browning to remove as much fat as possible- fat will make it go rancid! Then I just portion up the surplus, spread a portion out per tray and give it a good 14 hours at full temperature. Make a note of the portion size before dehydrating so you know how much water to add when rehydrating. Simples, but really tasty home cooked food that weighs bugger all! Hope this helps - once you’ve got one, you’ll be dehydrating everything!! Check out ‘Hungry Hammock Hanger’ here on UA-cam - lots of tasty recipe ideas!! 😉

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +1

      +Chris Millington - Cheers Chris! The firebox is just big enough to use for some warmth, but only just! I had to tuck in close to get the benefit. It’s no substitute for a proper open fire, but definitely safer in that environment! Plus you use a fraction of the fuel! 👍 glad you enjoyed it. Atb, Simon.

      Hi, there are small convention valves available, but it depends which type of cylinder you are converting from. There are also refill valves available that enable you to refill an empty bottle from a full bottle - particularly useful when filling from one of those cheap 75p cylinders! Search on eBay for gas conversion valves. Hope you find something that’ll work! Atb, Simon
