Bushcraft breakfast - steak and bannock. Canoe/tarp shelter. Ferro rods and bushcraft bellows!

- In this video Maggie and I canoe to one of our favourite spots to make some breakfast - bushcraft style. Who doesn't want steak and bannock for breakfast? I also set up a canoe shelter with my tarp and do a review/comparison between different fire steels.
Caramelised! 🤣🤣🤣
Best cooking term ever invented!
When I was a kid in western Washington State, dad would drop me off on one of any number of lakes in the summer. Fish all day and my canoe, as you have it, would be my shelter. My catch my dinner.
What amazes me is how parents did that with their kids back then, only having a general idea of where they were. Way different times, the 70's and 80's.
Did you forget your Hot Chocolate? If you are ever in the west of Ireland and up for a camp give me a shout. Your videos are inspiring. Thank you. Adrian.
Thank you , Simon .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
I absolutely love your videos! Keep up your awesome work! 🥰😊
Wow, that is a fantastic canoe, you did a mighty fine job there. Congrats
Im so glad i found your channel.
All do Respect Simon your a million times better than Joe Robinet your so much better so Natural and definitely down to earth person
Very useful ideas. Thx
Just cannot say enough about how much I enjoy your channel Simon. That canoe is a thing of beauty. Well done.
Amazing channel. Canoeing, cooking, camping, biking, hiking, challenges, gear reviews, ration reviews, info re trails/camps/forests
etc... Awesome channel.
Beautiful dog!
I always enjoy your videos. Thanks Simon!!
Love the music score . Thanks for the video .
I love the chair!
Well Simon I’m afraid I have to make a negative comment. Unfortunately since I’ve discovered your channel my book writing has stopped. Being retired I spend two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon at Costa drinking coffee and working on my next book which is a follow up to ‘It Gets My Goat’. Your films have disrupted my work somewhat as I now tune in to your channel and travel with you and Maggie as apposed to working on the book. So please could you in future not make such interesting and entertaining films, yes that would certainly help me. Cheers 😉😉😉😉⛺️
+LiveSimplyFilms Mountain Mike - Hahaha! Sorry Mike! Glad you’re enjoying them enough to be a distraction though!! 😉 I think I might have to purchase a copy of your books if you have any stock? I’ll send you a pm later. Atb mate, Simon.
Great looking chair 👍
At the end of this video you say how chuffed you are to have 100 subscribers. Now it's 118K! And richly deserved 😊
This is excellent Simon! Great to see your first comparison mate. You have so many great ones! Going through all your old videos and really enjoying it!
My Native heritage is impressed with your Bannock recipe..lol.. Try it with Butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar..
I like how Maggie jogged over and sat down, as if to pose for a photo. Cute.
Hahaha - Yes, she’s a natural! Cheers, Simon
bannock one my favorites. so easy to make
Friends of ours have two rescue Newfoundlands that you have to stand well clear of when they drool and shake their heads. Your outings as ever are great to watch and just suck me into the moment
Thanks Mike! Luckily for us Maggie has never been a big drooler! 💦💦💦😂
I see you bring the whole dead bush to your camp , have all sizes of wood . That's the way I was tought as a small child , what I couldn't break , burn into , keep pushing it in , and burn the ends . Very few of bushcraft people do that. Glad to see your processing it at camp
Awesome chair.
I have just found you on UA-cam and I’m loving your videos so much .. Townsville Australia.
well made video Simon....enjoyed it
Thank you!
Nice to see Maggie, the star of the show, demonstrating the "dog paddle." LOL Thanks for the comparison of the fire steels. I enjoy your shows of "alternate" camp setups and gear. Give Maggie a hug once she dries out.
recently subscribed and working my way through from oldest to newest, great stuff
Awesome video!
I am amazed at Maggie's will power. We had a black Newf for 14 years and at the faintest whiff of water, he would be off....Usually chasing bloody swans.... She is lovely and reminds me so much of our 'Bear'.
Oh, Maggie loves a swan! Not sure what she’d actually do if she caught one!! 😂
Simon, a bloke in the woods I hope the current isolation is not too hard on you both. Stay safe and well.
One hundred subscribers when this video was made. Now here you are at more than 185K, and well deserved. This is such a lovely wholesome channel.
RIP beautiful Maggie. 💔
OAR-some video mate like always, thanks for sharing your great knowledge
Really nifty setup.
This guy is awesome he knows his gear and knows bushcraft I love watching him big inspiration. P.S love the canoe you made beautiful craftsmanship.
love your chair
Thank you! it’s important to have somewhere comfy to sit in camp!
Been a while so I watched this one again. I like watching the ones with Maggie in them.
Lovely canoe, great dog, enjoyable video. Clever bushcraft but I just hope it doesn't encourage a bunch of yahoos to start cutting trees down to build camp furniture!
Seeing Maggie so young and excited. :)
Awesome start of the day. Its always good when your dog can go. Nice video. Thanks for sharing and you and your dog should just make a day of it and relax. Have a good one Simon. Will be waiting for the next one
Hi Simon found your site researching canoeing on the Dart which I am going to do next week. Thank you for all the tips and entertainment
A really interesting watch. Simon has a very engaging manner about him.
David Kitchen - Thanks Dave!! I should have been a teacher 🤓 lol!!
Simon, I only recently found your Channel, but I think it's great. You're so down to earth, and keep things simple, just what Bushcraft should be.
+Keith Orbell - Thank you Keith, glad you enjoyed the video and glad you found my channel! Stay tuned, there will be plenty more to come! Atb, Simon.
You took the little doggie! I like the little doggie and I'm glad you shared your breakfast with her before throwing her in the river.
Interesting information on the ferro rods and thanks to your information I know exactly the one I'm going for, which involves wading out to that island armed with a metal detector. As you say, buy cheap or buy once, but even better is if someone else does the buying.
Another quality video, mate, and if your subs don't go mental then my name's Clarissa (which, for some strange reason, I kinda wish it was).
John Finnis - Thanks Clarissa, glad to have been a service, if you can find that damned ferro rod John, it's yours!! I'm a strictly 'leave no trace' bloke and the number of sleepless nights I've had knowing I've left that thing there, I cannae count! Cheers matey!
Oi tellee what, chap - we'll have a stay on the island (rope that Lee git in as well) and find that rod, thus salving your conscience and generating a feeling of goodwill all round. Hurrah!
John Finnis -Now that sounds like a plan in the making old chap!!
Thanks Simon , Just meandering thru your old VIDS . Enjoyable so far. Don't now weather to binge watch them all. Are save them like a miser, treating myself on occasions. Thankfully i still rewatch and learn from the newer stuff ive seen 2 or 3 times. Thanks again.
Great chair. Reminds me of my dad's main sail seat...the cloth.... every now and then when someone else took the helm he'd sit on the boom not far from the mast sail up in his Canadian made keeled sailboat.comfortable for the back ...his retirement boat. He raced snipes originally..after he made his first sail boat....they have some beautiful wooden ones still today.. Patterns too I think if i recall correctly.. thanks for the tips on the fire flint rods..I use matches and or lighter usually. Great gift idea. I may convert .. the bannock bread is new to me will study. I still envy all your swans..
Great memories of your Dad and his sailing boat! Can’t beat a wooden boat! 😁🛶
woods thanks for all your responses.. I find your wood tools wonderful! Sustainable too. I thought since you were so good at creating..I'd give you a bit of a thought ...snipe patterns or better yet create your own class of boat.. Thanks..
Awesome mate , who doesn't like steak for breakfast? 👍
chris bamman -Can't beat it! Cheers, Simon.
Damn beautiful canoe
Thanks James! 👍🛶
Very nice... I have the exact same one...
Nice! I think it is perfect for canoes- really light, strong and flexible enough, but also easy to repair if you put a hole in it! (I speak from experience!) did you make yours? Atb, Simon.
No but I did have to fix it up, it's like new now with an electric motor setup attached to it and yeah very light and fast I love it... It was a gift from God, while working one day, I prayed to God for a boat to go fishing with. About an hour later I was at one of my customers homes and he had it in his backyard just wasting away. I offered to buy it from him but he said no and just gave it to me... While praying, I promised God a first ride on it and that I'd take him fishing with me if he answered my prayer. We have been out together many times since then, I always invite him when I go... How's that for a story... An answered prayer.. :-)
I've been binge watching your videos for a few hours now. Really love this one ❤
Simon, you are my new favourite bushcraft UA-camr.
Thank you!! 😁
That's a great dog.
+LoaferXcursions - thanks, yeah, she's great, a bit daft but puts up with me!!! Especially if there's something to eat at the end of it!! Cheers, Simon.
@@simonablokeinthewoods Haha, mine would never behave as well as Maggie. The black lab is hyper and my little dog, a rescue, is VERY bird orientated and vanishes. Maggie is great. I thought she was a Newfoundland cross, because she's smaller, until I saw the video about her X
MMMM bannock , my favorite. Thanks for the awesome video
Hi Simon. New to your pages and really enjoying it. Luke
What a piece of work that canoe is almost as beautiful as your best friend Maggie I believe.
Thank you Max!
its good to see a canadian canoe used this way they do provide a fair bit of windproof shelter!!
I always like seeing Maggie, dogs make everything so much better. Nice post mate, all the best.
Cheers! She’s a good girl and doesn’t complain much - especially if there’s steak on offer! 🐕
Thanks for this, along with all your other videos I've watched so far.
Great stuff!
Great channel. Love the cooking and the dog. Cheers!
Thanks Jerry! Glad you like the videos! The dog and the cooking sort of go hand in hand - I cook, she eats!! Cheers and Atb, Simon.
Great show. Informative, entertaining, heart warming and lovely country.
Great video Simon like your shelter and chair the dog well its like my dog loves camping ATB Geoff
Lancashire Lad -Thanks Geoff! Maggie loves it, and I can relax a bit on the island cos she's less likely to run off and cause havok!! She stinks of river and woodsmoke now though - bath time me thinks!! Cheers, Simon.
I love these video's, Really great to watch.
Really enjoyed your video
+Canoeman094 - Thank you kindly! Glad you enjoyed it, it was fun to make this one!! Atb, Simon.
Peaceful way to pass a morning. Love Mags, she's a good buddy! 😉
Thanks David! She’s good company! 😁
Mate this is so beautiful. I’m in oz and you just tore my heart apart thinking of my time with my cockers in the canoe. I think you may have lost Maggie by now. Im sorry.
I’m a ‘bushy’ and I miss my boys still. Your an inspiration in so many ways. Keep the beautiful content flowing.
More water in the Wensum than there is in the Bure, the upper reaches of it anyway. Even less in the Glaven! And there are no islands on either that, that I know of so yours adds the thought in the back of your mind about being marooned. Interesting video as always. Comparisons are good and grilled steaks even better!
Cheers John! It’s been a bad year for all our rivers - the Stour in Suffolk was completely dry around Nayland! 😳🛶
++@@simonablokeinthewoods++ I wonder if all our rivers now run lower than they did thirty or forty years ago. In the 1950's I learned to swim in the Glaven where in some places, where it ran across an unimproved watermeadow it was six feet or more deep. Ten years ago the water was less than knee deep in those same spots and the water itself felt dead. Further upstream attempts were made in the 1980's to put some of the natural meanders back along a stretch which had previously been straightened. Volume and quality have not improved however and so far as I am aware the Glaven remains devoid of life along it's entire length.
Great channel. I just found it now I'll binge on your videos. I love making bannock on my trips. Right now I can only dream. We are having an ice and snow storm . Beautiful canoe. Greetings from Ontario Canada
Thanks Clifford! Glad you came across the channel. The nice thing about bannock is there are a thousand different ways to make and adapt it. I hope the snow storm subsides soon! Atb, Simon.
My new go-to saying, "It'll be caramelized!"
Thanks for sharing this video, very. Nice and interesting video.
Can't believe I've watched this video 4 years ago. The time passed so fast.
doing a rewatch myself.....still enjoyable second or third time around
Simon, greetings from Florida....since subscribing, I have been trying to review ALL your past videos..they are wonderful.....each evening, .my lazy and overweight (perhaps he id just large boned) English bulldog and I truly enjoy watching you and Maggie. I would certainly love to put the 65 pound bulldog in a canoe similar to yours , but I fear he would sink faster than a large rock!!Thank you for your efforts and great work!
That’s a unit of a bulldog!
Simon I'm from Canada . Your doing a great job , very entertaining. Thank You
I just thought I'd like to have a little go. That's how I've gotten sucked into this hobby. :) I appreciate you folks that make content and share it with us so that we may indulge. Cheers from the US. Love your channel.
Thanks Shane. 👍
Hello Simon and Meggie!
Hi Maria! 😁
Very nice meal!lovely Terranova doggy.cheers!
Thank you! Maggie is a great dog, very calm and loving, but it took a long time to wash her after she went in the river! Atb, Simon.
Simon I am amazed at your creativity every time I see one of your videos I notice you do something different! Thank you! Unfortunately my knees prevent me from doing a lot of camping, etc. But there is a will there is a way, just have to have an elevated fire! You are an inspiration Simon and I thank you again for the love of "natural" as I see it! 😄🙏
Thanks Ann! You can buy raised fire pit platforms -designed for Dutch oven cooking -they’re a bit bulky and probably heavy, but if you’re camping from a vehicle, it’d work well. 👍🔥
Brilliant video Simon, really good watch. That canoe is beautiful aswell...and Maggie. Thanks for sharing. Take care, friend.
AMBushcraft - Thanks mate! Really glad you enjoyed it, it was another nice one to make -and not just because steak was involved!! Lol! Cheers, Simon.
Enjoyed this Simon. I think your channel will grow rapidly. You have the "Charisma" Well done.
Sandy
Wiltshire Man - Hahaha - thanks Sandy! Actually, I’ve been completely amazed at the number of people who are interested enough to have subscribed! Appreciate the kind words! Atb, Simon.
Hi Sandy, Yes Simon has a good personality, and so do you mate. I have enjoyed watching every one of your video's that I have seen, I have not seen them all yet, however, I will indeed do that soon. I even enjoyed watching your camping and morse code video, probably because I already have an interest in radio. Sandy as long as you keep making video's, I will keep watching. Thank you brother bushcrafter.
You don't do so bad yourself Buddy x
Aww Thanks Dawn
I'm watching this at 06.41 GMT, and you now have 33.7K subscribers, and I'm one of them! My how you've grown!!
Nice chair
Really comfy and Uber- lightweight! Got to have a comfy seat in camp.
Happily subscribed
Thank you! 😁👍
So darn cool this trip from start to finish Simon, great camp, Maggie looks fab also...a great watch.. : )
Thank you Mark! Glad you enjoyed it - it is one of my favourite spots, quiet and secluded! And the canoe tarp setup works well - lots of room! Cheers and Atb, Simon.
nice traditional setup really nice!!
Cheers - I like this setup, it’s simple and really effective! And there’s something about the canoe providing a solid back wall - homely!
nice dog and a beautiful canoe.
Heaven.
Cheers!! It was the steak that did it for me!
Hi Andy, I received your very kind message, but for some reason I seem to have problems with UA-cam messages! I have replied but not sure if my reply was sent. This is a problem I’ve always had with UA-cam - when ever I reply to a private message, it crashes! Let me know if it hasn’t come through and I’ll try emailing! Cheers, Simon.
Simon, a bloke in the woods
Hello, no, nothing arrived, but that’s not a problem, it was just an observation :)
1967AJB - there is definitely an issue with UA-cam messages then! Are you on Facebook or messenger? I have a Facebook page - Simon, a bloke in the woods, if you drop me a quick message on there I can reply or email?
awesome stuff loved the canoe tent. your dog is rlly a nice pup to not be running off chasing every bird and squirrel in the area like my dogs would do.
Cheers Joe! Oh, she usually is!! She’s a bugger, especially for swans or pheasants! She’d never catch one, but she’ll run for miles trying, then I’ve usually got to run off to find her!! Atb, Simon.
Superb video as usual Simon, or should i call you SIbrows, next target 100.000 subscribers, with the quality of your work it will not be long coming , regards from Scotland
Nice one Simon. Great camara presents you have, always look forward to watching. Jonesy
Thanks Jonesy! 😁
Nice varied video Simon, good job mate.
Paul Embling - Thanks Paul - glad you enjoyed it buddy. Atb, Simon.
Such great video's Simon and informative content. And ya got Maggie !
You just taught me how to make a bushcraft chair in no time with no waffling on like the rest of the UA-camrs 👍🏼 pleasure to watch your vids, I’ll be back for more vids.
Cheers Chris, glad you enjoyed it! 👍
Awesome Simon ...... thank you
+kris4362 - Cheers Chris, glad you enjoyed it! Atb, Simon.
Yet another quality outing matey
well done on getting into the 100 club

Barry
Essexplodder -Thanks Barry! I enjoyed this one quite a lot!! Cheers, Simon.
Nice little film fella. I spend most of my bushcraft time with my dog Billy. Good times eh 🖒🔥🌲
Cheers Rick, a mans best friend - especially when there’s a chance of steak! Atb, Simon.
Hi Simon, came across you a few weeks ago and now binge watching all your videos - had a chuckle at the 100 subscribers comment at the end (now 66.8k and counting - one more here👍🏻). Thanks for all the great content you’ve posted - very inspiring.
Thanks David!
Hi Simon, thanks for taking us along ,the meal looked tasty, regarding the loss of your ferro rod, I've been there ,done that, mine now have a piece of day glow orange cloth atached that I can spot easily, a piece cut from a safety vest works well, including a bit of the reflective strip, so you can find it whith a torch . Ps ,the throwaway blades from an electric planer make good ferro scrapers. Stay safe mate, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart.uk.
Simon, I liked the Ferro rod demonstration. Once can see the value in getting the correct Ferro rod. I have a large one that I use and hand out as gifts. My handle is duct tape (which can be used to prolong a flame) that holds a line for the strikers. The duct tape also helps in finding it if I drop it. Your cooking is also very fun to watch as you continue to use your small kits to make a meal that not only looks good but tastes great. Cheers, Skillet
Thank you! Great idea with the duct tape handle! 👍🔥
Good video! Greetings from sunny Ft Lauderdale Florida.
Great content, Simon.
just discovered you so used my usual tester of watching an old video first, great stuff mate. I'm a big fan of the Canadian's (Robinet et al) but it's great to find a good UK show. Also really good to see someone who has 100K subs being chuffed with their first 100! subscribed and ready to trawl through your back catalogue. nice one.
Looking at your video's made before I subscribed. GOOD STUFF!! Love the video's with your son, Tom. Thank you from Newfoundland!
Thank you Lori! And thanks for the sub! Atb, Simon
