Before social media, everyone was making their own webpages for business, hobby, reasons, and they connected with like-minded people by searching the web and creating links. Search was nice because you found interesting things by people like yourself and it helped connect with retail items. Now it is all about retail or monetary incentive. We need a non-monetary avenue for people who want to just socialize outside the scope of centralized networking. Because now, regular people are confined by their own dependency to having a social outlet that is provided for them. And so their scope becomes commercialized, and fighting your way out of this self-imposed dependency becomes a pastime, and rebelling against it a common point among which we agree... Because what else you going to talk about?
Thanks Chris! My degoogling efforts so far with my Nexus 5X and various computers. Keep -> Simplenote Gmail -> Tutanota Google Docs -> ? Google Drive -> Syncthing (partly replaced) Calendar -> Etar & Fruux Chrome -> Firefox Messenger (SMS) -> Signal Contacts = ? Google Play Music -> Jamendo Video -> VLC UA-cam / ? Google Assistant -> MyCroft AI (attempting to use) Duo -> Wire Files -> Amaze Google search -> Duckduckgo
i still agree with most points in the video, i might add, that a look at the constellation under NASDAQ is always very helpful to the why and how of open source and internet policy. because lets face it: google, like facebook have SERIOUSLY WORSENED especially with the start of the Trump-Precampaigns 3 years ago and worsened with the Anti-Trump backlashes. functionalities have been tightened, users put into clusters and separated, interconnectivity between google services reduced. All of this has to do with Nasdaq corporates and their political games
Hi, Chris. A number of things: 1) There are a few android based custom firmware that are more open source/libre: Replicant (removes as much proprietary as possible), LineageOS (the vanilla/standard android replacement. Slimmer, since it has less bloatware, and the basis for some other replacements), CopperheadOS (has the goal to be more secure than the vanilla android). You can have a look at more here (note that not all substitutes are free or aim to be): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_custom_Android_distributions 2) Perhaps you can take another look at the brave browser. For quite a while now has three options for ads: allow all, replace with non-tracking "brave ads", and block all. The payment is an opt-in, although it only works on non-private browsing mode. It still has an opt-in for blocking scripts, some fingerprinting methods, block fishing/malware (not a substitute for careful behavior or antivirus), and https everywhere. All the settings can be configured globally, with adjustments per-site basis. Personally, I think ublock+umatrix does a better job at element blocking. It's also more fine-grained.
This is the stuff I use: Browser > Opera Search > DuckDuckGo OS > LineageOS (Android) Email > ProtonMail Maps > OSM (PC) / HERE WeGo (Android) Notes > Simplenote Translate > Apertium Docs > Zoho Cloud > Resilio Sync
Hi Chris, I also recently tried to remove Google from my life. It is very difficult considering we are UA-camrs. Also when Android is you primary phone it is very inconvenient unless you root your phone and go custom rom etc. In the end I have minimized the use of Google services but alas it is everywhere and hard to escape. Great topic Chris. Cheers!
I've been using DuckDuckGo even before I started de-Googling. The bang commands are soooo convenient. Startpage is also a good alt if you can't find something on DuckDuckGo. Use !sp
Thanks Chris! Great video! I too am trying to De-Google my life! I have subscribed to Posteo email and like it very much. I agree that the font size is too small on their email web site, but I have set up Evolution mail as my email client and it works well! I was just wondering which Android email app you use with Posteo on your mobile? Regards, Graham.
For a Google Drive alternative, you should check out Mega.nz Huge amount of storage for free. Only downside I found is that it's somewhat slow to download your files from the cloud.
I've been using Mega for 5 mths for data (business stuff, not vids, pics, and games) It syncs in everything : phone, win10, and linux. And is very reliable. I am very happy with it. Google doesn't synch in Linux.
you can turn off smooth scrolling in preferences. or use vsync through compton or some other solution. It will completely eliminate screen tearing on your entire system.
I'm planning to switch to another email provider but I'm a bit torn between Posteo and Protonmail. Protonmail's paid service costs quite a bit more but on the other hand it allows custom domains which is pretty nice as well.
Protonmail : for email. Which is in another country and is encrypted. Mega : for cloud type storage (They give you 50gb of space and encrypted) Mega.nz and has an app for your android.
Interesting thoughts on moving away from Googling. I've being playing around with NextCloud installed on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS via Snap. Although I can't say that I dislike Google, but I'm always on the look-out for something open-source and a bit different. My only concern is, how long will the alternatives be available, i.e. gmail vs posteo? I truly hope that companies like Posteo do well as they certainly do provide an alternative to Google and the likes.
Given the utility of youtube.com, as opposed to the app, it would be great to know how to approach that site so as to preserve one's privacy. Choice of browser, search, VPN, Proton Mail, etc. Just subscribed. If you haven't done a vid on this already, plz consider. Oh, for us americano's, what is 7zed?
Hi Chris i recently started using brave browser which is super fast like i have never seen and it is dead easy to set up and import al my bookmarks and it totally private big time .how ever i did try bitchute but the buffering on it was driving me mad and i could not watch videos so i a m back on youtube , at first i when i heard about google and privacy i did think well so what ,if they are sending me some adverts that they know i might be interested in ,but after digging i realize that its more than that ,then i thought that well no why should any one save any data about me i downloaded brave browser and its so fast no adverts and i really am happy with it so far ,try it guys see what you think ,let me know
The problem with Google is that their products are often the best and they are free. When choosing an alternative, it's not like going from Windows to Linux, where you know you will have a better OS. No, when you are using alternatives to Google, you will most often use a less good product. And you may even have to pay for it. So, yeah, I once tried that. I was not using anything Google anymore. But I got to realize that I prefer to use what's best. And I'm not RMS... ;-)
I find better search results using other search engines. Google is not really a search engine as more than 70% of the content is human managed content which I think makes it a directory.
The problem with trying to de-anything is all the smaller companies get taken over or are obsolete. I am watching from youtube using the Brave browser and that means you will not get paid I did not watch any adds. I'm not going to join any patrion never planned on it. I used to do the same thing where I run Windows but none of the stuff I use all the time is some software I go buy after and put on my computer made by Microsoft, so no MS Office, I used Open Office when it was new. I have been using F-Droid for a long time now. I still use Drive as the thing is its free and I do not use it much but to move stuff off the phone I do not need right now.
Did you try protonmail? I switched to theirservice six months ago and haven't looked back since. Also if posteo's servers are in germany that should be a concern.
+themroc I looked at your link. The first sentence "German firms aren't allowed to say anything if they have to hand data over." is a shitty argument because the exactly same thing applies to US companies as well. Only looking at the nationality of a service is pretty dumb anyways, Germany has shitty email services(gmx etc.) and good ones(posteo) just like every other country, including the US. What matters is the implementation, if it's good enough it's secure no matter what country they're in.
Absolutely. I wouldn't have an email hosted in the US either. It is not a shitty argument if there are countries where judicial investigations happen out in the open, without gag orders. And there are such countries, so?.
Hey fantastic video, first time watching. You have great presentation, good speaker. I've been trying to de-google myself as well, but there is no escaping certain services like UA-cam, and Gmail for work purposes. Ive removed Chrome from my desktop and mobile, and installed Brave and use DuckDuckGo for search engine. I have as well deleted the Facebook and associated Messenger apps as they are partnered with Google. Keep up the good work and I look forward to learning about more efforts to circumvent Googles monolithic hold on our data.
I removed Google+ today. It's useless. Just like I removed Twitter and Facebook. I still use Google account and Google devices like Chromebook laptop and Android phone. It starts with tiny little space. I use Gmail, Drive, Blogger etc. BUT. I am not sending/storing anything too personal or sentive. Most of the time you can store photos, videos, music, files on your computer - without a need for internet storage service. I heard that many are happy with Protonmail.
You said ... I understand that there is an open source Linux program that will run Android apps. Can you confirm, tell us all how to get it on the desktop (Kubuntu, for me,) the name and all the rest? Probably a long vid.
Hey Chris! Great video, that mail service sounds great ill check it out. thanks. As someone who has been on a similar journey i have some tips for you (please ignore me if I'm telling you think you already know) Drop box has some issues where they literally look in your remote folder, if you want to put a song in there to listen to some place else you can actually get a copywright strike from them! the only way they can do that is if there is more than a little indexing going on! Personally, for cloud storage i use SpiderOak, they literally tick all the boxes for me. i use the unlimited abbount ($140 a year when its on offer but so secure that it feel its worth every penny) DDG: if you want to extend a DDG search and dont want google to know about it then use !sp at the end. Because Google is sabotaging other browsers on their sites, especially Firefox on UA-cam, and FF isn't suing them, then there's no point using Firefox anymore if you use UA-cam - which i do. UA-cam's subscriptions page is just too valuable to me. Coupled with Sync and Google Keep and the Google search engine, with Chrome installed there is no better or faster experience than using Google Chrome, so we might as well get over it and have an easy life. So what Google tailor makes adverts and tries to sell you viagara ... no? OK, just me then ... but anyway -- we can't beat them .... so join them -- what real harm are they doing? The CIA spying on us isn't neccesarily a bad thing in real terms. Get real - Get Chrome and Get out of this paranoid mindset which is ruining your internet experience.
I decided to degoogle after all the censorship of anyone who isn't a socialist SJW became super prominent. I use Bing for the rewards ($5 Amazon gift cards), and Apple/Microsoft for email/contacts/calendar synchronization. It is unfortunate that there isn't a UA-cam competitor at this time. I'd switch as soon as the creators I watch switch. UA-cam and junk email sign ups are the only things I use my google account for now.
that light switch looks like this face -> . _ .
The switch is not impressed with its lot in life. Or Chris. Or both!

I miss the pre-social media days.
I use duck duck go as search engine and I am very happy with it
Matteo Renoldi I use it a lot more nowadays.
It's crap. Google is the best - get over it.
It's better to setup a searx server service in your pc to gather all of the search engines to one site with much more functionality
Duck Duck Go is awesome if you want organic results, google if you want curated results.
Thanks Chris!
My degoogling efforts so far with my Nexus 5X and various computers.
Keep -> Simplenote

Google Play Music -> Jamendo

youtube -> newpipe or webtube
twitter -> twidere
google reader -> flym
contacts -> I use the AOSP contacts app
Good suggestions. I can't afford the Purism phone at the moment but I really hope the crowdfunding is successful!
Got any suggestions for a Google News alternative?
amazon does not want your data?
most definitely DOES want your data
i mean wtf is Alexa to you
SUPPORT THE LIBREPHONE

Linux Quest
Install Gentoo on your phone!
The only Google-thing on my Android phone is Play Store. Everything else is disabled. Even UA-cam is disabled.
LineageOS for microG is my recommendation, check it out if your phone supports it.
Rooting your phone doesn't get rid of google not at all.
xuser48 Yet here you are still on youtube. :P
If I cant find something in duckduckgo I've been trying searx.me its a bit slower but it also searches more sites and is open source.
duck all the searches!

the only problem with Posteo is that you can't pay for a month to see if you like it. you have to pay for a year upfront
ultravio1et I use protonmail :) been working very good for me

Oh, love DDG and use their browser with it!
For a search engine, I've started using startpage. It uses the Google search engine, but inserts itself in-between. Google sees it, not you.
Given the utility of youtube.com, as opposed to the app, it would be great to know how to approach that site so as to preserve one's privacy. Choice of browser, search, VPN, Proton Mail, etc. Just subscribed. If you haven't done a vid on this already, plz consider.

Amazon will eventually treat you like google and Facebook . So eventually people will have to leave it.
In DDG, you can use the `!sp` to be redirected to StartPage.
The problem with Google is that their products are often the best and they are free. When choosing an alternative, it's not like going from Windows to Linux, where you know you will have a better OS. Wait until Firefox 57 drops.
Don't wait, download the beta now. Stable.
+Jebidar Falcon LOL REALLY STABLE? I USED 57 RTM. IT WAS SHIT. Worse than Gulag Chrome.
Google Is Fucking SJW Scum did Firefox fired former CEO because in his private life he was PRO LIfe? Btw ...he then founded BRAVE Browser
Netrunner has been really impressive recently
I find better search results using other search engines. Google is not really a search engine as more than 70% of the content is human managed content which I think makes it a directory.
email = proton mail
browser = opera
search - duck duck go
no, browser = brave or palemoon
Brave is very bad software. Check it out.
Why?
Replacing ads with ads. Just like Ghostery - baaaaad behavior.
Opera=free ad blocker (works well on youtube) and VPN.
The problem with trying to de-anything is all the smaller companies get taken over or are obsolete. I am watching from youtube using the Brave browser and that means you will not get paid I did not watch any adds. I'm not going to join any patrion never planned on it. Chris, Solus is my daily driver -- would love for you to give it a try! Great Distro!
Use Startpage as your search engine.
Vidme is worth looking at and Waterfox as a browser.
Ever thought about trying Zoho Mail and Zoho Docs? Great Gmail/Google Drive and Docs alternative.
Did you try protonmail? I switched to theirservice six months ago and haven't looked back since. Also if posteo's servers are in germany that should be a concern.
Why would a german server be a concern?
arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/10/europe-wont-save-you-why-e-mail-is-probably-safer-in-the-us/

Protonmail is the way to go. 100%
Even if you can't switch from UA-cam entirely, you could still join the many Linux UA-camrs who have an account on Vid.me as well.
The Solamnic vid.me is gone now :( im using vimeo as my ad free backup for now
Hey fantastic video, first time watching. You have great presentation, good speaker. Dropbox monitors every file you upload to their servers.
Zimbra is free html email service including calendar etc. regrading video what about the obvious "Vimeo"
real.video, d.tube, bitchute, dailymotion, etc
You said ... I understand that there is an open source Linux program that will run Android apps. Can you confirm, tell us all how to get it on the desktop (Kubuntu, for me,) the name and all the rest? Probably a long vid.
It is hard to live without google as a native finnish speaker and I would guess thats the same with every other small language
Good info.
when you you bay for the product that's mean you aren't product !! thats doesn't mean that they use your data like microsoft .
You're from Wales? Can you speak Welsh?
PC is pretty easy. Android? Hmmmm
Just buy your own domain and set up your own mailserver. Stop using free email services of any kind because they are not free in any way.
Hey Chris!
Great video, that mail service sounds great ill check it out. thanks.
As someone who has been on a similar journey i have some tips for you (please ignore me if I'm telling you think you already know)
Drop box has some issues where they literally look in your remote folder, if you want to put a song in there to listen to some place else you can actually get a copywright strike from them! the only way they can do that is if there is more than a little indexing going on!
Personally, for cloud storage i use SpiderOak, they literally tick all the boxes for me. i use the unlimited abbount ($140 a year when its on offer but so secure that it feel its worth every penny)
DDG: if you want to extend a DDG search and dont want google to know about it then use !sp at the end. (uses start page, google results, no data farmed) also for those on Arch based distros you can use !aur for an AUR search too! neat!
:)
Chris Were Digital excellent. Full featured qt applications and offer support for Linux users.
Don’t forget to change your DNS to
80.80.80.80
80.80.81.81
The hardest one is google maps. There is simply no alternative that compares.
What about Google drive? The best service
Shit. Mega is best and always was (Megaupload was the best) but it was sold to some Chinese fuck... But Megaupload 2 is coming! And Kim you better not fucking sell this too!

"If something is free it always comes with a catch..."
Where did people get this idea from??
Sounds a lot like the milk ads from the 2000's
Search engine: Duckduckgo
Google Docs: Dropbox
Gmail/Gsuite/Google calendar: Mailfence
no mention of diaspora/minds/gab :o
Isn't the Brave browser based on Chromium?
It is, but Brave is problematic. Use Chromium instead.
You worry that someone will monetize by you talking about FOSS? If they do, they deserve it because they are genius.
OS: Mint and Manjaro
Cloud: Mega.nz (dumped google drive because it doesn't sync in Linux, Mega works really well on all platforms)
email: still on gmail
search: haven't found anything to match google
OS backup: Terabyte Unlimited : BootIt UEFI (fastest partition copier and imager, and most reliable)
Phone : Samsung Android
Firefox
Libre : 95% on this now, 5% on MS Office. (I hate MS as much as Google)
Though I want to get google out of my life purely because of their extreme lack of ethics. They are the biggets tax evader on the planet, but parrot on about having the greatest social conscience. They also are a driving force behind bringing socialism in the USA. and spreading fake news, censoring conservative views..... DON'T BE EVIL GOOGLE
1:51 Isn't there vid.me?
Polarful Good joke.
Not anymore.
UA-cam is also google.....
The worst is us gov owns google
They all use your data, that's how the service works, unfortunately. Otherwise you would never be able to find anything.
I can find an alternative for really anything Google has. Alternative to UA-cam? Vid.me
Long gone.
why
But you do youtube, shouldn't in be theory, google know everything about you?
You don't sound very welsh?
Why ignore Yandex.com as search engine ?
Discord does not your data
bugman
Discord has discord nitro.
Try vid.me or lbry
Ranukeh Shiga RIP
yeah the comment is 2 months old.
but lbry is still breathing, it has cool technology also.
Yeah it pains my soul that Google this much market share in this field.
Talking about De-Googling on UA-cam, owned by Google.
He mentioned in the beginning that he'd already somewhat failed for this reason.
Telling people to get off Google on a platform not owned by Google sounds pretty redundant don't you think?
Check out mailing... Inbox.lv

Yep. It is so sad. But we still have BitChute and minds.com :)
and real.video and d.tube and mewe, freedomvine, infinity sn, hubbook, codias, oneway, mastodon.social
I really trust google to not misuse its powers.
You're stupid!
Love your videos but I have to laugh read your title of your of your video on Google own UA-cam
Google is so cool!
UA-cam is Google...
Trump 2020!!!!i
If you de googled your life then why are you posting on youtube.
MΛRTYNΛSPLΛYZ he said de-googling not de-googled. Pay attention!
"De-Googling my life"
As he posts his vlog onto a google website.
Sure thing buddy.
I mean, he kinda acknowledged that as a failure in the first 2 minutes of the video. So, I'm going to assume he's *not* a hypocrite.
