His comments about the refusal of the establishment to criticize Biden are why I’ve always felt two ways about how dangerous Trump is. On the one hand, we see everything that he has done/said. The guy is very clear about his intentions. On the other hand, the fact that establishment Democrats weren’t screaming from the rooftops about it makes me wonder how scared they actually are. They continually approach this as “business as usual” and not the existential threat that they occasionally say it is. So which is it? Is he actually as dangerous as we’re told? Or is this mostly exaggerated for the sake of votes?
Astead says it perfectly. The democratic party's refusal to find a candidate "good enough" to beat trump is baffling and should be embarrassing for anyone affiliated with them.
Harris is/was ok, at the end of the day it is (mostly unintentional) rascism and sexism that kept people from voting for her…i mean she tried to please everyone and she still gets slack for supposedly forgetting the workers, the men, the this and that…the fact that Trump forgets women and nearly all minorities is hardly ever a (serious) issue…
Why did Joe run again when he said he would be a 1 term president? Also how could they have found a candidate in such a short time with all the deadlines looming? Harris had the benefit of already being on the primary ticket.
The Americans had a better choice in Kamala but decided to go for the racist, sexist billionaire. Kamala is not the problem. The majority of Americans are.
Biden never said he wouldn't run for a second term. After Biden dropped out, anyone was allowed to throw their hat into the ring to get voted on by the delegates at the convention. They chose not campaign and got behind Harris.
No, thats bullshit. He is falling into that same old trap that says democrats are the only people in politics with agency, while the Republicans are forces of nature to be contained. He is also on record saying that Roe v Wade being overturned is Democrats fault. Bullshit.
Right lol all you have to do is look at the panel 100% NOT hearing what he is saying and cutting him off. Scale that up and you have the Trump landslide
Anybody who has stepped outside of the art gala functions that establishment snobs hang out at understands it. If you work at a job that makes about $90k a year or less, you know plenty of people who will tell you exactly how they feel about all of this.
@@FoulWeatherFriend385 They are also staunchly against open border and illegal migration, being outright complacent on crime, and focusing on trivial issues that don’t actually impact the lives of people - like abortion. The strategy predictably failed.
First time listener here and Alstead, as a Hispanic woman voter thank you for articulating my exact thoughts. This is a catastrophic failure of the DNC and if they do not take this loss as a lesson they are going to repeat this year over year.
@@Vivianagg11 American liberalism is dead for at least a generation. The democrat party is going to be like the Washington generals. While the Republicans will be the Harlem globe trotters. There is no coming back from this.
Americans want(ed) change. Back in 2016 Sanders offered that. The democrats said "nope, things are good the way they are". These same Americans who want change are desperate for it and while Trump may not be their first choice, at least it satisfies change. I wish it were more complicated but it's not. Inequality is at record highs and that is what is driving these feelings and manifested in their daily lives and personal budgets. At the fork in the road they chose change but could have chosen positive change rather than whatever this is. It's really heartbreaking.
The worst thing about the Democratic Party is they choose the nominee instead of having honest primaries. There's a "it's their time to run" after putting in work for a few decades. They have a similar problem to what the GOP had with neocons. Honestly, they're run by the progressive version of neocons now. They're for progressive domestic policy, but still want to play world police like Bush and Cheney. The Cheneys enduring endorsing Harris is proof.
Bernie Sanders is not the solution. Leftist Democrats and Bernie Bros want to believe it is, but his policies aren't supported by working class people, which the Democrats have lost. The people that support Bernie and his policies are college-educated young voters. Democrats already have that demographic. The answer is clearly not moving further left. Kamala Harris was a more progressive candidate and got destroyed
Listening from outside the US, I have to say Astead's coverage of this whole campaign (I listened to his previous episodes on the road) was very illuminating, as is his comments in the video. Friends of mine were so sure this is 100% fueled by racism, hatred of women, etc., the usual culture war arguments, but I think he's right that people are not happy with the economy and wanted to vote for the other person, given that they were offered continuity by the Democrats. And, sadly, most people just don't care enough about more "ethereal" values like democracy, rule of law, human rights, etc. Economic comfort wins every time. I just hope Trump's presidency is not a big catastrophe for the rest of the world.
It will be disastrous for the world. Ukraine, Taiwan- and then the after affects Europe- world economy- and Americans basically gave Elon the keys the country. INSANE!
Perhaps they care about corruption Biden/Burisma, political scapegoating J6 prisoners, manufactured Russia hoax, non crime crimes like the felony convictions, bogus impeachment, maybe they want border security and lower crime, energy independence again, unconstitutional vaccine mandates and discharging military personnel over a healthcare decision. Maybe a few of those.
Astead needs his own show. He clearly is the most intelligent, articulate and insightful person of this video. It's not even close. I am a Democrat. It's time to listen and learn. Stop the unintelligible, obtuse excuses.
Are you serious? The party abandoned Biden because the so called donors and elites of the party wanted Kamala instead and Biden gone. Biden has handed America one of the best economies in the nations history but the D party primary focus was on abortion, which the overwhelming majority of people don’t actually care about.
Usually podcast settings look different from what I imagined but this is pretty much spot on. The host’s face doesn’t really match the voice I had in my head though lol
Eh, unusually high turnout in 2020 with lots of people cooped up at home bathing in politics thanks to COVID. If there was apathy, it was only on one side.
His standpoint allows him to call those issues he mentioned for what they are. Really good discussion overall for such an early time since the election.
So true. By far the smartest in the room. In fact, Black commentators are making many of the most insightful take downs of the Democrat's belief in their Rainbow Privilege entitlement. As in Beyonce should sew up the Black vote, with Harris faking enough "y'alls" at the rallies.
I have listened to every pod Astead has been in, for years now. He is one of very few who really tries to understand everyone he interacts with. With people like him in the democrat party, we wouldnt be where we unfortunatley are right now. Thank you also for a great podcast, love the daily. Henrik from Sweden.
Perhaps because the Democratic mindset assumes that Blacks would be onside, some Black commentators feel an obligation to be more insightful in their analysis - more skeptical of the Dem narratives.
1. Biden is so smart, but Bernie would have been a better leader for the people. 2. Once Biden did get in, he should have stuck to his original promise and not run again. 3. Once Biden exited, there should have been an open primary. 4. Harris ran a stellar campaign, but she is weak in speaking on economy, and did not show clearly how she would differ from Biden. She was more or less married to the Biden administration. 5. Many people are angry. They see houses and cars as impossible to afford, college impossible to afford, and good jobs going over seas. 6. Immigration has been a challenge, not handled as well as it could have been. 7. Harris’ main point of Abortion Rights was a mistake. 8. Democrats have had a deaf ear to where the average and lower income person is at. 9. Fake news has taken over. 10. People are lacking in historical, political interest or understanding. Lack of civic interest or understanding. 11. The drama of Trump is entertaining - people have no idea what they just voted for 12. Understanding of government, trust of government, valuing what government does is not present in a majority of people. 13. Covid brought out anger and paranoia of medicine, government, you name it, people are still upset. 14. Most the free world is leaning far right, and it seems to be an unstoppable train
If you blame 5 and 8 on Democrats and think the GOP is for the working man, your understanding of politics since the Reagan era is on a kindergarten level and you are punching the wrong people. But the cycle will repeat, and you won't learn. Make America Educated Again. 13. You can blame on the Trump administration. How in the world do you turn that into a Democrat problem?
This was a really good pod tbh. All of the points are valid and the critiques of the democrats are legit. Blaming the voters is a cope, this was a resounding DNC failure.
The voters knowingly voted for a felon who tried to overturn the last election because his ego couldn't handle being a loser. The voters have responsibility for their choice.
This entire discussion assumes the voters are all as informed and intellectual as you all. I don' think that most voters have thought nearly as deep about democratic norms as you're giving them credit for.
Thank you Astead for putting my feelings in to words. No thanks to Lisa for her negative comments and body language towards Astead who was there to work rather than judge.
The media, including newspapers, broadcast, networks, cable, and Internet, should reflect on how it has been complicit, intentional, or not, in Donald Trump’s success.
It's really very simple to understand. ANYONE who actually LIKES the way that Donald Trump speaks and behaves in public. . . is actually JUST LIKE Donald Trump in the way that THEY speak and behave in public.
Your team called Trump Hitler for the last two years, and you’ve lied about him for the last 10. You should look in the mirror if you want to find out what went wrong with your election.
I'm sure calling people racist, sexist, and Hitler will work if you keep at it. The only people who believe these lies at this point at hard lefties and progressives who keep drinking the Kool Aid. The world has moved on.
The Democratic party needs to take a good hard look inward and they need to change. They need to move towards populism because they simply aren't connecting with average Americans on a fundamental level, and blaming it on Biden, sexism, racism, or anything else will be a huge mistake. Americans have shown they aren't happy with the system and they want the system to change.
I agree, we need to hone in on our meassage regarding sex changes for small children, I think we needed to address the nuances of Gender Care for Minors, I think it freaked a lot of parents out when Shcool teachers are openly sexulizing kids, maybe America wasn't ready for that, just saying....
Change from what? From talking about policies based on reality and data rather than appealing to emotions just to get elected? Instead, Dems should let Trump whatever it does, and let the American suffer the consequences not their ignorance and stupidity for trying to live in a delusional world such thinking that the economy is in bad shape. (Exit polls said 67% voters thought the economy was no good or really bad) If the people don't experience the results of their decisions, they will not change. Let the people see the reality. I hope GOP now repeals Obamacare. Let's see all these non college working class people many of whom depend on Medicaid or subsidized ACA plans and predicting condition lose their insurance. If I were a Dem rep or senator I would vote for repeal. I hope the Senate will get rid of filibuster rubbing on the face of Munchin and Sinema and pass a national abortion ban (and Trump will sign it after pressure from Christians) and let's see the results for the people who voted for abortion rights in Florida (to 57%) and also voted for Scott (57%)and Trump (56%) see the stick up your behind for their stupidity. Until you let this run its course for the people suffer the consequences of their votes, everything you do as Dems to block the suffering will be temporary. Let the people see the consequences. Let them lose their healthcare, unions and bargaining power, let them lose their rights.
I got that when were going through COVID. It took at least a year to recover from how completely it wrecked my belief in not just fellow humans, but governments in general. I still don't have faith in governments, but I have a spark of hope for fellow humans. However, it's incredibly evident that capitalistic individualism will always make people more concerned over their own comfort over someone else's literal life.
People didn't vote for Harris (Biden 2.0) because: 1. a cost-of-living & housing crisis 2. a border crisis 3. a sovereign debt crisis 4. a new land war in Europe 5. a spiraling war in the Middle East 6. a pseudo-genocide in Gaza 7. two new civil wars in Africa 8. a deepening crisis in the South China Sea 9. North Korea sending troops to fight in Europe and ending reconciliation 10. rampant identity politics in the media & academia 11. Democrats gaslighting the country about Biden's cognitive state 12. Democrats skipping their primary 13. And finally, in spite of all of that, your insistence that they're actually just racists lol You guys seriously need a wakeup call. It's things like this that caused the democrats to loose this race. It's is completely departed from reality. This is exactly what democrats said in 2016. None of the terrible things democrats said were going to happen, happened. Then from 2020 till now, things were not great. Now, you expect people to ignore what they already know and have lived through. Why?
Too late. Trump plans to dismantle the Department of Education and the EPA. He's going to stuff the SCOTUS. He will put RFK jr at the head of FDA and NIH. As a Canadian who has watched with keen interest, I’m dismayed and disappointed, but not surprised. I consider myself left-leaning, but even here in Canada, I am daily bombarded with progressive ideology embodied in identity politics and victim rhetoric that has become the signature of leftist politics. At no point has the left recognized that this is not “winning”. People are sick of being told that they are somehow responsible for perceived or imagined inequalities, and despite my distaste for him, trump’s win is a referendum on this. It’s time for the left to reassess their priorities and re-evaluate their values outside of blame, victimization, and inequality
I'm a left leaning Canadian too and agree those topics you mentioned are highly esoteric and impractical. A distraction. Canadians are practical people who want to thrive and survive. The economy is great though. My wealth has skyrocketed in the past 4 years. People need to learn how to save and invest instead of blaming the president for their problems.
With worse economy? Do Americans understand numbers? It's hard to believe that you do. Your inflation is way down compared to anywhere else in the world. Thank Biden for that. And no, inflation wasn't Biden's fault. It was a global phenomenon and still is. Stock market is through the roof and you have more people working than ever. Most countries across the pond would switch with you in a heartbeat. But don't worry: here comes the Tariff Man with his tax breaks to burn it all down in four years again. And that Trump voters are in fact a reflection of this permanent shift in reality? Who knew that when reduced to our impulses we become reactionary children? Now let me get back to my candy crush.
Yeah, there's a cycle. Things get more permissive, until it goes to far and then people want things to go back to normal. But I think the cycle is speeding up.
Probably in poor taste to mention this. Some basic historical facts and all. Best to fall into line and join the wailing, the sack cloth and ashes, the rending of garments and breast beating. (Otherwise, you might be accused of being a Republican.)
The media feed off Trump. He's insane and you never know what you will get today and that makes him popular. I want a president in tan suits that are boring
Hard disagree. Just because you beat someone once doesn't mean you are capable of beating them again. The reason why Biden won in 2020 was because Trump's term was so abysmal (especially with COVID at the end) that the American people would choose anything over the concurrent administration. If Kamala had been the candidate in 2020, she likely would have won as well. Coming out of a mediocre term at best with some very high profile failures (Afghan withdrawal fuckup, failure of deterrence in Ukraine, the ongoing conflicts there and in the mideast, the situation at the border, etc.), the dems were almost set up to fail by poor governance by the Biden admin. That failure was to be assured if they ran an establishment candidate. They did so twice: once with Biden until it was clear that he was sure to lose to Trump after the debates and subsequent polling, and then with Harris, who offered no novelty and no significant achievements to point to, and who was viewed with distrust because of suspiciously prompt (upon accession to the nomination) policy flip flops. Biden himself also delayed pulling out of the race for a solid month, if memory serves, and that further truncated the campaign that Harris put together at the tail end of the election cycle. Add in an unwillingness to clearly callout the bullshit in their own party- the identitarian nonsense coming from the American far left which drove enough people rightwards (the so-called "Sista Soulja moment"), and a Trump victory was without question. The failure doesn't rest on any one person uniquely, but with the culture within the democratic party as a whole. Certain people are deserving of their share of the blame more-so than others though, and one of them is Joe Biden.
You're not entirely wrong, but neither should Trump. I didn't sit at home because of kamala, i sat at home because of dems stance on immigration, gaza, and my complete lack of faith that they will brung legitimate tangible material benefits.
Him holding out until the summer leading up the election has everything to do with why the dems lost. By the time he was FORCED out, there was not enough time to hold an actual primary to see how the American people were feeling. We forced to have Harris as our candidate who was too deeply connected to an unpopular current administration. Biden should’ve stepped away from a 2nd term in 2022 to give a potential candidate the opportunity to run in a dem primary. We got kneecapped…

When are we going to admit to ourselves that America just won’t elect a black woman. I live in an extremely conservative area and people who were hesitantly accepting of Obama were completely against Harris. It isn’t about policy. A lot of my peers don’t even know what the policy is. It’s about the person.
She doesn’t get to just win because she is a woman of color. She was a terrible candidate who couldn’t win a primary. The democrats made many many mistakes over the last 4 years and if you can’t see that you are the one with the problem. Wake up democrats.
But democrats didn't know tat. And lost election now. Who should be blamed then. People not growing up. Or leaders removed from people whom they represent.
I guarantee you there will be a black woman president within the next 30 years. Most likely republican. When blacks start to realize the democratic party isn't on their side and they make the switch the nation will rejoice.
I'm a Democrat and Kamala supporter. Democrats have nobody to blame but themselves (meaning mostly leadership, but also many of us members). Stop blaming the black men, (who still voted for Dems nearly 8 out of 10). Stop blaming Hispanic men who vote for you (still) overwhelmingly. Kamala lost because of rural white men. I am a white guy, and I live in Missouri - so I live amongst them. Democrats have written off and disregarded this part of the electorate, instead pandering to small groups and arguing over which liberal policy should be enacted to help this small group, or that small group. They mock them and their comments, make fun of them, point fingers and laugh at them. Instead, they need to start making government work for these men, with tangible results. It may already be too late, because most of them are suckling at the bosom of A.M. radio, Sean Hannity, Fox News, and Joe Rogan - just to name a few. These men are FULL of white grievance over perceived slights, perceived victimhood and how life is completely unfair (to them). Look. I'm not saying don't do more liberal agendas for other demographics, I'm simply saying you need to start talking to these folks, start listening to legitimate gripes and actually do things that are making a difference in their day to day lives. When I saw the percentages of +3, +4 and +5 rural votes across south and throughout the midwest...who do you think that is? You can't just swing in ever 4 years and check-in and promise them the world and give them nothing. You need to play local politics in the county and city level in these areas...go in and fix their roads, bridges, public schools, wages...stop representing yourself like the educated elite, and turn your nose up at the "uneducated." Go into these areas, roll up your sleeves and do the hard work. Without that, the country is truly lost. I'm so sad today.
@@josesarango3408 - Kamala was an good candidate and by all accounts a decent human being, running as an incumbent on an unpopular ticket (and a bi-racial woman). He is, in effect, their grievances personified, unleashed upon a government and institution they see as not caring about their needs and their issues.
Unfortunately we do have to talk about Demographics here because there's a serious problem in the DNC with Hispanic/Latino voters when half of both women and men are voting for Trump despite everything he's said and done. A real problem. But White Women went for Trump too, which is crazy
You should probably consider that a lot of the stuff you THINK he's said and done, he didn't actually do. Outlets like the NYT LOVE to clip Trump out of context. The Madison Square Garden rally is a perfect example. They complained about a speaker being "racist", but the guy is literally a roast comedian - that's what he does. Most people in the country who actually listened to him thought he was hilarious - including Jon Stewart.
Hispanic voters tend to be more socially conservative and small-business/entrepreneurial oriented. They also want to prioritize legal immigration. You cannot have people like AOC be the face of the party. Most Latinos do not want socialism or free handouts. That is emasculating. Socialism is emasculating. Enough with the socialism, the open borders (you are a racist if you criticize immigration policies), and the woke identity politics.
My guess is that proximity to whiteness was more important to them. They threw their non-citizen brethren under the bus because they were making them look bad in the eyes of white ppl. It’s not that complicated. 🤷🏾♀️
Let’s talk a little bit about what democrats have said and done. They need to look in the mirror rather than looking around hatefully at other people to blame.
Some of the most sane comments I've heard all year long. Good job on articulating yourselves well and just being genuine and fair. Great balance here. Kudos
Dems lost moderates like me. I live in NYC and the immigration policies that allow the hotels in Manhattan to be full of immigrants while there are hardworking people just above the poverty level that could use that money to help them advance is disgusting. I think that the stats show that immigration is necessary to a strong economy given the population decline, but we should be selective. The dems are out of touch with the moderates and in comparison are making the republicans look more moderate.
What a load of horsecrap. I live in NYC, too, and my company works with hotels in NYC and none of the fucking hotels are "full of immigrants" because guess what those immigrants can't fucking afford hotels in NYC.
This is just entirely wrong. Kamala’s campaign was the average milquetoast minor reform product the dems pushed back in 2016. In no way shape or form do the republicans look like a moderate party. You’re either a republican or a bot if you have this opinion
I think they touched on an important topic: our primary process is fundamentally broken. Every four years we gravitate between so few choices that one person is the "chosen one" (see: Clinton, Harris) or so many that voters can't decide and then one person elbows their way to the front (see: Biden, Trump). I'm not sure what the answer to fix that is. Maybe it is taking the temperature of the party as they've said, but it just seems to me like Americans for better or worse won't vote those people in as their choice for the election, not since Obama have I felt that way.
Here's a quote from the Washington Post that, for me, encapsulates this electoral outcome: "Ultimately, voters focused heavily on their economic dissatisfaction, and that was primarily the result of an inflation rate (which peaked at 9 percent in 2022) that was unacceptable to them. It's hard to hold the White House when the inflation rate hits 9 percent under your watch." -- "Voter anger over economy boosts Trump in 2024, baffling Democrats" by Jeff Stein and Abha Bhattarai, November 6, 2024 In my opinion, Vice President Harris ran a nearly flawless race. Regardless of which Democratic candidate ran in 2024, he or she was bound to lose because enough Americans believed that the country was on the wrong track. Democratic candidate "X", selected through a Democratic primary process in 2023-2024, would've faced this same reality. I voted for Harris/Walz.
I voted third party. A lot of us stayed home over Gaza. Was that the main issue? No. But it was one of three or for where this disingenuous party claims to be for workers, the poor, the disspossed and then embraces foreign facists and takes thier money while warning us of domestic fascism. Its not that people voted for trump. They stayed home. I voted 3rd party. My candidate was "Not one more bomb". Not trump is not enough. We need a reason to vote. And this is coming from someone who never missed an election and always voted blue no matter who. This time the genocide hypocrisy was too disgusting to swallow voting for blue. And yes ive lost a unborn baby that needed to be aborted due to unviability. It was terrifying and heart breaking. Im glad my partner had that right and we could try again? But why does she have that right when my Tax dollars go to slaughtering newborns, sniping orphans, and branding people with numbers? But i cannot justify my rights at the expense of the women and children of Gaza who Harris betrayed with her moral cowardice.
People only think of themselves in this country. I personally don’t remember the economy being so wonderful! If they think he is going to help grocery prices go down I think there is going to be some disappointment. Just my thought. I am truly sad for our country.
That take doesn’t explain the 2022 midterms though, right? Peak inflation, and yet it was still possible for dems to largely fend off of red wave, why was it different then? Shouldn’t this election have been similar? I think it’s because democrats didn’t show the change people wanted
I think the focus is placed too much on what the democrats could have done differently, what worked and what didn't work. Not enough focus is being placed on the complete disregard of the American people to facts. The fact Trump got elected again is a failure of our society to properly educate people on things such as ethics and morals. The reality is that the bottom half of America is the least educated amongst developed nations in the world. It's difficult to have these complex conversations with people who are barely literate adults who "cant be told nuthin" Our society always has been and always will be the bottom of the barrel in terms of education. The majority of the American people are objectively undereducated and that is an unquestionable fact. In order to win elections, you must pander to those uneducated people. You have to stoop down to their level, and quit expecting them to move up to yours. We have to operate like the adults in our country are 3rd graders... Because intellectually, they are.
100%. Public Education has always been an afterthought in our country. And it benefits the Republican Party and special interests to keep it that way. Can’t have a a constituency that thinks critically, ya know?
Wow, this is the kind of condescending attitude that lost the democrats the election. People vote their own interests. Just because they are different from yours doesn’t make them stupid. This post is a perfect representation of what the Democratic Party has become.
@zwatwashdc It's not condescending when it's a fact that America ranks 30th out of 32 developed nations in Math, language arts, and sciences. The people who rank at the bottom of America's list is at the bottom of all developed nations in the world. Americans don't even know how stupid they are, and live life in a vacuum thinking they know everything. More often than not, people vote against their own interests because they're too dumb to realize it. Why the poorest and most uneducated areas in this country are all in Red states. Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Alabama, Louisiana. Lowest in terms of income, lowest in terms of education. The least amount of social services. See the correlation here?
@zwatwashdc I wish people in suburban areas would get out more and experience more of this country. Get out of your surburan parking garages, take a break from your local watering hole once in a blue moon and talk to people in rural Kentucky, in the heart of New Orleans, the hills of West Virginia. This country has so much poverty that stems from the lack of education in Red states, we legit have missionaries from other countries that do more for those people than their elected officials ever have.
I would compare the Obama playbook to a great sports star who ends up being a terrible coach because the talent doesn't translate. His centrist establishment schtick wasn't what carried him and without his uniquely inspiring quality as a candidate we can see that. For whatever reason Democrats can't accept that reality and move on.
Elon Musk says that about the economy (which is the best in the world btw). He says he needs to tank the economy for a while and people truly suffer before building it back. Not in a way that would hurt him or his kind though.
@ All the stats point to a better economy, unemployment rate, etc… The only thing that hit them was inflation due to the pandemic and that occurred in all countries. Inflation is now back down and so are interest rates and falling. Stock market is at record highs. So objectively, the country is doing better.

Astead's critiques are fresh and clear, ones I haven't heard yet and make sense he sees through the matrix. He is showing accountability and a real insight into the democratic party that needs to be discussed further
A friend shared this poem by Venice Williams. It brought me some comfort, and perhaps it will for you, too. I'm embracing the idea of being "a vessel of nourishing joy." You are awakening to the same country you fell asleep to. The very same country. Pull yourself together. And, when you see me, do not ask me "What do we do now? How do we get through the next four years?" Some of my Ancestors dealt with at least 400 years of this under worse conditions. Continue to do the good work. Continue to build bridges not walls. Continue to lead with compassion. Continue the demanding work of liberation for all. Continue to dismantle broken systems, large and small. Continue to set the best example for the children. Continue to be a vessel of nourishing joy. Continue right where you are. Right where you live into your days. Do so in the name of The Creator who expects nothing less from each of us. And if you are not "continuing" ALL of the above, in community, partnership, collaboration? What is it you have been doing? What is it you are waiting for?
“The strategic adversary is fascism... the fascism in us all, in our heads and in our everyday behavior, the fascism that causes us to love power, to desire the very thing that dominates and exploits us.” ― Michel Foucault
Our prejudices and analyses are totally correct. They remain correct regardless of the election's results/facts. People voted for the wrong candidate. We must change the people. Long live our liberal and tolerant Democracy.
The fact that you actually believe he's gonna be a dictator is why he won. Not everyone is susceptible to fake news. On one hand you say he lies about everything. On the other hand you believe an obvious joke as if it's gospel. Does he lie or is he super duper truthful when you want him to be?
Astead's analysis is correct. This is a simple story. The economy is broken in America for everyone but the top. People are existentially hurting. That's why this happened.
And again, if you think the "economy is broken" because of the Democrats, I really don't think you should be voting. Congrats on learning nothing in four plus decades.
Give Astead an hour to talk to us directly please with no interuptions. He knows whats up.
Astead is the only person speaking truth here. I've had all these conversations with friends. He absolutely had his finger on the pulse.
I don't think the others have ever left Manhattan
The host and Lisa spoke over him. Reflecting exactly the mistakes the Democrats made in this election.
Who is Astead?
@@Skindred727the black man.

@@captainbobsparrow9092yep i reluctantly voted for Harris

Astead’s analysis is spot on here.
Unfortunately I don't think anyone in the Democratic party will make that same connection or make any change to do better next time.
it was really obvious, kamala was the worst choice they could have made. She would never win the primaries
Are you serious? The party abandoned Biden because the so called donors and elites of the party wanted Kamala instead and Biden gone. Considering that 17 million less voters showed up, and even the winner got 2 million less votes than previously, "apathy" is what won this election.

She was more
or less married to the Biden administration.

The Democratic party needs to take a good hard look inward and they need to change. They need to move towards populism because they simply aren't connecting with average Americans on a fundamental level, and blaming it on Biden, sexism, racism, or anything else will be a huge mistake. Why do we have to keep looking at ourselves when they never do? Are we supposed to lie like the other side and sellout our values in order to win?

Instead, Dems should let Trump whatever it does, and let the American suffer the consequences not their ignorance and stupidity for trying to live in a delusional world such thinking that the economy is in bad shape. (Exit polls said 67% voters thought the economy was no good or really bad)

@@sally4026 They primarily think he was a victim of legal weaponization by the Biden administration. To be fair, that is what they are fed constantly by the media bubble they live in. It's helpful to understand that the right-wing media universe in the US is extremely siloed. They often don't see what the rest of the country sees.
@@sally4026Easy, Trump say crazy shit and voter don’t care and Trump say something they like? They care.Since Trump said and do so much things, there’s no way of people fact check everything.People slowly just stop caring about what bad things he said and did but the message they like.
And this comment is why democrats will keep losing- because they just can’t hear what people are saying. Even when those people are their relatives and friends
@@sally4026 they don’t care because they don’t think he committed any crimes. The true maga people are delusional. They love the antisemitic, racist rhetoric and want him to go after the people they hate.
We're a nation of idiots.
This is the correct take.
The country fixes itself when things go too far. Look at the 20's. Look at the 70's. When things get nutty, the US resets.
Yup, all these nutjobs are too far left, and what they fail to realize , is their jobs are on the chopping block. This is a clear rejection of wokeism, and progresseveism.
There's absolutely no guarantee of that, and every indication that America will never have a free and fair election again. Putin is now on speed dial.
Historically, yes. Is it possible though that society is fundamentally different now, that we're crossed a technological tipping point into functioning in a radially different way, with entirely different motivations?
Astead said what needed to be said. Period.
I'm sorry but blaming Biden shouldn't be in this conversation. He's the only democrat to beat Trump so far.
So you give up our democracy for someone elses war? You think trump is gping to help gaza? lol
@@CenTexMex101 so the orange guy who is in bed with Bibi will save Gaza and they will fix immigration like the last time... oh wait. Are you one of those people who watches Fox for their Monday "caravan at the border" clips? The GOP will just give tax breaks to the rich, balloon the deficit, destroy the economy. Same song and dance since Reagan. But boy did you show the democrats. /s don't worry, they will fix it once again in 4-8 years and then you can once again stay home to teach them a lesson. JFC.
The Daily is drenched in shame for sane washing Trump for a year.
Thank you Astead for truth ❤
Let’s just say the obvious - America picked the lowest common denominator candidate!
Crazy part is Tulsi probably could’ve checked the boxes if we got 2020 version
He ran on hate. This is what I am trying to understand. This is my new reality. I want to leave the country but I can’t at the moment. But I’ve lived on three continents and I don’t want to be part of this “America”.
Nate, you really think he ran a more disciplined campaign this time around?
When are we going to admit to ourselves that America just won’t elect a black woman. I live in an extremely conservative area and people who were hesitantly accepting of Obama were completely against Harris. It isn’t about policy. A lot of my peers don’t even know what the policy is. It’s about the person.
She doesn’t get to just win because she is a woman of color. She was a terrible candidate who couldn’t win a primary. The democrats made many many mistakes over the last 4 years and if you can’t see that you are the one with the problem. Wake up democrats.
This 💯
I wonder what that is about this country because many other countries have had women leaders.
Well I guess we all like Astead
Astead speaks the truth
The sane-washers are back
The 2020s have been a long decade. It’s about to get a lot longer.
amazing how it takes a loss for them to be able to suddenly view the other side objectively
Really appreciate Astead Herndon and his work on the Run Up and contributions here
I'm a Democrat and Kamala supporter.
Wow, this might be the first Kamala supporter I respect
@@josesarango3408 - Kamala was an good candidate and by all accounts a decent human being, running as an incumbent on an unpopular ticket (and a bi-racial woman). Donald Trump is a horrible person, and by nearly all accounts a malignant narcissist - but in Donald Trump's victim hood, blaming others for his problems, and his insults and dog whistle racism - rural white men have found their hero, their literal white night.

Why is the panel blaming democrats and not the voters.
Asteed should be running the Democrat party from now on
Some of the most sane comments I've heard all year long. Good job on articulating yourselves well and just being genuine and fair. Great balance here. Kudos
Watching these people talk themselves into accepting authoritarianism on American soil, how easily we fall
We will all enjoy his failures and work towards the midterms
Astead is spot on and Lisa interrupts and dismisses him. Good job helping him prove his point!
I wish Astead was the campaign manager
It's hard to hold the White House when the inflation rate hits 9 percent under your watch."
-- "Voter anger over economy boosts Trump in 2024, baffling Democrats" by Jeff Stein and Abha Bhattarai, November 6, 2024
In my opinion, Vice President Harris ran a nearly flawless race.
I am truly sad for our country.
they don't see the have a traitor, criminal, fraudster, thief and a mental patient as a leader ?
I agree with that analysis. A democracy requires an electorate with a basic fund of knowledge.
The turning point of this election was the Biden-Trump debate.
Often people have to really suffer in order to open their eyes to who Trump really is. Unfortunately, the rest of us who know, will also suffer.
Most people think the country was better off 4 years ago. Are you so sure people aren't suffering now, wanting a change?
Elon Musk says that about the economy (which is the best in the world btw). He says he needs to tank the economy for a while and people truly suffer before building it back. Not in a way that would hurt him or his kind though.
@ All the stats point to a better economy, unemployment rate, etc…
The only thing that hit them was inflation due to the pandemic and that occurred in all countries.
Inflation is now back down and so are interest rates and falling.
Stock market is at record highs.
So objectively, the country is doing better.
sending lots of love and light to those who are unable to grasp the reality we are facing. we must hold our loves ones tight and remember that we will get through this
The argument that a different Republican wouldve done better than trump just shows how goddamn clueless you establishment dems are.

How do we get through the next four years?"

Continue to do the good work.
Continue to build bridges not walls.
Continue to lead with compassion.
Continue the demanding work

Continue to dismantle broken systems,

Continue to set the best example
for the children.
Continue to be a vessel of nourishing joy.
Continue right where you are.
Right where you live into your days.
Do so in the name of
The Creator who expects
nothing less from each of us.
And if you are not "continuing"
ALL of the above,
in community, partnership, collaboration?
What is it you have been doing?
What is it you are waiting for?

Astead's analysis is correct. This is a simple story. The economy is broken in America for everyone but the top. People are existentially hurting. That's why this happened.
But anyone with a brain knows trump will make things worse for the poor and better for the ultra rich
And again, if you think the "economy is broken" because of the Democrats, I really don't think you should be voting. Congrats on learning nothing in four plus decades.
