I was a student at MI when Scott was there (Robben Ford was a counselor). We knew watching him jam back then that he was extraordinary. My favorite non-musical memory that year was Scott bringing his dog to school. He would lay down and go to sleep until it was time to move on to the next class.
@@Xtianisms It's been so long, I don't remember specifically but I'm sure they did (this was back in '81-'82). As I recall, Scott was the go-to student to jam with a visiting musician after Q&A's. I'd have to dig up the yearbook, but I believe Journey's Steve Smith was one of them (with Jeff Berlin on bass). Here's my favorite non-music memory that year: Scott would bring his dog to school; an elderly blind basset hound. He would snap his fingers walking through the halls so the dog could follow him. Once in the classroom, Scott would sit on the end of a row and the dog would plop down and go to sleep. And then on to the next class.
"My favorite non-musical memory that year was Scott bringing his dog to school. He would lay down and go to sleep until it was time to move on to the next class." The dog? Or Scott?
Gotta love Scott❤️ He taught at MI in the 80’s.... he told me in a one on one lesson ”you will never be able to play jazz” 30 years later I can say he was right even though I’ve had a great career in music. I reminded him of his words at Namm 2017... he was so humble and apologetic... great player, lovely guy🙏🙏🙏
What a talent! Had the pleasure of seeing SH with Jeff Berlin in a tiny club with a criminally small audience. They didn’t care and it was a night of amazing music! Scott is one of the best. And I was also a huge Gentle Giant fan! Gives me hope that after more than 50 years playing I still have so much to learn. Awesome interview.
No matter what Scott is my number 1 favorite player. Such a unique voice on the instrument and his compositions with Gary and tribal tech are so phenomenal
Great interview. Packed with insight and even comedy - Josh’s silence when Scott says Charlie Parker just sounded like old Dixie jazz to him. Love Bird... Scott’s talk about enjoying playing when he isn’t thinking about ‘performing’... Remember when a musician interview was just a single page of content spread over 5 pages in a magazine, and was 50% ‘here’s my new album’ and 50% ‘here’s some stories you’ve heard a hundred times before’. Thanks for doing these interviews Josh. I see Joe Bonamassa interviewed Jools Holland recently - maybe he can hook you up for the ‘Later...’ gig? I’m full of hope that it’s going to happen before Jools retires!
Scott! Anyone that loves your music hears your distinctive style. You have a unique sound on the guitar and a definite legend! Thanks for the great playing.
Love Scott H, good ol days jammin with Scott in 95, at MI remember those days! Thank you for the awesome interview with Scott. He is a true GIANT of Jazz! Love it!
Yet another 5 star streamJosh. Not only are you an outstanding player, your presentation and interviewing skills are up there too. I’m enjoying this one!
I've been looking forward to this and finally got to it this evening. I can't tell you how many times I've watched Scott's first 2 VHS videos. I actually had them converted to digital and still have them around because they are so good. Love all the stories too.
Scott was at GIT when I was there. A beast. I had never heard of him or Robben Ford, Don Mock, Joe Diorio, Etc. It was such a great time. Paul Gilbert was one of my teachers one on one. Its was the height of metal (early 80's), but Albert Lee came and Albert Collins and I was blown away. It was F'n great.
I'm just goin' thru the Scott Henderson jazz- rock mastery dvd. A whole world is opening up thru his lessons. My mind is completely blown by a prolific amount of scale and chord possibilities.
Great interview !! I was at MI in 92/93 when Scott was doing regular open counseling sessions there and was always in awe of his playing. Still, have the cassette tape recordings of those sessions :). Whoever he was playing with, it was always special. Since then I've always tried to go see him play whenever he's around in Europe.
gosh that was awesome times. without internet. everything had value, every information, every new lick, every new song you did not heard before was precious.
Josh is so delightfully intelligent and articulate. Having a degree in music, I love the Musicology thing he brings. In addition to his soulfullness way beyond his years...
this was awesome and really clicked with me. I took a similar path to Jazz as Scott, being a 'rock' player who traversed into jazz via rnb/funk and even prog. Interesting how that journey connects to later Miles and Coltrane. Scott really hit it on the head, there is story telling and a moodiness to that music, a 'vibe' that is shared in rock and prog but in a different way. Thanks for this Josh
Mr Smith' this has to be for me, the most informing and enlightening interview yet the questions you asked Mr Henderson ..took this to a higher level. thank you
Incredible stuff, thanks for the interview. Was totally blown away by Scott's unique music from the first hearing, about 20 yrs ago. Well to the Bone is still one of my favourite albums ever, those tasty vocal lines! And Tribal Tech of course, what a band they were!
Hey Josh, just wanted to let you know that because of you doing this interview and obviously your playing in general, you have become my most favorite Musician hands down. I can’t even tell you how much respect and love I have for you after seeing this interview. Also just listening to you just the past month is so inspiring, keep up the great work, thanks for all you do...
One of the best interviews I've heard in a while. Josh, you're one of my favorite guitar players, but you definitely have a knack for this, I love how naturally the interview flows. Great, great job. 😊
Thank you guys so, so much. The interview was insightful, and, at times, funny as shit. Great questions....and Scott H gave some really great insights into his music, people he's played with, the music biz, and plenty of other things as well. Wonderful.
The Beatles would never have 'happened' were it not for playing 4-6 hour sets in Hamburg. They learned so many songs that were popular and got people dancing, that it became almost second nature for them to come up with something catchy. You can't teach that. Great interview Josh. (You're no bloody slouch yourself mate. Great player). 👍👏
Saw Scott in a small club in Santa Barbara around mid 90's. He had a custom Ibanez that he sat on the floor and restrung while one our local Bass players went and got his rig to lend to Scott's bass man. Loved the rough intimacy of it. Ended up a great gig.
Just finding this...So much depth of thought and insight here, as well as wonderful humor...Totally enjoyable and inspiring, thank you! Scott's podcast with Bruce Forman(guitarwank) is quite a ride, too!
Josh Thanks!!! Your awesome interview with Scott Henderson. His is a history of Brilliant Jazz fusion guitar virtuoso. I always loved his very unique stile. Your interview will inspire every guitar players. I was one of the lucky one to see first Scott Henderson with Jean-Luc Ponty early 80`s and after with Joe Zawinul Syndicate 1988 in Edmonton Jazz Festival. Amazing guitar virtuoso!! Thanks again to take on a music history Journey with Scott Henderson!!
I met Scott in NJ in the late 80s, he was a genuinely nice guy, saw him with weather report in the city many times, was awesome, he went to a local club just to play sitting on the dock of the bay just for me
Great Interview with Scott Henderson now I have something new to listen too. Thx for at least me turning me on to Scott Henderson. Really dig the channel. You should have way more followers. People don’t know what their missing. #Bluesforever
Great Channel Josh! Glad to suscribe. I was fortunate to play and learn from Scott at MI back around 2008. Love his down to earth and inspiring method of teaching.
Great Interview. I wish Scott makes his next album with keyboards. It's great listen the guitar lines moving through the keyboards chords like tribal tech years.
So glad to hear Scott mention Ted Greene and acknowledge his mindset, too many of these guys these days overlook Ted Greene and the notion of playing guitar for the sake of playing guitar for yourself and no other reason. Screw fame and making videos, playing guitar is so rewarding on its own.
I think this may be my favorite guest so far. So cool to get to know Scott more. Such a cool and wise dude. Gotta start digging deeper into his catalog now
Thank you so much Josh for this interview. I really love your lengauge and playing. As well as you, Scott henderson has been a huge inspiration for my dream to play jazz. I am listening right now Joe Diorio and i took note of many bands, and names! Best wishes from Ushuaia, Argentina.
What a great interview. I remember seeing an early Tribal Tech gig at a small club in Austin called the Back Room. It was a headbanger venue ... hard rock cover bands and pool tables. We called it "the Black Room". And l remember us thinking it was such a mismatch for their music. A few of us knew of Scott from playing with Chick ... at least that was my frame of reference. And if there were ten people there actually listening to the music, l'd be surprised. I was so blown away by what l was hearing. And it was like seeing a unicorn and thinking, "Oh my god! Is anyone else seeing this"?
Truth @38.00 and the Whole Lot of (plus others)solo perfect tone and inflection without guitar in frame was epic Scott., wow what a treat. Thanks Josh!
What a great interview ! When Scott talks ,I just stop whatever I'm doing and listen.Probably one of the best Scott's interviews I've ever seen ! Thanks Josh ! You're an amazing player.
Scott is the loveliest guy ever. Met him a couple of times after his gigs here in Berlin and also once when he did a masterclass in my music college. The guy is a treasure of a person, and one incredible musician. Incredible. Makes the world and the art world a way better place. Love his playing to death. Probably one of my most obsessively- transcribed artists ever.
I love Scott man. Watching him at the Spud is spiritual......then the second set gets there and he gets drunk and starts talking a lot to the crowd and it's even better bc he's hilarious haha
Great interview. Just love musicians' stories. Could watch stuff like this all night. No big egos here although both of you are entitled to have them. I liked Scott's point about making mistakes funny although many people in the audience would not even spot them so don't beat yourself up. You can only try to perform to the best of your ability and if it doesn't always come off then that's life.
I was a student at MI when Scott was there (Robben Ford was a counselor). We knew watching him jam back then that he was extraordinary. My favorite non-musical memory that year was Scott bringing his dog to school. He would lay down and go to sleep until it was time to move on to the next class.
was there ever a time when Scott and Robben jammed? man i'd love to be there if that happened
@@Xtianisms It's been so long, I don't remember specifically but I'm sure they did (this was back in '81-'82). As I recall, Scott was the go-to student to jam with a visiting musician after Q&A's. Dog party!
Scott henderson is a genius

The dog? Or Scott?
Tore Down House for me is an absolute classic . Great great player and clearly a nice guy !
Absolutely. Talk about blistering! I love those sneaky Mahavishnu-esque chords Scott weaves into the title track.
@@ganazby the whole song is like “ here’s what you can do with a Strat -style guitar “ Love it
Yes the dance hehe
Gotta love Scott❤️ He taught at MI in the 80’s.... he told me in a one on one lesson ”you will never be able to play jazz” 30 years later I can say he was right even though I’ve had a great career in music. Well I hope you are rocking hard if jazz is not your forte.
I have seen pretty much every Scott Henderson interview there is and this is probably the best one. Thanks so much!
My face muscles are hurting because I had such a huge grin on my face from hearing what Scott had to say.
Agreed 100%
What a talent! Had the pleasure of seeing SH with Jeff Berlin in a tiny club with a criminally small audience. They didn’t care and it was a night of amazing music! Scott is one of the best. The unbridled joy on Scott's fave while he plays the solo to Whole Lotta Love is incredible!!!
Scott! Anyone that loves your music hears your distinctive style. You have a unique sound on the guitar and a definite legend! Thanks for the great playing.
Love both of these guys and their music. Thanks Josh!

Can you please do one with Derek Trucks? That would be INSANE!
It’s a real pleasure listening to two working artists. Kind regards from London

Cool interview Josh. As a professional guitarist myself, you ask great questions..And since you have killer guests, you get amazing insights told.

I’m really impressed with the quality of this interview. Thanks for making it happen. I needed to hear so much of what you both said here.

I really appreciate the magnificent gift to humanity called Scott Henderson. Thank you Scott!!
Man, a wealth of insight and reference material and I'm only half way through the interview!
As a guitar player, I can relate to the frustrations discussed. Great interview, thanks Josh.

Yea but those sounds were so dated to the 80’s. But they are great tunes.

Excellent conversation from some great guys, thanks Josh. Unreal players with some real tips and wisdom. Cheers!
Saw Scott Henderson play at Reggies in Chicago.before the pandemic. It was one of the best live performances I have ever seen in my entire life.
Awesome interview! 🙌🎶💙
Such a fabulously gifted musician and at the same time humble human. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights.

Scott is so amazing on the guitar, but he is also a very cool guy with unique thoughts on many aspects of life. Great interview!
My friend Scott Lerner introduced me to Scott Henderson at NAMM about 15 years ago and Josh Smith was there as well.
Scott is the loveliest guy ever. Met him a couple of times after his gigs here in Berlin and also once when he did a masterclass in my music college. The guy is a treasure of a person, and one incredible musician. Incredible. Makes the world and the art world a way better place. Love his playing to death. Thanks Josh! Thanks Scott!
Great interview👏
one of the best of the so called shred generation. So unique, massive talent. Love the story where he talks abt soloing for an hr playing "cocaine".
Really really great interview....Well done
Such a great interview and pure gold insights!
So many great stories and truisms in this. Great to hear a pro describe things I’ve felt as an amateur. Thx guys!
