    Thanks to Scott for taking the time to explain so much. I've followed his career not only as a guitarist but as a music fan. Scott has developed his own way of playing. That, combined with the kind of tone he produces, creates a kind of vocal effect on the guitar, a kind of smokey alto. I just love his playing and his musical sense. He is unique, idiosyncratic, and one-of-a-kind when it comes to playing guitar. I've watched him play many times at the Baked Potato, which is one of the best reasons for living in Los Angeles.

    • @garyhambleton2374
      @garyhambleton2374 5 місяців тому

      Yes, the Baked Potato -- saw Larry Carlton there many times, and of course, Scott. Also saw Scott several times at Donte's in North Hollywood. Still have a live cassette recording of 'The Creeping Terror' which was killer even back then. I think Scott is the pre-eminent jazz/rock/blues guitarist of our times. The Tribal Tech albums are mind-boggling in their complexity yet still being accessible.

    This was one of the most informative interviews ever. Scott is an amazing player and a very generous guy. I really like his hobby of reverse engineering his favorite players guitar sounds. This story from engineer Mike Ross, about first encountering Hendrix in the studio, gives the mic and placement.
    Ross recalled the impact of Hendrix's Marshall stacks: "It was so loud you couldn't stand in the studio ... I'd never heard anything like it in my life."[29] When Ross asked Hendrix where he would like the microphone placed Hendrix replied: "Oh, man, just put a mic about twelve feet away on the other side of the studio. It'll sound great."[29] Ross agreed, and with a Neumann U87 tube mic he recorded Hendrix's guitar playing in a large room that, according to Ross, "was absolutely vital to the uniquely powerful Experience sound."
    Pete, thanks so much, you all knocked it out of the park!

    I really like the approach Scott has. He's seamlessly integrated his whammy bar and his left hand work into a very vocal realm. He's America's Jeff Beck in my opinion, taking American forms of jazz and blues into new territory.The way he uses subtlety with pickup tones and blurring left and right hand vibrato affords him a slight of hand to keep things unpredictable, but always melodic.

    Daaaaaaaaamn, man... y'all knocked it out of the park and out of the bloody parking lot with that episode!!!
    I cannot thank you enough for doing this interview. Heard Henderson in the early 90's and was completely floored that he could embody the best of the blues-rock intensity with the rich, harmonic/chordal brilliance and dynamic nuances of jazz. What a fascinating man.
    You'll have to visit him again in a year as a follow up!

    Scott came to GIT when I was there in the late 80s. It tripped me out to see him unload 2 huge racks from a tiny beat up hatchback. Loved when he'd play there cuz he was free to go way out there. The sounds were otherworldly. My jaw dropped when I saw his rig in this episode.

    Love Scott. Been a fan since Tribal Tech and Players. Probably seen more of his shows than anyone else and he's so approachable. Pulls up to the gig with the band, (in an Econoline rental, see Tribal Tech's Econoline) unloads, sets up and rips off a show. Sits and has a beer with you. His sound has become decidedly more "him" since Dog Party and studio sessions like Vital Tech Tones in the '90s. Funny, humble guy. Great show from you guys Pete and Tim!

    my life."[29]
    When Ross asked Hendrix where he would like the microphone placed

    other side of the studio. It'll sound great."[29]
    Ross agreed, and with a Neumann U87 tube mic he recorded Hendrix's

    His perspective on balancing strat pickups is very interesting. I've always had a hotter bridge pickup in an effort to try and keep it from getting overpowered by the neck pickup. But I think his use of the tone control to tame the highs while keeping a high output from a bridge pickup set close to the strings is very interesting. Worth looking into...

    I have been so taken throughout this whole video by how much Scott's tone reminds me of Jimmy Herring, and vice versa. Wondering if you could get Jimmy to do an interview and info. exchange with you guys; both are on my favorites list! Great series of videos. Kudos to Tim and Pete!
