I met Julian Lage in 2016 at the carolina performing arts hall with fred hersch. Show was amazing, both were VERY cool and very kind to everyone, and took a lot of time to encore, and hang around after the show. Much cool indeed.
Glad to hear this conversation. I met Julian in Atlanta a few years ago while on tour promoting Modern Lore. I got to the venue early and they were only taking cash. On my way to the ATM I run into him as he was on his way to a coffee shop. I told him I was exited about the show and he invited me to come sit with the trio at the coffee place. All of them quite loving and genuine!
Never heard of Julian Lage until this video. His outlook is super interesting and I could watch a conversation like this for hours. Immediately looked up some videos after and I’m in awe. And the rabbit hole begins....
Sooo many rabbit holes to disappear down! Here are some of my fave Julian Lage listens to give a sense of his depth and breadth: "I'll be seeing you" (Live in Los Angeles) "Live on Flathead Lake" - Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge "Margaret Glaspy and Julian Lage perform “Best Behavior” " SuproUSA upload (Margaret is Julian's girlfriend) Collings Booth NAMM 2019" (Nick Granville's upload) "Gary Burton: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" "'Julian Lage Trio at Paste Studio NYC live at the Manhattan Centre" "Julian Lage Workshop (Japanese Subtitles)"
Josh I have been watching Flat V for a while now and I have to say you have the BEST guests. Bruce Forman, Adam Rodgers and now Julian Lage not to mention so many others. I am a fan of yours and have seen you live at Harvelles and the Baked Potato. You ask great questions and have a really good authentic easy going approach. Thank you for Flat V!
Great to see you bring in Julian for this, in addition to his virtuosity he’s such a thoughtful humble human - his answers to your questions about developing a voice around the 53 minute mark are inspirational and appropriate for just about any healthy creative progress, guitar and beyond. Great stuff, thanks Josh
Julian is honestly one of the nicest dudes around, let alone truly remarkable musical voice. Met him once at a Bill Frisell concert and he was so cool and gracious
Well that was just a wonderful interview with Julian. I am quite the opposite of a jazz guitar player. But people who listen to me play and know Julian Lage say hello I can see you've been listening to Julian lately. Such is the influence of his meter and pacing on me. Thanks so much for this interview. I absolutely adore his signature model. I think it's quite possibly the perfect electric guitar.
Josh: Thanks so much for this interview. It is so good. I had the privilege of being at a guitar camp where Julian gave some master classes and frankly, I am in love with him, his approach to life and music. This interview just confirmed for me how gently profound he is about what he does. I need to look up your work now. Thought your interview was insightful and revealing.
Great stuff Josh....Julian is such a genuine and thoughtful soul besides being one of the most brilliant musicians out there. I loved what Julian shared at 47:35.. I have struggled with this thinking that this way was not as valid musically.....it was so validating to hear a musician/guitarist of Julian's incredible stature share that this approach is valid for him...thank you!!!!!
You’re in for a treat. Also very much worth looking up when he sat in with the Time Jumpers (mindblowing) and my own profile has a clip of Ryland from the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho (London).
I have been a fan and follower of Julian for a few decades now. It's always such a thrill to watch how relaxed and easy he plays his guitar.Such a pleasure always. Thank you both for sharing this with us.Best wishes for 2022 and beyond.
A master being interviewed by another master creates conversation that covers topics you really never hear from any other interview. This was truly insightful and inspiring. Great questions, great answers and great people. Thanks to you both 🙏
This was a fantastic interview. Julian is my favorite modern player (also a favorite person). He possesses poise, wisdom, humility and musicality way beyond his years. I only wish I had this kind of knowledge when I was his his age. He is the future of guitar (and I think music).
Shout out to Julian Lage for remembering all the cats, not even super famous that helped him out and put him on, kept on helping that push that comes from positive reinforcement. Really speaks for him as a being a great guy overall. Awesome interview and questions Josh.
Phenomenal as ever Josh - you’re a great host! Thank you for asking such great questions, and for setting up sessions with legends like this. And thank you Julian Lage 😀
Julian Lage is such a wonderful person. His playing, interpretation, humbleness, have inspired many musicians out there. Thanks for this precious interview Josh.
Late to the party on this one, but this is by far the best interview of any musician I’ve ever listened to. Notice how Julian thinkspeaks how he plays. And Josh I love your thoughtful exploration and questioning. Superb.
I am friends with another great guitarist who Julian Lage reminds me of in so many respects. That is Peter Sprague from San Diego, CA. They both have a similar personality and demeanor, as well as playing skills. Peter would also be a great guest for you to interview, Josh. Thanks for these wonderful interviews.
I thought the same thing about he and Peter Sprague. If I turn the video off sometimes I think I am hearing Sprague speak. Both are virtuosic but I do find quite a bit of distinction in playing styles. Primarily in that Lage transcends genre classification at times whereas Sprague lands squarely in the Jazz tradition and vocabulary. The age differentiation probably contributes to that.
What a great interview! It could have lasted 5 more hours and I would have followed it without skipping a beat. Thank you Josh! Greetings from Brno (Czech Republic).
Cool I’m looking forward to watching this one. I’m from Australia but I happened to be in New York a few years back when Julian was playing at the blue note. Was an awesome night, met him after.
I love these interviews Josh, and of course Julian Lage does not disappoint!!! Such a sensitive and gifted and articulate artist!!! I love hearing you trade your insights and compare your paths with him! On a separate topic, I would love to hear you interview Duke Robillard whose music I've loved for decades! Thank you for your channel and your dedication to spreading the love of music!
Thank you so much Josh for this amazing interview! I love Julian's attitude to the guitar - not only his playing but his philosophy about practice, learning, and even about playing what you "hear". It was so nice to hear your back and forth with him, it really felt like just an awesome chat between old friends.
I saw Julian a few times, first when he was like 15 playing with Gary Burton. I was 16 and it blew my mind that some kid my age (or in this case, a whole band of kids) was playing like that. It's been a pure joy watching him develop as a musician.
Was just saying to my partner yesterday ‘I wish there was more discussion of and acknowledgment of.... in music’ This interview is all the things I was talking about and wanting to hear 🙏🙏 Thanks so much 🙏🙏
Listened to this while I should have been sleeping for work tomorrow... I’ll spend all day thinking about Julian’s incredibly thoughtful responses. I really appreciate the creative questions that you asked!! You guys said a lot of things that I think will stick with me for a long time. Subbed for sure
Aside from being a monster player Josh, you are an amazing interviewer! Great interesting questions and its all very natural and conversational. Looking forward to more of these along with your other vids .
Huge fan of Julian, a real genius of the guitar. I always think ” if only i can see live Hendrix, srv, the stones in the 70’S...’” , i wasn’t born in the good aera.... When i saw 3 times Julian lage live in Paris last years i feel ” woah, this guy is the best , i have seen a legend at young age ” I wish yo can make another video with him and play together this time
These interviews are a great series Josh. You have a unique angle and perspective that makes you ask questions of these virtuosos others don’t...it’s a kinship of like minds....but different paths. I think you should mine this vein on your channel!
These are so great! I can intimately relate to not being able to find other players who were into what I was doing and studying. In the early ‘90s, I was so much more into BB King, Clapton, etc. than grunge (which I liked, but didn’t necessarily connect with musically). Much like your experience, it was such a confirming and exciting life event to be recognized by the older, much better players I finally got around! Here I am 30 yrs later and still have a guitar in my hand nearly every day.
Julian's comments about the "voice in your head" as a practicing musician are so profound. It really removes the joy from playing music and it is fascinating that such an accomplished player would also experience this.
I love Julian's playing. And he's a great guy. But my most selfish request always comes to mind when I see and hear him... I really wish I could see more of him with an archtop playing standards. It's the best musical experience of my life, hearing him play and improvise in that style. Proven simply by the legend of the video of him and Armand Hirsch playing Just Friends at a party or wherever it was. The video was taken down, and me and tons of other people were hunting for it and wanted to listen to it over and over again.
Man i've been watching this fantastic thing while working on changes with my guitalele under the blankets and i actually figured out some great shit! what a night thanks!
Jimmy Bruno loves Bonnie Raitt too..Jimmy and Julian are like polar opposites in their approach to jazz guitar and in their personalities but the fact they share a love for Bonnie is fascinating I think.
In 2012 I saw a Jim Hall performance at the NY Blue Note. He was accompanied by the young Julian Lage, presented to the audience as the best guitarist in the world. It's the simple truth! Jim Hall was absolutly wrigth !
Only a guitar player could think of and ask these kind of questions. Lucky for us it's a very curios guitar player asking a very reflective guitar player. I enjoyed this more than some good movies.
Julian’s response to Josh’s question about voice made me yell and raise my arms with joy. The idea that guitarists or any musician for that matter have a singular identity to fill in their entire lifetimes is simultaneously romantic and reductive. It’s also, in my experience, false. I am honestly so relieved to finally hear it
Julian Lage comes across as such a kind, gentle guy. Very humble and not even a hint of an ego! brilliant musician.
I met Julian Lage in 2016 at the carolina performing arts hall with fred hersch. Show was amazing, both were VERY cool and very kind to everyone, and took a lot of time to encore, and hang around after the show. Much cool indeed.
Lots of jazz guys come across this way. Is it jazz???
Glad to hear this conversation. I met Julian in Atlanta a few years ago while on tour promoting Modern Lore. I got to the venue early and they were only taking cash. On my way to the ATM I run into him as he was on his way to a coffee shop. I told him I was exited about the show and he invited me to come sit with the trio at the coffee place. All of them quite loving and genuine!
Hands down, the absolute best interview I’ve ever seen on YT.
Thanks so much!
Agreed!
I just can’t get enough of Julian Lage. Absolutely wonderful.
Never heard of Julian Lage until this video. His outlook is super interesting and I could watch a conversation like this for hours. Immediately looked up some videos after and I’m in awe. And the rabbit hole begins....

Enjoy my friend
wow Julian Lage interviewed by Josh Smith is this heaven already? Or just early Christmas :)
Julian is the type of master that inspires rather than makes you feel like quitting your instrument.
That’s what it’s all about
Thank you thank you!!! It always makes me sad inside (even when they're joking) about giving up their instruments.
wwait what?? Both of my favourites guitar players together?? Never clicked so fast
My favorite thing said here is, "No matter what it garners it deserves the attention" what a good nugget!
OMG! Two of my favorite guitar players! I’m blown away....
Great to see you bring in Julian for this, in addition to his virtuosity he’s such a thoughtful humble human - his answers to your questions about developing a voice around the 53 minute mark are inspirational and appropriate for just about any healthy creative progress, guitar and beyond. I did a Jazz camp and he was one of the instructors he is an excellent human being and teacher.
As a parent who is just beginning to teach an eager 5 year old guitar, this interview is so immensely helpful. Thanks so much for hosting this.
Very welcome!
Lucky now 8 year old. Wish I'd had you as a parent. Good on you!!!
These two guys are just wunderbar!
So nice of Julian to sit down and speak so extensively, thanks for putting this together for us Josh
Two of my absolute favorites. I saw Julian play with Bruce Forman at the Healdsburg guitar festival a million years ago.
Thanks Josh and Julian for a great conversation!

Love Julian Lange , gentle soul , monstruous guitar player... ..Thx .. I m asking again for an interview with mr. Jack Pearson ..Cheers !!

This is the first I have heard of Julian Lage. Cool to discover new players to listen to.
watch "Nocturne" live in LA - changed my guitar landscape in one listen
You’re in for a treat.
Also very much worth looking up when he sat in with the Time Jumpers (mindblowing) and my own profile has a clip of Ryland from the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho (London).

One of the greatest and most original guitarists of this generation.
Outstanding insight to how this genius creates!
I utterly love that Josh has done these timeless and special interviews for us to appreciate going forward into the future. Thank you Josh.
Great to hear John Martin get a shout out. Very underrated player. Solid Air is a must have and probably the place to start.
Shout out to Julian Lage for remembering all the cats, not even super famous that helped him out and put him on, kept on helping that push that comes from positive reinforcement. Really speaks for him as a being a great guy overall. Awesome interview and questions Josh.
Awesome. Lage is the most talented player on the planet. This is the best!
a truly uplifting and inspiring interview...Thank You
So good Josh! Thanks!!
Thanks my friend!!!!
Phenomenal as ever Josh - you’re a great host! Thank you for asking such great questions, and for setting up sessions with legends like this. And thank you Julian Lage 😀
My two new favorite players in one click... this is amazing!! Thanks guys
Superb.
Lage is, to me one of the very best improvisers alive today......If you get a chance go see him, he is brilliant in any setting.
No freaking way! Josh Smith and Julian Lage together is something I never imagined would happen. Two of my favorite modern guitarists!

Thank you so much for this interview Josh. Julian Lage is such a brilliant artist.
Cool I’m looking forward to watching this one. I’m from Australia but I happened to be in New York a few years back when Julian was playing at the blue note. Was an awesome night, met him after.
Beautiful!
Great interview! Thanks for sharing this.
I saw him live two years ago, hands down the best concert i've been to!
This was an amazing discussion between two great players. So much to unpack here. Thank you
Josh, Julian, Mark Lettieri, Robben Ford, John Mayer, my fav contemporary players. So much to learn from those guys man..
Josh, thanks for introducing us to all these great players. I'm going to check out Julian's music.
Please do!
great interview - thoughtful questions, thank you!!
I saw or read somewhere that Pat Metheny writes detailed notes on every show he has ever played......the way he expressed it just blew my mind.
What a great conversation, thank you for sharing this!

Thank you Josh! this was phenomenal. You asked all the questions I've been wanting to hear Julian talk about. Thanks again.
Julian is one of my heroes, thanks so much Josh!!
Julian hails from Sonoma County, a wonderful place to grow up. A lot of musicians gravitate there.
This is pure guitar therapy! Thanks for this Josh & Julian, great chat
Wow you got Julian Lage!! Incredible player
Aside from being a monster player Josh, you are an amazing interviewer! Great interesting questions and its all very natural and conversational. Looking forward to more of these along with your other vids .
GREAT INTERVIEW!
This was a super inspiring conversation, thanks for this!
Wow!!! Unexpected guest! Julian is one of the best jazz guitarist.
Nice interview. Julian is amazing.
Every interview has been GREAT, but this one might just be my favorite!🍻
Great Interview Josh! I've been a Julian fan since the first time I heard him. He, just as yourself is a great talent! Thanks!
Two of my fav guitarist. 😭😭
Thank you so much!
Two human beings who actually think.!!!

I dont konw if i can love Julian Lage more ...nice talk Josh and Julian
Cool , thanks for the video !
Lovely dude, and really killer player
Outstanding
Cheers Josh and Julian, inspiring informative and heart warming chat, great stuff. :)
Fabulous - he's much like his playing - very curious, inspired, euphoric.
Julian's comments about the "voice in your head" as a practicing musician are so profound. It really removes the joy from playing music and it is fascinating that such an accomplished player would also experience this.
two legends!

@@robertklokk Ah, good news all around. It’s a great video!!
Julian and Nels Cline signed my guitar after a gig when they were performing as a duo. Both of them are super nice guys.
Amazing interview
