Depends on what you mean by deserve. I would argue someone who smokes all their life and lives an unhealthy lifestyle "deserves" it more than someone who leads a healthy life style. I'm so sorry about your mom. Being a caregiver is honestly one of the hardest thing that can be asked of another human being. All you can do is your best, and all you can do is keep her as comfortable as possible. And it's enough. Just remember you're doing everything you can, and it's enough, don't ever think it isn't.

Helping them to keep their dignity to the end was the best way for me to show them the love and respect I had for them for giving me the best of what they had for me my whole life.

@@invisiblewombat123 Can relate to this. I moved out of state in 2017. When I left, my PawPaw (Who played the father figure role for most of my life) was old but in great health. He was the strongest, most stubborn man I knew. Still rode his motorcycle daily up until the time I moved. Heck at one point the man was riding with a cast on his leg after breaking his foot on a ride! I watched him move an entire household with his motorcycle and a camping trailer in tow. The man was a legend. I was so thankful I took a week off and went riding with him on our harleys before I moved because 5 months later he was diagnosed with Cancer and within 2 months it took him. I was able to fly back for 2 days to see him in the Hospital. The day after I got back for telling him goodbye and trying to make peace with the situation he had left this world for the Eternal one. Not a day goes by that I don't dwell in regret on making the decision to move out of state when I did. I lost
      so much time with him.
It never gets better, just easier, with time. Just be thankful they aren't suffering any longer in this cruel twisted world we live in.

I know exactly what this is like. Grew up poor. Even in emergencies my parents wouldn't go to the hospital if they could help it at all because they didn't have insurance. Mother was an alcoholic and abused prescription meds (not saying Asmon's mom did this). She overdosed several times and nearly died in my arms one time. Those were the darkest times in my life, and I think it's worse when you are poor because all you have is family and you are on the brink of losing the last thing you have. @@pulseofme6884 that's completely different - you take care of baby while watching it grow, become better, grow into an adult. It's one of the greatest things one can do in life. Taking care of an ageing parent is the opposite of that - no matter what you do, how hard you try, how much you sacrifice - and it often takes a TON of sacrifice - , they will progressively get worse until they die. There're only few things more depressing.

As someone who took care of her disabled grandmother that raised her from the age of 6 til 18 when I moved out (due to an automobile accident), I will say that I understand where you are coming from. It isn't easy and from here on out, it won't really get easier. Just remember to take care of yourself as well as you and your mom get adjusted to the new lifestyle that the health conditions have brought on. Don't forget to take time to spend with each other. Streams can wait. The days that you need your 'out', your stream audience will be there. We'll be there. I hope you are able to find an in-home nurse to help with the care that your mom needs so you can take some breaks and get rest some nights. @@RealNotallGaming Covid is way scarier than pneumonia or cancer, if you knew people who had cancer you would know that. People keep refusing to vaccinate and take up all the beds in hospitals. I personally know a guy who died 2 weeks ago because all the hospitals were full here due to covid. People who have cancer also cant afford to get sick of covid too, their immune systems are so weak due to different treatments they are receiving + their illness is taking toll on it too, so basically if you have any type of cancer or serious autoimmune disease and you get covid, you are screwed.

Thankfully you're able to support her (emotionally AND financially) during this time, so that IS a big help bud. It has always been pretty obvious you care a great deal about her so I'm sure whatever you're doing is your best. All you can do is try to help her seek actual medical attention, and help her out during the hard times. Love you Asmon, love your mom, and hope she gets better soon!

my dad passed away this year, his choice. he had been diagnosed with copd some years ago after almost losing him to a case of double pneumonia. they basically told him his lungs were toast and the best he could do is stop smoking to prevent further damage. my dad couldn't stop smoking. after a couple years and another couple trips to the hospital they gave him an oxygen machine. he was at stage 4 copd. 6 years i stopped by every weekend to do errands and keep his house clean. he lost a tremendous amount of weight and despite barely being able to walk and having difficulties breathing, he kept smoking. trying to get him to stop would make him depressed, combative, lethargic things that would seemingly make things worse. eventually living a daily hell of not being able to breath and being able to do anything finally took it's toll. he got sick for the last right after new years. and like you he hated going to the hospital. and i remember the day they were coming to get him he kept saying before they come he just wanted to spend more time with me, it wasn't until the ambulance was coming that i realized he was going to make this his last hospital visit. i was lucky enough to be able to hold his hand when he exited stage left. i guess some advice is don't beat yourself up for them not being able to change or looking like your enabling their behavior at this point, you and i know it's not that simple. sit and think about stuff you would like your mom to know, or to experience, or to show, that your not going to sit later and regret not doing, might be as simple as wanting to show off your cooking skills or to how much you appreciated certain points in time. and lastly, i'm not going to sugar coat it, things are not going to get any better and they will only get worse. unfortunately your going to have to do your best to soldier on in that situation, because time is limited, and even those things that she has you do that annoy you or make you angry, your going to be kicking yourself later wishing they could do it one more time. make best of the time you have, we only get one shot at this.

Refuses to quit, body deteriorating, can’t golf anymore, which makes him even more jaded and unhappy, leaving him with his only two pleasures: smoking and drinking. I feel guilty in a way, for spending nights by the fire, talking and drinking whisky, as if I were encouraging him. We’ve exchanged more words in the last 18 months than in the last 32 years of my life. But I don’t think anything is ever going to change him, and he’s going to destroy himself with or without me. I know I will be grateful that I spent this time with him when he’s gone.

Exactly! I am all my father has left now. Everyone else is gone. I lost my mother a few months ago. She passed away in a nursing home in Florida! She had Parkinson's really bad, and I was told she was completely out of her mind in the end! To make it worse, I couldn't be there because of the coof! I know all too well how Zack feels, I have been there, more than once! My aunt died when Texas froze, my husband passed away a few years ago, he had been really sick for a while, and one night, when I came home from work, I found him gone! I was NOT in a good place after that, but, I was lucky enough to have had help with that! I don't mean to depress anybody, but, a few months ago, the biological mother of my step-kids, passed away, and I am the only mother they have left now too! Before my husband passed, one of my closest BFF's from work died in a house fire, saving someone else. Me, and a couple of others that were the closest to her, were trying to get a little bit of money put together, to help with expenses. I was supposed to go to her funeral, then, my husband died. So, yeah, it has been rough as f%#@ for me as well these past few years, the last two especially! When I heard what was happening to Zack, and his family, I had to share some of what had happened to me as of late. Maybe it will help someone else? Oh, to make things even more f-ed up, before my husband passed, our place where we live almost burnt down! I really hope Zack's mom gets better soon, we will ALWAYS be there for Zack, like he is for us! Just take care of yourself and your mom, family always comes first! We all love and care about you! Sorry if I bummed some people out, I just had to share some of my story. YOU GOT THIS ZACK!

As someone who just recently lost his mother a few months ago, I can relate. This is probably something you don't want to think about, but you should have that conversation with your mom about her wishes should the worst happen. It will makes things easier if you already know what she wants if she were incapacitated or unlikely to recover, etc. Basically a medical directive that allows you to make decisions for her if she can't and what her wishes are in certain medical situations. These kind of things can happen quite suddenly. Three weeks before my mom died, I had talked with her doctors who told me that she was actually doing OK as her test numbers showed she was doing better now than 6-9 months previously. Three weeks later she was in the hospital and in just a few days later was in hospice and passed away. Knowing her wishes well before hand made decisions a lot easier to make with no delay or doubt.
Taking care of a sick parent is not easy. They may reach a point in which you cannot really take care of them anymore. All you can do is your best and make decisions that are best for their health even if it's not to their liking. At the same time, there is only so much you can do if your parent is dead set against it like staying in hospital. Some parents are rather stubborn and even if you were a doctor, they would just do what they want regardless of professional medical advice. My mom also left the hospital on a few occasions despite advice from the doctors that it would not be a good idea. She didn't care. She just wanted out of there (this was long before COVID). On one hand, you're the son so you're responsible for taking care of your mom. However on the other hand, you're just the son, the kid (in her eyes). She will always outrank you and not necessarily listen to you. Just do what you can.

Monday at 3am my mother wakes me and my brother up in tears, we went to the hospital to see him one last time. He already passed away before we got there.

Hey Zach. I'm sorry to hear that your mom isn't doing well. And I have an understanding of what you're going through. For the past couple years I've been helping my Mom take care of my Dad who is in hospice. It's not easy. It's stressful, it's emotionally difficult to deal with. It's very hard to watch your parents grow old, and feeble, and sometimes lose their minds and awareness. It's very hard to want to do so much for them, and be completely inadequate for what you want to do. DO find a nurse to come around a couple times a week to check up and help out. That does help to relieve the stress for a little while. You'll have tough days, you'll have okay days, and everything in between, but all we can do is take life one day at a time.
As an ending note, in July I cold-turkey quit sodas. It was hard, but not as hard as I thought.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Keep on being a good, loving son. That is ultimately more important than streaming, than the audience, etc, and I'm sure you know that.
    Cheers from Colorado,
    ~SS

Lost my dad in my early 20s to a stroke, although it took half a year after the episode for him to pass. It sucks dude, no way around it. Just stay at her side, do what you can to not have her feeling alone, reinforce to her that she's got someone who loves the shit outta her unconditionally. Hire a nurse if she's down so that you don't get caretaker's fatigue (real thing) but what's most important is her comfort. Stay strong Zack and don't be afraid to leave the streaming behind for a while. I'd give a year of my life just to have a five minute conversation with my dad again. When they're gone, they're gone.

Yeah, hire someone like nurse could be very helpfull - even when you want to fully commit to supporting someone by yourself... More people is almost everytime is better - then you could give only your positive energy to someone that you cared, you don't get so fatigued by that and professional nurse could help because, well, its their job and they probably have some expiriense with this.
So, again, even when you absolutly love someone - you should take rests yourself. Because one thing, that I think you problem doesn't want to do - is to make your parents and loved ones worried about your own well being, especially because they, well, could think that this is their fault... So stay strong, stay positive, ask for help if its needed. Wish everyone a good luck!

Then another heart attack put an end to his life. You took her to the place where she could get the best possible care you could give her. Take the time you need, take the moments left to spend with your dear mom, and love yourself for being a caring and wonderful son. Please seek out a MH counselor to help you make the hard decisions you may be soon facing. Have a game plan for the worst days, it will help you heal when the good days are there. *Super hugs*

Good tip on finding a mental health counselor. If anyone reading this has the money, I especially recommend looking for licensed therapists with a Master’s or PhD degree in psychology, or an MD in psychiatry (many psychiatrists also offer counseling). Especially those that use CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). I find that they tend to use the most evidence-based practices and are typically the most professional (will respect your boundaries, won’t push a specific religion on to you, etc.). Also, if you don’t click with your therapist for whatever reason, feel free to find a new one. It’s important to take care of our mental health-it’s like getting a doctor’s checkup and regular appointments, but for the brain.

Dude im sorry to hear this news, I really am. Sitting here tearing up a little, while recognizing what you and your family are going through, she is your mom after all. As so am i . My sis has been dealing with stage 4 colon cancer and has been battling this since as of 2019 in November. Seeing what she goes through with her chemo treatments does suck royally and the toll it take out on her and the family. But the silver lining all we can do for now is just pray for them. Reguardlessly if you are a relgious person or not. It is all that we can do to show our support and be there for them, as a strength and a guidling light for them to hopefully make it out of this somehow. Community is here for you.

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 congestive heart failure last week, I feel you on the stress. I felt like the worst son almost feeling bad that he was coming home from the hospital. Its not that I didn't want him home, its more so I didn't know what to do, when they're at the hospital as you said they're under the best treatment and in the best place for when something goes wrong.
Now im his caregiver, low sodium diets, managing medications, to and from doctor visits, managing liquid intakes and exercise amounts. Its a lot, also they gave him this heart attack life vest. Hearing that beep go off even just because a sensor isn't reading correctly is anxiety inducing.

What you do is not only good enough, it gives people hope and happiness. You deserve the support for being legit.
My mother got on an oxygen machine but I used some of my training to help her. I make a bath of 1 cup of 35% hydrogen peroxide and 2 cups of Epsom salts for oxygenation of tissues and aiding in tissue recovery and relaxation. I had her eat 1 tablespoon of plain kitchen mustard for her lungs because mustard seed is a powerful expectorant (clears the lungs) like mucinex but better, and it's been used as a chest pack for eons for lung disease and other ailments.
Keep going. All you can do is care and help her. Stay strong.

yeah, tell that to a person who has been pretty poor their entire life and try to convince them to act normally when they have expensive caregivers around. it doesn't work that way. i can say from experience, it's very hard to convince older people especially to be okay with things like that. imagine spending your entire life worrying about every single cent and now having a lavish lifestyle just like that. even when they know they can afford it now - it messes up with your brain a lot you'd rather not.

I concur, not knowing how to help a sick/old person can be counterproductive, for example, if you don't help them stand up the correct way you risk hurting them. When I helped my grandma get out of the car while going to the bank an old guy lectured me on why I was doing it wrong and how I could hurt her shoulders, hips, risk a fall etc. There's a lot when it comes to care taking.
