About "static stretching" (prior to athletic activities) decreasing performance or increasing risk of injury, there is not conclusive evidence (NASM), In many cases is more related with the time through which the static stretch is being hold: Under 30 seconds should not provoke any muscle atrophy. Adding that: the combination of static and dynamic stretches seem to be the most optimal warm-up protocol, as it deactivates the tensed muscles; then activates the underactive and the recently stretched (under 30 secs) muscles . Something else which the boxing world has not yet entered into is: plyometrics or "power" protocols before training. The activation of the fast twitch fibers and the increase of explosiveness could lead a boxer to a better performance.
My gaa football coach once told me the your muscles are like bluetac. If you try to stretch them cold they’ll break so you have to warm them up first by doing a jog around the gym or dynamic stretches then after the blood is pumping do your static stretches so your muscles will stretch better after they’re warm just like bluetac
0:20 but i need to eat big food many food to gain my fats and look little fit and bulk, im 13 years old turning 14 in 9 days, i weight 45kg 99 pounds, height 166.7 ft im skinny, i really need big food.
Hey man I've been watching and learning from you for a while now. I'm really having a hard time finding a gym and I'm self taught in boxing just watching videos. It's hard to set goals when I'm just shadow boxing most of the time. Can you recommend some drills or anything so that I can improve in the meantime.
Let me try: what I do is before I start to put something as my focus of the workout. For example the jab. Then in every drill I do I focus on the jab, be it shadow boxing, bagwork or double end ball. Another day I focus on a left pivot or a right pivot. Sure this is not perfect, bur better than running headless into your session. At least for me it feels like it.
I had a friend studying in Physical Education (I can't remember the proper term), and he had told me to never stretch before a workout but to do a warmup. I thought it was wrong, but that's because I didn't know how to warm up properly. Now I know, dynamic stretching
I di all of these already, my goal is to be the best boxer i can be! My traumatic childhood left me with many demons and boxing lyfestyle keeps me away from drugs and alcohol and depression! Thank you mr jefferies!
What about drinking coffee before the workout? I always drink like a litre (add a lot of water to it, slso Bailey's and milk, gets me going) and take my daily dump just before the workout (hence the coffee) and MAYBE a small nibble bit of a banana. After the workout, like a litre at least of water. Never shat my pants, don't run out of juice mid-session, and can do 10 rounds this way, and I'm 45 years old (on the wrong side of 40)...
Hey Tony, I love your videos and I had a question. When you say we shouldn’t work out before working out in a boxing gym. Can we work out like the day before and when you train boxing the next day your body’s sore from working out but does that still make my training in the boxing gym productive?
It really depends on the intensity you putting in. But i think if you sleep 8hours proprely, eat healthy and enough, stretch, you'll be able to train without having troubles w muscle soreness
Muay thaï fighters jog several kilometers before training, i'd have to disagree on the running point because it does bring your cardio up and conditions your legs for fatigue. after that we usually get 5-10 minutes to rest, and we are onto the technical training ! working the technique when you're a bit tired makes you focus more on form than power.
Whats your opinion, is it better to run in the morning and box in the afternoon or vice versa? The first one was my routine but on sparring days i wouldnt run until after sparring depending how hard the sparring was
I mean im not Tony but I’d say run first as it allows more oxygen to the muscles so you might be a little more sore but all the “rust” will be off the joints, I did that as well and as I’m having knee problems at the moment I can’t run as much as usual and definitely noticed a small decrease in my output when boxing simply because it takes longer for everything to get warm
@@BWater-yq3jx I believe Ricky Hatton worked out first and then ran later. A few that I know, nobody famous, have done it as well. Just a random question
@smallcheddar3012 My competition days are done and I know what you mean about the knee pain. Just a random question because everyone has a different view of it
I literally warm up and cool down with the jump rope. No injuries but I might be more experienced than most so may be a reason it doesn't affect my performance negatively.
Thank you so much tony. When i first started watching your guides i improved alot in boxing and now im in a boxing club. I am your australian tasmanian fan 🥊
Is it okay to take creayine before a workout? When should i take it? Also i use protein powder/shake after my workout to avoid gas (mot trying to worry about farting during abs)
This is actual some dope video idea and super interesting topic. Tony can you do a video in the future about how to hydrate/drink WHILE training? As we train and sweat we lose water and electrolytes. I read a study that people who drank small sips while training had something of around 20% better workout thanthose not drinking. What should one drink (other than supplements...)? I heard water with applejuice is better than pure water (1:2 ratio). Electrolytes are important. There was a marathon runner dying because he drank too much plain water and flushing his electrolytes out (water toxification).
Yeah, a lot of boxing gyms really don't know what they're doing. They have you running and working out to failure before you do any "skill" work. That teaches your body to work sloppy. Muscle memory memorizing sloppy work. Best to warm up and then do skill work. Afterwards you can do your fitness training or better yet a whole separate workout for fitness.
I do an aikido class before my boxing training. I'm completely dead by the end of an hour boxing class. But my schedule just doesn't work any other way.
This is super helpful. Just one thing - it seems like a lot of gyms, mine included, have class very late. I don’t get home till 8:30. If I eat after class, my sleep suffers. If I eat before class, my workout suffers. Question is, which is worse and is there any advice on finding a compromise? Thanks!
Apple before me session, I honestly take my pre workout stuff when I wake up to go to the bathroom since I already paid for it and it just makes me want to poop.
I'm a geezer. I don't spar anymore, but I hit the heavy bag. I hit the heavy bag after a kettle bell workout. I do this mostly for health. Should I alter this or are you just talking about serious sparring?
Coach what do you think sleep in regards to boxing? I work overnight 1800 to 0730 and my session is at 12-1300. Sometimes I’m not able to get the right amount of sleep before my session. Maybe none at all.
Bro you've got to get your sleep, I used to be an overnight shift worker too and it takes such a toll on your body, no way you should be going to a boxing class at the expense of getting quality sleep in, it will catch up with you eventually. Find a different class later or earlier in the day that fits your schedule better
@@Autonamatonamaton thanks man. I’m taking that advice. I rather sleep especially being a new Dad it’s definitely been challenging to balance. I found some more gyms that have better schedule.
@@Nolllag nice one brother, at the end of the day nothing's more important than your health and getting quality sleep is part of that, especially as a new father 👍
I eat 2 bananas 1 hour before a workout and am like superman.and I do 3 rounds of 3 minutes skipping and in the 1 minute break I do light shadow boxing just to prepare the musscles
I am pretty confused about the jumprope and shadowboxing comment at the end. Of course we can make a workout with these exercises with high intensity but wouldn't it be better to qualify that they can be used for warming up as well. Utilizing light intensity, these are two of the most common warmups we see in gyms.
Warmup requirements exist on a continuum. If you've been active all day, you could probably go straight into proper shadowboxing and skipping. But if you've just woken up, maybe ease into it a bit. Also, age is a factor. More years, more warmup. I do generally say though, that the best warmup is a light and easy but progressively harder version of what you are warming up for.
Yeah was wondering the same, the boxing classes i started going to recently literally do jump rope followed by shadow boxing as the warm up. I take it light so haven't seen any problems so far. Though they do no stretching whatsoever and no warm down, which i find a bit weird. I seem to be only one following up with some static stretches at the end
I used to train boxing at my home for 2years and ik how to box but yerstaday i had my first spar in which i wasn't able to perform well. I was just standing on a spot and i couldn't see punches coming.
