In this video I go over two different ways to cut to the beat in Final Cut Pro. Being able to edit to music is essential as an editor and being able to cut to the beat of the music in an efficient way is really easy. I also have a few additional tips in this video to help you improve your edits.
Check out my “Learn the Basics of FCPX” course here 👉🏼 skl.sh/3djPAqk
On this channel you’ll find Final Cut Pro tutorials, filmmaking and photography tips and other things like travel vlogs when we Donna and I get the chance to travel, so if you enjoy that sort of thing then please subscribe to the channel.

What genre of music is your favourite to edit to? Let me know in the comments below 😊👇🏼
As always, loving the content! The second edit of the desert video was much more interesting to watch. As far as editing, it depends on the video and the song, but it helps if the track has drums and is in 4/4 time.
You can also take a 3 minute song and shorten it instead of fading out. If you know the chord progression, take the ending and add it to the end of the first verse, for example. The end result: short song with great into and great ending.
Yeah great tips! These are great ways to edit music tracks for editing as well 😄👌🏼
Dude... not exactly what I was looking for but I ended up staying to see what you had to say, and holyshit you had some suuuuper dope info! Especially all the shortcut keys you used and how do edit on your timeline. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks so much! I’m glad you stuck around and found the video helpful. I appreciate you watching! 😄🙏🏼

Really great tips! Thank you so much! Definitely a few gems in here I didn't know about!! I was a browser editor but I think I'll give it a go doing it in the timeline!
It might take some time getting used to switching from the browser to the timeline but I personally find it to be so much faster. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 😊🙌🏼
The Marker for editing to the beat was beyonnnnnd helpful!!! Thank you so much!!

I definitely prefer Trap or Old School Hip Hop. Loving this video, you made it a little different than what it already available on the platform. I found it very useful. Keep it up! I'm riding with you guys!
Yeah hip hop and trap are cool genres to edit to. Awesome! Thanks for the support! 😄🙌🏼
Such a helpful and concise video, thank you!
You’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed it 😄🙏🏼
Awesome tut as always, man. I'm a timeline editor myself. I like being able to have everything in front of me when I get to work. It's about the best workflow for you, tho. Thanks for the tips, man!
Couldn't agree more! I like being able to see ALL my footage when choosing shots. Everyone will have their own unique way of editing 😊 Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching! 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for this video! As a young(er) channel owner, I'm constantly trying to improve my editing. I've been trying to get my edits "just right" with the beats, but have never quite gotten them to where I wanted them to be. This video took care of that instantly. I'm now editing on beat and much, much faster than before. Thank you!!!!
That is so awesome to hear! I’m really glad this video has been helpful to you 😄🙌🏼
This was really insightful!! Thank you for this!!
You are so welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful!
Your videos are breathtaking good! I started editing with Sony Vegas, went then to Premiere and want to change to FCPX so im not a total beginner but this videos are so great, especially because you show workflows and shortcuts, which is the most important thing for me! :) Thumbs up mate
Thanks Jonas! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos 😊🤙🏼 FCPX is really easy to use and get the hang of in my opinion. If you make the switch you won’t be sorry 😄
I learned alot in this video, i found the t shortcut to adjust the clip to the beat between the beat most useful. Help to achieve an enhanced effect.
Glad you enjoyed it Aaron! I use the shortcut T all the time 😄👌🏼
@@Brad_West brad can you help identify what grade this is please not click bait. ua-cam.com/video/8dAqV6pNaaU/v-deo.html
This grade has some high contrast, really bright whites and darker shadows but really bright overall. It’s also pretty saturated overall. If you go in that direction I’m sure you’ll be able to achieve something similar 👍🏼
@@Brad_West ok thank you very much.
Very useful! Thanks!
You’re welcome 😊👍🏼

i'm new to final cut pro.. i found your channel when i was looking for ways to fix plugin errors. i haven't been able to fix it yet, but your channel is very helpful.
Glad you like the content on the channel 😊👍🏼 Sorry that the fix didn’t work for you. What plugin are you trying to fix? If it’s a Pixel Film Studios plugin, those seem to not always work with this method.
Very helpful, thanks, great video
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome! Thanks a lot for these hacks!

Awesome 😄 Glad you enjoyed it! 👊🏼
Great! Thank very, very much!
You’re welcome 😄👊🏼
Big thumbs up on this one dude!
Appreciate that Vance!
Love this. So helpful. I have been using markers but then dragging clips in and manually cutting each one to the marker. One question, how can you drag a clip that you have put in the timeline out and put another one in?
Glad you enjoyed this video. You can drag a new clip from the browser on top of the original and wait a second for the popup where you can choose to replace the clip. Or, you can simply delete the one and add a new one in it's place. If you are struggling with deleting a clip which causes other clips to disappear then this video on the Magnetic Timeline might help you: ua-cam.com/video/JonW5Zem3ZA/v-deo.html
Great video!
Thanks! 😄🤙🏼
You’re a genius. Thanks a lot for this tutorial

Dude that was so fun to watch. I just learned so much. Shortcuts, work flow and the idea behind the subject. Shit man. Congrats. I'm impressed. Thank you. Who needs school with we have UA-cam lol.
Haha thanks so much Dan 😄🙌🏼 That means a lot and I’m glad you got so much out of it 🤙🏼
Muito bom! Vou fazer assim agora! Gostei!!
Muito obrigado Leonardo! 😊🙏🏼
I like to cut to the beat going one frame back before the beat, I think it syncs better up that way. Great video, will try this workflow 🙂
Thanks Ronny! Yeah some people like to cut one frame before the beat and that is a solid method as well 😄
Amazing vid 🤩
Thanks 😁 Glad you enjoyed it James.
Great video! Keep it up!
Thanks Emilio! Really appreciate that man 😄🙏🏼
Your tutorials helps me a lot , best youtube channel to learn final cut pro .
I really enjoy this tutorial.
Thanks so much Joseph! I’m glad the videos are helpful to you! 😊🤙🏼
@@Brad_West 😅 can you pls teach how to use cinematic transitions
Do you mean in-camera transitions or transitions created in editing?
Maybe this video on mask wipe transitions is what you’re after: ua-cam.com/video/_CobwN-GX5c/v-deo.html
@@Brad_West thanks for replying back on our questions
comprehensive!
Thank you! 😄🙏🏼
Thank you
You’re welcome 😄👊🏼
Have you ever done a video about making your intro clip? I’m also new using FCPX, and I’m getting a lot out of your videos
Hey Joel. I haven’t, but I created that using After Effects. You could create something similar using the elements in the FCPX Titles, Graphics and Transitions pack I did a video on recently.
Glad you’re getting value from the videos. Super happy to hear that! 😊
As a total FCPX noob....This is FREE?!?! Thank you SO MUCH!!
Glad you enjoyed it 😄 Thanks for watching 👍🏼
Thank u so much~
You're welcome 😊
Well done....
Thank you! Cheers!
Yo great VIDEO!!
Thanks so much 😊👊🏼
You are ma man . best channel
Thanks so much. Appreciate the support 😊👊🏼
Hi Brad, what is your thoughts about using compound clip? Can you give some tips, short cuts and easy way to apply it.. I'm still learning FCPX, looking forward to your next tutorials...
Compound clips are really powerful. That will make a great tutorial. I'll add it to my list. Thanks for the idea! 😊
This is brilliant so helpful thank you, may i ask what text style you use or the font in each of your videos on the headline please x
Thanks Matt 😀 On the thumbnails and intro/outro I use "DK Sensory Overload" and for the headings in the tutorial I use "Intro". Thanks for watching!
@@Brad_West Hey thanks for replying, the one on the thumbnail i meant is that in fcpx ?
It’s not in FCPX by default, but you can download it for free from dafont.com and install it to use it in FCPX 😊👍🏼
very nice
Thanks 👍🏼
Thanks for this one too. Know I just need some good clips for this. Lol
Nice! Good luck 😄👍🏼
Done tons of lyric videos and music videos but never used the "bracket".. This is GENIUS (and so obvious) ..no i feel like an idiot! But from now on this idiot will save alot of time! Thank you!
I'm so glad you found that tip helpful! Thanks for watching Thomas 😄🙌🏼
Thank you this is just what I was looking for. Is there a way you can save the music track including the beats marked out for another project?
You can put the music track on it's own timeline, export an XML and then import that XML file into your new project. It will import with the markers 😄
@@Brad_West Thanks for your info.
@@alanabley525 You're welcome!
Hi Brad! I can't seem to find the delete key on mu keyboard, all I have is the backspace key. I have to go to edit/replace with gap. Great greta tip though!!!
Ah, you must have the shorter keyboard. Alternatively you can use the shortcut Cmd + Alt + ⬆️ to lift the clip from storyline and then you can hit the backspace key. Same result, although it’s an extra step. It is probably a little quicker than going via the edit menu 😊👍🏼
Hey Brad, great vid as always.
That little sprinkle you did at the top…is that an FCP effect?
Thanks so much! 😄🙏🏼 that effect was actually done in After Effects with a plug-in called Particular.
@@Brad_West Thanks. I suspected it was too magical to be simple!
Haha yeah it would be nice to be able to do that in FCP 😄
Don't know why I didn't land on this channel before? I have lately started watching your videos, and they're really helping me a lot.
Really loved the video.❤
I really liked the 'TIPS' effect you have made at the beginning of this video, and I have been looking for that very effect to use in my edits! It would be great if you could share how to do it?
Really appreciate that Jai! I’m glad you’ve found the videos helpful 😊🙌🏼 I actually used a particle generator in After Effects to generate the tips particles and I made sure to add gravity to make it look like they were falling. Hope that helps 🤞🏼
@@Brad_West Oh! I am getting started with fcpx and have apple motion for post production ( yet to learn ), will look into motion if I could produce anything similar 😊
Yeah I think there is a particle generator in Apple Motion. I would recommend checking out The Final Cut Bro on UA-cam if you don’t already know him. He has some great Apple Motion tutorials 😄👌🏼
good video, where is the delete key on macbook pro not backspace
The MacBook doesn’t have a delete key but if you hold down shift and then hit backspace, it does the same thing 😊👍🏼
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately setting markers through a whole track is time-consuming as it has to hit the exact beat. We're missing a Transient auto-marker function in FCP
Yeah that would be a great feature! Would love to see Apple include that in a future update 😄🤞🏼
+Thanks a LOT Keep on going
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching 😄👊🏼
Is there any way to do the same thing, but in a way where you can choose different quantizations?? That would be be EXTREMELY helpful 🙏🏽
Yeah that would be so handy. Unfortunately not. Maybe Apple will give us something like that in a future update. They have the tech in other apps like Logic and Garage Band, so seeing quantization features or beat detection features in FCP would be amazing.
I almost dropped my phone running to the like button so fast 😅
Haha 🤣👍🏼
Great video however every time I try to add my cuts to where my footage will be only where I see it is on my audio clip. What am I doing wrong?
Is your audio clip on the primary storyline? It might help to drop the audio below the primary storyline and add your footage to the primary storyline.
How did you insert a video placeholder as primary clip for cutting to the beat which will then be replaced by actual selected clips? Thanks in advance.
You can add a gap clip to the primary storyline using the shortcut Option W 😄👍🏼
This was AWESOME! Super helpful - Question: For Mac users, around 4:00 you mention used the delete key, not backspace. Our delete key acts as a backspace, do you know what we should use to simply complete the task that you complete here? Thanks!
I’m glad you enjoyed it Daniel 😊👍🏼 I’m also on a Mac, I just have the extended keyboard but if you only have the delete key, you can hit shift + delete to do what I did here. Hope that helps!
Thanks for watching 😊🙏🏼
@@Brad_West ahh... SUPER helpful. Thanks for helping a noob like myself :)
No problem. Anytime! 😊👊🏼
Hi any tutorials for faster beats like 6 beats after other for highlights
The same principles would apply in terms of creating markers to cut to. But you're likely going to have each shot only last a few frames in that scenario. Or you could experiment with some speed ramps or reversing clips as well.
at 5:12 why do you lift the clips from the main timeline? what does that achieve exactly? also why do you "group" the clips in this instance? thanks!!!
It's a habit I picked up when I add sound effects like "risers" and "hits" to the music. Those sound effects will connect to the video clips and as you trim them they move out of time. Lifting the clips from the primary storyline and keeping them in a group avoids that issue. So it's not really an essential step in this case 😄
Hi Brad, what if you don't have square bracket key on your macbook keyboard? I'd appreciate the help! (5:50 time stamp of your video)
You can customize your keyboard shortcuts by going to Final Cut Pro > Commands > Customize and then you can assign any shortcut to the "Trim Start" and "Trim End" commands. Hope that helps 😄
Thanks, Brad/@@Brad_West, I appreciate the response!
I feel like the song "Beat It" from Michael Jackson would have been extremely appropriate for this video. It's really too bad copyright laws exist. Haha great video as always! 👊
Haha I love a good pun 😂👌🏼 Thanks for the support man, appreciate it 👊🏼
i have a question too you have a blank space in the timeline in between music in video do you have to do this because I've been having problems with it deleting things i don't want to when i have music and video clips and i try to trim down clips i think this middle gap method could possible fix this ha
You can add a gap clip using the shortcut Option W. It sounds like you might be having some trouble getting used to the magnetic timeline. I'd recommend watching this video. It might help you out: ua-cam.com/video/JonW5Zem3ZA/v-deo.html
