Good info. One thing to add. If there is no voltage reading, you may be able to isolate the issue further. You could put the voltmeter negative lead on the battery negative or chassis ground somewhere to see if there is voltage when the voltmeter positive lead is on pin 16. If there is, you would know that the issue would be the ground wire in the connector on pin 4. and not a fuse issue. Likewise, you could put the voltmeter positive lead on the battery positive and measure with the negative lead to pin 4, which would indicate the issue would be the wire in the connector pin 16, or the supplying fuse. Of course, there is a chance that both wires are bad!!
Thanks for Video. I was able to pass my failed emissions test do to "no power" to the OBD connector. I also avoided having to pay 167 dollars for a diagnostic fee at the local shop. The problem was a blown 10a fuse in the "Room LP" slot. I never would have found it without your video.
So glad I found this video before I went under the dash searching for a loose connection or broken wire! I just bought a $40 OBDII scan tool and the vehicle I needed it for showed NOTHING when I plugged in the brand new scanner. It was the Cigar fuse under the hood that when replaced, energized the OBDII port and a simple fix!

I would jumper 12v to the + pin and check to see if the rest of the port is Ok before I start pulling wires. The odb port is part of the ecu so if it won't talk once your scan tool is powered up, you have bigger problems than " no power" . I've never seen a truly dead odb port, always connections...we have a saying in consumer electronics: "silicon doesn't fail, connectors and capacitors fail"

Thanks Boss! I had this problem with my Kenworth Semi a couple of times and I get charged $140 per hour for someone to look at it. It was the fuse. The mechanics will say they swapped out the electrical, and just swap the fuse. 9 times out of 10. That's expensive!!

I've got a 03 Ram 1500 5.9L that has no fuel, no spark and no code reader. ECU is not putting out 5v for the spark and im working through it. Wondering if the crank sensor can cause all this or just a bad ecu?
Many thanks for your video. I do not dare to use the new battery again. The smelling of chemicals from day one scares me. However the curiosity and my ignorance is killing me slowly.... I know that I can do some things and maybe my Corolla 98 1.8L will still be driveable, with another starter, to take it to the right doctor. The new battery rated 500 CCA was showing measured 720 CCA after a drive of 2 miles and I had never seen such result on 30 years of driving. Is that possible? I also discovered wires exposed under the sleeve hole in the positive cable. Many thanks in advance if you have some feedback.
Hey bud. To be honest, that is a lot to diagnose in a UA-cam comment. I would not be comfortable suggesting you do anything you are not experienced with given what has already happened. Sounds like something is wonky in that car and you might want to have a professional give it a look. A lot can go wrong when electricity is on the fritz
Having the same problem. Fuse keeps blowing when I swap it out but sometimes it’s immediate and others I can drive around a little. The cigar port is fine because I can charge my phone. Nothing looks corroded. Pulled out my radio to see if anything looked fishy or fuse keeps blowin and it didn’t make a difference . Any other thoughts ?
On the Cherokee it a built in tester just turn your key on until the instrument lights up on and off three times any codes will display in the odometer reading all clear it will say done
My 2017 Honda civics OBD2 port isn’t receiving power. I checked the fuse box under the passenger side. They said it was fuse 7, but it wasn’t blown and the OBD2 port has no power. Any tips?
Late to the party on this - trying to run an ODB2 on a 2010 Land Rover LR 4, would not connect at all, turned the vehicle fully on, and immediately codes start popping, revs start falling and the interior goes dark. Recharge the battery, try using a power bank plugged into the odb2 sensor, viola it pops up, though the app is intermittent and doesn’t complete tasks. Try a cheap harbor freight reader and it works, though I note it had a bit of the same power draw, suddenly turning on stability and park brake errors. I’ll check the fuse tomorrow and try to find a multimeter
H! My reader is not connecting with the app but the blue light comes on when I plug it in so I'm assuming the Old port is getting power. Any idea what else it could be that would cause this? Check engine light on in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler. Thanks!
@@HuskerRed11 I did, thanks! hello I have a 2004 ford ranger fx4 4.0 L v6 truck and my odb reader isnt working. would you help me find fuse it is to replace? the manual doesn't say thank you
I had an intermittent engine management issue. While trying to monitor live data with a scan tool, my scan tool would lose connection when the issue was present. It was fine when there was no issue. I did find corrosion in one of the connectors for the ECM, itself. Then I found out that the GM fuse boxes that are under the hood, are notorious for getting majorly corroded. That would make sense why the the OBD2 port would sometimes lose power and not blow a fuse. I'm about to remove it and take it apart and see. A new one is about $350.
Goon morning I have issues with my OBD I check the wire like u say I check the OBD fuse is good too 😢there a problem to my van n was trying to find out what r the codes
I've had a sudden crank no start situation w with codes leading to the purge valve and evap. I tested all that still nothing I went to test my fuses I had a blown ignition coil fuse replaced it it did seem like it wanted to turn over spray starter fluid still nothing so I noticed that my OBD2 Bluetooth adapter wasn't holding a connection it would connect but then it would disconnect so I took my Dash plastic off and it seems that the OBD2 port is very loose and I have to hold it in a certain position to get it to keep a connection any thoughts?

NONE OF my fuses are blown my car runs fine except the dash gauges all stopped working about 8 months ago then they worked again last month for 30 mins then stopped again. I can get it to pass smog because of No Bus no communication so I can't get my tags on my car I NEED HELP . CAN ANYONE HELP ME. GOD BLESS AND THANK YOU
Wouldn't an open circuit on 4 and 5 cause it not to work since the grounds could be open.....just going to a chassis ground and not pin 4 and 5 doesn't check the ground side of ALDL, a loss of power or ground is still an open
So what about an obd2 port that has 12 volts of power but as soon as a reader is hooked to it it drops to 2 volts and won't even turn a reader on?
And bilingual!
Awesome video bro!
Thanks bud. Great video. Made it super easy.
Thanks my brother.., 08 corvette liter fuse caused my odb2 port not to communicate
I’ve got a 04 grand Cherokee no obd power and no cluster mileage and no cluster illumination got any idea ? No blown fuses
I have the same issue, Did you ever end up fixing this? If so, what was the cause?
5:41 Chevy exspress van 2004 obd and lighter not wor
ODBII port not powering scanner on 2008 PT Cruiser. Checked fuses and not seeing an issue. Any ideas on another solution, specific fuse to check ?
Something I'm trying to figure out. I want to build a custom digital gauge cluster for my car. I didn't need it to power on with the OBD2 port. Just a standard power port on the car is good. If i didn't connect to the power pin on the OBD2, will i still be able to get the data? My device will be powered from somewhere else in the car
2006 Chrysler it not reading for my emission
Thanks! Turns out this 2012 Nissan Juke got put back into 'storage mode' somehow with a factory switchable fuse being unlocked.
I've got a 03 Ram 1500 5.9L that has no fuel, no spark and no code reader. ECU is not putting out 5v for the spark and im working through it. Wondering if the crank sensor can cause all this or just a bad ecu?
my check engine light is not working anymore or my obd data port..any ideas? thanks for video.
Mr. Lee, did U Get Ur Issue Fixed!?
I have a 2011 Silverado 6.0 gas 2500 HD my obd2 port doesn't work and the fuses are all good , so where does this dlc ground at ?
I had this problem in my 2001 ford windstar it was just a fuse same with the cigarette lighter
I have a 2000 Nissan Altima the data link connector only has power in pin 8 + 13 why
There is a short to ground, when ever, you press something e.g use horn or wiper for an example
Thanks!
Did you get it figured out?
@@HuskerRed11 I did, thanks! I think I screwed something up when I wired up a back up camera summer before last because my battery keeps draining and my back up lights don’t work and it failed inspection so I’m waiting for the opportunity to take the damn thing apart. Go through it all have been able to drive it in months.
@Christine Leary Ok cool. Thanks for replying Christine.
hello I have a 2004 ford ranger fx4 4.0 L v6 truck and my odb reader isnt working. would you help me find fuse it is to replace? the manual doesn't say
thank you
did you ever find the issue?
If wire is broken can you connect to another +
Thanks for posting
will a scanner work if you can't start the vehicle?
Thank You
I had an intermittent engine management issue.
