Remember when the "People in Charge" Decided it was OK to nuke NYC in Avengers? Interesting how Ross didn't bring that up in his little Accords sales pitch.
I hated that scene. The reasons for the Avengers needing to be put in check had multiple painful examples of correlation, not causation. It was a bit contrived, but then again, ignorant people do it all the time. 1. Avengers saved the day with the Nuke. 2. Captain America saved the world from getting taken over by Hydra. 3. Wanda prevented the bomb from blowing up on the ground which would have killed 3-4x the number of people. Basically Sachovia was the only one they were really to blame for, but compared to any government, or anyone trying to deal with the situation, they allowed an incredibly small amount of casualties. Not to mention the not retrieving the "glow stick of destiny" could have cost a lot more lives. In essence, the Avengers are way more beneficial and have way less consequences than any other army on the planet.
@@tigerteeguarden5020 I guess the tone of the movie was serious. It would be funny if avengers brought up that argument. Besides it's one incidence vs 4+ incidents caused by avengers
Another form of symbolism that shows that Tony is the true antagonist is when he’s eyeballing a shot at Bucky because his targeting system was damaged...directly mirroring the ending of the first iron man where Obadiah had the same problem when trying to kill Tony.
The way the writers have cap not change, and the conflict comes from an outside source due to being a good person, are lessons that should be applied to a superman film if there's ever a sequel
While I was watching this video I had the thought of “man everything that captain America stood for and the decisions he makes are exactly what man of steel should’ve been”
@@9ii864 Well Cap never really wanted to kill anyone since day. Also Bucky was running and avoiding the fight. Iron Man out of all was being hostile and if you can't see that, you are honestly being biased. Why would Cap wanna fight Stark as at that time? Well Stark was trying to kill his friend and his initial reaction would be to stop him and not make it worse. Why was Tony being hostile? Bucky killed his parents and i ask you this, wouldn't you want to kill the man who ruined your life? Even if you don't, you will think about it. Why was Bucky being passive? Well he out of all was trying to stay out of the fight and didn't wanna get killed. He tried to get out of the bunker and the only reason he was fighting Iron Man was because of Steve who was getting his ass handled to him. So Stark clearly wanted to murder Bucky here and why would he care about anything else? Cap and Tony's relationship may have been the best thing after or maybe during Civil War but before they were never really friends, they were just partners and they both have distinguishable ideology. There are many shots where you can say that this character could have easily killed that or this, for instance Tony could have easily disintegrate Cap with his repulsors when he didn't have the shield but he didn't. And Cap could have easily killed Tony in the final shot but he didn't. If Iron Man really could have killed both, well why did he? He clearly was on the verge of killing Bucky. Oh so you mean all these drama about fighting Cap and shooting missiles was to have a friendly conversation in the end? I don't think so. The only person who wasn't holding back in that scene was mostly Iron Man and it was clearly being shown bit i guess that you won't agree because you are definitely being a fanboy.
@@perce1veALL I didn't say cap wanted to kill Iron man. Also Tony was being hostile because he just saw a video of his parents getting ruthlessly murdered. I'm not saying what iron man did was right but it was something that is understandable. Iron man never tried to kill cap. Also if Steve had just told Tony non of this would have happened. If Iron man didn't show any mercy they both would have died. Even in the final scene before Cap says "I can do this all day" iron man gave him a clear WARNING and a chance. Also during the airport scene Tony literally says "I'm trying to keep you from tearing the avengers apart". Cap and Tony were friends. Iron man wanted to kill bucky but definitely not cap.How am I the fan boy ? Am I the one with an iron man profile? Iron man was wrong in some occasions but so was cap.
@@swanpride Just recently watched The First Avenger again. It gets better knowing the full context of the trilogy. Steve Rogers is such a rich character.
I love how in the MCU you never have the hero’s doing something out of character unless it fits the story and makes sense. In my opinion that is their greatest move; being true to the characters.
I’ve never loved Civil War (my favorite has always been Winter Soldier) but this video is incredible and has changed my perspective. Perfect excuse for a rewatch!
@Galva Tron I think Zemo is great and extremely poetic and symbolic. He's not at all the iconic villain that is his counterpart in the comics and he's not as rememberable or as iconic as the other mcu villains but he's the best villain that suits the story and themes and he's the only villain asides from Thanos that has come out on top of the Avengers
Abhishek Suratkar Loki would be a good one to see him do as well. Before Infinity War I had a theory that Loki has been a good guy since the end of Thor 1. He had been a hero for 1500 years before Thor 1 after all. I argued that after he met Thanos he tricked him into giving him the mind stone so he could, with trickery, give it to the Avengers. That’s why he assembled them, to fight Thanos. Now they say that Thanos was actually using the mind gem to manipulate Loki. Idk why Thanos would give one of the Infinity Stones to a puppet to try & get another, but either that blows my theory.
The points in this video are valid and solid, I think. Watching this video confirms my reasons of why I believe the Captain America trilogy is the best in the MCU. Also, I think the analysis in this video debunks the idea that CA: Civil War is an Avengers movie.
100% agreed. Avengers movies are about following the journey of a group of extraordinary, yet different people coming together against an overwhelming force. Captain America: Civil War has one main journey despite having other Avengers it and here it's not about them coming together but splitting apart.
Captain America’s arc is the the reason for the success of the MCU. The most cheered for moment in Endgame was Captain America’s stand against Thanos, beginning with him lifting the hammer. Of all the actors to leave the MCU, Evans leaving is the one that ends the reign...
@@themadtitan7603 The focus is on Captain America and Iron Man. The other Avengers have their moments, but they are just there for world building; they aren't the focus.
I have started to feel with the release of the Snyder Cut, people are hyperbolically saying like "BVS IS THE SMARTEST MOVUE OF ALL TIME, CIVIL WAR IS A SATURDAY MORNING KID'S CARTOON." And I am like this is so damn false. The only nitpick they have made which can be considered is the plot holes and nearly every story has plot holes of some capacity.. Civil War is a pretty smart movie that is questioning human beliefs and society norms like BVS. SO stop with it and enjoy both...
@@shealupkes why aren't they friends? They've fought side by side for years by this point. They hang out together, talk about their lives outside of work, joke with each other, hang out with the same people, and have a great deal of respect for each other. The only obstacle between them is perspective. There are plenty of people in the world that are friends with differing ideologies. There's also their personality. Steve is friend's with everyone. So him calling Tony a friend isn't a reach. Tony, on the other hand, his circle of friends is small. For him to consider Steve a friend is a big deal but also not a reach. Tony has trust issues and he trusts Steve. So I disagree that they haven't established a friendship before this moment. We've *seen* that friendship. And at this point in the movie, they've even accepted the other's ideology. Steve was a government man and Tony was all about personal liberties. Now Tony is fighting for government oversight and Steve is fighting for a single individual. They drank each other's koolaid.
Isn't it interesting that Bucky killed his mom...AND his dad. In the same event. But Tony only mentions one of them. (Of course people are going to explain how that's because Tony and Howard were estranged but I think it's a rare and uncharacteristic editing mistake made as they were finalising the details of the Bucky footage.)
@@TheEvilCheesecake I think it’s because Maria is innocent in all of this. Yes, Howard was Tony’s dad and he cared about him too but when you set aside emotions, you can see that this was always something that could have happened to Howard at any time because of his job and lifestyle. But Tony’s mom wasn’t a spy or secret agent (that we know of). To our knowledge, she was just a civilian. She never should have been in harm’s way. And I think that’s what hurts the most
I'm not gonna lie, this entire video got me in my feels. Seeing the movie and the characters in this light is just...bruh I'm at work so I gotta get my shit together
Anytime they call back to that line, I wanna cry. Because it's Steve's rallying cry: whether his body may fail him, his ideals won't. He can do this all day.
Cap describes the Accords as: "If we sign this, we surrender our right to choose. What if this panel sends us somewhere we don't think we should go? What if there's somewhere we need to go and they don't let us? We may not be perfect but the safest hands are still our own." No one refutes Steve's characterization of the Accords. But Steve isn't just talking about the Accords. He's also talking about Bucky. Bucky has been robbed of his volition by Hydra. Bucky never chose to join Hydra. Bucky can't volunteer for assignments. Bucky can't recommend missions that he thinks he should undertake. He can't offer alternative strategies for the missions he is assigned to. Bucky just does what his Hydra superiors tell him to. Bucky is the living embodiment of the Accords. And the pro-Accords faction in Civil War is trying to kill him for that. After the embassy bombing, when all they have to go on is some grainy security footage, Ross immediately sends out an assassination team to murder Bucky. They all know he's just a tool of Hydra, that he would likely have been given that assignment by his "superiors" in whatever remnant Hydra cell has control over him. But no one is interested in tracking down and eliminating the Hydra cell. They just want to kill Bucky. But not Steve. Steve knows Bucky wouldn't have decided on his own account to blow up the UN. So Steve saves Bucky in order to find out who is really behind events. And by the end of the fight, we are introduced to Black Panther, a champion of the Accords, a guy who claims that superheroes should only engage in missions if they are sent by a superior authority. Yet BP isn't on assignment. He's on a personal mission of vengeance. At the first available opportunity, he ignores his obligations to the Accords in favor of a personal vendetta because he believes that his hands are best suited to direct his actions. By the end of the movie, we have Steve telling Bucky that he never had a choice but to serve Hydra, about how he isn't responsible for his actions because his ability to choose was stripped from him. And Bucky responds that he still did it. While Tony attempts to escape blame for the consequences of his actions, Bucky (who cannot be held morally accountable for his) nonetheless feels guilty for his. So when Tony discovers that Bucky was sent to kill his parents, he doesn't blame Hydra - he blames Bucky. Despite knowing that Bucky had no choice, that he was forced to kill Howard and Maria against his will, Tony still hold Bucky accountable. Tony repudiates the entire purpose of the Accords and tries to kill their living avatar. That is the genius of Civil War. The champions of the Accords relentlessly attacks and tries to murder the Accords (all while evading or ignoring their obligations to their superior authorities). The opponents of the Accords try to protect and preserve the Accords.
I was thinking the same thing when Ben was talking about Tony being the antagonist of the story and I saw the imagery of the three of them fighting at the end of the movie. The composition of the shot mirrored the shot of Steve, Rhodey and Sam. The way the two of them are contrasted in the two scenes is awesome. While Cap is shown to be pragmatic, Tony is shown to be enraged, while both are portrayed as being in the center of their respective conflicts, ideologically and physically.
Golden State Warriors Throughout most of the movie we are not given any information about how much Tony knows about Bucky’s connection to Hydra. But unless Tony has completely ignored everything revolving around the collapse of SHIELD and its infiltration by Hydra, never asked Steve what was going on with that whole “Captain America is a wanted traitor” thing, never saw any news footage of Bucky attacking Cap and Widow and never asked about any backstory on Bucky when he was captured and activated by Zemo, then he should know something. And he could easily get his AI butler to fill in the blanks. And at the end, of course, they’re in a Hydra base when Tony learns that Bucky killed his parents - in a room filled with other dead Winter Soldiers. So putting the pieces together shouldn’t be that hard. On the other hand, Tony has a long-established habit of reacting emotionally first and thinking things through second.
@@flatebo1 Yeah Tony definitely had an emotional reaction. I agree with you. But I still think if Steve told Tony during Age of Ultron, it could've been avoided. That was the lie.
I'm gonna be completely honest, I love James but this was head and shoulders above 95% of his videos. Excellent work Ben From Canada. By the power vested in me, I hereby dub thee Mr. Monday Films.
To be fair, it's a completely different type of video than anything James does. Almost all the videos here are deep dives into easter eggs/references, light trailer analysis, or let's plays of old video games. This is a pure film analysis/video essay and it has a much more serious tone than everything else on the channel. Wouldn't mind getting one of these more often.
It’s a great video no doubt, but I’m nearly at the end and Ive only laughed once ‘with the power of friendship’... Ben from Canada needs a bearded sidekick with an infinity gauntlet
Cap is a hypocrite. He was confronted with a mass murderer in the form of his best friend and instead of doing what he espoused, becoming judge jury and executioner for his crimes, instead fought Iron man, who was trying to do the exact thing for which Cap destroyed the avengers.
"Where do your beliefs come from" Ok man I know that it's called Mr. Sunday Movies but damn did you need to bring the gospel of Steve Rogers today? Awesome Video Ben!
The thing i most love is that if the accords came in during avengers 1, they would be on opposite sides. At the start of his arc cap is trusting of the government, but learns they arent trustworthy. Tony however first rejects the government and doesnt give up the suit, but after constantly failing by his own poor judgement, he relies on government oversight because he cant trust himself. Such amazing arcs!
He’s also trying to get Pepper back by being able to finally walk away from the Avengers. Tony doesn’t get his happily ever after with Pepper until the Avengers break up and Tony can focus on her.
This has always been my favourite MCU movie but...wow! You really made me see a different side to it and even a different side to myself. Thank You for the video, this is my favourite video on the channel.
This is an excellent film breakdown. I always thought tony was the villain in this film. Cap is almost incorruptible. Cap is the true hero of the avengers. Hands down

Fuckin THANK YOU. Finally someone else understands this movie. It’s a *Captain America* movie for a reason. It follows Cap’s narrative for a reason. Yeah Zemo set it up or w/e but Tony is the villain in the movie, through and through.
Same here. Infinity War definitely lived up to the hype and then some but I had Zero expectations going into The Winter Soldier and it completely blew me away. It was so amazing. The dark tone, the story, the setting and the action. Everything seemed so perfect. Could not believe how good it was. That bridge scene was so freaking epic.
Cap never changing, always being the heart of the team and the best among us, is why he's my favorite. He can't compromise. I'm excited to see how his character is challenged in Endgame. Infinity War had him refusing to trade lives. No compromise. But they lost. The next film will have him do "whatever it takes". Do we get to see his character break? Does he decide his life is the only life he's willing to trade? I can't wait to see.
More like he decides to trade his life to save everyone's. Never breaking his code, going down with the ship to save the omniverse from the Infinity Stones just like in WWII.
@surfitlive But he still sacrificed himself meaning if he had a code, he already broke it. I was making that point to the initial commenter. Also, didn't Vision make that decision? Nobody else was even around right?
This is why DC can't get Superman right in film since Christopher Reeve. Cap and Supes are both fundamentally good and the moral compass. Conflict for them doesn't come from inside.
I always considered Winter Soldier to be the best but I'll be damned if this video doesn't do an excellent job of making the case for Civil War by bringing up great points about the character development and how it pertained to this point in the (MCU) series.
Civil War is definitely more complex. It takes multiple viewings to see actually how many layers there are. I personally was disappointed when I watched it in theatres. Then I rewatched it over and over again, and every goddamn time I find some amazing detail in it. Steve's arc is one of the most tragic ones in MCU, especially in this movie, but it's played in a such a subdued and grounded way, like there are no overly long expositions about what he's going through, no long monologues, it's all shown in Evans's performance and in small lines here and there. You may not notice what he's going through, many didn't. Russos are great with subtlety and it shows.
@GiRayne. Was wondering where you were going and then we got there "I don't feel Civil War earns it's name..." The great big thing WS has going for it, and it is great and big, is that in the middle of a comic book movie, a noir thriller breaks out. It gives the piece a realism that tricks you into thinking it's more serious; the political intrigue is more grounded and so we attach extra gravitas to it. It's difficult to see beyond the superheroes but CW is entirely more ambitious and less by the numbers. It really should have taken The Martian's spot on the 2016 Best Picture noms and if it was a bunch of normal folks saying the exact same things with the exact same plot, it might have.
I'll be the dick here. Zemo's plan was excessively complicated to the point of requiring people finding dead bodies in order to cause people to do what he wanted. There were so many points where it should've or could've failed that it never should've made it through in the first place. Tony Stark has consistently shown that he doesn't want government interference and that he actively spits in the face of authority. Then he swings around and changes his perspective because a grumpy lady complains to him about how her kid died. Tony has never shown any interest in the welfare of others outside of his direct friends and family. He's the guy willing to kill people. He's the guy willing to draw a known "Super Terrorist" to attack his house where the love of his life lives. The governments all saying "Screw the avengers it's all their fault everything went wrong" doesn't work simply because out of all the examples they use only one was a direct result of the avengers. There would be some governments who would fight against it and others that would agree to it, sure, but not all of them would agree. The accords themselves just BLAM out of nowhere. This is literally impossible, every single person in the Avengers would've known about it as soon as it was the twinkle in a pickle's eye.
I know this is an older film of yours, Ben, but I've gotta say you're really good at visual communication with the way you edit your cuts with your voice-over in order to tell a story. A very talented documentarian indeed. Love all of your films, and I hope you enjoy making them as much as I enjoy watching them.
Eddie Banuelos you can keep hating it. The underlying sub plot stuff wasn’t hidden the way he makes it seem. This movie wasn’t that great and part of its reasoning is how hard it hits you in the face with these points. Sorry Ben from.....Canada.....it just wasn’t a very good movie. BvS did it better.

The best breakdown of this film I've ever seen. I've continued to hold that Civil War is the best comicbook film ever made, and you've articulated why perfectly. Thank you sir.
The BEST part of this film WITHOUT A DOUBT, is in the final fight. When Steve has Tony taken down and goes to deliver the final blow, Tony's lack of trust makes him block a kill shot. Steve never would have killed him, we all know that, he was just going for the suit. Tony's fear is his downfall, but Steve's heart is why he wins.
Tommy Vercetti Yeah, but the point is, if Tony was thinking, he would have protected the suits power core. Tony knows Steve isn't a murderer, especially if it's his friend. That's why it's great choreography and writing.
@@JJJ-uo2xb true, the fact that Tony couldn't see through Zemo's manipulation & knowing with all the evidence Bucky is innocent & being used as pawn, shows Stark difference (pun intended) between impulsive Tony vs someone level headed like Cap or T'Challa
For a second, Steve also clearly thought about killing him. Why do you think he smashed his helmet? There was no reason for it, he could've easily gone for his arch reactor and it would be done, but instead he sacrificed his timing by smashing his head over and over again. It was clearly a momentary rage, but he changes his mind and comes to his senses right after.
1. Black Panther 2. Black Panther 3. Black Panther 4. Black Panther 5. Black Panther Can’t believe we still live in a society where art is overlooked just because it’s made by black people.
Kobe Langston That’s…not true at all 😂😂😂😂😂 If anything Black Panther received too much praise. I loved it, but it’s really not a contender for the title of best superhero movie of all time.
T'Challa is a richer, wiser Tony Stark. He pulled himself back from murder, all on his own. Not enough attention is paid to the parallel between T'Challa's story and Tony's. Both are mad about the death of parent(s). T'Challa's loss JUST happened and he still held himself back more effectively at a younger age than Tony.
Cam James absolutely!! It demonstrates so much about T’Challa’s character and, for me at least, sets him up well for his first movie in that there’s little question that he’s worthy of his title.
I think the key is dual, first T'Challa had a much better relationship with his father than Tony ever did. Furthermore Tony's intense unrelenting grief stems from the fact that not only was his relationship bad with his father, but he was much younger when his father died and he'd never have a chance to repair that relationship, ever. T'Chaka himself said that part of being a good parent is preparing the child to live after they die. T'Challa also had his mother still. Second, T'Challa also had the benefit of shadowing Tony and Steve's conflict and getting to see it from an outside lens. However T'Challa was wise enough to realize he was looking at a reflection and to choose a different path. So there is a difference between Tony and T'Challa. T'Challa in this movie was revenge motivated by grief and loss. Tony on the other hand was revenge motivated by guilt and regret. I think T'Challa also was able to recognize that Zemo was motivated by grief as well. There were so many character reflections in this film it looks like a fun house sometimes.
Winter Soldier and Civil War are alot like Alien and Aliens in my mind. The first movies are masterpieces 10/10 in their execution. The next ones are about one down not executed flawlessy, but attempted more (10 out of 11) meaning.
I'm glad that there are others out there that appreciate the intricacies and depth in this movie. Civil War is my #1 rewatched Marvel movie. Captain America is my favorite MCU hero because he is good. You can give me morally grey heroes all day, but I look to a hero to be better than me; someone who makes the moral choice so often that when they misstep (even with a little secret) the whole world seems thrown into chaos. I think there aren't as many Cap fans out there because it's easier to empathize and relate to a flawed character. Not many people want their own choices put into question by a truly virtuous character. For me, I look to Cap as the example that I can be better than what I am; that I can rise from the "grey" and virtuous as well. Not to say that will happen, but it's something to hope and strive for. And isn't that what superheroes are supposed to give us? Hope?
Perfect summation of why I and many who do so consider Civil War the best. Look, Winter Soilder is a great movie, it really is great action, intensity, and plot but it has sort of weak 3rd act and the villain (Alexander Pierce not Bucky) is kind of hollow without Robert Reford's performance. Civil War on the other hand, has more character development, better drama, expertly paced and structured, and the villain actually wins at the end.
Love this. Cap is one of my faves. I guess with superheroes in general I like the idea of somebody who has every power and advantage uses it to do good at all costs. Just warms my heart when it’s done well!
This was an amazingly executed essay... beautiful even. I loved the interplay of these 2 titans and this said everything I was feeling without knowing it needed words to cement it. Well done!
I thought Tony was right except for going after Bucky but that was understandable. Even T'Chala went after Bucky for revenge. Tony's reaction was more similar to Peter Quill's reaction in IW as both are very emotional characters and I consider neither of them to be villains. Flawed characters are just more interesting.
Villain and antagonist are different. Tony isn't evil, he isn't a villain. But in this movie he's in conflict with our main character, our protagonist. Whether he's right or wrong the movie takes the side of Cap, automatically making him the antagonist.
10:11 In other words, unstoppable force meets immovable object TBH Tony, and Steve never wanted to kill each other. They are just venting. It's more destructive because they are superheros. As Tony says in Homecoming, if Cap wanted to kill someone, he would have and so would Tony. We are talking about a walking-talking tank and a guy with a Frisbee that takes out jets.

The fact that the final battle between Tony and Cap in the film overshadows that entire nerdgasm tarmac fight is a testament to Marvel’s character work.

How could you have been on Tony's side when it was plain to see that all he did was think with his emotions? Horrible. He became insanely annoying. Iron Man 3 showed how annoying he really could be. Then Civil War!! Oh jeez...At that time, I wouldn't have mind if Cap smashed his face with his shield at the end. Tony deserved it. @Ngoc Que Nguyen a person is still a person even if they have special power, they deserve rights and freedom just like us, they shouldn't lose those just because we feel paranoid about their power, this is the same argument against the mutants, just because the mutants have special power and we feel fear, it doesn't mean we can make special demands from them. And we shouldn't blindly trust the government just because they're the government, honestly I wouldn't sign the accords unless they specify all the criterion on which they would order missions, the accords weren't even drafted with input from the avengers, no public consultation whatsoever, and the avengers were asked to sign, it's crazy.
@@jueshihuanggua3162 I agree that they who own superpowers should not lose their human rights, but Avengers do more than just minding their own business. They interfere with security of other countries, just because they think they're doing "the right thing", and that needs to be given a second thought. The Accords are not about imprisoning the supers, it's about the boundaries that the supers should respect. And it will be revised, as Tony said, just like any other law documents are constantly be changed and improved upon.

I mean the first thing Tony does after saying superheroes shouldn't operate without government over-site or hide behind masks, is recruit Spider-man. A kid that no-one but Tony knows anything about, and it's pretty obvious he never looped the UN or Ross in on it. So straight out of the gate, it's pretty obvious Tony doesn't really believe in what he's trying to sell.
"With great power comes great responsibility." Stark doesn't want the responsibility and wants to take it off his shoulders and place it on the bureaucracy.
I think that some of this power is in the monologues, black Panthers "I'll kill him myself" and then Zemo and his resolution at the end are really hard hitting
No longer having Cap and Tony moving forward is a HUGE hurdle for the MCU (so is COVID-19 and theater’s closing 😭) but even though the MCU has cultivated some great characters over the years, I can’t help but think the best years of the MCU are behind them now. I very much hope I’m wrong but in any case it’s been an incredible decade of movies that my 8 year old self never could’ve imagined. I’ve been alive for 3 1/2 decades and for 1 of those decades I got to experience a literal dream come true. That is really saying something ❣️
I get the love for Captain America: Civil War, but really, the one I keep going back to again and again is Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It has a better story, more believable motivations, and, imho, a few of the best fight scenes compared with all of the MCU films. Yeah, the fight scene at the airport was a huge achievement in fight choreography, and had lots of everyone's favorite characters all together. But I can't help but love that elevator fight scene with Cap and the Shield agents. And the emotional core of Winter Soldier I thought was perfect. Personally, while I also really like Civil War, it's kind of all over the place in some ways.
I love the look on Tony's face when Cap wins. You can tell for a second he's thinking "Wow. I'm kind of a peice of shit! Did I really think Cap would ever try to kill me?" and you can see in that moment he's full of rage and hatred towards himself. It hurts. It physically hurts to watch. Like a wounded child he lashes out at Cap to try to get the last word in some strange vain attempt to save face or prove his point "Gimme back my daddies shield!" Such a great movie.
Ok. First of all the narrative you’re setting up really undermines Tony as a person. Their is no sign of him feeling guilty for trying to fight Bucky. And the way you twist the emotion of Tony to put the blame on himself by saying Tony thought “Did I really think Cap would ever try to kill me?” You are projecting your beliefs, about Tony being childish and Cap being the mature one in this situation, on to Tony, himself, to try to reinforce your point. I would say it shows that Tony has lost trust in his friend because Cap lied. Your trying to set up this narrative that Tony is a horrible person because he tried to AVENGE his mother and all that time when he was alone, everything in his life could’ve been different if it wasn’t for hydra using bucky as a tool. I’m not saying that Tony is the good guy I’m just debating your claims, I also don’t think Caps fully in the right here. You give to much credit to Cap but ignore the perspective of Tony dismissing what Tony is really feeling to comfort the idea of Cap being in the right, he isn’t. Cap refused to tell Tony he knew who killed his parents, but on top of all that he literally picks Bucky’s side instead of staying neutral, highlighting that Cap himself has his own agenda, and everybody ignores that.
Captain also learned something in these movies. Civil War is about taking responsability of your acts and how we face this responsability: I agree with your exposition of Tony's feels, but I think that Cap has learned that this time is now his time and just defending his past leads to break his present: 'So was I' Tony answered when Cap said 'He is my friend' and I think that until that moment Cap hadn't thought about it. I think in this movie Cap finally learned that now he has something again: it was not SHIELD, it was no Peggy, even not Bucky, all of that is past, but now he has a family that, besides, we call Avengers and for the first time, at the end of this movie and later in Infinity War, we watch a Captain leading and defending the things he loves NOW and that is the powerful conclusion of that arc beginning in 2010 when Cap answered to Fury with deep nostalgia: 'I had a date'.
Grabs his leg with the power of friendship. I laughed so hard
matt caballero yeah that was an awesome line in a truly awesome synopsis of Civil War.

Remember when the "People in Charge" Decided it was OK to nuke NYC in Avengers? Interesting how Ross didn't bring that up in his little Accords sales pitch.
True. Also, one of those in charge was a Hydra agent.
The nuke was a counter argument. You don't debate with your counter arguments do you?
@@smilingbuddha more like why didnt the avengers bring it up
I hated that scene.

Tfw you get a better arc in someone else's movie than your own standalone film
Another form of symbolism that shows that Tony is the true antagonist is when he’s eyeballing a shot at Bucky because his targeting system was damaged...directly mirroring the ending of the first iron man where Obadiah had the same problem when trying to kill Tony.

The way the writers have cap not change, and the conflict comes from an outside source due to being a good person, are lessons that should be applied to a superman film if there's ever a sequel
While I was watching this video I had the thought of “man everything that captain America stood for and the decisions he makes are exactly what man of steel should’ve been”
Man, that line where Tony says "He killed my mom"
Will Grello tony should’ve been able to kill Bucky
Kyler Gilbert he shouldn’t be able to kill Bucky any easier than he could kill Cap. They’re both super soldiers
He could have killed both of them easily. He didn't kill cap because he didn't want to and he "lost* because it was a 2v1 and a hand to hand fight.

Abhishek Suratkar Loki would be a good one to see him do as well. Before Infinity War I had a theory that Loki has been a good guy since the end of Thor 1.

@Logan Waltz that has nothing to do with this
@@shealupkes why aren't they friends?

@@TheEvilCheesecake I don’t know, I do think it was intentional. But I would be curious if the directors or writers ever talked about it.
@@TheEvilCheesecake I think it’s because Maria is innocent in all of this. But Tony’s mom wasn’t a spy or secret agent (that we know of). To our knowledge, she was just a civilian. She never should have been in harm’s way. And I think that’s what hurts the most

Anytime they call back to that line, I wanna cry. Because it's Steve's rallying cry: whether his body may fail him, his ideals won't. He can do this all day.

How did you know... I mean!? You're not crying! I'm crying! Oh...
Cap describes the Accords as: "If we sign this, we surrender our right to choose. What if this panel sends us somewhere we don't think we should go? What if there's somewhere we need to go and they don't let us? We may not be perfect but the safest hands are still our own."
No one refutes Steve's characterization of the Accords.
Wooo. That's a meaty symbolic post. Take this good like.
Well said. Except that Tony doesnt know about Hydra. But otherwise well said.

Wow. I love Civil War but this actually makes me love it more and rank it higher on the list.
He already traded his life so his code would've already been broken. Vision even calls him out on it in Infinity War.
@surfitlive
But he still sacrificed himself meaning if he had a code, he already broke it.
Cap does change, he bends his morals for bucky and remember Cap never lies
I always considered Winter Soldier to be the best but I'll be damned if this video doesn't do an excellent job of making the case for Civil War by bringing up great points about the character development and how it pertained to this point in the (MCU) series.
Nope
Agreed

We need an Iron Man by Black Sabbath scene again!
Ehhh also kinda a natural reaction to cover his face since it was vulnerable
Tommy Vercetti
Yeah, but the point is, if Tony was thinking, he would have protected the suits power core.

3Rayfire all very good points!
James, do you have a cold?
You sound a little -Canadian- sick.

I do love Civil War, but I still think Winter Soldier is the best film in the MCU. That film is nearly perfect!
Hea best soll stand alone mcu film. One marvel character need a spotlight.
Winter Soldier is far from perfect
Agree! Winter Soldier is definitely my fav, but Civil war comes second :)
Accept the part when cap fights that guy on the boat who holds his own an he's just human.
Hope?
if I had emojis, they would all be claps.
Captain America is by far my favourite MCU character.
It's his determination to overcome obstacles and stand for what he believes in.
@@curtislegall8324 Exactly and he still fights to do the right thing and remains optimistic even after dissallusioned in Civil War.
Love this. Cap is one of my faves. I guess with superheroes in general I like the idea of somebody who has every power and advantage uses it to do good at all costs. Just warms my heart when it’s done well!
Lol I thought the film talked about was going to be Winter Soldier, so when it started, I was like, wait WHAT
This is by far the best and most cogent analysis I think I’ve ever seen. Fantastic job dude!
Hearing Ben reiterate how hard Cap’s life was makes this ending that much sweeter

This fight was the reason why Tony was the first guy who tried to convince Starlord not to attack Thanos out of anger
I too deem it acceptable for you to make more videos about movies on sundays, master.
10:11 In other words, unstoppable force meets immovable object
TBH Tony, and Steve never wanted to kill each other. They are just venting. It's more destructive because they are superheros. As Tony says in Homecoming, if Cap wanted to kill someone, he would have and so would Tony. We are talking about a walking-talking tank and a guy with a Frisbee that takes out jets.
Its a michael joseph jackson movie that never got released to the public

Michael Strong well they are the best marvel movies in this universe
Thank you! This movie is COMPLETELY built from the character work of the MCU over an entire decade, and the big plot beats in the film are only possible from knowing these characters so intimately. The fact that the final battle between Tony and Cap in the film overshadows that entire nerdgasm tarmac fight is a testament to Marvel’s character work.
I am a stubborn person. When I set my mind to something, I keep going. Whether proven wrong or not. It’s a good thing sometimes and a bad thing at other times, but I must say I have been thoroughly impressed by your ability to change my mind. I was originally on Tony’s side, but damn. Edit: I’m very proud that my comment started up an interesting debate as to who was right and why they were right. Good job guys!
They better have a spot in End Game where Tony admits he's wrong...because that is all that matters. Right vs wrong.
@@aymondray9794 thats going to make the departure of Captain America all the more heartbreaking. jesus i cant even start to imagine..... Tony realizing that Steve has been right all along and he dies/leaves
@@aymondray9794 How can you say that Tony's side is entirely wrong? I don't think on emotions like Tony but on the logic side I'm with him. Would you mind nuclear weapons walking freely with a mind, staying in your neighborhood? Would you trade on Ebay if there's no Paypal's guarantee? A society always need a government and no one's above the law. I don't trust Cap after this movie either because the whole thing he did about Bucky was entirely emotions and not for any society as he preached.

Give Ben from Canada more. More content, more videos, more anything. He’s great.
Good job Ben! Civil War is also my favorite MCU film, but I've never been able to articulate why. This is why. Fantastic video.
Like a wounded child he lashes out at Cap to try to get the last word in some strange vain attempt to save face or prove his point "Gimme back my daddies shield!"
Such a great movie.
Perfectly put
That thumb nail looks like its civil war. I'll be happy with either that or winter soldier!

“I don’t care... he killed my mom.” Fucking love that line.
