- Before Damon Lindelof brought his Watchmen sequel to HBO Zack Snyder tackled seemingly the impossible with an adaption of Alan Moore's Watchmen in 2009. Ten years on does it still hold up? In many ways yes but in some ways no. This is out Caravan Of Garbage review, thanks for watching.

no Tim Burton was considering having Johnny Depp as every character lets be realistic
I think he wanted Helena Bonham Carter to play Johnny Depp playing all the roles
That would have been a better film. Snyder screws up every comic he touches.
Pretty sure you're confusing him with Michael Joseph Jackson being considered to play every role.
You're confused, Michael Jackson was actually slated for every role
Broken saint A stop motion puppet of a undead Helen Bonham Carter playing Johnny Depp playing every character as well as most of the scenery and props.
Fun Fact:
David Hayter [known for being the voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear franchise] wrote a scriptment for Watchmen, though he set it in modern times. The filmmakers must've liked it because he still has a writing credit [which means they used enough of it].
Anyway, Alan Moore once said that Hayter's version was the closest he thought anyone could get to adapting Watchmen. Which is like...the most positive thing I think I've heard from him, despite being a totally neutral statement.
The Killing Joke animation deserves the Caravan of Garbage treatment.
B. Catão Definitely
It was truly garbage
That film was so disappointing. Way more than Watchmen.
@Bea r the first 20 minutes of the movie is a made up story they added just about batgirl and batman and her have sex it dosent fit in the story and ruins the rest of the movie
@Bea r because it's garbage
this movie made me realise that whilst zac snyder isnt a great story teller, he is an amazing visual director
True. He's really good at dissecting a grand singular event and putting focus on the iconic elements in it. He shows you details that you'll remember years down the line.
Why do people say stuff like that... you know movies have writers, right?
David Hayter and Alex Tse were the story tellers... it's just the directors job to translate that story to the visual medium, which is exactly what Snyder does, and does well. If you have a problem with Man of Steel, blame Goyer and Nolan as they were the writers. If you have a problem with BvS, Blame Goyer and Terrio.... SNYDER DOES NOT WRITE THESE STORIES. Idiots don't even understand how the industry works.
True, but I don't think his visual style, while fantastic, suits a story like Watchmen. He portrays the characters as being way too superhuman and the action is filmed in a way to make it look less grounded. It doesn't really work well with the story Allan Moore told. I'd rather he took more liberties with the property and made an adaptation with changes that better suited his style of filmmaking and personal philosophy. As the video suggests, there are plenty of changes to the source material he wanted to make but didn't. Would be interested in seeing that alternate universe version of the film, even if it was overall worst than the original comic.
Samur/Aye Not to be that guy, but I don’t think you fully grasp how movies work either. While it’s true not all directors write screenplays, and Zach Snyder doesn’t write his own, the screenplay is the element with the least respect given to it when it comes to a film. Some directors adhere very closely to the screenplay, some directors throw the whole thing out entirely. Some directors have a hand in the screenplay some don’t. In the end, the director has final call on literally every element of the film. This is how Zach Snyder damaged Man of Steel. The screenplay for Man of Steel isn’t god awful, but it all gets mangled in the edit. If the scenes had been placed in chronological order, the movie would have been a lot better. The constant flashbacks mess with the movie’s flow and also the movie answers the question “will Clark be Superman” before it even asks it. Zach Snyder also should have known to either cut the Pa Kent telling Clark to hide his powers or given that enough screen time to explore this version of Superman, but he didn’t. Zach Snyder had control over the editing of that film and he mangled it. Because a director has final say in the final version a film, barring studio interference, the movie exists in the form it does because of directorial choices, and yes that includes the screenplay. If the screenplay sucks and the director leaves the screenplay as it is, that’s the director’s fault, since they should have known better. It’s the same if the screenplay is great and the director mangled it. Zach Snyder would be a fantastic cinematographer, but he can’t seem to wrap his head around how to actually tell a story.
@@SA80TAGE I generally agree. The problems with Snyder's films are usually in the script. And although he has a couple of screenwriting credits, it seems that what he does is suggest ideas, then the actual writer does the script. A lot of problems with BvS are due to the writing, not to the ideas (just pay attention to Luthor's dialog and wonder how _anyone_ could have made it work). In some of Snyder's films he's arguably emphasised the visuals at the expense of the story, but when I saw BvS I was actually surprised at how toned-down it was. I expected it to be a lot more spectacular.
With Man of Steel, I think the main problem is lack of balance in the script. For a start, it needed to lighten up in the middle, to give the audience a chance to relax before the bombastic action recommenced. Also, the final fight should really have had more human interest - it fell into "blockbuster movie syndrome" where it was spectacular but dull.
You should definitely do the animated “The Killing Joke” film
I absolutely need to hear masos take on that garbage joke of a film
@@genghiskhanxxx5276 Yeah that adaptation was hugely disappointing.
@@Axolotl_Mischief I was really looking forward to it but as soon as batman and batgirl have sex I was like wtf were they thinking
The scenes that were taken right from the comic itself was really good but all the extra shit that they added like the heavy Batgirl storyline and the fact that her and Bats had sex really ruined it from being a great animated film.
@@westnile21 the scenes from the comic felt a bit rushed I thought, which can easily be blamed on them spending half the film on the batgirl story

I find it a shame how no one mentions how the blowing up the cities hits so much harder in the comics because the backstory is always told through the newstand which feels like just a framing device for the whole series until at the end you see the corpses and realise you actually cared about them even though they were fairly inconsequential characters you'd probably forget to even mention if you were telling someone else the plot.
I know they couldn't have made that work in the movie, but I honestly just didn't feel the same sort of drop in the gut hearing about the deaths of multiple cities when I know there's no connection to anyone in those cities.
I actually kind of prefer the squid for that reason, the squid leaves identifiable corpses and scenery so the showing of the newstand can hit home, blowing up the entire city wouldn't. It may be a stretch believability wise, but the whole scene in the comics sticks with me in a way that the movie doesn't.
The squid also works better narratively than the bomb. The reason Veidt's plan worked was because not only did the squid create an otherworldly threat that humanity could unite against, it also implanted memories and visions into the minds of survivors. It also adds even more ambiguity as to whether Rorschach's journal is taken seriously by the public, because to the people affected by the squid's psychic waves, *the aliens are very very real.*
Trying to frame Dr Manhattan for the bombing of New York doesn't work because he is by all means an American-made threat. He was literally marketed with the tagline "the Superman exists, and he's American". Even if people truly did believe he attacked New York, that'd just be even worse optics for America. It'd just be further proof that America can't be trusted since they can't even control their own creations.
Quick correction: Rorshach's mask actually *did* change in the original comic, because it had been made using scientific techniques learned from Dr. Manhattan.
Manhattan made a dress with the material. It was supposed to be for Kitty Genovese but as she was killed, Walter ended up with it. Eventually he learned how to cut it using heat.
Ozymandias in the book: Humanity is bringing itself to the edge of extinction because of our drive to create an "other". My plan is to create a "bigger other", one far more existentially threatening than any human, in order to force humanity to cooperate.
Movie Ozymandias: Uh, what if I uh, fuckin' uh, made Dr. Manhattan the bigger other??? Why wouldn't this simply position the USA, who created Dr. Manhattan, as the bigger other, you might ask? Who cares!
the US wouldn't be the bigger other because new york exploded lol
Alan Moore has had his name removed from the credits of every adaptation of his work, not just Watchmen.

WITH ENDLESS OPTIONS FOR RENEWAL
It's so interesting coming back to this after finding out that WB wanted to change a lot about the movie and Zack only did it because he didn't want a worse version made. He was trying to put comic elements back in. Weird how we got that wrong assuming WB gave a shit about their comics. 🤷♂️
11 bang bang
Yeah but, remember how when the movie lost money, Zack Snyder changed his tune completely. Maybe not about Watchmen, but his film body of work for DC has been two parallels: him getting more and more control over every aspect of the films he makes, and the movies being less faithful, and shittier as a result.
Dr. Manhattan's scene in Vietnam walking through fields of rice earned this movie the working title Blue Harvest, which was the working title for Star Wars.
I love this movie, but the single greatest rub is that Alan Moore would NEVER call Ozymandias the bad guy. Their all the bad guys.
The guy who did Rorschach is one of the best movie character adaptations along with heath Ledger's joker and hugh Jackman wolverine

Nope, The Incredibles is Watchmen for kids.

@@NameGoesWhere0 How many scenes did he have compared to putting capes on everyone? Think buddy, think.
When you’re in the position to sell the movie rights to a story you created, you should take care of being involved in the movies production, otherwise you can’t expect the adaptation to resemble what you want it to be like. I like the graphic novel and the movie and I think as long as you don’t try to see the movie less as a direct adaptation and more as a interpretation, they both got their strengths. You just can’t perfectly convert a book (especially a comic book) into a movie if it isn’t written with this change of media in mind.
He doesn't have a vision for what it would be like because he's insistent that adaptation of his work is impossible.
Moore is probably most upset about the rights situation because DC promised him and Gibbons the Watchmen rights when the comics fell out of print.
They then used it to launch the modern graphic novel industry so it never fell out of print.
Akira Toriyama could tell you that from first-hand experience.
It's a mistake, Moore doesn't have the rights. WB/DC Comics own Watchmen, Moore has just the right to a cut as creator and he rejected it for the movie leaving all the credits to the artist.
Even if you see the film as its own creation it is still fucking stupid. Rorschach a clearly demented fascist is portrayed as the hero and thought of the World uniting especially the Soviets when supposedly an American hero/ government agent killed millions of people all over the planet is simply laughable. It would be like if Navy Seal Team 6 flew over new York and Moscow, dropping atomic bombs and the Russians will be like "hey let's join forces with America because it is not at all their fault."
Watchmen as a comic was revolutionary and game-changing. Watchmen as a film was ok.
2 caravan of garbage suggestions:
1) An old star wars game or the Emperor's resurrection in Dark Empire for this film or Jedi: Fallen Order.
2) Hulked Out Heroes from Marvel for She Hulk or something.

Watchmen was basically Moore's savage rebuttal/parody of Ditko's objectivism, and Snyder, being an objectivist himself, could not help but give it the exact opposite inflection from Moore's writing.
Alan Moore created Rorschach to mock Ayn Rand objectivist thinking.
And just like every film he's made, Snyder completely missed the point and tried to make him the hero of the piece.
I love how Rorschach screams "Give me back my face". My favorite minutia to the mask being his identity.
I liked "Sweeney Todd".
I like Snyder's adaptation of "Watchmen" very much. Did not expect to. I was nuclear-level skeptical. But I was pleasantly surprised.
Except I believe pretty strongly he should have gone with the squid. If done correctly that could have been a remarkable image.
I hated Sweeney Todd so much. I was expecting a horror movie, not a musical
Ye, i never understood why everyone minded the squid. The idea of humanity uniting against aliens is a pretty damn accessible concept - i mean, look at movies like independence day. It's hella easy to understand

Zack Snyder only makes a good movie when he's got an amazing storyboard, AKA comic, to follow. He should have been a visual director, and that's it. The squid ending makes more sense because it's supposed to bring the Earth together against a common outside threat. If Dr. Manhattan, America's greatest weapon, is the cause of the destruction, why would the USSR want to unite with us? That would just drive all the other countries to form an alliance against the US.

Personally, shotgunning the novel and then the movie was the perfect experience for me. I was going to skip the movie altogether, but a friend of mine was like "dude, read the book." I did, then saw the movie in theaters some weeks later and was blown away. Yeah, it's not perfect, but as a moving representation of a static comic of God-tier proportions, I think it's a stellar experience.
I first saw this movie when I was like 15 and just getting back into comics so I had no prior conception of what Watchmen should be. Instead of thinking, "this sucks compared to the comic" my reaction was "this is amazing! I can't wait to read the original". Which is kind of funny because Alan Moore hates having his work adapted but this movie led me to his comics and now he's my favorite writer.
I actually saw the film first, loved it, then read the comic. And while I prefer the comic, I understand just how tricky a book it is to adapt, and while flawed, I think the film is a good adaptation. As for the squid thing, my beef is less that they swapped it out with Dr. Manhattan and more that Ozymandia's total genocide doesn't have nearly the same impact. We're desensitized to SFX, so a big blue explosion that just disintegrates everyone is nowhere near as effective as actually seeing the bodies littered in the streets.
None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me!
You know the squid is a reaction to Regan’s “if a threat from another planet threatened us we’d come together right fast”. You know that RIGHT!
Zack Snyder didn't even understand what he was adapting.
Finally a comment I agree with
Zach Snyder loved the bloodshed too much. The violence was too macabre for me to watch all the way through. Apparently that's something that differed significantly from the graphic novel where blood was used more sparingly to hit home the brutality of the violence

This movie is one of the best methods of adaptation I've ever seen. Like, seriously, I cannot imagine a better way to shorten Watchmen into two-and-a-half hours, keeping most of the amazing visuals, and nearly every plot point than this.
However...the themes and characters were hit so hard in the process of adaptation that it brings the whole film so far down. So much of the nuance, point, and, frankly, edge was sanded off of all these characters, especially Rorshach and Ozymandious. And really, it feels like whoever wrote or edited this film didn't realize that the film as a whole was supposed to say that any kind of superheroism is an eventual negative for everyone. I'm not sure if Snyder wrote this movie, but a lot of it's flaws (namely, not understandingthe source material) would follow with him into his later films.
There is an even more accurate version of the film in the “Ultimate Cut,” you get to see all the scenes at the newspaper stand as well as the entire “Tale of the Black Freighter” story inter spliced at the points where it was in the graphic novel. It’s a little long though, 3 hours and 35 minutes.

The better way is to not shorten it at all.
If I remember correctly, Alan Moore didn't sell the rights to DC flat out. The rights were suppose to revert to him after it goes out of print. He trusted them and didn't get a lawyer to read the fine print or to advise him. Watchmen was a huge success and never went out of print .
This was the first rated R film I saw in the theater. I loved it, but my dad fell asleep 15 minutes into the film and didn’t wake up until it was over

Brandon Gomez Agreed, this would probably be one of his very few good films.
Scott Summers First of all - Not arguing on merits of cinematography, though those arguments do exist.
In the 80s, Watchmen mainstreamed the deconstructive approach to superheroes. By making them darker, more human, and openly broken, Alan Moore radically change the way they were depicted. Zack Snyder took on Watchmen as his first superhero movie and we have had to deal with his Kroger Brand/Pseudo-deep characters in almost ever other movie in this genre. What is up with Snyder and these extended cuts?
@@carboy101 his vision keeps getting chopped in favour of more movie showings per day, cost-cutting policies and critic-pleasing pacing constraints.
Dr0pkidd well WB keeps chopping down his cuts so his full versions end up on the home releases. He originally wanted the full version so he has the animated Tales of the Black Freighter made and intercut with the live action, then he felt it didn’t quite work and was too long for the theatrical cut so he took it out, then WB cut out scenes in addition to that to get the theatrical cut. He included his “directors cut” which is the one he likes the best and then later released the ultimate cut for fans who wanted the full thing even though it wasn’t his intended version.
I feel like its a bit of a dishonest simplification to just say "Alan Moore sold the rights so he shouldnt complain." He was under a contract that would return the rights to the characters to Moore a certain amount of time after the comic was out of print. Watchmen then became the second ever comic (the first was The Dark Knight Returns the same year) compiled and resold into a "Graphic Novel," so Moore never got his rights back.

It’s the only way to include all the content and not feel like a bloated mess.
IMO the over the top action scenes, the diluted down version of Rorshach and the obviously evil Ozymandias are hints that Snyder never understood Watchmen, which is why its not a good adaption.
Synder has been on record saying he doesn't like comics and hated characters like Superman cause they weren't edgy and dark enough. And that's perfectly fine of course, like what you want. Watchmen was the first comic he picked up that he liked because he said it wasn't afraid to go dark, which is why he wanted to adapt it.
But he failed to realise that Watchmen is supposed to be a deconstruction of comic book heroes, not just an edgy retelling. To put it simply, you're not supposed to think Rorschach is cool (which Synder obviously thinks, given how he portrayed him in the movie). Rorschach is a homophobic, racist, mentally unstable lunatic who thinks the whole world is evil even though he's worse than most people. And this goes for all the characters in Watchmen. Night Owl is an unfit, impotent man who can't get it up without giving into his addiction, ie. beating up criminals. The comedian is a self-righteous asshole who is completely amoral and thinks the whole world is a joke. Dr Manhattan is a person given actual superpowers and as a result, he has lost all his humanity.
Watchmen is meant to be a dark mirror to the tropes and ideals promoted in mainstream comic books. What type of people would actually dress up like its Halloween and beat people up in the name of justice? The answer is probably people with severe mental and social problems.
How this differs from Zack's version is subtle but at the same time significant. Watchmen is not meant to be sexy. Watchmen is not meant to have cool action scenes. Watchmen characters aren't meant to be cool. Synder translated everything onto the big screen, even the exact same dialogue from the book, all except the actual message of the story. As a stand-alone movie? Yeah, it's fine I guess. As an adaption? It's bad.
Conor Owens very well said
If Alan Moore doesn't want his comics made into films, he probably shouldn't have sold the film rights to Hollywood.
Well, he didn't sell anything. He never owned the rights in the first place. That's how it works when you work for Marvel and DC.
@@Carabas72 Yeah, that's right. My mistake.
Rorschach is so amazing in this it skews my feelings on the movie up a couple grades. The comedian as well. As a whole it's visually slick, with some great performances and solid action, but a bit flat for how strong the source material is.
It's literally the same except for the squid... You never even read the comic lmao
@@Digger-Nick Not at all. This video clearly explains the differences and why those changes don't work making the movie an inferior version of the story
@@Digger-Nick Clearly you havent either
@@blyzer7373 What changes don't work?
"Visually slick" is a bad thing for an adaptation of a comic like Watchmen.
And like everyone else said, this movie's a mere shadow of the comic.
Portraying the Watchmen as actual superheroes totally undermines the entire point of Moore's story. Totally.
I’m still 90% sure that Jackie Earl Haley is a serial killer. It just sounds like such a serial killer name. Like Brian Earl Spillner.
Great reference a year later, God bless you.
Zack Snyder thought Rorschach was the hero of the story.
Let's be honest: the *superhero fatigue* current audiences feel would've made Zack Snyder's _Watchmen_ movie a HUGE hit if it was released today.
Just sayin'
Naw.
Or woul've killed it on arrival
Forgot to hide that glorious fake "D" at 9:14 LMAO
I started bumping the Sweeney Todd soundtrack when this month started and am most likely rewatching it in the next week or so so yes
You have some Todd-heads 😂
I love it too!
This is one of the top 5 comic book adaptations of all time
Settle down, now.
Settle down for what? Its the truth!
Truth.. My opinion #1
@@SAVANTI711 Thats right!!!
Alan Moore is also a magician, a part of me thinks that every time someone does an adaptation of his works he cast spells on the people and directors of each movie that curse them to never have successful movies.
He's a wizard, not a magician.
@@phillipbotter6470 speaking of fan boys...
I mean most Zach Snyder movies are financially successful so idk what you mean
This was successful though; unless of course you're comparing it to children's movies like Avengers or Justice League.
He does. But let's be real, magic and sorcery is bullshit either way.
People keep using the word 'faithful' to describe this movie. It is a 'literal' adapation, not a faithful one. It it not faithful to the tone, themes or style of the original comic. It is the simply the story and imagery from the comic, that stays faithful to what Snyder wants out of a comic book movie, not to what The Watchmen was truly about.
7:00 So those are supposed to be Bruce Wayne's parents? In an alley with Issues of Batman randomly stapled to the wall?
That‘s why he became Batman. he thought those comics looked cool and wanted to make it real.
It’s *supposed* to be but it’s not. Anyone with a single brain cell whose read the comic (or even paying slight attention) should know they’re not in the same universe.
Love you guys's videos, but one point of inaccuracy needs clarification: Moore and Gibbons did not "sell their rights rights to Watchmen in to 80s". The deal was that if Watchmen ever went out of print, the rights reverted back to them.
This movie isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. Probably my favorite Zack Snyder movie.
A rather low bar, admittedly.
Snyder has said that he told WB not to make the film bc they were going to change a lot about it, but they were going to make it anyway so he decided to make it just so he could make it as close as possible, because he’s a big fan of the comic.
I will always love this movie because of how my life changed directly after seeing this movie. Had nothing to do with the movie, but it reminds me of it.
03:25 "It is a parody of batman". Parody means "laugh with" or "joke about something you love", satire means "laugh at" or "ridicule". This is satire, not parody.
I loved the comic and i really love the movie as well.
This film is a good example of how a hack director can stay faithful to the source material, but still get the tone completely wrong.
Yawn 😴
@@Crunch_Buttsteak Yeah, but wasn't it kewl whan Rawshark punched those guys in slow motion with his kung-fu skillz!1!

I liked watchmen. While it was long and involved, I thought the scope and ambition of the story is great and is rare in movies these days . The movie was beautifully and stylishly filmed and the action was well done. One of my favorites.
The main thing with your criticism of the "other worldly elements' that bothers me is the whole thing with rorschachs mask moving. In the comic his mask is different in literally every frame.
Rewatched it recently, actually still holds up pretty well imo, the writing fitted Zack’s style
I downloaded “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning” by Smashing Pumpkins to SoundCloud and I still listen to it to this day. I feel like this song belongs in Watchmen, Arkham Asylum, Dark Knight, and Arkham City.
I read the comic and then immediately watched the movie, and I was blown away by how accurate the movie is. I really like this movie
It's too bad this was made so damn early in the comic book movie days... NOW it's the time for Watchmen. A trilogy done properly. It would KILL
It needed to be a mini series like Gilliam wanted.
Alan Moore actually insisted his name be taken off the adaption.
12:17 Otacon the Patriots didn’t let me use my Watchmen ending
This movie is a Masterpiece.
Shane Blackburn super facts
Eh, it was alright
Zack Snyder is incapable of creating a masterpiece.

When Ozymandius defeats the assassin in the lobby there’s a cut where the way his hand waves in front of the gun it’s in a way that would block the bullet. So he’s probably tried that move many times over the years to, of course have it work when it really counts
