This video saved me money and the environment (at least a little)! I was looking to see how to remove the microwave from above the stove and when I noticed how easy it was to replace the diode I decided to order a new diode and fix it myself. What a great instructional video! I hope that one day this video clip makes it into a movie.
8years later in 2023, this video is spot on, step by step, nothing extra , and right to the point! It took a few months only because we forgot to order a new diode at the same time we ordered the magnetron. Otherwise, would have done it in one day. Thank you again!
Absolutely perfect video. A+! This might be the only video I’ve ever seen where I didn’t have at least one critique for it. No excess talking and everything done using best practices. Well done!

Christian, excellent video. With your accurate directions I replace the magnetron, capacitor, diode and fuse. Along with filters and a tray I spent $123 instead of $300 - $400 for a new microwave. From start to finish 1.5 hours including cabinet cleaning. Thank you!

Very clear and precise instruction, congrats! One negative comment: you NEVER EVER work on electrical and mechanical parts with rings and bacelets, specially metallic ones; I've witnessed too many burnt fingers, cuts and shocked (both figurative and electrically speaking) people, you may even risk your life.

Great Video, very concise and informative. Good Job. Now I have to determine if the price of the Magnetron and Diode is cost effective to replace or get a new Microwave. Thanks Christian, you make the repair look easy with you Great instructions.
Everything worked, but the mag would not turn on. I did the easy checks first: the mag-circuit (diode, capacitor, fuse, mag filament, connection to transform HV coil). There were no improper shorts or open circuits. The diode tested well. Then I checked the transformer primary for continuity or shorts. No problem. The HV secondary was 150 ohms to the case. No problem! I suspected that the door interlock that controls the mag was faulty. Now, the struggle began. They snapped-in when connected, and I could not remove them with ordinary tools (needle-nose pliers). I concluded that they were not made to be easily removed. I tried to remove the interlock switches with the leads still connected to them. They were held by plastic retainers that I could not pry out of the way. UA-cam has several videos on the magnetrons and other big components. What we amateurs need is advice on how to remove those snapped-in connecting lugs. That, to me, is the hard part.

Couple things I wish I knew: 1. Even if you have a multimeter, there is a good chance you won’t be able to diagnose which or both are wrong. Spend the ~$120 and get both the magnetron and the diode. 2. Watch the whole video. The reassembly, for instance: it is important to make sure the tabs slide in so that it is flush. I assembled the top three times before I understood why nothing was lining up. 3. Do yourself a favor and test the thing AND clean the bottom before re-installing into your cabinet.

Amazing video. Where would you suggest in order those parts. I called whirlpool and they would sell me the parts. Orginally a lady said I could buy the megatron from her department then I had to transfer to another. Then someone else told me I couldn't. So any references you have would be amazing.
Nice video.i have Kenmore 721-85063010 model. It’s not heating and buzzing. Lights are working, vent blowers working good, time showing perfect and turn table is also turning. Do you think magnetron is the only problem or also could be some other problem. Please let me know.
I have Kenmore 621-85063010 over the counter model. Every things working good except not heating and buzzing sound. Do you thing by changing magnetron it will be back and do you suggest also to install a new diode as well?

How do you know it's not the capacitor or line fuse? Or for that matter... how do you know its not just the diode or just the magnetron? Why do you assume it's both??? I have this microwave (HS2 version) and it made a popping sound when I started it, and now it does not heat. It's also louder than it used to be. What makes it pop and what makes it hum now? Would those issues narrow down what parts are possibly needed. I don't want to replace the wrong ones.
Hi. I do have this same ovwr the range Whirlpool WMH73L20AS-0 that starts heating after first minute. I was wondering if there is a way to reset that problem or if I have to replace some parts. Within the first 60 seconds it sounds like it is working,it is turning but not heating. Everything works perfect after that minute.

Very detailed and well instructed video. Ours is a Kenmore and it looks just like that Whirlpool you got. It just stopped working and I smelled something burnt electrical inside. The light turns on when you open the door, only the two dots in the clock/timer is lit up, but nothing else wants to work. What could be wrong? Thank you very much.

Have you discharged an LG microwave capacitor? The model no is LMV1683ST. It is not easy to reach the terminals plus one side does not have extra or uncover terminal. So I can't find how to short it. Also it is been unplugged for two days, but don't want to take the risk. Any suggestion? Thanks

did you test the parts you replaced, or did you just know they were bad? Do you replace the diode and magnetron always in a pair or was there some criteria to warrant this set? did you not replace the capacitor or why not since the three seem to work as a unit.. I am just trying to figure out if I need to replace one of these components or if I need to do all three or just the diode and magnetron... Can you explain the thought process in deciding these for me? Thanks! Awesome video by the way!

I have this same microwave, and it has a problem as follows: if I try to cook something that requires more than about 8-10 minutes, the magnetron seems to cut out (I can tell because the normal 60Hz hum goes away). After about a minute, the magnetron kicks in again. I suspect the magnetron is overheating on a long cooking cycle, the high limit thermostat does its thing, and after a minute the magnetron cools down enough to start up again. Can I assume that replacing the (overheating?) magnetron will fix this problem? Or is it possible the high limit thermostat, or maybe some other component, is defective? Any advice will be much appreciated!

You won't get the scrumptious hot dinner if the magnetron of your oven isn't operating properly because it produces the microwave radiation that cooks the food. My GE Profile Microwave worked for about 5-7 seconds then shut off. Further exam revealed burning/sparking in HV Inverter/Transformer. Digital continuity checked OK for all door switches, primary thermostat, shut off fuse, etc. Replaced Transformer with new part. Everything worked fine except 'No Microwave Heating'. Next, replaced Magnetron and Relay Switch on the circuit board. Everything worked fine except 'No Microwave Heating'. Magnetron humming seems normal! Cleaned mica wave board inside of unit, no sparking here. Can anyone advise what the problem may be. Again, everything worked fine including settings for time, power levels, clock, etc. when started up except 'No Microwave Heating'. Last resort before dropping out to the curb for the landfill! Any ideas greatly appreciated! HELP! Show less Reply

So after my microwave made a very loud grinding noise. it still comes on, but all i hear is that buzzing sound.... I know the Magnetron is still working because I test that by putting in a simple chocolate treat to see if it was heating. and yes it is heating. but its very quite now. like normally you turn on a microwave, you get the buzz, then it like ramps up, or a fan or something comes on, that is not happening. And Ideas?

Thank you for this excellent video that shows exactly why our landfills are full of fairly new, perfectly good appliances... that are so time consuming and expensive to fix that it is literally cheaper to just buy a new one @ $200 to $250 and replace it. There is actually LESS labor and time and work to replace it than to fix it. As usual, a $2 or $5 or $10 part--and shitty design and engineering--costs consumers hundreds of dollars and destroys the planet in the process. Fvck all appliance manufacturers. I still have a stove from the 1940s that works just fine... and a Kenmore washer and dryer from the 1980s that are still functioning properly... but virtually every appliance I've bought in the past 20 to 25 yrs has been replaced and thrown in the landfill. Nothing but "high tech" garbage.

He never talks about how he diagnosed it. Not heating he says. Well yeah sure but tells us why you chose those parts and not a million other things that could have caused it to not heat!
Absolutely perfect video. A+! This might be the only video I’ve ever seen where I didn’t have at least one critique for it. No excess talking and everything done using best practices. Well done!

Sir you saved me over $700 with this video. I am forever grateful and so is my family. It was a struggle living without a microwave...lol
This is the absolute best. You should be #1 for this type of instructive video.

Perfect angles to all parts and great video
That, to me, is the hard part.
very easy to understand step by step and very informative ..

Fantastic video, thanks!
Couple things I wish I knew:
Do I NEED to replace diode when replacing magnetron? Also if I only replace the magnetron should I still discharge the capacitor?
Always stay safe

Amazing video. Where would you suggest in order those parts. I called whirlpool and they would sell me the parts. Orginally a lady said I could buy the megatron from her department then I had to transfer to another. Then someone else told me I couldn't. So any references you have would be amazing.
Nice video.i have Kenmore 721-85063010 model. It’s not heating and buzzing. Lights are working, vent blowers working good, time showing perfect and turn table is also turning. Do you think magnetron is the only problem or also could be some other problem. Please let me know.
Some diagnostics would be nice. How to determine if they are bad.

Nice video. Will the new magnetron make a tinging noise like the metal fins are expanding and contracting?

Very detailed and well instructed video. Ours is a Kenmore and it looks just like that Whirlpool you got. It just stopped working and I smelled something burnt electrical inside. The light turns on when you open the door, only the two dots in the clock/timer is lit up, but nothing else wants to work. What could be wrong? Thank you very much.

Before replacing parts how do you know it's a bad magnetron and/or diode and not something else?
Have you discharged an LG microwave capacitor? The model no is LMV1683ST. It is not easy to reach the terminals plus one side does not have extra or uncover terminal. So I can't find how to short it. Also it is been unplugged for two days, but don't want to take the risk. Any suggestion? Thanks

Hold on. You always give the same answer. Which is not an answer.
ApplianceVideo.com Why not just answer the damn question???
did you test the parts you replaced, or did you just know they were bad? Do you replace the diode and magnetron always in a pair or was there some criteria to warrant this set? did you not replace the capacitor or why not since the three seem to work as a unit.. I am just trying to figure out if I need to replace one of these components or if I need to do all three or just the diode and magnetron... Can you explain the thought process in deciding these for me?

Dan Sloan Any luck? The boss (wife) just told me ours isn't heating up. Everything else works.
It's likely either the door switch, Magnetron, or diode. I'm replacing all there on mine and calling it a day. Exact same symptoms.

HELP!

And Ideas?

Good chance that it may be overheating so the fuse shuts it down. Probably needs a fan which is in the section near the magnetron to keep it cool.

I have Maytag microwave(same as the whirlpool) that is a year and a half old and the magnetron could possibly be toast already? Unbelievable.

Should have removed your ring while working in that environment. You could easily shock yourself! Otherwise good teaching video.

Are you serious!! Complaining for his ring? What about his watch? I guess you weren’t paying attention when he even discharged the capacitors. Pay attention to important issues, because those will make the difference between success or disaster.

Did I miss the diagnosis part? lol
Also my unit also buzzes when trying to heat

He never talks about how he diagnosed it. Not heating he says. Well yeah sure but tells us why you chose those parts and not a million other things that could have caused it to not heat!
This guy replaces the who shebang with no diagnosis of which part is the culprit.
Pretty disappointing.
Your title said "Diagnostic."
You didn't diagnose it, you replaced it.
I didn't see any diagnostics at all. Any trained monkey can swap parts.
Absolutely perfect video. A+! This might be the only video I’ve ever seen where I didn’t have at least one critique for it. No excess talking and everything done using best practices. Well done!
