electronicsNmore Hello, thank you for an excellent video. I'm however having a weird microwave issue and 3 techs have been unable to help. The whole microwave (lights, display, power ) will go off, come back on randomly days later and run until it blows fuse. Changed cap, magnetron, door switches, really only thing left is control board. Any insight? Thank you. Scott
Amazing tutorial thank you! Before l order the tools... my combi oven sounds like it contains a crazy hamster on a rattling metal wheel since my son slammed its door (sent to bed with no supper!) I read about 300 questions but cant find my problem though some mention slammed doors. Im hoping you could suggest a starting point rather than my tackling any tasks unnecessarily as this oven is really heavy and cumbersome? Love your voice in the vids too by the way :)
My microwave quit heating anything so I went through the parts and found a bad thermal and diode. I replaced both, plugged it in and immediately the fan ran on a very low speed, almost as if it was sensing heat (like an oven on under it). It's only 45 degrees in my garage so it shouldn't come on. Also, it still wouldn't heat. Checked the two parts I replaced and found the diode was bad again. Any suggestions what would be causing this? I followed your video and found nothing else seeming to be bad with it.
As someone with no experience testing a microwave, your video is clear and concise and demonstrates that it doesn't require a licensed repairman. It requires a little common sense and attention to safety. Thank you for your effort.
@rayaidanmanansala2456 its not just tricky, its potentially lethal. That capacitor holds 2000 volts, if you touch that when its fully charged its extremely dangerous.
Update: I replaced all three parts you explained. Magnetron was burned at the connector but tested good, diode was the issue. I purchased a capacitor and diode together and old capacitor was in spec but new capacitor was better in spec. Microwave is much quieter and heats quicker on foods. Thank you for your videos and giving me the confidence to do this. $70 new parts not used. Praying for 10 more years now. 😆
I was a microwave engineer and found this video absolutely correct. I would like to add that keeping the inside of the oven clean is essential. A splash of gravy or food left inside will carry on cooking and eventually glow and burn through the paint to expose bare metal which will eventually destroy the machine.
Glad you enjoyed my video. :-) I forgot to mention the waveguide cover, and touching up bare metal using microwave oven cavity paint. Thanks for watching!
My mom's microwave works great but makes an insanely loud sound. It sounds like a magnetron (electrical) and not like a fan (slapping). Is there a way to fix the sound or do I need to replace the magnetron?
@@MichaelGustavsonArchitect years ago when microwave ovens cost six times more than today, I used to replace lots of magnetrons and other components but not anymore because they are mass produced, the ovens are so cheap to buy and last a lot longer.
I've watched MANY instructional videos on repairing a variety of items, even made a couple of them myself, and I have never seen a more clear and understandable one than this one! Thanks for sharing this and my compliments on a job superbly done.

I can’t thank you enough . I’m pretty good at fixing almost anything . This video helped me save my $250 microwave by diagnosing a bad door switch . $6 for 2 of them on Amazon . I hope you make some money on this video. My friend is eating crow after this fix. Very good quality video and narrative. Thank you so much !! Ken Bordner
I started in the microwave business back when Litton first entered the retail market I believe in the early 1970's. While not a defect or a repair problem I want to point out the most common error I see people making virtually all the time, this mistake is widespread on videos on UA-cam. When consumer microwaves first came out the manufacturers spent millions trying to get the most even 'pattern', or distribution of microwaves in the cooking area. Then some companies gave up and started putting turntables in their microwaves, just about all followed fairly quickly. The idea was to move the food around instead of the microwaves themselves, these days they don't seem to even try to make them cook evenly, depending on the turntable to take care of it. Now the important part: I see people put something in the microwave and put it in the center of the turntable, DON'T DO THAT! The center doesn't move around, it sits there in the same spot, if you have a hot spot or cold spot, its going to be in the center of the turntable. If you have a single small item, a donut, a cup of coffee etc, put it towards the edge, never put anything in the middle if you can avoid it since it defeats the entire purpose of the turntable. Sometimes you have a larger item and you can't avoid the center, but usually in that case you can take it out and change what part is in the center for the rest of the cooking. Another handy tip, if heating up something that takes up a lot of room on the plate, arrange the food around the edges of the plate, leaving the center empty and put that empty spot in the middle, its like you are making it in a ring mold, like a cake with a hole in the middle. In all the years I was in the business I sponsored and attended many microwave cooking schools, this is the #1 handiest tip and most common error when I see someone using a microwave.
Makes sense not to put things in the middle of a turntable-based oven. If I may add my two cents, I have an Amana RR-800 and I had to do a little repair on it a few years ago. Specifically, the stirring antenna wasn't spinning, so obviously the cooking action wasn't what it should have been. Thought it could be a faulty stirring motor, but it turned out that it didn't use a motor for the antenna at all. The foam lining inside the oven was being used to help direct airflow from the blower in a way that not only kept the magetron cool but also got the antenna to spin. Over the years, that foam deteriorated and was permitting too much airflow to leak out. Replaced the rotted foam with foam weatherstripping from the hardware store and it worked to restore the stirring action.
This presentation is excellent in all respects: communication, filming, clarity, thoroughness and detail. I can't imagine finding a better troubleshooting analysis on microwaves.

In about 6 or 7 out of 10 “repairs” I had success with a different approach. I remove all switches and clean them thoroughly with quick evaporating contacts cleaning spray. Sometimes an old toothbrush or compressed air needed or helpful. Do the same on all other electrical connections and snap-together or push-to-lock connectors. Clean (or replace fuse). Using a blow dryer I go over all wires & components. No multimeter. No component by component testing. Just a “deep cleaning” of the innards. 6/7 out of 10 REVIVAL. This video is PERFECT for the 3/4 out of 10 when deep-clean does NOT fix the microwave. Great tutorial. Not needed in about 60% of the cases where MW malfuctioning. GREAT tutorial for the other 40% ish
OK. I'm pretty handy at all repairs, but sometimes you just have to go to the experts. My hat is off to you. You sure know your stuff. Everything was exactly as you said. The testing helped me discover that all I needed was a $15 diode and nothing else. Saved me hundreds of dollars. You are the best of all the microwave videos that I watched. Period.
I like how you take the time to explain how each part works and how to test the part. This video is worth saving if you want to fix your own microwave and save money. Start collecting parts from microwaves people throw away.

thanks for the great troubleshooting video. Just saved me a bunch of money and time. Microwave would start and turn off after 1 second. Took it apart, discharged the capacitor, noticed it was a little dusty and greasy so I cleaned it up, including contacts. Plugged it in, tried again, and same thing. Discharged capacitor and did a resistance test on it. It was shorted, 4 ohms and dropping across the contacts. Fortunately, had spare capacitor from previous microwave. Replaced cap, plugged it in, and this time no power. Checked fuse - it was blown. Replaced fuse, plugged in, clock lit up, put cup of water in it, turned it on for 30 seconds and it worked! Thank you very much.
I have watched how to videos on repairing everything from dishwashers to car problems. This video is by far the best. Great knowledge, communication, and filming. Thanks.
I agree with other comments. I have watched probably a thousand repair videos, and this was the best. My problem ended up being the diode. Now it works like a charm.
Thorough material. Thanks to you I diagnosed a faulty switch, replaced it, spent $30 + can-do-it to avoid a $250 replacement microwave + $100 install. Excellent! Two thumbs up!!
I just sent you $20 thru PayPal. The 12V-120V relay was toast and I would never have known how to test to narrow it down. It's back in the cabinet, happy as a microwave can be. Thanks! Oh, and your diagnostic approach was well presented and easy to understand.
That was EXTREMELY nice of you, very generous, and much appreciated. Kudos for this "no stones unturned" thorough video! When there was no power on my microwave, I wasted a ton of time looking at many simplistic videos that stopped saying anything beyond the main fuse. This video goes beyond that. And yes, it was the thermal cut off switch in my case that failed the continuity test and on closer examination had burnt! (No wonder I sensed a plastic burning smell when it went dead). Now I need to order the part. Will come back and update this comment after I fix it and my microwave comes back to life again. But, nevertheless this is a great video! Glad I came across this.
Just wanted to say, I looked through soooo many microwave disassembly vids. This one though most likely saved my life! I wired up the screw driver as directed with the resistor and grounded against the metal. I was also wearing heavy duty rubber gloves, but the handle of the screw driver got very hot and then I did the next terminal.... and it was done. I know that the voltage was bleeding off and I am super thankful I found this because, I actually considered doing it solo first.
Just discovered your channel due to a misbehaving microwave. This is the best laid out, methodical, logical, troubleshooting & repair video I have yet to come across. I haven't cracked open the case on mine yet, but I now know I have a bad capacitor diode and have had for sometime now. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the information beginning at 16:30 of how to check the magnetron. My magnetron tested with high resistance from either lead to the body of the magnetron. Ordered a new magnetron, tested the new one with O.L (open line) in all test. Installed the new one and my microwave is working again. The original magnetron lasted approx 7 years. Your video is the only one of many I viewed that really explains how to check the magnetron. Thanks!😄
Fantastic video. It is more than a microwave testing, it is a class about troubleshooting a microwave. About the diode testing, my meter showed a diode as bad. I then added a 9 volt battery in series with the diode and then the test confirmed that my diode was good. Inverting the polarities on the diode my meter showed voltage crossing the diode in one direction and not crossing the diode in another direction. Any way this video is the best that I ewer saw about troubleshooting a microwave. Congratulations and thanks for posting.
Thank you for the great and comprehensive video! I'd like to share my small experience with others. The fuse in my ten years old AEG Micromat microwave blew up after I heated a cup of coffee and opened the oven door with a rush movement. (At the same moment a 16A automatic switch triggered in the supply line too). Luckily, I found in the internet a service bulletin for AEG/Electrolux microwaves which states: "The fuse may operate (blow) as a result of other component failures within the product but in some cases it may also be possible for the fuse to blow as a result of opening the door via the open button." Exactly this happened by me. I replaced the fuse and the oven is sound again.

This is simply the best step-by-step I ever saw on any appliance. No BS, all excellent info. All sorts of tips about how individual faults can affect various aspects of operation, with pinpoint tests of individual components. (It is also a much-needed tutorial on how to use a DVOM, which is really important for inexperienced users. His tips on the main relay helped me locate a sticking main power relay (stuck closed) that powered the mag as soon as the unit was plugged in. A few stiff raps on the relay and it is working again until my $5 replacement arrives. Save this link in a safe place!

Awesome!!! Had it all together & knew it 'should' work...I saw the part about the thermal cutoff about 1/3 into the video. We felt it was that. Looked at our "b4" pics & that little doodad was *touching* the old magnetron & when we put the new one in it wasn't. Voila! Fixed!! It's an un-replaceable RV micro for an old rig. Your video saved us having to spend $1,000 or more on remodeling & a new micro. YOU ROCK!!!
Thank you. You're video helped me fix my microwave, a thing I didn't really think I could do. Much more than saving on the inconvenience and expense of having someone come to fix it, it was a real thrill to diagnose and fix the problem myself. You've got another subscriber.

I really love the fact that you know how many ovens really are, I've seen just a couple and agree with all that you said and even better, learned very good things in the way. Very good and safer way to discharge the cap, this also could be used for other situations, like old CNCs, have a similar configuration with a high V cap. Thank you.

This was a great video! I decided to play with a 6 yr old Magic Chef microwave oven which suddenly stopped working a few days ago. I bought the proper tools to get the unit open. The upper microswitch which read intermittently faulty on an ohmmeter was the culprit. I removed it temporarily, pushed on the switch push button a few times and put it back in. It worked great following. Thanks!

Thanks for the video! Thoroughly done. One common problem is when there is a terrible screaming and grating noise and then it's gone. Later everything's fine! Sometimes, cleaning the fans shaft seems to have done the trick but later this becomes more frequent and all hell breaks out. All other tests being done, this problem remains and also there's no heating. The magnets are also not cracked! This happens when the magnet/s are freewheeling at their centres, whereas they should be locked. Don't try ANY glues! In a tactile way, try rotating both magnets and even if one is free, you will have to replace the magnetron! Check that the replacements magnets are locked! The replacement magnetron could be ever so slightly larger. Perhaps a design upgrade to help heat dissipation. So tighten the perforated cage tabs and bend the supporting ledge. Don't forget that you will have to include the rubber gasket or make a new one, before re attaching. Be satisfied that the magnetron has nicely clicked into position and secured! There could be some buzzing sound which will subside as the cage sides held together only with metal tabs, should later stabilize after heating/cooling.
Nice and thorough. I can't thank you enough for revisiting the capacitor discharge procedure after each time the microwave was connected to mains again. (Plugged into an outlet for the non-geeks) One thing I would add is a strong caution regarding the magnetron vacuum tube insulator. They used to be made of beryllium oxide and if cracked, gouged, or broken the dust from that is highly toxic if inhaled. Not sure if the insulators are still made of that nasty stuff.
Yes, they're hard to break. I broke one years back outdoors, I was standing upwind. I didn't observe any dust when it broke open, it was a clean break.

Many thanks for the detailed troubleshooting guide! In my case the problem was that one the connections between the magnetron and its cables developed a dark layer of corrosion or burn (probably high transient resistance caused by poor connection) over the years, which finally lead to complete open circuit right before the magnetron. Mechanically cleaning the developed residue from the connections and making the cable's connector terminal tighter with pliers solved the malfunction.
I followed your advice since this covid season dried up our pockets and decided to try my luck on 2 units of my broken microwave ovens, and found one with 450k ohms short capacitor, and the other with total short 0 ohm. Both have broken fuses. I cant thank you enough

Also check the resistance of the magnetron antenna (cylindrical tube at base with output aperture) to the case. It should read very low (fraction of ohm) just like between the terminals. If it reads high, you may have a bad magnetron even if the other resistance readings look ok. I had one that measured at 35 ohms. All other measurements were normal.

Excellent video. Just resurrected my large, expensive, over the range Whirlpool microwave oven. I verified all of the parts per your video, but I found that someone had previously tweaked the socket for the heavy amp fuse so the power for the transformer was intermittent. I am an IT engineer and a former helicopter mechanic and this video is one of the best how to's I have ever seen!! Subbed.

Great video, although buying all equipment and parts to fix it, it's so much cheaper to get a a new $70 microwave. After buying a diode for $21 and it didn't fix the problem, I got a brand new one for $70. Parts could be expensive, not worth time going through the microwave unless you want to be a repair guy.
Following your instruction I was able to fix my Godrej Microwave. The fuse was out. I found that the capacitor was faulty. I did not have a multimeter, but I found the capacitor base had ballooned out little. Also for precaution I changed the diode. The microwave started properly. In India the capacitor does cost around INR 150/- and diode INR 30/- and fuse INR 10/-. Hope it helps someone else too. Thank you dude for this video.
Hi, A new problem has cropped up. There was a spark and burning smell. I tried again with a glass of water for 10 seconds and found the smell back but no spark this time. The water didn't change temperature at all. On opening the microwave I removed the new high voltage capacitor and diode and found the burning smell from the capacitor point. It's not burst or deformed this time. On leaving the unit open in air I touched the transformer coils and tried smelling but there was no burn smell from there or megatron. But even after an hour the capacitor gave the burning smell. I believe the new one was not good one or the diode not good so I will get both of them new. Just wanted to know is there any other parts need to be replace. The fuse both the direct line or high voltage are good. The megatron was again making louder noise (I believe again diode issue). Let me know what else needs to be fix with the new capacitor and diode. Thank you in advance. :)

Thanks for making this video! I've taken my microwave apart and tested both the transformer and magnetron with the ohms meter. I've removed them from the unit. In both cases there is zero resistance on the input leads indicating they're both bad. Would it be unusual for them both to go bad at the same time? Also do you have a suggestion on where to get parts cheap?
Thanks for the great video. My microwave would power on and seemed fine, but would not heat. It turned out to be the micro switch for the door interlock. It wasn't bad, but it was oxidized and the clip was loose, causing a permanent open condition. Possibly arcing over a long period of time. Pulled it out, cleaned it up with a bit of sandpaper, and reinstalled it. The fan had also fallen off the motor spindle, but a paper shim took care of that. It's working great again!
Note: When you discharge the capacitor - which he does early on in the video - just attaching the wire to somewhere on the chassis might not be enough. The chassis needs to be grounded to truely discharge the cap. If you have a grounded wall outlet, plug the microwave back into the outlet, and then the chassis will be grounded for proper cap discharge. DO NOT TURN THE MICROWAVE ON! And keep in mind, when plugged into the wall outlet, there will be live components within the unit. Be careful what you're touching.
I was getting ready to replace my 7 year old unit but after seeing this i decided to give it a try. Once i got it open and started checking the switches I found one of them shorted out and ordered it on Amazon. Thanks for the Information , You saved me a ton of money

Excellent video thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to go into at great length all the different components and ways to check them. Much appreciated and take care.
@Sheri Kinard You still have not allowed others to reply. Every microwave oven is different, but the all operate the same way. You may also have an inverter microwave. Usually only one ceramic buss fuse, but if you see 3, then you have 3. I suggest you perform a Google search for your microwave oven model # to get more details. If you don't know what your doing, then I recommend you do not try repairing your microwave. It could be very dangerous.
***** The microwaves are directed into the oven cavity. The screen door has mesh which does not allow the microwaves to pass through. Just stand back and you will be fine.
Thank you so much! Turns out my microwave just had a bad switch at the door latch, I replaced it as well as the burnt light bulb for $2 total and the unit works perfectly fine now!
I swapped out the magnetron and now the microwave works beautifully. The strange thing is the new magnetron tested just like the old one. Three zeros on the ohmeter between terminals and open circuit to the case. The old magnetron must have failed in a different way. I did notice that the microwave cover felt warm with the old magnetron like it was getting heated up instead of the food. The new magnetron came with a double gold gasket instead of a single one. Maybe there was leakage with the old one? I can't explain it because I wouldn't have condemned the magnetron based on the test results. Happy its working anyway, Thanks
Did you base the assumption that the magnatron was bad on the three zeros? Or something else? I was unclear on the significance of the 3 zeros.. Which is my issue

Question, every thing on my microwave seems to work fine but as soon as it is plugged in the fan runs and won't shut off. Does not matter whether is open or closed same thing happens . Tested door switches, work fine. Tested continuity of wires no problem there, any ideas? Only way to shut fan off is to pull the plug. Thanks , Paul ... Great video!
you have a shorted fan relay it is the small relay sometimes is may unstick if you tap it if this works good if not replace with correct coil voltage and pin layout the contacts are welded together
Hey this is the best video I have seen! My microwave went recently - the oven and grill functions work absolutely fine! Without any knowledge of testing and seeing your video I replaced the HVF after opening the microwave. It had definitely blown. As soon as I replaced it it blew again (again all oven and grill functions worked). Again after a bit of research (and not seeing your vid) I guessed that it was the magnetron had gone. Replaced that fairly easily (now watched your vid to see how to discharge the capacitor). Again it blew the fuse. So decided to try and check the capacitor and diode. The capacitor seemed to check fine (assume the grill and oven functions use the capacitor?) but using a basic multimetre I decided the diode have gone. It’s only a basic multimetre but seemed to be similar to yours. I didn’t hook it up to a battery. Before replacing I thought and hoped the replacement one would work - it didn’t according to the multimetre. So hooked it up to a 9v battery and new and old seemed to work!! So I’m a little confused what I should do next. I haven’t put the new diode in yet to check as I guess the fuse will blow again!! I think I will check anyhow. If you see this do you have any other suggestions? Should I just change the capacitor? When I discharged it I felt nothing - I reckon it felt discharged. I had turned the power off to it for a while. Any ideas would be welcome!!
Very useful video and explanation. Our microwave is from 2002. It gave an F3 error, beeping and the screen was black - clock does not seen. All other buttons work. We opened the cover to reach the panel from back side, cleaned some dust, touched connections on it, and it got O.K. Thank you.
As you mention , the magnetron test is not reliable, It is so unreliable actually that I have NEVER found a defective magnetron that did not pass these tests, If you have 120V coming into the primary of the transformer while running the microwave oven , then the problem is either in the Transformer, Diode, Capacitor or Megnetron, Perform static tests on the first 3 and if they pass then change the magnetron,
Very good video. All about the microwave oven. Not a modeling shoot for you. You just saved a lot of people from running out and buying a new one. Including me! Thanks

ira todd That isn't the proper way, and it can damage the capacitor due to heating from high discharge current. Only short the terminals AFTER doing as I show in the video.

Great video, very clear and logical troubleshooting paths. My 10yr old Bosch microwave stopped heating, using the info in this video I was able to narrow the problem down to the diode. The diode was readily available at an electronics store for $6. Saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you!

Thank you. With this guide determined my diode is bad. Ordered a new one from Amazon for $10 with free delivery tommorrow. Faster than buying and installing a new over stove microwave...and a lot less expensive. Thank you!
My Fluke digial meter has a diode check setting. I verified that the diode check setting worked by tesing a few brand new low voltage diodes I had on hand. They tested good, so I assumed my HV diode was bad. But, the new diodes I recieved tested bad on arrival. So, I grabbed a 9Volt battery and checked to see if voltage floweed through them as expected, 0 volts with the diode one way, and some voltage the other. So, the HV diodes are actually good, and something else is wrong with my Microwave. I'll have to dig into it more. But, I still like your video, because it allowed me to understand how all the components work together and how to test each.
This is what makes youtube great. Like others have said fantastic clear breakdown of every component with diagnostics on each. Capacitor sagety is a big one.

Fascinating video. I’ve worked on a few microwaves and usually found mechanical issues. I’m not going to bother with all of this currently. I paid $11 at a thrift store for a microwave that has only two lights on the display that are on. I open the door and the fan and the light that illuminates the inside of the oven turn on. By the time anyone reads this, I will probably have thrown the microwave out. Haven’t ruled out keeping some of the major components for spare parts. I use mine in a big rig. It’s a rough environment for almost any appliance with all the bouncing, shaking and vibration. I use an inverter for power (converts DC from truck batteries to AC) and this could be causing these issues.
First of all, thank you for the detailed step-by-step process on troubleshooting microwave problems. The first time I went through the video while diagnosing my problem it was clear that the DIODE was faulty, received no reading at either end of the diode using 2000M setting on meter. I recently had a similar issue with one of the same microwave I previously repaired and wanted your opinion. Again, everything on the microwave would work but there was no heat when operating. I went through each of the diagnostics steps again and when I got to the diode I could only get the low reading on it even after flipping the leads and having the meter set at 2000M. The funny part is, I had a brand new diode and when I tested it, I could also only get the low reading on the one side, the other side simply remained at 0.L. I wasn’t sure what to do in this situation other than go to a more detailed test on testing the diode with a 12V battery, and small resister as per your advance diagnostic of this part. I didn’t immediately have a resister available so I swapped the new diode in but also installed a brand new Magnetron which I also had as a spare part. Microwave is again heating normally. Questions: Why could I not get a high reading on the diode both old and new? If the diode was defective again, what could cause the diode to go again after just a few months? Replacing the magnetron is only going to make the microwave more efficient even if the old one was still OK - I’m almost possitive the original one was still operational. Thanks again for your excellent videos and any comments you might add to my post.
thanks a lot for the video. I have a 20L microwave+grill about 24 years old. At times it used to stop working--- trips after starting. i used to open and meddle with it and it used to start working again. didn't know why or how. two days back same problem. this time i didn't succeed with my meddling. today morning i searched and saw ur video--- opened the microwave cover and tapped the relay on the PCB a few times and BINGO , it started working again. Thanks again ---- T. Kishan Rao Hyderabad India May 29, 2024
Thank you so much for this. I already replaced the unit (due to lack of time to do the full diagnostic) but I finally hauled the old unit out and went through the whole process. I already knew the HV fuse was blown, but when it still didn't work your video helped me narrow it down to the HV diode. I was ready to toss the (very nice Samsung) microwave oven in the trash. Of course what makes it harder is that your average DIY multimeter does not ho up high enough to test the output of the transformer. Otherwise, it'd probably be fairly easy to see that the voltage is not rising to proper levels :-)

Hello, thank you for an excellent video. I'm however having a weird microwave issue and 3 techs have been unable to help. The whole microwave (lights, display, power ) will go off, come back on randomly days later and run until it blows fuse. Changed cap, magnetron, door switches, really only thing left is control board. Any insight? Thank you. Scott
Scott Clune Could be a misaligned door switch, faulty thermal cutoff, faulty wiring, or faulty control board.
I followed your video and found nothing else seeming to be bad with it.
electronicsNmore how I found?
As someone with no experience testing a microwave, your video is clear and concise and demonstrates that it doesn't require a licensed repairman. It requires a little common sense and attention to safety.
Thank you for your effort.
the behavior of electricity on a capacitor is the most tricky safety part.
Yes Sir, you said it right...👍👍👍
My mom's microwave works great but makes an insanely loud sound. It sounds like a magnetron (electrical) and not like a fan (slapping). Is there a way to fix the sound or do I need to replace the magnetron?
Michael Gustavson
Did you have it fix ?
@@MichaelGustavsonArchitect years ago when microwave ovens cost six times more than today, I used to replace lots of magnetrons and other components but not anymore because they are mass produced, the ovens are so cheap to buy and last a lot longer.

Great information I learned something from what you had to say
Thx for this
Very informative. Thanks.
Correct, well noted.

This is the most thorough, clear, and concise video for troubleshooting a microwave. All of my questions were answered. Thank you very much!

Amen. this is by far the best one I've seen today! Thanks!!
thanks for the great troubleshooting video.

I agree with other comments. I have watched probably a thousand repair videos, and this was the best. My problem ended up being the diode. Now it works like a charm.
The connection from the relay to the board was loose. Tested the fuse first. Pushed the connector back on. Good to go. Many thanks!

I'm not used to having viewers put their hand into their pocket to show how much they appreciated my video, or the fact that I replied to their question to help them. The great majority of viewers feel "entitled" to the information I provide in my DIY repair videos. Stay safe. Thank you!
If the oven was unplugged before opening it up, the screwdriver shouldn't get hot when using the resistor discharge tool. Thanks for watching!

The most professional, understandable, useful explanation possible.Respect.

(Plugged into an outlet for the non-geeks)
One thing I would add is a strong caution regarding the magnetron vacuum tube insulator.
For any "DIY" people, this guy did a good job talking in laymens terms.

If you haven't watch this guy's video on repairing window air conditioners, you need to. He packs more information into a half hour that you need to watch them over and over to get it all. These video are like mini- courses in repair.
Great to hear!

The best explanation ever, I have a question: what is the function of high voltage diode and capacitor?
It doubles the output voltage. Thanks for watching!
ua-cam.com/video/8lWkSEZrYVI/v-deo.html

Subbed.
Glad to hear you enjoyed my video. :-) Be sure to check out my extensive video playlists, especially my appliance repair and tip videos. Don't forget to rate thumbs up and share my channel with others. Thank You!
I will! I am fixing my broken icemaker next :)
I do more of residential tubing and wiring I haven't done this kind of thing but now it's all in my head .thank you!
Wow, they ripped you off with that diode. I only pay a couple bucks. Glad you enjoyed the video!
In your case yes.. Our built in range mounted microwave would cost $800 to replace
Glad to hear my video helped you! Please return the favor by watching my other videos and most importantly sharing my channel with others. Thanks
Will do so. Keep the good work up. :)
Hi,
A new problem has cropped up. :)
very informative repairing video, thanks for good work!

Double check your meter. Use an incandescent bulb to verify.
40 Watts : around 97.6 Ohms
60 Watts : around 71.4 Ohms
100 Watts : around 39.5 Ohms
@@electronicsNmore Great Idea! I'll do that thank you. Where do you buy most of your parts?
Thanks for the great video. My microwave would power on and seemed fine, but would not heat. It turned out to be the micro switch for the door interlock. It wasn't bad, but it was oxidized and the clip was loose, causing a permanent open condition. Possibly arcing over a long period of time. Pulled it out, cleaned it up with a bit of sandpaper, and reinstalled it. The fan had also fallen off the motor spindle, but a paper shim took care of that. It's working great again!
Glad it helped
Note: When you discharge the capacitor - which he does early on in the video - just attaching the wire to somewhere on the chassis might not be enough. The chassis needs to be grounded to truely discharge the cap. If you have a grounded wall outlet, plug the microwave back into the outlet, and then the chassis will be grounded for proper cap discharge. DO NOT TURN THE MICROWAVE ON! And keep in mind, when plugged into the wall outlet, there will be live components within the unit. Be careful what you're touching.
Many thanks for this comment. I hope everyone reads it and heeds your advice.
Thanks for the very helpful valuable needed info , very appreciated here ,very well presented, keep up the fine productions 📚📘📐🔬🎓⚡
I was getting ready to replace my 7 year old unit but after seeing this i decided to give it a try. Once i got it open and started checking the switches I found one of them shorted out and ordered it on Amazon. Thanks for the Information , You saved me a ton of money

Thank you for the detailed troubleshooting analysis. I confirmed my High Voltage Cap was bad. Ordered a new one and all is good again!
Wow! I will not do that myself but great video. Thanks for sharing your great knowledge!
Thank You! If you don't feel comfortable doing this, then you made the right decision. :-)
@Sheri Kinard
You still have not allowed others to reply.

The microwaves are directed into the oven cavity. The screen door has mesh which does not allow the microwaves to pass through. Just stand back and you will be fine.
hello I have a sharp R980-A convection microwave and it stops constantly when in Reheat Pie mode
how fix microwave door lock
I subsribe you're channel b'se youre good and informative, great thanks!!

Alan Pastor good evening
Perfect 👌.
Very useful. Thank you .
Very useful video and explanation. Our microwave is from 2002. It gave an F3 error, beeping and the screen was black - clock does not seen. All other buttons work. We opened the cover to reach the panel from back side, cleaned some dust, touched connections on it, and it got O.K. Thank you.
As you mention , the magnetron test is not reliable, It is so unreliable actually that I have NEVER found a defective magnetron that did not pass these tests, If you have 120V coming into the primary of the transformer while running the microwave oven , then the problem is either in the Transformer, Diode, Capacitor or Megnetron, Perform static tests on the first 3 and if they pass then change the magnetron,
Excellent observation, the cost of a magnetron would probably lead you to buy a new oven instead.
before changing the mag check for loose conectors very common problem. usely the plug will show a small burn mark
thanks
Very good video. All about the microwave oven. Not a modeling shoot for you. You just saved a lot of people from running out and buying a new one. Including me!
Thanks

ira todd That isn't the proper way, and it can damage the capacitor due to heating from high discharge current. Only short the terminals AFTER doing as I show in the video.
ira todd
Do as you like. :-)
electronicsNmore how do you turn on ANNOTATIONS?
Shafeck Brown
You need to click on the button at the lower right portion of the video player window. Unfortunately, you can only see them using a computer. Mobile devices won't show them.
IRA Todd, what happens after doing that (shorting the capacitor)?
i'm sick of that tamper shit i lose every one of those screw drivers i'm buying an angle grinder next
Angle grinder very fast - very inexpensive! Great power tool to cherish.
Angle grinder is the tool god!
Great video, very clear and logical troubleshooting paths. My 10yr old Bosch microwave stopped heating, using the info in this video I was able to narrow the problem down to the diode. The diode was readily available at an electronics store for $6. Saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you!

Very helpful. He spoke English well and clearly explained each step well which made diagnosing my problem much easier.
Thank you for this video. I was able to troubleshoot and replace my magnetron because of you.
You just saved me $600!!! Bad Switch. Took it out, tap it on the counter a few times. Now works fine. Just sent over some money via PayPal. Thank you.
Glad to hear that! You may need to replace the part, it could happen again. Thanks for your support !
I just came here to tell that , This is the greatest of all time video on microwave repair ❤
Thank you. With this guide determined my diode is bad. Ordered a new one from Amazon for $10 with free delivery tommorrow. Faster than buying and installing a new over stove microwave...and a lot less expensive. Thank you!
As long as you tested it correctly, you should be good to go!
One of the best microwave repair videos I have seen - good voice for presentation and videos skills!

Best video ever on a thorough microwave troubleshoot. Thank you.
Kishan Rao Hyderabad India May 29, 2024
This video is so detailed and awesome. Thank you my man!
Mr.ElectronicsNmore ,you are a GOD sent and I wish you could live forever and help people as you do now
