- In this 3rd episode of my series of Tales from the Hoodie, I share some of my life and times on the island of Saipan in the pacific where I spent more than 25% of my life to date....a paradise lost for sure....and a must visit for all you island adventurers....
Hey Craig, you're a great storyteller! Your video reminds me of my dad (who was also a great storyteller) telling me about his early-adult days in Montreal. I'm considering retirement partially in Rota; love hearing your details about Saipan. I'm looking forward to watching your other videos.
Thank you brother…..I’m sure you’ll find Rota to be quite the paradise indeed….
Hafa adai Mr. Garrison.. Ive been wondering where have you been.. i
am in the class of 2000 of MHS.. On behalf of your students back then & a CNMI local resident, I want to thank you for sharing knowledge about Saipan & most of all, Thank you for your Service under the Public School System.. so nice how your sweater is from Manta Ray.. I live right in front of Kobler Elem. School since 1980 one of the first residence here on this village... take care and looking foward to more videos..
Hey Juan… That is awesome… Glad you found the channel…I figured now that I’m retired I gotta do something right… L O L tell everybody to subscribe ha ha hi bro good to hear from you guys…
That’s right! I worked at a garment factory when I was 18yrs. Never bought brand name/ expensive clothes again. It’s only the label that matters.
What's up Mr. Garrison! One of my fav teachers at MHS! Pushed this man's buttons many times but he never sent me to the principals office lol. Thank you for being who you are, Sir!
Haha…thank u brother…..love hearing the updates…lol
I was just telling a friend the other day about the "Made in USA" label scam that was happening on garments in the early 2000s. I didn't realize that China avoiding tariffs was behind that! Thanks for explaining that.
They were indeed a major player…so much so that the Los Angeles garment district which normally was the top producer for USA garments, actually filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming unfair business against the whole of CNMI garment industry…
Thanks, nice story. Had my dinner while watching it. I could feel that warm Thai sun!
Hafa Adai, Mr.Garrison! 🌺🌴🇲🇵
Si Yu'us ma'åse for this very informative video! Love it!❤
Todo mauleg Ang…good to see u watching! 🌊☀️🌴🏖️
21 years ago, I met my wife on Saipan when I was working on the ships anchored there. I tried to get her to come back to the States but she refused and we have been living on Saipan ever since. I'm actually thankful for her stubborn decision and I don't want to live on the mainland ever again.
yeah...the states is a sad place theses days...as we get older we look for time better spent...in some ways we think we should have stayed on Saipan as well...but alas...we now live in Thailand...you must of been through the terrible typhoons of recent past...we were lucky...we had just left...we always talk about visiting as we have many friends...but not sure its in the cards....
@@unclecraigbaannawk Yeah we went through two of them Saldair and yutu not sure how to spell without looking them up. I have a video of it on my channel but the winds were too strong to get out there and film most of the storm. Amazing power the storms have and the damage was crazy. But I still love it there especially early in the mornings and on the weekends when it is so quiet and warm. I love the sound of the roosters in the morning with my coffee.
1988-89, 1994-1999. Was on the MPS ships you saw out there every day. Also worked for Pacific Island Aviation and Air Micronesia as an aircraft mechanic. Been there, done that, got the tshirt. Did you know TOMAS?
small world eh'...yeah it is a wonderful place...TOMAS?...the Bishop?...I knew a few guys named Tomas over the years....loved when they had AirMic..
.. Darn Craig, this video brings back fond memories.. In my younger days I liked to dive the FSM. I remember diving Yap’s reefs sitting on the cleaning stations waiting for the Mantas to come whilst chewing betel.. I never figured out how to bring back some stone money. 555
Great video. I need to watch the first two videos.
Stay Safe, and Stay Blessed !
That’s awesome….indeed my days in the pacific from Palau to Yap, the Marianas and more were some of my most memorable…
great video can't wait to read your book
Good to see you Mr.Garrison I enjoyed the video of home learned some thing I didn’t know and great to hear how you came and lived your 15yrs there
Right on …glad u enjoyed it man….
Thanks for sharing your story.
Thank you
Right on....
Great teacher and good vice principal during my half year at SSHS you the man sorry for all the head aches but nice to see your doing good DOLPHINS and MANTA RAY 02-03
Hey brother...no worries....nobody was a headache...you guys were really a no sweat class...Saipan life was my best time in education...loved it!
Definitely want to read the book
Mr. Garrison nice to see you hope your doing good it's me Marvin MHS and SSHS.
Yo Marv....whassssup brother...good to see you're alive and kickin'....let me know if u make it Thailand one day!
My wife is Thai and we built a big business on Saipan. We bought two town home style houses side by side in Lop Buri, Thailand and when we went to Thai to visit, I didn't want to leave.
Yeah it was always hard to leave Thailand after we visited each year....now of course we don't have to...ever!...lol and hey what was the business on Saipan...my wife owned Hip Hop Islands for many years...it was fun while it lasted...
@@unclecraigbaannawk My wife started a taxi for the ship bums and she did that while I worked on ships. Her name is Gee and your wife probably knows her. We bought a small carwash on middle road 2012 and built it up and then she opened a nail spa and a Thai massage that does really well. We also own around 20 cars we rent to local people and ship bums. I call them ship bums since I have worked ships for 33 years, the ship bums are the only customer that rips us off.
Your a bad man Craig ! 555
Worked in one the factories run by Thais... It was 34 years ago at the Onwel Factory in Susupe
Yep Onwell.. right there in back of MHS… I know it well… Those were the days eh’
@@unclecraigbaannawk - Yes, those days are gone.... Very sad, Oh and My Wife remembers You from MHS... She is a Class 2001 Graduate
Where did you record the video from. The style of stairs reminds of either Japan or maybe even the Philippines. Maybe even Kauai.
This video along with most all of mine are recorded in Kamphaeng Phet Thailand at our farm...you can check out our house tour video here.. ua-cam.com/video/6wsNew4_028/v-deo.html
You were closer to Australia than America. Oh, jungle parties, you need to do an episode on just that alone.
as much as he's gotten around and from a young age, I'm sure he's got LOTS of stories, maybe even some he can tell on here :) Gonna be interesting to hear em!
There used to be flights from cairns to Guam but they shut that down over a decade ago😞
51st state!!!!
Indeed….should have been a long time ago…sad really the US Commonwealth’s are not given equal status….
UA-cam: The modern place to send grandpa when you just can't tolerate yet Another flipping story! 🤣
Haha…indeed…and be it known there are actually a number of ‘grandpa groups’ that make the journey and tell their stories sitting on the beaches…many of them shed solemn tears…some never made it home….
6:24 Sir, it was the largest exporter not an importer. A country who sells products to other countries is called an exporter not an importer.
Ahh I stand corrected…yes the US imported the garments made in Saipan, although not actually another country, Saipan exported their finished product to Mainland US.
@@unclecraigbaannawk Thanks sir, Have a nice day.
does anyone know what the tax rate would be in saipan for a U.S. citizen who moves there and earns money stock trading?
Guess that depends on whether the company is originating on Saipan..
thanks for the response. no company. just a U.S. citizen moving to saipan and earning income from stock trading. I know in the states that would be taxed as SHORT TERM CAPITAL GAINS which can be quite high. hoping it was a lot lower there in the northern marianna islands.
@@wasatchm We lived there for many years...we also filed business taxes etc...as far as I remember the tax codes were still very simple on the local side of the house...federal tax was the same as if I lived in the mainland US...I just filed and sent it off... here is a link to the CNMI Dept of Rev n Tax forms...maybe that can help as well finance.gov.mp/forms.php
thanks. so you didn't change your tax domicile from the mainland to CNMI? you just lived there but never became a resident?
@@wasatchm my tax domicile was the CNMI....you're still required to file federal tax as its a US Commonwealth...the local tax is the same as a State Tax...so really there's nothing different than as if I was filing in CA...just some local codes..
Is it hard to find rentals there?
Hi Sekeena...do you mean house/apt rentals? not hard really...of course they have cars for rent at the airport... but you can go low and get a one bed airport kinda apartment for about $300 or a house on a hill for 1500$...there are rentals....often times its a better deal if you're on the ground looking around...the power bill is expensive as its an island....especially if you're addicted to air-conditioning..lol...but you can look at some properties here www.saipan-properties.com/finasisu-terraces/ hope that helps..
What a memorable story. Would be nice if you can mention the areas and villages in your story. My mom worked in the garment factory since 97 up until 2005 and I knew you were principal from Southern but didn't meet you until you worked at MHS. Good memories.
Thank u so much...indeed good memories...I'm working on an islands video so I'll be sure to add some great Saipan content!
@@unclecraigbaannawk nice. Looking forward to more nmi videos. Wish you great health sir ♥️
What's up Mr.G
Whassssup my brother.....its all good here in Thailand....are u still on island?...I miss u guys ...tell Auntie Mona I miss her too...!
Nobody cares about saipan, theres nothing there and its far! Flights to Puerto rico $200 flights to Saipan $2000
Haha…come on bro…you know u care…and there tons to do there…as for airfares…coming from the US yes expensive…but like $250 from Korea..and about 500 from Bangkok so it is affordable for certain regions…

Saipan is U S, that's America,
