- In this video, I wanted to take the time to provide you with my personal understandings of what it is like living on Guam after just a few months.
I know it's difficult to judge Guam after the recent typhoon, especially since I wasn't here before it. I know that many things are a touchy situation and always have been. The goal of this video is to bring some things into the spotlight (even though some shift between the light and shadows) that way you (local or tourist) can understand what living here could be like.
My idea of this video is still to show appreciation towards Guam while making us all aware of the many things some like to hide away. We want a better and brighter future for the island, for locals, and for tourists. We want to have a quality life and enjoy the beauty of this Pacific Paradise.
There are many parties to be held accountable with such series of changes, but unfortunately our voices are never strong enough. Let's cross our fingers and hope that the path forward is of improvement and correct judgement.
I'd like to have an open discussion with you all. Tell me below: how do you feel about these things? Are there any other things that should be brought out from under the carpet? How do we tackle such situations?

I lived on Guam for 3 and a half years and loved it! Very humid. Expensive. The water is beautiful. 70 degrees at 2 am. The roads are bad because they are built with coral which makes it like driving on ice when it rains.The locals we found to be wonderful to the military. Everything is shipped in which make things expensive. But they have such wonderful food! I still make chicken Kelluguen and Finedene!
You are right. Both those foods are amazing. We only hope that the roads improve over time! But, I think it's very difficult for many people to live here long-term if they are not form here
Agreed but the water was 82’ at 2AM and at 2PM.
My sons father in law (Chamorro) makes chicken kelluguen…. BEST EVER!!!! Finadene a little hot, but I’ll make it a bit toned down! His red rice amazing too!!!
I lived on Guam for two years and loved every thing about it. Locals weren't real friendly towards military, but this was in the late 80's. The rain was normally very small squalls. I once avoided a rain shower by crossing to the other side of the street.

What about the inside corruption of the family governments? Are they straight and clean? Even if US had no role on the island, the place wouldn't be much better either way. Look at any small Pacific Island that isn't fully run by tourism

Also the price difference for the military is due to the fact that the military imports their own items. They are not relying on using shipping companies and paying import and export taxes to get things from Korea, Vietnam etc.
They use their own ships and planes to bring supplies so it’s much cheaper and they can sell things on base for much cheaper. Military personnel and contractors are also getting set pay based on their rank. Unlike civilians, which historically can get paid anything, higher or lower wages. Depending on what their employers want to pay them.
Military personnel don’t have the luxury to apply to different jobs, to make more money or up and move to a different place. They are stuck there, making what they make until they can advance in rank. So prices on a military base need to be pretty standard because it has to be affordable when there is no other option and they HAVE to remain on the island, and HAVE to remain at their pay scale.

Matt, man you are spot on! I lived on Guam for two years and experienced many of the things you spoke about. First of all, I have to say the local people are indeed very nice and made me feel special being on their island. The abandoned cars, bad roads, pollution, and poverty is ubiquitous. I think the Island can be so much more beautiful if they got rid of all the trash and stray dogs. I learned that one of the reasons why there are so many stray dogs (Boonie Dogs) is the cost to ship them; it is extremely expensive to ship pets from Guam and often times when people leave, they simply leave their pets behind, especially their dogs. The cost of living for the local folks is out of hand, Payless and KMart are the main stores and both of them are far too expensive as well as the cost of gas. Construction is everywhere and as you mentioned is ridiculous. Ypao road has been under construction for two years and it does not seem it is going to be completed anytime soon. Guam will soon be like Hawaii where it will be too expensive for local people to live on their own land. I was paying $2,300 for basically an Efficiency, well over priced. Because of the influx of military personnel coming to the Island, the cost of housing has gotten well out of hand! I did enjoy my time on Guam, but dude this is a Great video!
Absolutely!! I've heard costs to ship pets is just astronomical!! it's so sad. Sucks that locally family-owned businesses like Payless don't have lower prices for the local people here. Like a loaf of bread can be $6 which is nuts! Things sure are getting more out of control. The future here will be very challenging. One thing is that hopefully the military forces all militants to house on base once all on-base housing is completed, this could help out a bit but as we know, they are far from completion of all bases still.

The reason the tourists areas look like they do is because the tourist areas cater to people from mainly Japan. It is the closest part of the US to Japan and people from Japan, Korea, China who want to experience the US go to Guam and CNMI to get the feel of the US without having to travel a day to get there.
It is a short plane ride as compared as flying to Hawaii or mainland US, cheaper too.
So they want the vibe of the mainland US in the tourist areas, while still catering to things like Japanese tastes when it comes to the quality of things. They expect it to be nice and perfect.
Things on Guam and CNMI offer things to foreign citizens like renting muscle cars or shooting ranges. Things that they will not find in their home country.
Like the food offered, like big American “hamburgers” still cater to Japanese and Chinese tastes, and are not what would be found on mainland, but they can still say they had an American Hamburger, even though it’s a fusion.
But that’s the reason why the tourists areas seem perfect it because they cater to one type of tourist from one certain part of the world, not as a major tourist destination for the entire world. Not like mainland US where it caters to tourists from every inch of the world at any given time.
Ah yes absolutely. I agree with you there. Makes perfect sense. And you definitely see mostly those types of tourists doing those types of things. The only time I see other tourists is when they are visiting family stationed here or have been living here for a while. Very few western tourists come out of curiousity.

Glad I could share some current thoughts about Guam. It's a beautiful place with many ups and downs. No matter what, it's a place all should experience and remember because there is a lot to offer :)
I'm born and raised in Guam and can appreciate and understand the video with an open mind. Don't mind the other closed minded people who think everything is negative/hate towards Guam.
as for the stray dog situation, there are too many stray dogs, and not enough legal authority to capture the dogs. The pound up at GAIN in Yigo is at full capacity and cannot take all the dogs at one time if that makes sense. Everyone can report a stray dog to get captured but where would that dog be stored and kept?
Thanks for your comment. I have heard that GAIN is always full. Unfortunately, sounds like the government and local mayors don't have any plan to actually tackle such a problem.
@@KuxWolf When my dad passed he left over half of his estate to the animal shelter in his area (Dededo). We knew he would do this as he was very active in fostering and providing food to the local shelters. I was always very proud of him for that.

Thanks for your insight on Guam. i have been wanting to visit there for a long time. it's on my list. I'm actually surprised at have much trash there is and the lack of island support.
Unfortunately, some people just don't have common sense when it comes to cleaning up after themselves. The trash issue sucks but hopefully it'll keep improving year after year. Hopefully you can visit soon! :)
I'm glad you touched on the Stray Dogs .... ! It is what prevents me from moving there... It's not as bad as American Samoa - where the wild dogs are mean and attack at times- but it's bad enough that you notice... One local told me there are 60,000 stray dogs on the island of Guam. Not sure WHY they don't do anything about it.
Wow, really? it's bad that island too? Didn't hear anything on it. Interesting. I wonder why too. I don't think there's many NGOs to help and shelters are probably already full here.
Wherever you go, dogs that attack people get put down; if not by an official animal control group, then by the locals. Do Guamanians not do this?
@@microcolonelfrom what I have heard the strays in Guam are docile and mostly puppies... but there are estimated at 65000 of them.. !
But I KNOW on American Samoa the roaming wild dogs are a TERROR ! they roam and attack sometimes in packs of around 5 - you cannot go out as a pedestrian at night or you WILL be attacked. You carry rocks around with you or when approached by one , bend over and act like you are picking up a rock to get them to leave you alone.... I have NO IDEA why the authorities in American Samoa do not stop this.... it keeps me from EVER going back
@microcolonel most strys are docile and chill its fairly rare to get attacked by dogs but also yes. If they are aggressive, they do get put down. The dogs that are most aggressive would be owned dogs. As a local

#5. Not California or Florida, but Hawaii. Even back in the 80's the main tourist locations looked the same and was marketed as a less expensive "Hawaii like honeymoon destination" mainly geared towards the Japanese and Koreans. Besides the military, tourism is the main source of income. #6. As my Chamorro father like to say "everyone is on Guam time" I never understood what that meant until I lived there. They are NOT in any hurry. #11 Guam is open 24 hrs a day. Though construction would make more sense being done at night I think it has to do with the lifestyle of Guam. #14 &15 There is horrible dumping and stray dogs in every part of the US. It's an issue no matter where you live. #16 you'd be surprised how many locals have access to military perks. #17 Cost of living...no argument there, but families do take care of their families better than in the mainland. Please note if it weren't for the US military, Guam would be under Japanese rule. One thing you never mentioned even when you were at Asan Point, was the monument of native Chamorros who were imprisoned by the Japanese who were liberated by the military. Please note Guam does not get any funds from the US. They are a truly resilient and loving people.

Yeah I used to live in Guam for 4 years. You have to be careful driving in Guam because the road is very it's very slippery specially when is raining.

My wife and Iive in Japan. We went last week for three days. It was nice to basically be in America and eat American food and go shopping at American stores with just a 3 1/2 hour flight.
It's nice, but yeah wouldn't want to live there permanently. Yes the beaches and water is beautiful but no matter where you live the novelty where's out after a while. The tourist area is nice but how much time you going to spend there then what? Not much to do once the novelty of the beaches where's out. As they say "nice place to visit but don't want to live there".
That's the best part about being so close to Asia. You can get a taste of the American destination without traveling too far. I think you have a good point. As a tourist, once you spend maybe a week on Guam, visiting all the tourist sites and doing all the tourist things, you will become a little bored. Being so close to Asia, 3-5 days is the happy amount I think, especially if one wants to come back in the future.
For many locals here, they don't visit a lot of places as they don't always have time and again, doing the same thing a lot will just make something become boring like you said.

I was born and raised here on Guam. Then after high school, I went to live with relatives in California in the Los Angeles area in 1997 while attending classes at community colleges but eventually dropped out. I got spoiled by my parents sending me money every month and after seven years of not able to get a permanent job I had to come back to Guam in 2004 because my parents could not afford to send me any more money. I did eventually get a job here working at the bakery department of a grocery store but I can only afford to support myself. I would like to return to California someday but I heard it's now difficult to find a cheap place to live. I would like to live in L.A. again near the theme parks and Hollywood celebrities. Maybe if I become a best selling author or some big UA-camr, maybe I could but that's never gonna happen.
Interesting! I've heard about many people going back and forth. Unfortunately, the living expenses of California are outrageous and many people are moving away from California now. I'd suggest other states as they are cheaper. Hopefully you can go back one day :)
@MattReardonVlogs Thanks Matt! The way things are going now with my financial situation. It makes more economic sense to just stay here since I already have my own house and most of my relatives and friends are here. I have a good stable job with benefits and I don't want to start from scratch by moving to another state. If I could save up to visit California for vacation, then I can do that instead of moving back there to stay. 😊
The military isn’t making the price of things go up, it’s the shipping … most 95% of import is shipped from the United States , it’s a maritime law basically… they won’t allow china to ship things there … so , inflation etc

@Reviewsnooz, while you are correct that shipping increases the cost of common goods, because of the military presence, the supply and demand has increased. Capitalism is at work; when there is less supply and more demand, the cost of good goes up. The military is paid a cost of living allowance and a quarters allowance, many of the landlords know the amount for both COLA and quarters and charge accordingly, I know because my rent was nearly the exact amount of what the military quarters allowance is.

The average 2bd 2ba apartment rents for 2240.

Just happens to be the standard BHA that is given to EACH sailor in the Navy for living off base. That means that all but a few places are affordable for locals.

I just got a really good job that’s fully remote and can move anywhere. Since I’m living in Florida I’ve always wanted to live in Guam for 2 years or so, but I’m nervous because I’m a single 32 year old guy and feel like maybe the dating scene won’t be good out there and I will be isolated and alone… what do you all think???
I don't know a whole lot about the dating scene here. To be honest, I feel like you might be right and chances are better in Florida. There are many single military men here shooting their shot nightly. Check some Reddit forums where there is more detail about it. But it's a nice place to live for a bit and forget about the mainland.
You wont know unless you live in Guam. Im also 36 years old single planning to relocate to Guam hopefuly meet friends and someone to settle with
The ONLY bad thing i have to say about Guam is that its so expensive to get there from the states. I want to go back so bad. Take my kids. Introduce them to a beautiful island with a beautiful culture. Live on island time but its so expensive to get there. If youve ever lived there you will always leave a little piece if your heart on the island. And it will call to you for the rest of your life.

I'm native chamorro. The situation with Guam unemployment is due to high immigration and not enough businesses. The government isn't spending the money sufficiently as always. I do agree with a few of your truths. When it comes to pollution... it's basically common sense...the government allows it to happen, some locals don't care, and those coming from third world type countries starting to treat the island like how they did to their country. Pretty much disgusted with political corruption influencing the destruction of our home.
Yes I see. You are right. Sufficient spending in the right places is always a problem everywhere. It's terrible to see so many job hiring signs and ads everywhere, yet the minimum wage doesn't seem to move. $9.25 an hour for the cost of living is non-sense, can't blame people for moving away.

I’ve been there many times just because of my family trip. It is one of the most beautiful islands. Later I hope to live there for a few months.

Not sure I agree with you that the Military is responsible for higher prices. Yes the prices are lower on base, but those items are shipped in by the military and are subsidized for people serving in the Military. It has very little impact on grocery prices off base. But the military may (probably does) impact cost of housing off base since there are a lot of military people living off base. Also, it needs to be said that the Military provides tens of thousands of civilian jobs for local Guam people. Best I can tell using Google that number is around 66,000 well-paying civilian jobs for the citizens of Guam, but that was 2018 data, so probably more than that now.

Military has a big role in the inclination of housing prices off-base. They rent/buy up a portion of the supply driving the prices up.
GRoceries and stuff at Payless, CostUless and so on are shipped from US & other countries, causing higher prices due to time, fees, etc...Many stores are family owned and prices are listed at "what they want to profit".
You're right, the military does provide a lot of jobs and higher income for locals in some situations. Also, many local islanders are military-members as well. I wouldn't doubt a significant percentage of residents being employed by US companies/military.
One thing for sure is that corruption causes a lot of problems here and forces locals to suffer more than they should

In terms of development, Hawaii takes the trophy. There are many similar beautiful features in terms of natural beauty. But they are different in many ways too.
Hawaii is Americanized so as close to mainland/stateside living as possible.
Guam is where you go when you are looking for true culture and island life.
I truly appreciate this video production. 🙏Yes, we don’t always follow the rules and have our struggles with nature as well. But we’re cool year round. And yes our local politics goes through its public processes of ills and thrills and vocal campaigns. DRONES (patrols) will eliminate those who don’t follow rules and will surely keep us all safe; especially our drinking water. 🤔 💭 🧐

I’d really like to go to the Marianas, both Guam and the CNMI. I’m curious though I wonder what political status do the people want? While I want both Guam and the CNMI to become states in the US, I don’t know what the people who live there want. The residents of the territories are US citizens by birth, but they don’t have the right to vote for the president and don’t have a voting member in Congress, that needs to change. The residents are US citizens and need to have the same rights as their fellow citizens living in the states
I think there is a mix of what they desire, some natives want independence while others want to join as a state. Yeah, I agree. It's so odd how that works. If such territories became states, I believe living quality could improve but also continue to make things more expensive at the same time. Let's see what the future holds.
@@MattReardonVlogs I think becoming a state in the union would be a better decision in my opinion. And ya our fellow Americans are treated as second class citizens just because of where they live and I believe that it needs to change. While ya it’s expensive with the Jones act, maybe a possible exception could be made to create competition and lower prices, and maybe more air cargo to elevate the travel time

People do not "choose" to be homeless because housing is too expensive. People ARE homeless because the rent is too damn high. It's kinda gross to complain there isn't enough people harassing the unhoused.
Your sentences basically mean the same thing...
Some do choose to become homeless...especially because rent is too high. It';s the same situation state-side. Of course, some are also forced to become homeless because they can't cover the expenses. Also, many are homeless because there isn't enough space in "homeless shelters" or enough "support" to lend a helping hand to the struggling community. Bottom line is that there are numerous reasons why people are homeless. You can be stubborn and believe what you want.

The economy part is like Florida. The bad roads, trash, and abandoned cars are no problem here in Florida. I have a friend who moved from Florida to Guam and hates living there.

You don't see stray dogs here though and yes that's sad I see alot of dogs roaming around everywhere in the Philippines also, I just feel so bad for them because they look so malnourished.
That is true. Mostly because Animal Control captures and puts them down, or someone rescues them and then they become adopted. It's truly sad. I've seen it the worst in some SEA countries and Latin America

I don't understand why Guam imports everything when they have the ocean all around. Should have really affordable seafood but it's not. They have small fishing boats but nothing big. Why? You would think the sea food industry would be a major industry there.
I'm sure there is some reason to it but it is true that you really don't see affordable seafood dining here. I mean even frozen fish sticks are $11 or more 😢

I agree! Island time isn’t for everyone. Guam is a beautiful island and if the Natives want it to be better in any way, they all must keep pushing for an even better tomorrow (not saying they don’t) but we all know Guam needs to fix a few things.

@@MattReardonVlogs I liked your video, having been to Guam I feel it's accurate however, if you have never been in the military, I find it impossible for you to understand the life, struggles and hardship within the military. It's not an ordinary 9 to 5 job. Things that people call entitled are earned. I bet people that say such things have never had to work 16-hour days for weeks/months at a time, be deployed away from their family for 6 -8 months at a time. Then have to be deployed again in just 2 months. I bet they never had their freedoms taken away, but free go where ever they want. And the majority do it a minimum wage. I'm retired military and I earned every damn entitlement given to me.

I think you need to re check yourself considering they work long 12hr shifts sometimes and they get deployed some times at a comments notice and they live in harsh conditions even here on base anywhere in the us with their families covered in mold. Black mold. Lot of them are living on WIC and food stamps. They are out there fighting for your freedom to open your mouth and say stupid rude things about our service members and you have the audacity to call them entitled. You have no clue what military families go thru. Their lives are uphevealed all the time. A lot of military children are diagnosed with adhd and autism because of the lifestyle. The point is ita the least they can do is give military members and their families cheaper groceries. Not the military fault because everything's expensive. I'm so tired of these islands sell themselves short and given into greed and not caring enough about their own island that they allow all this. Hawaii took in homeless people from Cali Oregon and Washington because their government paid the governor David Ige tons of money to take them off their hands. The philipines does the same thing and brings in tons of casinos from the Chinese because they want more money. These islands don't think they can survive don't stand up and fight and give in and give their island up and let it become this way. Don't blame the military blame the islands government. It's the same with Taiwan and Puerto Rico too. Stop blaming others and take responsibility for your weakness. Your government did this. What happened to farming? What did the chimorrians do before the military for food and supplies? It was probably expensive then too. Get up off your butts and do something. You're on an island. All islands are like what you describe. If you want the American lifestyle and luxuries then you need to go to the States. How well do you think life is in the states? With all the crime, mass killings, millions of homeless, the drug problems, the social problems, the inequalities; you segregate your Native Americans on to reservations and keep their Native blood percentages so you can deny them funding and take their land. I can keep going. America is no better nor is it perfect. Realize where you're at and don't complain. Government of Guam serves the NATIVES first as it should. The US Government only gives Government of Guam just enough like they're dogs waiting for the next scrap to fall off the table. They don't want to pay for all the immigrants they allow on the island along with infrastructure and welfare that comes with them. The U.S. treats the island as an ownership. They can change local laws and they destroy the culture and environment. They only care about the military presence to protect the U.S. mainland. Inflation is though the roof, and always has been, because of the Jones Act. Yet the U.S. wants the Natives to struggle so they will leave the island and they won't have opposition when they want to run their military operations. They build bases on sacred Native land and can care less what the Natives think. They take ownership (steal) of the island water supply and have the nerve to sale that water back to the Natives. FACTS! Chamorros are good people who have been colonized since the 1500's when the first Europeans arrived. It's never been the same since.
Not disagreeing with you nor am I complaining where I’m at. I’ve enjoyed the island life for what it has to offer. I know Island life is tough no matter what. The things I’ve mentioned are to help others know more about the island before visiting. Locals know about it and so do Americans living there. Remember, Americans are mixed people of foreign descent, therefore it’s a worldly problem. But yes, unfortunately todays governments and nations either push indigenous people away, allow outsiders to disrupt their way of living, or protect them completely. It’s a tough world in the end.

Like the other commenter said, very expensive. I recommend visiting the site: "Numbeo" and looking at the individual costs of things here. For example:
- Regular gas is like $5.20 right now, Premium is $5.60 and Diesel is $5.75 or so.
- Average coffee: $6
- Cereal: $7
- Dozen Eggs: $4+
- Basic Unlimited Phone Data Plan: $60+
- 1 Person Average Meal: $13+
- McDonald's Happy Meal: $7
- 6 Pack Craft Beer: $14+
- 2 Bedroom Apartment: $1700
- Utilities: $400+
And so on... Once you pay your rent and utilities, there are some ways to live a bit cheaper (shop at Ross, buy only sale items, don't eat out, etc...) but still gonna cost you some money. You will probably spend $1000-1500 per person a month without rent.

Thanks for posting this. I'm doing research on a place to retire. This territory has been exploited by mainland businesses and the military. All the things are negative with cars, trash would be a job opportunity. More entrepreneurs could develop business.

I don't really have much of an opinion on Trump (don't hate/don't like), but I agree it's getting pretty bad on the mainland as well. I've seen it in many cities East to West.

Don't know why people like to compare Guam with the mainland states. Guam is Guam, it's a pacific island with lots of tragic and horrific history.
Well it is part of the US, isn't it? Hawaii is a Pacific Island with lots of bad/good history too, the only differences are it's bigger and a state, not a territory. The sad truth is that without the US, Guam would be far worse than what it is today. The land has always been seen as having huge potential for development and modernization, therefore why some nations took control 100s of years ago. If it wasn't the US, Spain, or Japan, it sure would've been China or some other nation. Either way, whether you like it or not, it is comparable with the US. There are many similarities shown everywhere. The USD is the currency. There is the US military. The schools are named after US presidents. At least 50% of the food is American. And I can go on...point being that anything and everything is comparable and it's most important to make the public aware of what is under the carpet.
You're assuming that nothing is being done without understanding or seeing what IS being done or what has been done with the limited resources and the nuances of our territorial status that create unique challenges. So many of the issues interconnected to similiar root causes and perennial that are in limbo or ignored at the Federal level.The Government of Guam itself is 53 years old, very young in comparison to many countries. You're video should be titled "surface truths" because you do a deservice to Guam and it's 4,500+ year old history.
Blah blah blah...not assuming...many things has been in "ongoing...to be continued...postponed" status forever. Just ask around! Some things get done promptly while others sit on the back burner for years. It doesn't matter how old the government is, people won't wait forever. If a government takes a long time to do something correctly, people will find their own way to move forward. Why are they ignored at a federal level? Who is responsible?

Shouldn't be surprised at the poor infrastructure maintenance in a US territory. Heck funding from the US mainland govenment to a US territory is primarily to support military and military bases and that comes from the defence budget. You don't really expect congress to allocate budget to somewhere they get zero votes from do you? Heck all congress is doing now anyway is stupid political hearings on inane subjects of no consequence. The House in congress can't even maintain a politician as Speaker of the House long enough to keep the govenment funded so they sure can't do something of any importance like funding anything.

Depends...I don't know where you are flying from. California and back, is probably $1500+ for flights. Hotel, $150-$300 a night. Food and all that, easily over $70 a day. If you stay in tourist area and don't rent a car, you'll keep your costs down
