5 Most Common Faults on Used RVs!!
Вставка

- Today I have a DIFFERENT kind of "Top 5" for you!
These are the Top 5 places I check RIGHT AWAY when looking at a Used RV.
I've been climbing in, on, and under used RVs for over a dozen years now. In that time I've seen some truly deserving the name "like used" and some that are absolutely Handyman's specials and beyond. While there are certainly sometimes MFG build oversights which can lead to some issues the owners themselves are almost exclusively THE single greatest and most influential factor in the lifespan of an RV.
In this video I point out a few key areas and items I try to quickly eyeball when assessing a used RV before taking photos and recording our video tours. This is by no means intended to be "THE ONLY GUIDE YOU NEED FOR USED RVS" or anything like that. Rather, I'm providing this information purely as a courtesy to potential buyers out there who may not have full trust in the dealership or even private owner from which they're buying.
I also never claim to be perfect and absolutely recommend using the information in this video when reviewing an RV we may offer for sale ourselves. I'm pretty good at spotting things but often my job requires me to move quickly and I cannot catch every single thing on every single used travel trailer, fifth wheel, pop up, or motorhome that comes into our inventory here.
If you'd like to see what used RVs we have in stock any time, then please take a look at bit.ly/3aNRaUH

“Making a quick sale is not worth losing your reputation or integrity like that.” If only ALL businesses felt like that. Thank you, Josh.
I'm fortunate to have been trained by and operate under good leadership I think
😰
@@JoshtheRVNerd Josh you are probably one of the most honest in the business. Not only that you do amazing reviews on the rvs you sell. I appreciate all your hard work so keep it up..
Couldn't agree more
I saved a buddy from making a bad decision on a Jayco Hummingbird last year. The seller had detailed the crap out of it, shiny tires and all, but I saw the “pimples” (braille) below the front side window, plus the ceiling flexed when you pushed on it. If I wasn’t there to advise him, he would have bought it.
I showed up to look at a used RV and got a ladder out of my truck, and the seller said, oh your serious. I said, I am not necessarily serious yet, but wanted to evaluate if I should be serious or not. Turned out it was not a winner. Thanks for the tips, great information for those that are not super prepared.
Beware if the seller acts concerned that you are looking at everything
Thanks for the tip, we just bought a used RV and did the same, also brought a battery pack to test the slide and power awning. Ended up getting it for $1k less. Totally satisfied with our new to us RV because of this video.
Lot of money to spend! Nothing wrong with knowing what you’re getting!
Smart move!
Me and my wife decided to sell and go rv . We decided on going to a class C and wondered if all this pertains. To a class C or are there different things to look for ?
@@JCBHS1971same and more.
Almost retired, 60. Looking into RV life, thank you! Imagine their face when I bring a ladder strapped to my Honda Accord 😂😂😂😂 and then they see me, an old hippie lady!! ❤❤ Jeannie in Lakeport California

I wanted to leave an update on my rv after watching this video. We bought a used 2014 wild cat about a month after this video. Out the door price with cash and had enough leftover for a few repairs. No water damage. So i decided to reseal the roof. Well actually I resealed the entire rv including windows, doors, and anything attached to the outside. Ended up replacing slideout rubber. Could not find anything major wrong. Just kept checking everything. Even the tank sensors worked. Just to good to be true was what I was saying. After all these months now and a few trips we had water running down the bedroom wall right below the cap. Heavy rain storm. So I gutted that wall. It appears it has leaked a small amount for a while. So I'm repairing during this winter. The leak turned out to be the antenna. So it's gone. I just wanted to say thanks for these types of videos. We would have never looked for used had it not been for this and 1 other video you made about buying used. Thanks again Josh for what you do
Man... Sounds like a literal nightmare... I wish you luck with your repairs.... Godbless
Absolutely, Uncle Josh is the man!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
We bought a 2014 Falstaff one of first things my husband did get up on roof to ck it Just like Josh ck out 1rst..good then inside
Very satisfied so far. 👌
After retirement I planned on engaging in the RV lifestyle for a long time. 2 weeks of this RV retirement journey was spent attending the RV Inspection Course being taught at the National RV Training Academy in Athens, Texas. Well worth the time and $$ as I now have good knowledge about the opportunities and challenges of these vehicles. It also opened my eyes to the industry practices and all that means. I stayed 2 weeks to learn to be a Level 2 certified inspector. My thoughts, if you are going to be a long time RV'er get some education about the RV's and the industry. Well worth it.
Totally support this
How often do they do this and where are they usually held.

What a great Idea. Thank you for passing on such a valid point.
I’d like to see you do a video explaining all the different materials used on roofs. One piece TPO, Fiberglass, Rubber, etc and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Another video like this one - when test driving a new or used RV - what should you be trying to notice during the test drive. Keep up the good work!
That’s a solid request ty
I second that!
@@JoshtheRVNerd what about an aluminum roof such as on the KZ trailers
This is an excellent idea! I would love to know more about each type of roof.
@@iair-conditiontheoutsideai3076 Agreed. I've owned most all of those. Metal you are only concerned with seals around AC's ,vents, etc. Rubber roofs are the least expensive and have a limited life expectancy. I replaced one at exactly 12 years. The unit I bought was used. I like fiberglass also. Our current Wandelodge has an aluminum roof that is riveted to the bus.
Josh, Thank you so much for this one. I watched it a day or so before driving 4 hours to look at a used RV and found Brail bumps and loose wall paper at the floor that was stated to be in excellent condition . I walked away! I don’t know if I would have found it on my own. Thanks, my wife and I love your videos.
I never want to be the reason someone else’s purchase falls through but I do hope we can help be the reason someone is happy with the purchase they make
It remains a mystery to me that with all the advancements they have made with laminated aluminum & fiberglass walls, the roof is still vinyl over plywood with a bunch of caulking. The floor inside the RV is just as weather proof as the roof. You'd think they would have come up with a better system by now, given that the roof is the most important component of any structure after the foundation.
That's why I'm having trouble getting rid of I think it's called a champion motorhome it has a one piece aluminum roof and all aluminum welded frame and sprayed on foam insulation even though it's old is the hills I know if I try to buy some other used unit I'm probably asking for trouble

Wow. Thank you for this
Josh, you are among the rarest rv salemen being honest and being upfront. Oh yes, there are still places were there word is there bond but its rare. Always a pleasure learning from and watching your videos.
where you located
Actually, it's "Their word is their bond." Not "There word..." But you're right, it's much too rare, and people are really cheating themselves the most.
Back in the 80's when looking at school cars, my dad always took a magnet to the fenders and rocker panels to see if they were bondo'd. Very effective way to determine if they were rusted out and patched up for a quick sale.
I got my first car in '87 and still have it in the garage :)
I remember my daddy doing that!!
I appreciate your honesty, Josh. You are laying the groundwork for what to expect with high standards. For all 👍 much respect
Man I hope so!
I don't always listen to prepurchase inspection videos by Josh...but when I do, my neighbors do, too, loud and proud! Well done, Josh. Well done. Articulate, insightful, and devoid of fluff to wade through. More, more, more, please.
hahaah
Good info. I have an RV so not interested in buying a used one but this lets me know how to inspect my own camper when I winterize it so I can find little problems before they become big ones. Better to nip it in the bud as Barney would say.
It also helps those of us DIYers that want to build our own RVs/truck campers/THOWs, so we know what we should be working and building to preclude
You quoted Barney Fife! Love it. :)
You are so right .. I too, loved this video .. am presently searching on line for something 25f 'n under.
Haha
I always say that like Barney. True. I very rarely subscribe but this one is a keeper. Thanks Josh. I liked subscribed and shared to my daughter. She will be doing the same. ;)
If the integrity that Josh displays is just a snapshot of the team at Haylett RV, this is definitely the kind of place I want to buy from! All day, everyday care for the customer... sign me up! :)
It's a sign of good leadership I think. We often forget the experiences we have at the individual level commonly reflect the practices, teachings, and values of the facility's leadership team.
I consider myself fortunate to have received good mentoring
We've had various team members come aboard here from other places who were of the impression doing things like telling a customer to go get a new credit card to cover a down payment was "normal operating practices for all dealerships" & shocked to learn we don't and WON'T do that kind of stuff.
I've never worked at another dealership so I don't know any differently I guess. But little moments like that really make me value and appreciate my team here.
Amen!!!
Great honest video and so true.
I used to farm and rented out a shed to a RV repair shop. 2/3 of their work was damage from ingress of water. Roof is Number one problem as described. Should be checked yearly and re-sealed with professional mastic. This is often with gummy mastic which always remains sticky or a very high quality professional polyurethane sealant.
Problems on roofs often start when they have been walked on causing cracking of sealant. On sides problems often occur when after market things like bike racks have been bolted on. If you can borrow a meter for detecting moisture on walls, take it with you. To fix these problems, all the inside has to be ripped out and rotten wood replaced. When constructed wood is never treated prior to installation and is usually cheap so rots easily. Repair cost is never cheap, starting at $1000 upwards and you can end up with a bill for more than RV/camper is worth... Have seen this happen many times which is gut wrenching for customers, so buyer be VERY aware!...
Ty for watching and taking the time to share
You ROCK Josh! This is one of the most informative videos I've seen. Thank you for sharing your experience and insight.
Great information to prevent "getting hosed". Thanks Uncle Josh!
Buyers can also buy a moisture detector . And when u walk in a RV if it has fragrace candes or Lysol smell ect. U know the sellers are trying to cover up the smell of mold.
I agree, but I always have scented candles and clean the toilet/sink after every use with lysol wipes. so it could just be scented candles and clean...🤷🏼♀️ So a moisture detector would be a good thing!!
Great tips !!!!!
Especially in the current market !!!
Speaking of current market.. just cause it's NEW DOESN'T mean ur not going to have major problems soon after purchase.
Glad to be of service :)
awesome video, thanks for taking the time to show us what to look for. it means a lot when you take the time to show people things like this. great job keep up the good work.

Good gosh! I’d drive from Minnesota to Michigan to buy from you! My dad was an old RV-sales guy in western MN and you remind me of how he used to educate his customers! Great job!!
Wow thank you for that
I want to thank you for making this video. If I had seen it three years ago, I would have kept on looking for a different RV after Hurricane Harvey. We were newbs to the RV world at the time but we needed a place to live. Our RV had almost all the problems you outlined. I went up on the roof, but didn’t walk all the way to the front. Good thing I didn’t, I would have fallen clean though it. Thank God for Flex Seal! We ended up living in it for two and a half years.
Great video, don’t forget to check the water heater in gas and electric as I didn’t do, mine worked fine on electric but would light and die on gas because the unit had frozen enough to pinch off the exhaust pipe inside the heater, it was a complete replacement to fix the issue.
Josh your "Public Service Announcements" are always welcome breath of fresh air in this industry, thanks for this great list of things to look out for when buying one of these RV's, extremely useful 👍.
My pleasure, James
What's appalling is these dealership's who try and sell these to people knowing there are issues.

Thanks Josh , Well in formed video. Thanks As someone who has repaired a few travel trailers I always look underneath the trailer and check pretty much everything. The under flooring that sits on the frame is a sure spot to see water damage. Loose connections underneath also have been some of my findings when buying another travel trailer.
Ty Dennis. Appreciate the visit!!
Great tutorial. Love your experience and honesty. I had thought about a lot of what you were talking about, especially of the roof. I'm planning for my retirement and have been researching travel trailers. New and Used. Thanks
Ty for watching Mark :)
Very good advice a lot of people would not have a clue about the damage you should be looking for I would like to take you along when I look through RVThanks again
Great video Josh. Always pick up very useful information from your vids.
One place we have learned to check with a used RV is the floor of the Slide out itself. Some manufacturers use a woven tarp material on the bottom outside of the slide. This material is not really waterproof when you get the big down pores when the slide is out. The slideouts should have a drip edge to prevent water working it's way into the underside of the wood flooring. We've seen this on a number of units we have gone to look at. Certain manufacturers use a solid water proof material under the slides with a drip edge to prevent this. There are a few youtube videos that demonstrate the problem. Thank you for showing the ugly side of poor maintenance.
Solid input
Removing a screw from the upper and lower corners of the camper trim strip and finding it rusted is also a good sign to either run or negotiate a better price. Also, if you are finding ants in your RV, you probably have a leak as the ants also need moisture to survive, Personal experience where I learned a lot about how cheaply campers are made. DYI repairs are a learning experience and heighten your awareness if potential issues.
I sure learned my lesson after buying a super cheap Winnebago from 1970 something only to find that my windshield was very susceptible too blowing in the wind
Just want to say, I’m watching this video for the second time and find it as good or better than the first time I watched it. You do a great job John, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Apparently I should have watched this video before purchasing our second RV in less than a year after not having owned one in the past! Thanks for the helpful information.
Great advice and video on what to look for on a used camper. That should be helpful for those buying a used camper. When you mentioned doing more videos like this or videos with information. May I suggest You do a video on camp essentials and tips/tricks for new campers or up coming camper owners. Aimed at people who have never used a travel trailer perhaps. Another one could be a how to video on how to maintain the slide outs on a camper. Or when towing your camper how to protect your glass wear in the cupboards. Things of that nature. Just a throwing a few suggestions out there.
Thank you for all the information and your sincere help for all of us shopping for our RV!

Thank you for doing things like this for those of us in Alabama who can't come shop with you. I wish I could shake your hand. You are so helpful.

Well ty sir :)
Terrific video for everyone to watch. I am retired and living alone near the beach south of LAX but am still considering driving around the country. Have looked at a bunch of videos mostly about people who have bought vans and reconstructed them. Most have not lived in them for long so may not have experienced factors you talked about. However since I am considering everything, you bring out things I would not have considered and I appreciate all that you covered. Thank you and I look forward to more of you sharing your experiences.

Gosh!!! This is great! We are so new and my goodness. We can't afford issues like this. So thank you very very much ❤️
Uncle Josh - what a fantastic service you've provided with this video! In the past I have purchased two cheap pop-up campers with EVERY ONE of your top five, thinking I would fix them. They were not cheap enough - in fact, I put so much time and materials into them they ended up costing more than a new pop-up. I'm echoing previous posters by saying "If you see any of these issues in a used RV that you're looking at, RUN!"
Our pleasure!

Great video and information. Josh pretty much showed how small leaks in the roof can result in water damage practically everywhere. Love how he talks about the 4 corners and why they can become vulnerable due to stress and movement.
Unfortunately most times on older RV's when there is potential for water damage, it's like peeling back an onion. It gets bigger and bigger and bigger. You can't even estimate what the cost to fix it all correctly will be. If I saw water damage on a used RV I was thinking of purchasing, I would have to move on no matter how low the price is.
Great video! Lots of great info here for those of us looking for a used rig. Plus you over-delivered again with bonus tips - you promised us 5 but gave us 6 by including two #4 tips. (ie the first #4 tip at @5:37 and the second #4 tip @7:20). Plus the 5 big ticket items at the end.
Here's my tip when inspecting an RV - bring a GREAT flashlight with you. This helps checking out all the areas you recommended, especially some of the cabinets and storage compartments.
Yeah I don’t know how to stop sometimes lol
Another benefit of a bright flashlight is that you can shine it sideways on walls to see suspicious spots of waviness, which might be missed due to patterns or lack of light. See how it could have helped at 6:22. There the light above it helped, but a flashlight could find such clues anywhere you looked. Same at 7:54, and of course especially to see deep into dark places.
And a really bright flashlight will help even in daylight. This works also to find subtle low/high spots in bare floors.
Always informative videos Josh - Thanks!
So wish I lived near Michigan...I would definitely go to Josh to buy an RV! Such refreshing honesty.
Now you got me also wishing you lives near Michigan lol :)
Our 2007 Wildwood 27RB was Totaled out by two Shops for rear corner bottom under floor water damage. Under the 2/3 Bath and opposite Bunk Corner.
It ruined some wood underneath. Was Black and pulp. Structurally not good. Was told $9K damage. No Shop would touch it.
Nobody could figure out where water got in or came from. I resealed the roof ends and corners every year like you showed. Around Any other roof item. Even Clearance Lights all around. Nobody figured it out and then it was so bad it had to be pulled off the road. Was only 4 years old.

Great video! Im looking to buy a used RV & this video has been very helpful! Thank you so much!
I actually work in RV sales. Not only was this information useful for when I get a trade in, but for general knowledge to keep customers safe!! Keeps me safe, too, because I love remodeling campers in my free time and could save me tons of money and headache. Thank you for spreading helpful info to EVERYONE
I also like how you said "making a quick sale is not worth losing your reputation." Amen! I only want to see happy folks! It's something people get excited about! Keep them excited by selling them something that will last!
Kudos to you and I hope you have a good season
Great information, thank you. This info could save hundreds if not thousands of dollars in repairs and or replacement costs.
That’s the goal!!
Have loved your videos in the past. This one got my subscription. GREAT work! This was very helpful as we search for our 1st travel trailer.
One of the most educational videos that I have watched!
I've sold 8 or 9 RV's in my lifetime so far and it's critical to be honest in your ad because most who look at your RV will see the problem you failed to mention, then there's an issue of trust.
I specify any problem areas in the ad and mention that I've tried to put in the good as well as the bad. It's appreciated.
Agreed. It's just not worth it. "Easy way in. Hard way out."
Hi Josh keep up the good work and wonderful informative videos, my fat ass will be up on the RV roof when i am looking to buy. Thanks Rob
