It is clear that Mikael Akerfeldt is focusing heavily on his vocals. He did covers in both swedish and english so its obvious that it was a focus for him! This is the best his voice has ever sounded imo. I believe Opeth 3.0 is coming and they're gonna be legendary in the prog rock world.

Opeth are in my top 5 bands of all time. I do like their new stuff took me a while to get into sorceress but I did enjoy it in the end. But I do miss the growling. I know with age you lose the ability to be able to project the growl and if they can't do it live then why write an album with growling on. But I do still miss it. Great reaction as always Jim most appreciated 👍

Every Band basically does the same... odd time signatures, mixing other genres together, focusing around single elements and combining them into something extremly complex... every single prog band does that.. and yet they all have something totally unique about them... like we can say: that sounds opeth!... oh that was so Steven Wilson.... isn't that awesome when yopu think about it? :) love it!

I am more of a fan of their old sound but there are some songs I like from their recent efforts but not more than one or two per record. The last 2 minutes of this song might be the most beautiful thing Mikael Åkerfeldt has ever written and sang. In fact I love this record and didn’t think I would. Yes, I miss the gutturals from the old but his clean singing voice has gotten so good that he impresses me more with it than the dark singing. There is another song on this record I absolutely love; “Lovelorn Crime.” Give it a listen if you haven’t.

It may seem like an odd thing to say but I think I actually enjoy him less as a singer now that he's more confident at doing it. I've enjoyed Opeth since 1999, I like both their heavy stuff and their softer material like Damnation and I listened to this song about five times and thought about what I liked about it, such as the great drumming, and what I didn't like as much. And then I went back and listened to the first couple songs off Blackwater Park, which I haven't listened to in a few years. And I gotta tell ya... it just pales in comparison.
It's still very good but it's just not awe inspiring and otherworldly like that material is. Production wise it actually sounds muddy here compared to past albums, and the clean vocals are actually harder to distinguish in the mix here than on albums from the early to mid 2000s.
At the same time, technically Mikael's a better singer now than he's ever been. He's much more confident now but he oversings so much on the melody lines that it actually loses something in the process. It used to be this blend of passionate, intense growls and more plaintive, somber yet very memorable clean vocals. Now he tries to do all the emotion with the clean vocals and he's just crooning all over the place and occasionally yelping here and there like at 1:57. I actually don't mind the fact that it's all clean vocals now; I just think he's trying to do too much in each vocal line.
And Fredericks guitar playing is great but it's mainly this standard rock/metal stuff with none of the elegance of either Mikael or Peter Lindgren. Yeah he's a much better guitar player technically than Peter ever was - I get that - but there's just nothing special about the lead in this song or most of his leads in general. It's badass guitar playing for sure but there's nothing timeless about it.
On top of all that, again the mix is objectively muddy. If you A and B comparison older records from them from the early 2000s and mid-2000s to this one there's less clarity in this stuff. It's actually kind of baffling that it's less clear.
All the instrumental playing is brilliant of course, as always, and he sings really well it's just not as memorable as it used to be, especially when the vocals seem so overdone now. It kills the tasteful, soft parts when he does that, like during the section at the end of this very song. Credence, the softer parts of Godheads lament and The Moor, Hope Leaves, Windowpane: there was so much memorable emotion in those understated melodies and vocal inflections that isn't here in this crooning stuff. It's an odd thing to say again I know but it almost sounds like he's too confident in his approach here. I like the line that he sings near the end that ends with "made of glass" but the rest of it honestly sounds a bit too much to me. It's the same singer I've always enjoyed but he's more showy and it doesn't hit me the same way that their more simple, elegant vocal melodies of the past did.
In some ways with Opeth the vocals have become more showy now while the music has toned down and maybe that's part of why I'm not as enchanted by it.
I respect them as artists as much as ever and don't get me wrong I still do like this song; it's just not as magical for me as it used to be, and that's partly due to the very much embellished singing approach he's using now and music that doesn't hit as hard in either the heavy or the soft direction as the brilliantly contrasting parts of their past great songs.

Mikael is probably the only dude in metal/rock that has always had fantastic musicians around him and the best out of their skills. People will cry around that the classic era with Peter and Martin was the best and it sucked since they left, but damn! Axe and Fredrik are doing such a fucking wonderful job. I'd even say they do a better job on their Opeth than the other two used to do with their Opeth.

I really dislike this song, and pretty much all of Opeth's stuff since Watershed. The start of this song is okay but you can never shake the feeling that they're about to turn it up to 11 but they never do. It's always middling and struggling to get there. Even the guitars sound so pathetic and weak compared to their earlier stuff. The latter half of this song is like a 4 minute long bridge section of an Incubus song, it's just... not the Opeth I know and love.

Toastie88 I've enjoyed Opeth since 1999 and still do, but your point has merit. I listened to this song about five times, thought about what I liked and what I didn't like as much, and then I went back and listened to the first couple songs off Blackwater Park and Still Life and it just pales in comparison in every way. He oversings so much on almost every melody line now. It used to be this blend of passionate intense growls and more plaintive somber yet very memorable clean vocals. Now he tries to do all the emotion with the clean vocals and he's just crooning all over the place and yelping here and there like at 1:57.
And Fredericks guitar playing is just this standard metal stuff with none of the elegance of Michael or Peter Lindgren. Yeah he's a much better guitar player technically than Peter ever was but there's just nothing special about the lead in the song or most of his leads in general. It's badass guitar playing but there's nothing timeless about it.
On top of all that the mix is objectively muddy. If you A and B comparison older records from them from the early 2000's to this one there's less clarity in this stuff.
All the instrumental playing is brilliant of course and he sings fine it's just not as memorable and beautiful as it used to be, especially when the vocals are so oversung now. It kills the tasteful, soft parts when he does that now. Credence, the softer parts of Godheads lament and The Moor, Hope Leaves, Windowpane: There's so much memorable emotion in those plaintive simple melodies that isn't here in this crooning stuff. It's an odd thing to say but it almost sounds too confident. I like the line that he says near the end that ends with "made of glass" but the rest of it's just kind of too much.

Song should finish at 6:20. Acoustic passage is ok, possibly as a transition, but the porno flanger effect singing completely ruins it. Shame.
