Thanks for the content. Always good to learn by watching sessions.
I am new to coaching basketball. Also, I'm interested in helping young kids 6-12 years old max.
I have played briefly in a league and have done many pickup games 5v5 and smaller at different gyms with a wide range from novice to x-D League players.
I went to this site for an ecological and constraints based learning for the players and coach. What I watched was good coaching for a "highly prescriptive" sessions. Where is the players own individual creativity in coming up with their own solutions? This was 6 years ago video. (Could be why)
Maybe the recent video on ecological dynamics is a new avenue that basketball immersion is diving into. I hope so.
I believe these players can and for the love of the game, do most of this work on their own, or with a friend, teammate, or parent.
Maybe it is difficult to show real games based learning on video because it looks messy and chaotic, very similar to the real game. We've learned to play more in context of the game with variation is better for long term development as well as decision making.
This was very similar to traditional coaching that has become overly "command and control" and not even following the pedagogical theory of Direct Instruction. I stopped basketball back in junior high because of the drill (isolated or repetitive) structure. Boring as hell and we now know from research is less effective. It's the classic "coach knows all and follow my directions."
This is what I would like to see youth coaching getting away from. I didn't mind the 3 steps one way and come back and play the 1v1. What I question is, who says (other than coach) that you must do a jump stop, put the ball between your legs and drive to the hoop? It seemed overly constrained to follow directions to the T.
We tell them "how" they get the ball and start their movement. Why? Shouldn't we step in if we see they are doing something that is unsafe or could be potential for an injury? Where is the individual trying out various ways that will intrinsically start to develop through exploration? Encourage new solutions and give specific feedback on when they "do" creative moves for who they are in their own developmental pathway, yes?
Do we (as coaches) want someone to tell us what to do at every conjunction? I doubt it. Maybe give more autonomy and exploratory room in different scenarios and environments of play.
It many take more time for certain immediate technical output, however, the players are learning with game sense and awareness. They will be most likely be above the technical player of set patterns of drills, that change in the invasion game of basketball etc., in the future, but their ability to read the game far surpasses technical movement patterns that all kids catch up to with time.
It's hard to change our world views and cultural expectations of what we are used to seeing as "coaching."
Maybe you disagree. I choose less over-prescription and more environmental exploration. That's where the creativity arises.
Do you plan on putting out new content on ecological theory with young players?
    Thanks - Don
