The Elden Ring DLC Deflect Greathammer Experience is Perfectly Balanced

- I'm alive guys (again)! So the Elden Ring DLC - Shadow of the Erdtree introduced a new crystal tear adding Sekiro-like deflects, which can entirely change players approach to the gameplay. Paired with a strong guard counter oriented build like the Blacksteel Greathammer and the right items, this trivializes the entire DLC despite its infamous reputation of difficulty... in a way that's completely Miyazaki approved. Now imagine unleashing it in the base game... :)
P-S: This video was done in the 1.13 patch. Consort Radahn is pre-nerf
Build: Strength/Faith/Endurance (exact stats spread shown in the intro sequence)

It's funny how you can deflect anything that isn't a grab. The boss throws a nuclear bomb at you, and you deflect it like it's nothing
Best part is reaching max deflect stacks and launching that nuke back at them
And then you get grabbed and everything goes wrong
I noticed in my run using endure prevents messmer from grabbing you during the grab. It's not a deflect but it's good to have options.

9/10 times, the hammer is actually a lot better sacred infused than heavy. It makes the AoE stronger, and I believe makes it deal more stance damage.
That’s strange, I recall heavy with cragblade netting more AR overall - I didn’t know sacred had passive bonuses on the guard counter!
@@Jordienit's probably because the counter shockwave that it does, does holy damage and the weapon originally scales with faith so it would make sense.

I honestly find this deflect tear play style makes the game harder or at least less intuitive as you just have to guess how much knock back certain attacks do and stamina becomes an actually serious concern. Not to mention it requires you to learn a different timing as it occurs on press. Still useful for some frame traps and really fast attacks though.
I like how this is essentially a whole new combat mechanic, it's going to be awesome seeing what's possible to do vs main game bosses now

Idk, I found deflect much more manageable than dodging DLC bosses (I did use Golden Greatshield for the Sekiro 100% block tho). Yeah, some attacks have multiple speeds which fk up the guard counter. Although this made guard counter actually viable.
Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, I'm watching people dodge DLC Radahn and constantly asking myself how tf they figured out which way to dodge and how can they do then so consistently? Meanwhile, I'm just waiting for the right time to press block. Second phase with holy bombs fk up the deflects tho (since you can't guess for sure if you're in radius or not).
You can block insta kill attacks and take less damage when you hadn't yet figured out how to dodge, that alone is enough to make it a super card comparable to rolling. Plus the boosted stunning counterattack, it becomes even better than rolling.

I'm 99% certain they sometimes intentionally have the bosses whiff to throw you off and leave you wide open.

This tear becomes so much harder to use on NG+7 due to the massive stamina damage, you aught to try it lmao. I gotta use brass shield or better with it to make it so I don’t get instantly guard broken on a deflect.

Did something similar with heavy executioner axe with Cragblade except I doubled down on just smashing.
With Deenh's War Cry you get even more stance damage. Some good ass damage all around with deflect as well. Settled on Surgeon talisman for a higher burst average 😂.

Wish they didnt feel the need to constrain such a fun tool to such an arbitrary timelimit, would've been much better as like a passive great rune effect. Not like a time limit does much since graces are so plentiful regardless and no boss fights gonna last longer than 4 minutes, and the fact that the only drawback is so easily subverted doesnt make it a good thing when the subversion isnt as fun as the alternative of just not having a time limit in the first place.
I would bet for a Talisman instead of a great rune, farming runes are boring Imo. And for such fun thing, better to always have It.
@@JoseViktor4099 To each there own, I'd rather give up the great rune slot than the talisman slot, since there isnt any great rune that synergizes with Deflection anyways, but there are PLENTY of talismans that compliment blocking, guard countering and critical hits

Is high Endurance necessary when I'm countering without the deflecting tear. I'm using the Curseblade's cirque, they have 49 guard and I equip the shield talisman.
Hmm without the deflect tear you'll perform a simple guard, so Cirques will take heavy endurance damage even with the greatshield talisman, you'll likely be guard-broken in a couple hits from most attacks
@@Jordien yeah, for a normal guard counter build it's better to go the greatshield route, or at least a fully upgraded brass shield with barricade shield to top it off, and also it's worth looking at the hammer class, they deal 39-40 stance damage on a GC with cragblade and are really fast.

Yeah I figured a shield with barricade would be better, but man the 4 hit counter attack of the bhb is just too good to pass on that, with a shield it's only 2 hit.
@@Jordien yeah hammer really shredded through my blocks even with the talisman and putting points on endurance doesn't really matter at some point ill stick with to 35 or maybe 40 but not higher than that.
