I was using xgen for the first time for an assignment in my simulations class, this has saved my life, your tutroital is so well done, still holds up in Maya 2025
@@romanticide_art my professor really liked it. Moving onto do looser curls. Next semester I’m taking a portfolio prep class and figure out I love xGen enough to do hair for a whole semester
Thank you for this. I'm trying to follow along, but I ran into some issues. I did all my strands first then added hair, but some strands have hair, and others don't, or they are poking into the character mesh. Then I figured I just do a few first, add a new description and do some more. I'm currently doing the first 3 strands and it's going fine but my hair isn't as thick as yours. I don't know what's happening. At 10:00 timestamp, mine isn't as thick as yours and I followed every step.
when you say thick, do you mean it's not as dense? this could be due to many things, but first off you wanna check if your scalp mesh has proper UVs? If you start a brand new description, then place a few guides, then generate hair, does it behave as expected?
@romanticide_art Yes, the scalp has proper UV. I added new strands, and they worked fine, but don't look as dense as yours. I increased my density, but then they don't look like hair anymore, and yours looked thick enough with just the density of 1. I wish I could show you a picture of what I mean.
@ My major issue is one of the strands having more hair than the others. I am trying it again right now and one strand has way more hair than the others.
@ if you don't have density maps or any form of input controlling density of the hairs, then something may be wrong with your setup. Did you make sure your meshes are to-scale? as in they should be roughly the same as real world space. You could also record the issue to your own channel and i can have a look!
Awesome Tutorial ! One question though When you generate your hair it grows around the guide in a circular pattern, but when i generate hair, the result is flat hair around the guide, not circular like yours around the guide. Any way around this. Please help
Wicked breakdown. ^^ Makes me wonder how it'd look converted into interactive groom & exported into UrE5. I still havn't looked into how heavy that type of newer groom workflow is. Anyone know?
Hi, yes, in fact I think it is always good to convert to interactive groom for ease of use. You should have a separate Maya file just for legacy Xgen. I've exported all the grooms (and it was quite heavy) into Unreal. I've not yet seen how it interacts with Lumen; this will be key. Right now, the alembic cache workflow isn't perfect. I think I will do a tutorial for this :)
Hey amazing tutorial. while creating the full hair I realized that xgen doesn't create hair on some of the guides, have you experienced this? what could be the solution
//Warning: line 1: XGen(2): Zeroing a pixel in map since all points were disqualified. I am getting this error while doing the guides for clumping... HAAAALLPP!!! :"[
Hey, you'd need the groom and the bind mesh. I would like to share all the files in the tutorials i make, I'll look into how to prepare this. maybe via gumroad.

Thank you. Amazing quality. I am creating game in Ancient Egypt, and trying to figure out how to make Dreadlock Wigs. This video should help.
Good luck! play with your settings and always save your guides as curves :P
Really cool, thanks a lot for that!
This is great, thanks!
thank you! amazing work!
amazing tutorial!
Thank you so much
Awsome, thanku
very good brother. I like last one problem in render how you solved
Blender’s Hair Curves let you do this procedurally now. And pose/animate them, as well.

@romanticide_art Nothing of the sort and yes, I believe it's up to scale. I'd make a recording right away and show you
Amazing tutorial 🙏💕
Wanted to ask if you might know a way to make appropriate hair cards for these

is there anyway to get files from you to try implementation into Unreal engine 5? Thank you.
