Hi Adam and Madalyn, the best spots in Albuquerque for home made from scratch are - El Modelo, their tamales and carne adovada are second to none. My family and I ate at Cocina Azul recently and thought the food lacked flavor. I heard from some friends that live in Albuquerque that Frontier, El Pinto, High Noon and Duran Central Pharmacy are good places to eat.
Interesting. We’re surprised you thought the flavor was lacking, it was full of flavor when we visited. Frontier is a fun stop but its a bit of a college dive. Would love to visit New Mexico again soon!
I love huevos rancheros, christmas, and make sure you get red chile and cheese on the papas (fried potatoes)! Side of sour cream. Cafe Azul or Monroes are both great places to eat in Albuquerque, but there are so many more.
Hi, You did hit a variety of food in NM. It was fun watching you get so excited about all the Chile, I guess we take it for granted. But The true NM food was at Cocina Azul. The others were Mexican, and Navajo tacos are not really tacos. lol. Kinda hard to explain differences but when you grow up here you just know. Each year when I can, I return home for the Green Chile harvest. 300 lbs. of XXXHot Hatch, roasted and then dehydrated on the family ranch, when dried about 100 lbs. That way when I return to California, I have my daily dose. Green Chile Stew, Sopapillas, both dessert and stuffed with beans, rice and meat, I'll take them either way. A little aside about Sopapillas, as many of the first Spanish settlers in New Mexico were descendants of Sephardic Jews from Spain, it is a Jewish dessert in Spain and Greece called Bumuellos. While the traditional Mexican Chile Relleno is easy to find in New Mexico our version, usually only found at home is a chuck roast boiled with spices, and after it's cooked put through a meat grinder mixed with copped green chiles, and some egg. They are rolled into football shaped balls (albondigas) about the size of a golf ball. Dredged in flower then dunked in the same egg batter Mexican Rellenos are dipped in and deep fried. Served hot or cold, they are very New Mexican. Last but not least, Bizcochitos, an Anise flavored cookie which is the official State Cookie of New Mexico

Must learn to cook. Its the only way. Make your salsa, You can try some of the Cuban or Puerto Rican markets for chilis. Roast your chili's on an outdoor grill, wrap, steam, peel, chop. Then make some tortillas if you can't find them at a market. Add some refried beans. Shredded cheese. You can make green chile salsa, stew, or just plain. There are a thousand recipes for salsa. I like mine with chopped RIPE tomatoes, Seeded Serranos, garlic, red onion, cilantro, lime juice, salt. Don't rub your eyes. 😂 you can make a different salsa with the small canned chipotles.
