I use the HD Retrovision cable with a RetroTink and the picture quality is fantastic, with no lag at all (other than what the monitor/tv already has). This Hyperkin cable looks about the same quality as the Pound cable that came out recently, though it at least lets you set a 4:3 aspect ratio.

I have tried the Hyperkin and also noticed smoothing which I didn't like. If I try the HD Retrovision cable, is it fine to connect it directly to my plasma hdtv component inputs, or do I need a scaler like a retrotink in between?
The HD retrovision cables do not do any upscaling, they simply give you component video output from your system and your television. One thing that you need to do before you purchase them is verify whether or not your TV can handle 240p signal. HD retrovision has a test listed on their website for you to run through to check and see your television's compatibility.
Hi, how did you record your footage? I just got my HD Retrovison yesterday and hadn't realized it wasn't compatible with my El Gato. I really want to record footage with my Genesis though. Was it the OSSC?
I don't quite understand your question. The HD Retrovision cables are component output, so you couldn't go into the HDMI of the Elgato, so you need a component to HDMI of some sort. I was using an OSSC at the time, but recommend the RetroTink 5x instead.
Hello.Love your stream. I wondered if you can help me with this? I purchased an OG Sega Master System 2 modded with Yellow/Red/White RCA terminals. So glad I've finally got my SMS working on HDTV, but I was a little disappointed with the picture - colourful but a bit soft and blurry. Do you think the HD Retrovision cable would improve this for me? And also, would I need the OSSC too? Where do you buy these things? Cheers! :)
Hi Roxo! Would you compare the hyperkin cable with a scart+ossc solution in DREAMCAST too? For dream its another model (connection in dreamcast its specific). I´m a little confused about what i need buy. Tks
I don't have a SCART cable for the Dreamcast, just the VGA Cable. I also don't have the Hyperkin HDMI cable. If you want to reach out to Hyperkin and ask them if they'd like to send us one for review we can at least compare to VGA!
So I have an N64 and a gamecube, along with a 4k tv (no av input) I was wondering what would be the best solution for me to be able to play them without horrible quality:)
For the Gamecube, either the Carby or the GCHD MkII would be the best solution, IF you have the digital outputs. For the N64, if it has an NS1 serial number you can install Voultar's RGB Mod board and use a SCART Cable if your TV had one. Otherwise, HD Retrovision Component video cables into a RetroTink 2x would work very well too!
So I have a Sega Genesis 2. I want to play on an hdtv. I just want to plug and play. Should I go with the Hyperkin hdmi, HD Retrovision component, or go with the MegaRetron HD system? Without an OSSC or any kind of upscaler
The Mega Retron looks a lot better. I actually posted a video just around the first of the year comparing the Mega Retron HD, HD Retrovision Cables and the Gamerz Tek Minigen HD, you can see the difference. If you have NOTHING, the Mega Retron HD is a good way to get into it.

And it's not the Pinout that's different on the adapter cable, it's the connector type that's wrong. What a laughable oversight by a company such as this to release a product that is just plain wrong. The Genesis uses a V style connector while they included a U style connector instead. Completely inexcusable.
The HD Retro vision cables are not compatible with a lot of modern 4k tv's. On my LG C9, the colors won't display correctly when using with my OSSC, in either YPBR or RGB mode. Get the Retro Gaming cables UK scart cable. Another negative about the OSSC is that it loses sync from time to time, resulting in a few seconds of blackness, that can ruin your game. The Hyperkin cables are actually pretty decent for the money, if you're not anal about video quality.
I will agree that they don't have 100% compatibility, but if you are going through an OSSC or RetroTink that would eliminate the issue as you're taking component and changing to HDMI. Also, I have only run into the loss of sync on Nintendo consoles for some reason, my Sega consoles don't have an issue.
Dude, compared to HD Retrovision the Hyperkin is garbage. Just watch your video to see that. Anyone who watches your video will never buy the Hyperkin.
Not true. The Hyperkin has is place for budget conscious consumers who just want to connect via HDMI. Is it the best signal option, no, but Hyperkin doesn't even claim that. For under $40 you get an ok experience, but of course a 3x price solution is going to look better
@@RoXolid, retrogamers who actually play their old consoles want quality and this Hyperkin doesn't show it. I'm sure they prefer to invest a little more to have more quality, so they might prefer to use a RetroTINK transcoder or HD Retrovision itself to have that quality.
I've talked to many people at conventions, and for a lot of them they are just looking for convenience at a low cost. They know and understand that there are better options out there, but for a good number, these are good enough. For me, no, clearly, but there is a demographic that these are perfectly fine for.
Why? As long as people are enjoying playing what does it matter how they play? For some people this is sufficient. Others, it's not. That's why choice is a great thing!

If you're not that big of a graphics nut and just want to be able to hook up your console easily and for cheap, I really don't see why the Hyperkin isn't the greater value.
Bottom line is this is better than a standard HDMI conversion as it's using the RGB signal out of the system which is very nice as it's the best signal you can get out of these old consoles, however the conversion is done very poorly and the colors are off. Still, it isn't bad for $30. However, the Pound Cable's which are basically the exact same thing however they are actually better and are the same price, so you're much better off going with those instead of the Hyperkin cables.
The OSSC is the one doing the magic here, not the Retrovision cable. This can be a bit misleading.
Not entirely. The Hyperkin cable is promoting a 720P output, so the OSSC is putting the HD Retrovision cables on an equal playing field. Even with passthrough selected the HD Retrovision cable still look better.
Right now the HDMI cable is 25 bucks on ebay. Just get that. It looks fine
¿Finally Which is the best?
The HD Retrovision cables will look better but are a lot more expensive

Hyperkin hate this video… lol
Not at all, these are different products for different consumers
For me, no, clearly, but there is a demographic that these are perfectly fine for.
its sad people prefer price over quality
Why? As long as people are enjoying playing what does it matter how they play? For some people this is sufficient. Others, it's not. That's why choice is a great thing!
@@RoXolid because with cheap cables like that people will never know how genesis rgb signal is super good and sharp. One of best rgb signals over consoles
You're missing the greater point, this cable is for people who don't even know what RGB is. This is for the person that will look at it and be like "Cool, I can hook my system up with HDMI instead of RCA jacks!". I appreciate the RGB output, clearly since I have the cables and OSSC. But not everyone wants or needs that expense. Is it how I'm going to play my system? For the most part, no, but there will be a time when I will use it due to the convenience.
Yes give me some money please and I would love to buy the optimal set up.
I like your presentation but too much repetitiveness in your narrative. You have 13 minutes of footage of which less than 5 minutes is informative.
Thanks for the feedback, always working to improve!
@@RoXolid Are you going to compare the Rad2x from the UK (retrogamingcables.co.uk)?
Not sure, I'm debating it. If CastlemaniaGames picks it up and it's available in the states maybe.
@@RoXolid you only buy from the United States? What if the products you review are a meer shadow of the rad2x? That means your advertising a 2nd grade product. I have 2 retrovision cables, the snes one didnt work out of the box and the video quality wasn't great on my TV. The hyperkin cable for genesis was better. The rad2x will be a further upgrade again I'm sure.
@@atomiswave1971 Did you ever reach out to the HD Retrovision guys about your issues? I'm sure they would take care of you, their customer service is exceptional. Also, I have the Hyperkin Genesis cable, Insurrection Industries SCART cable and the HD Retrovision Component cables and the Hyperkin HDMI cable easily provides the lowest quality image simply due to the signal it's tapping into.
Multiple systems = OSSC
Throw that into your comparison!
Not always, and not for all budgets. Use both a Retro Tink 2x and my OSSC. My RetroTink tends to work better with my SNES Jr and N64, where I get audio driop outs with my OSSC.
Dude, it's not a fucking filter. It's just a worse conversion quality is all it is. Not a filter. No idea why you're saying that. That and the Hyperkin cable has very bad color conversion, the colors are definitely off. I would highly recommend the Pound cables instead as they don't have the same color issues.
This should be a 90 second video not 12 minutes. Get to the side by side comparison and stop babbling about the neutron found in helium bullshit to make 10 minute mark. This is the second video you made on these cables.
I wanted to show a variety of consoles and examples of common games. Also, I was asked by many in the original video for a comparison. I look forward to seeing your take on the subject.
@@RoXolid I'm saying trim the fat...channel intro is 10 seconds...video subject intro maybe 2 minutes ....side by side comparison for 3 to 5 minutes...end.
No need to babble on to make a 10 minute video on a 3 minute subject. All your videos are way beyond necessary of explaining - its not only your channel I am pointing out, its YT channels as a whole. I just left a comment because I like your channel but get tired of searching for the quality content I watch the video for - in an ocean of fluff bloated to get ads at a 10 minute mark.
So a few things. One, I don't produce video content to hit a time. Do I ramble, sure, but its what I do, it's the personallity I bring. Some like it, some don't. Secondly, you can fast forward and rewind to see content you want, I personally do it all the time. Finally, while you may not like the additional stuff, others certainly do. I'd rather have the content there for those who enjoy it than to cut the daylights out and remove all personallity.
