Great video. I just did the front-right inner and outer on my 2004 Silverado 1500 using this video. Borrowed the tie-rod tool from the auto parts store. Thanks a million!
Hey I have a 04 Silverado 1500 too and I can't get my passenger side inner tie rod to come off any suggestions, it doesn't just turn like in the video.
Thank you for the helpful video! I wish I would have found your video before I ordered my inner tie-rod ends, because I ordered the 4WD ones and not the ones you have.
Awesome video. I also thought my truck was special being that it does not have an idler arm or pitman arm. Unfortunately Amazon sold me the wrong inner tie rods. Thank You
just need a big pipe wrench to remove the old one. I used a 1 1/2" claw with a 1/2" torque wrench to reinstall. skinny zip ties work the best for the inner rubber boot. Moving the rack side to side made it much easier to work on the inner tie rod end.
Omfg! Thanks for this video. I have seen so many videos and I couldn’t find any video that could help because my truck had that pink over and I totally thought my park was unique until I saw it was the same. I thought I was never going to be able to remove my tie rod. Thanks
I THINK he means making a small physical mark on both the tie rod end and the steering rack so you'll know if it moves in the future but im not positive..
Hes not making a mark, he pushed the included lock washer into place using a chisel. I searched these comments for the same question you had, i had no idea either!
What happens if you do not reinstall the plastic cover over the inner? I'm a noob an just replaced my tie rods but i cut the cover off because i couldn't get it to slide back
Gracias espero y veas my respuesta
There is an indentation in the tie rod, you hit the lock washer with the chisel to stake the washer into that indentation. It's an extra layer of protection. A mechanical lock to prevent the tie rod from unscrewing.
Greetings and thanks for the video. But now, what do you mean "use a chisel to stake the tie rod to the rack" @ 4:29?? How could you assume a good number of us know what that means (and without including that part visually in the video)? It would be much appreciated if not too much trouble, you could explain that left out step. Thanks again for the other parts of the vid.
You can ignore that. Just torque it down to the specs your truck requires I think mine was 90 ft lbs, been driving it a month now over 60 miles a day almost 2,000 miles, I had to Google what it meant to do that, and its unecessary
2wd truck? Put a floor jack under the lower control arm, remove the from shock, take the upper ball joint loose, remove the outer tie rod from the spindle, slower lower the jack, spring will pop out, be careful, it's under a lot of tension.
If you need to torque the inner tie rod and don't have the special tool. Just put on the new jam nut and tighten the old jam nut to it then put on your socket with your torque wrench and tighten to torque specs.
Thats what i was wonder? He showed us how to use an impact to remove and install a tire every detail of it, but didnt show removing and installing the band clamp which is a major part of the repair.
Will a bad inner tie rod cause the wheel to feel like its loose even though it isnt?..I changed both tie rod ends..new ball joints..rotated tires..new u joints on main drive line...but my front driver side feels like its shaking only at speeds of 30 or higher..I dont feel it in the steering wheel..just below my feet when driving..it will sometimes stay there and also go away and come back..is it shocks? Inner tie rod? I believe hub is fine last time I checked about 3 weeks ago. Any help would be great..05 chevy silversdo 1500 crew cab is what I drive..also the driver side tire before being rotated started cupping on the outside..I'm thinking shocks until I seen this video. Thanks again
With the truck in the air, can you move the wheel if you grab it at 12 and 6 and try to move it? What about at 3 and 9? Usually cupping is caused by a bad shock.
MrSubaru1387 I do know last I checked it didnt move but if it did that would be a bad wheel bearing. I'm going to check again today to see if the control arm bushings are good and same with then torsion bar bushings. If you go to my page I posted 2 videos last night from my action camera (gopro wannabe)
so i lifted the drivers side and its tight other than a little movement from upper ball joint...also found out my newly replaced tie rod end blew out on the upper side of the ball joint. so ill warranty that....lifted the passenger side and its very wobbly..like half inch movement at 12 and 6 and all around...ball joints look good though and same with the new tie rod end on that side. so i believe the passenger wheel hub which i replaced in oct 2014 is in need of a replacement again...to bad its warranty was a year only..surprised the driver side hub is still good..
Need some help! I have a 2011 Silverado 1500. The inner tie rod is Completely stuck. It will not rotate off or anything. I've tried twice and given up on different days. Even with the channel locks it will not twist off. I kept the old inner on and replaced the outter. The inner is bad and needs to go. Help??
MrSubaru1387 I tried the inner tie rod tool. Mines different then the once shown in the video. I'm using the big OEM Green one. I might try the once used in the video since it's different but idk. It's so stuck on there is Slightly moving the racks when really pushed. I don't know what to do with it.
My clamp came off the side where the inner tie rod is and the boot is sliding with the outer tie rod my mechanic says he can't do anything until Saturday but it's just a dust shield nothing to worry about he said but is this true will it be ok to drive for 3 days I don't want to damage my rack and pinion
As long as you aren't driving through rain or super dusty roads, you should be just fine. The rack has seals to prevent debris from getting in. The boot mainly keeps the inner tie rod joint clean.
Chevy Silverado Forum says Clinton says inner tie rods should be torqued to 81 you say 89 and the Chilton Manual for Chevy Silverado from 07- 2013 I have says 74-foot pounds? Why all the different numbers?
It's an inner tie rod tool. You can rent them from your local auto parts store. Lisle 46800 Master Inner Tie Rod Tool Set www.amazon.com/dp/B005ADY9FE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_F.3zBb1B38FC4
This is the clearest look at the inner tie rod, removal and reinstallation procedure on UA-cam. Thank you for uploading.

Just had mine done - both sides inner and outer tie rods - 2007 Silverado Classic 2500HD Diesel. Real tight steering now.
You are a master in your field and a saint for sharing your knowledge!
Great video, good camera angles, no mindless chatter.
Best video yet on UA-cam for inner tie rod. Helped a lot! Thanks

Great video time to do mine, yours also point out my alignment guys ain't lying about my tie rods.
Straight and to the point. No BS. Thanks.
You're welcome 👍🏻
Can you better explain what you mean by staking the tie rod? Theres hardly any info online about it and theres no lockwasher to "stake" into the rack.
Stellar vid if only more people made vids that made sense
Rip to the world
Well done bro thanks
Man I was tripping with the lill pink cover I was trying to pull it cut smh lol thanks for the video help out alot

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck with your repair.

Excellent video
Everything I needed and nothing I didn’t
Wow great job
Thanks man
And you didn’t even have to say a word!!!!
lol
Dose the old ones really come off that easy? I expected more force or tie rod tool to be needed to loosen the old one ?
What does he mean use a chisel to stake the tie rod to the rack, and how do you do it? Other than that great video?
There is an indentation in the tie rod, you hit the lock washer with the chisel to stake the washer into that indentation. It's an extra layer of protection. A mechanical lock to prevent the tie rod from unscrewing.
Oh, ok I see ..thank you for the info and replying.

Man great vid bro. Striate to the point best vid on youtube so far. Quick question do u have any advice how to replace the coils in the front
The coil springs or ignition coils?
Coil spring.
Man i couldn't figure how to take the inner rod off at all im replacing everything on my truck upper lower hubs. Installing a 6inch lift myself

If you need to torque the inner tie rod and don't have the special tool. Just put on the new jam nut and tighten the old jam nut to it then put on your socket with your torque wrench and tighten to torque specs.
Awesome video just wish the boot removal was a little more clearer
Right
Thanks alot for the video!!!!
+danny cabral you're welcome!
What is the use a chisel to stake to the rack mean? What’s the process to do that?
Is it necessary to put a wrench on the outer end when tightening the jamb nut?
Bravo
What is the tool did you use and size on part 2:44. As well for , 4:15
Ok but how do i refill the boot covering the inner tie rod with grease??
What pliers did yo loosen it with ???????
How did you remove and install the clamp
Thats what i was wonder? He showed us how to use an impact to remove and install a tire every detail of it, but didnt show removing and installing the band clamp which is a major part of the repair.
why did you remove the tire?
Did it make a big difference in ride quality? I’m suspecting I need to replace mine
Sloppy tie rods probably didn't have good "ride quality" you know.

Yup. Movement when pulling from 12 and 6 is definitely a wheel bearing/hub assembly.
Torque spect for the inner tie rod??
Clean video Tks !! Change your rotors and pads !! :) ))))

You've tried the inner tie rod tool? Sprayed with some penetrating fluid? Not really advised, due to harming steering rack seals, but heat may help.

Marvin Wilkins I used regular Advance Auto brand 5w-30 oil. I add in a couple ounces of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer and a Subaru oem oil filter.

MrSubaru1387 where did you purchase your oil filter and what do you think of high mileage synthetic blends
it's the same procedure for all silverado trucks?

I called autozzone and the parts will cost $121 inner/outer... $243 for both sides
i order mine of ebay for $27 bucks all four parts
What tool did you use to tighten?
To tighten what?
MrSubaru1387 the inner tie rod looked like some special socket & wrench can you please link me the tool, thanks
