@STORM LORD It is still possible to make that bonus work. Pick Mayans as your teammate, full wall like a puny, honourless scum and continuosly dump all of your res to your ally. Mayans can steamroll everything alone if they strike fast and hard. Incas, on the other hand have an absolute rubbish farce of a "bonus" which only messes up the build orders as farms seed faster than Horse Collar coming in.
@STORM LORD Actually, no. The saracen team bonus is situational, but it can win games. People just misunderstand it. It doesn't turn your archers into siege units, but it helps them break through walls in feudal and early castle. That can make a massive difference. There are definitely several team bonuses worse than Saracens (Magyars, Ethiopians, Incas, Berbers...). Saracen is somewhere in the middle.
TBF, That can help archer civs a lot if the player wants to try and mainline archers. Particularly Chu-Ko-Nu. That might only be a +1 vs. Buildings but that can add up quickly.
Saracens bonus is pretty situational, but it's not necessarily a very bad one. Vietnamese's real team bonus is probably worst as a team bonus (not a regular bonus), because you absolutely never make Skirms in imp. If you're forced to build skirms in imp, you pretty much already are in such a dire situation that you're about to lose. Still, it may be useful in 1v1. Incas' however is utterly useless. +0.5% farming thanks to faster building farms is crap.
@ Look at any pro-game, and come back tell me there was elite skirms done in imp for a good reason. In a teamgame, the answer to archers are onagers and heavy cavalry, never skirms.
Your intro is great but i also really like the music played during no.1 in all these ranking videos. Its a like fun and cool track and love how it transitions from the regular soundtrack that you use.
I really like how you make your videos. The things like the cat at the beginning, the elephant facts or the way the scouts run over the number of explored tiles. ALl that isn't much but ads a lot of entertaining to the videos.
Berbers need an honorable mention. Their castle age unique tech make the castles on your team work 25% faster. Which if your in a team game where gold is less of an issue means your pumping out some of your best units faster and getting trebuchets faster.
0:10 yeah. I'm a 100% noob or maybe it's just that it was my first game in AOE2 DE ever and i havent been playing AOE2 for a long long time (however i was always watching your videos) :) So i was playing 3vs3 and got destroyed quite fast, and i was left with 1 unit - starting scout so i started to patrol map with it, atacking some enemies structures and running away (to make them dissoriented) a few times i warned my teammates about goths building many barracks next to their (my allies) bases etc. So bassicly we won and i was so happy when my teammates thanked me for all that information because "it saved us" :) Everyone, remember, never give up in team matches when your teammates are still fighting
starting carto of Portuguese allows to make early team wall and shared scouting of the map including enemy locations. can even orchestrate a dark age scout rush in enemy flank together. all the while the team without Portuguese needs constant flarings and chats still get to feudal then market up to get to the free carto. they also ends up with individual or unnecessary and faulty suboptimal wallings till then.
I think there is one team bonus that you overlooked, it's the Portuguese free cartography from Dark Age. I would argue it's probably second only to the Spanish team bonus (obviously the strongest in the game), and definitely way ahead of the Vietnamese team bonus. The vietnamese bonus is only situational and requires a lot more communication from the players (which is not bad in itself), and only comes handy in the very early game. Meanwhile, having free cartography from Dark Age is super useful to take better fights together (you can see each other so you don't even need to be perfect communicators), synchronize scouting, and save up on the market before the later stages of the Castle Age. Doing Stable + Market up as a pocket player has been popular at high level for a while, a testament on the importance of having cartography to avoid taking bad fights. Being able to save the wood on the market is yet another plus of the Portuguese team bonus as your early boom in Castle Age will hence be slightly faster.

I'm sort of surprised you didn't mention the Berbers. They have a unique mounted skirmisher, which has it's uses. But they also have that technology that increases castle production speed for the entire team. There are a lot of fantastic unique units where their one major downside is they just take too long to mass.
Genitours are a nice unit, but mostly useless in a team game because you don't want to be making many trash units anyway. And the 25% castle speed is nice, but not up at the top.
I agree with all of them but I would change Vietnamese with Portuguese. Free carto without market and from dark age I think it's more powerfull than knowing enemies' positions
A lot of black forest games already comes with allied vision plus the allied vision mod is used across some games already, so the team bonus becomes nothing
I was waiting for the Aztecs, waiting, waiting, then wondering why they didn't even get an honourable mention... Then I remembered that was Aztec only, not allies. Derp.
If you're referring to 33% more Relic income, that *is* their team bonus. Then again, a maximum of 200 gold per minute for the team (since the base rate is 30, Aztecs raise it to 40 and there are 5 relics on a map) isn't very enticing for team games given the availability of trade. It's admittedly of greater value in a 1v1.
In the Montezuma campaign, in the level called Quetzalcoatl, is there a way to save your ally. I have tried so many times but failed. Could you try because you are a better player than I am (and probably smarter.)
Now that i think about it in a 4vs4 game knowing each enemy location can justify and maybe even unlock deer-pushing for all your team. As the time saved scouting mindlessly would be used to would deer. And scout enemy after as you will get to them in a min knowing yheir locations
@@kingseirios4277 Saracen team bonus is definitely not among the worst 5. It can be quite valuable to break through walls in feudal/early castle, which can swing entire games. People just misunderstand it. Ethiopians, Magyars, Malay, Incas, Franks are definitely worse just off the top of my head.
Back in the day Spanish was considered number three. The Mongol bonus smooths out the opening by reducing the chance you'll take too long to find your sheep. The Chinese bonus kicks in as soon as your first farms would have expired. The Spanish bonus was strong, but while gold piles are still available trade carts were still not as good as villagers so it isn't really doing a lot until gold starts to run out and having an early advantage to snowball with was considered better.
@El Bottoo It is possible that the map gen scripts have changed to have less wood, but in the gaming zone era people weren't worried about wood running out. Spending less pop space on keeping gold units in the field instead of trash was more important.

The funny thing is, the saracens team bonus is actually considered to be one of the best, by pros. Allows a group of crossbows to *Easily* bypass pallisade walls, in no time. Very dangerous. They also play on very open maps, which makes investing into stone walls to be generally considered very expensive, and something you want to avoid.
GREAT video, this is what I wished to discuss, in fact 10 days ago I was in the Steam forums, discussing this team bonus thing..., So,, there was a guy who claims THE SARACENS bonus is cool, I disagreed with him then, I really hate the SARA bonus. It sucks.
I think the combined effect of paper money, the imperial skirmisher, and seeing where your enemies are should have bumped the Vietnamese up a bit. It's like they made that civilization super weak in the early game and balanced it out with team bonuses. Surprised the Berbers didn't get an honorable mention for their Genatoir and faster castle operations.
I'm not sure I would rank the Huns bonus higher than other +20% production, if only because it's the only one that is literally useless to certain teammates.
Their team bonus is still as bad as always, only the Saracens Player get the +3 on his/her Archers/Cavalry Archers (+4 with Team bonus) The team only get the +1, wich is really only usefull for Mayans as cherry on top or the Chinese, because of their unique unit
You should make 2 videos with top 5: "Easiest" Civilization and Top 5 "Most complicated" civilizations! Would make a good addition for newer players :)
Hi Spirit of the Law. Question for a video I'd love to see: if you made AoE2, what balance changes would you make for competitive games? How aggressive would you be? Personally I think upgrades to ubiquitous units like bloodlines, squires, and loom are too good.
i really don't know, why everybody is hating so much on the saracens team bonus. I mean, yeah, it's situational. But busting a palaside-wall with 20 archers at double the usually speed can be gamedeciding. the inca team bonus however is literally useless. you get like 10 extrafood per 5000 collected food from farms. Congrats to that.
I agree on the Saracens' bonus being situationally useful but disagree that the Incas' bonus is completely useless (though agree it could have been better too). I'd say it's more about getting the initial farms out as quickly as possible and start harvesting (assuming, say, you're still waiting for meat to be dropped off from hunting a boar and manual dropping off won't give you 50 Food, or haven't found one at all), which can carry *some* convenience value in the early game. Dropping off the first batch of food from a farm 3 seconds too late in the Dark Age might mean missing on a villager. It is very unnoticeable in the late game but possibly tangible early.
Here's an interesting one in terms of team bonus synergy. Huns + Britons + Indians + Saracens(yes, it has Saracens in it). Huns team bonus helps Indians(and Saracens), Indians team bonus helps Saracens, Saracens team bonus helps Britons and Britons team bonus helps Huns. Huns go Cav Archers, Britons go Xbow and the other two go Camels. Briton archers with Indian Camels will easily bust through walls and create havoc.
In general, map matters more than civ matchups in isolation. Still, Chinese, Spanish, Indians and Mongols seems pretty strong. Trade bonus, farm bonus, Chu-ko-nus, Imperial Camels, Elite Mangudai, fast SO, bombard towers, and Paladins.
Spirit, what do you think of the Bulgarian team bonus which is gonna be blacksmith working 50% faster for the entire team? I honestly expect to see from you if you'll review the new Definitive Edition civs with no patience.
The team bonuses have good benefits for team games, but do they act as civ bonuses in single player or 1v1 or in campaigns where you only have enemies and no allies?
In my opinion, I think the Vietnamese have the best team bonuses, as they give their allies both the imperial skirmisher, and paper money, and they know where everyone lives at the start of the game. That’s effectively three team bonuses!
Hello! To make use of team bonuses, I need team 1st. Can anyone tell me how can I join online games in AoEII? Should I buy HD version on steam? HD Version with all the DLC? Or mb there is some non-steam version where the competitive scene goes on?
I have a question, if a player is removed from a game, does the team bonus stay for the entire game? Say the Spanish player gets removed during the Castle age, but the game goes on, do the others still receive a trade bonus?
Yes. Team bonuses are applied at the start of the game. Changing diplomacy doesn't do anything either, your new allies don't get your tb, and the old ones will retain it.

Spirit, what do you think of the Bulgarian team bonus which is gonna be blacksmith working 50% faster for the entire team? I honestly expect to see from you if you'll review the new Definitive Edition civs with no patience.
Have you done a top 5 turtle / defensive civs?
The team bonuses have good benefits for team games, but do they act as civ bonuses in single player or 1v1 or in campaigns where you only have enemies and no allies?
In my opinion, I think the Vietnamese have the best team bonuses, as they give their allies both the imperial skirmisher, and paper money, and they know where everyone lives at the start of the game. That’s effectively three team bonuses!
BTW, best elephant fact ever may be?
So, if, say, the Spanish player was defeated early on, would the team bonus persist, or does it drop after the player is defeated?
The song at the end is awesome. What song is it?
Hello! To make use of team bonuses, I need team 1st. Can anyone tell me how can I join online games in AoEII? Should I buy HD version on steam? HD Version with all the DLC? Or mb there is some non-steam version where the competitive scene goes on?
Could you make a video on strategies and combat?
Can you make a video for building placement and walling?
How exciting, my boss just gave me a bonus!
*opens envelope*
'your stables work 20% faster'
...
allways good videos .
Anyone knows whether a team bonus will also be applied in 1v1 game (or 1v2 or 1v3 and so on)?
I feel like the VIetnamese one is not much good if you’re not planning to rush, or you’re to slow to rush.
Wait...do eagle scouts benefit from Hun line of sight team bonus?
The cats in the intro 😂😂🤣
I have a question, if a player is removed from a game, does the team bonus stay for the entire game? Say the Spanish player gets removed during the Castle age, but the game goes on, do the others still receive a trade bonus?
Yes. Team bonuses are applied at the start of the game. Changing diplomacy doesn't do anything either, your new allies don't get your tb, and the old ones will retain it.
I bet this has been revealed before, but is SotL from Massachusetts?
Lot (lawt), shot (shawt), etc.
