Worst Indycar Season Ever?

  • In Indycar, you never know who's going to win. Even the teams with the lowest budgets can have bright moments, adding to the unpredictability factor, something that is hugely appealing to new people watching the series. That doesn't mean though, that every team has a smooth year. One team in 2015, would have quite the year to forget.

Tristan Vautier is perhaps the most talented forgotten indycar driver of the 2010s. He was among the leading pack of the dangerous affair that was the 2017 Texas 600. He wasn't known for being an oval expert, yet he was in a realistic position to win on speed! To win a pack race on speed!! In a Dale Coyne car!!!

DCR's continued existence is as baffling as it is impressive, I don't think any team has managed to get their foot in the door for a series they took 4 seasons to even consistently qualify, and I think they're safely the highest level racing team in the world who've managed to have a consistent place in professional racing with their type of record. How many teams did they share a field with who where winning races and winning titles who aren't around anymore, either having been bought out by someone else or just shut down entirely? DCR is such an anomaly in racing it's amazing every race fan doesn't know who they are just as a result of it. The only teams older then them in IndyCar are Penske and Foyt, though one thing I did find fascinating comparing the founding dates of the teams is that Arrow McLaren is the only team that was founded during the Split era that was with the IRL that's still around, with the rest being a near even split between CART teams and post-unification teams.

It’s funny, in terms of the business side, the IRL won the war of the split. In terms of influence however, Indycar in its present form is much closer to peak CART right before the split than anything the IRL resembled. This whole decade long war which irreparably damaged the sport, set it back decades, and left it steeped in stagnation all in the name of hubris and ego, and the end result?
A series which is looks and acts exactly as it did three decades ago, but in a weakened state, barely clawing back the ground in a futile attempt to just get back to where they were, let alone move past that. Far less relevant, with far less interest, and a far bleaker outlook. Such a shame. To think what American open wheel racing could’ve been if it was allowed to overtake nascar as it looked like it might, with the recent explosion of F1, it’s not unreasonable to think CART could’ve caught that same momentum at any point in the past 25 years, had it been left untarnished.
For a team to ride those choppy waves for as long as DCR, while barely keeping their head above water for most that time, is super impressive, no doubt.

      @ZontarDow 7 місяців тому +7

@@tylercampbell2362 The IRL didn't really win on the business side, it lost an average of 19 million per year until it finally had a profitable year in 2013 (yes it took that long) and only survived due to the track writing off profits it made from the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400 and other events it hosted to make up the loss, while CART was profitable until 2003.

Dale is a master of keeping his team afloat. It took him 25 years to get his first win. The weird pay drivers, the strange sponsors. Someone needs to make a video about it.

Minardi (now "Racing Bulls" or AlphaTauri) took 3 years to score a point in F1 (debut 1985, took 6th at Detroit 1988). Red Bull bought them out in 2005, which was the 3rd consecutive year of finishing last in the F1 team (constructors) championship. The drug of racing can overwhelm the pain of being last all the time

    • @crystalracing4794

Vettel's win for the Toro Rosso team (the name Red Bull painted over Minardi's name) at 2008 Italy came in their 24th year of operation. So Racing Bulls (Minardi/AlphaTauri/AlphaTauri) are basically the Italian F1 version of Dale Coyne

Seeing James Davison, he was the beneficiary of a bizarre incident at Ohio in an Indy Lights race in 2008. He was running in second as the race was finishing under caution when the leader, Jonny Reid, inexplicably came into the pits on the last lap. It was similar to the late Cale Yarborough in the 1984 Firecracker 400, inadvertently helping Richard Petty get his 200th Cup Series win and Mark Martin in the 1994 Busch series race, the Goody's 250, handing the win to David Green.
In the case of the latter, to his credit, Mark Martin saw the funny side of it, saying:
"I can't believe anybody else would be that stupid! Listen man, I've been pulling for David Green to win for a long time, but not like that!"

This is an interesting video. I get that coyne has had to run a lot of pay drivers to survive so seasons like this will happen, it’s just such a loss to have to ditch Wilson. Huertas and Dracone weren’t good.
I think vaultier was unlucky to just have one full time season. He lost his seat to newgarden (so fair) but I think he deserved a bit more.
Note that coyne are the only team to have still not confirmed either car for 2024, with there only being one other unconfirmed seat on the grid. I’m not expecting much this year tbh.

I always wondered why they put Vautier in the Huertas car instead of just putting Davidson in it. Since Davidson didn't qualify either car, he was going to have to go to the back anyway. Since Vautier qualified the 19 car, I think he could have kept the position he qualified for.

2015-2017 was the manufacturer aerokit era for IndyCar, meaning that Chevrolet-Ilmor and Honda Performance Developments had different approaches to how their respective teams made downforce. The teams are also allowed to develop and adjust their suspension dampers, which can also affect downforce and handling for the cars of each team.
