It's actually quite refreshing to see someone be surprised by the music switch-up rather than the vocal switch-up. Often reactors get so focused on the vocals (incredible as they are, don't get me wrong) they kinda stop paying attention to the music itself. Meanwhile Andy is entirely focused on figuring out the time signature. Love it.
Yeah, I always feel bad people are 100% focused on Tatiana when the band is performing miracles 😢
I couldn't agree with you both more. This band makes metal as whole better. They're a very unique band.
Her accent threw me off at first but after several listens I am getting closer. Tatiana has one of the cleanest growls of anyone I have heard thus far. I'm very new to this genre as I never listened to it much in my younger days. I just figured at 71 years old it was time to open my mind before I lose it.😁😁. Peace✌

it's blaze, not belies. tatiana even said it herself in several interviews, which is weird... because it makes less sense than Belies

the drummer is a classically-trained pianist and was new to the band when they recorded this 😎🤘

He wasn't new to the band, he was a session musician. This is the only album he is on and I don't believe he toured, not positive on that though. He either worked for the studio they recorded in or was brought in for the album. Vladislav Ulasevich joined soon after the albums release. There isn't a single original member in the band anymore. This line up other than the drummer has been together since 2011 though.

Jinjer is known for having very odd and changing time signatures within one song.

Perennial live at Wacken shows her talent well. My favorite performance is Pit of Consciousness live in Kyiv.
You guys should check out her one-take performance of Judgement (& Punishment). Another great track by Jinjer that has some interesting genre elements you might appreciate.
Also, another band that has a similarly talented female vocalist is Morphide. Some good tracks to check out would be Panopticon, or Catharsis. They're really worth a listen, both instrumentally and vocally.

This is why I love when you have Andy on. He's so into the music, and its great when he recognizes the uniqueness of what they are doing musically.

You gotta try some more of their stuff. Try Teacher Teacher, Perinnial (Live at Wakken), Home Back, I Speak Astronomy, Sit Stay Rollover, or Wallflower. Any of them really. Tati is best. Tati is Beast.

the time signature is a byatch to pick up lmao. it fluctuates from 6/8 to 7/8 i think it even goes to a combo of 4/4 and 5/4 at some points. I've been trying to learn the guitar part and it is haaaard to keep to the shifting time signature. It'd be awesome if Andy can react to Teacher Teacher as there's a lot of polyrhythmic stuff going on in that, and Tatiana switches between even more vocal styles too... I think he'd enjoy figuring it out
I'm hearing alternating bars of 3/4 and 4/4 in the verses, and 4/4 in the chorus, just with an extra bar tacked on at the end of the measure. [edit: this is a favorite musical quirk of mine from a lot of 1st & 2nd gen blues music, so my ears perk up whenever I hear it lol]
The initial breakdown with the rimshots is 4/4 with a bit of a push, and then I think it's pretty much 6/8 from the shift in feel straight through to the end. [unless I'm forgetting something in there somewhere]
My music theory is around 25-30 years rusty though, so I'm open to feedback lol
Regarding time signature - Verse starts off in 7/4 then transitions to 3/4. Then the chorus is in 4/4

One could think about learning to understand growling vocals kinda same as learning to understand hyperfast chopping, for an untrained ear both sound incomprehensible, but as you keep at it, soon you start to pick up what is actually going on. Both are absolutely fantastic ways to expand your mind or vocal range.

@@themadcadder4847the googled lyrics for many bands are often nonsense. belies makes for better syntax, a better rhyme (with "life"), better thematic consistency (tough exterior armor contrasts with fragile inner innocence, as life and death contrast in second couplet). but if you can't trust your literary instincts to reach the conclusion that the lyric is exactly what it sounds like, because the booklet lyrics transcribed by ear by some semi-anglophonic hack became the Google official answer and the artist herself barely remembers what she was thinking at the time... well, you don't have to.

I have heard musical breakdowns of the patterns of the musicians. They all change up their rifts throughout the song. They said it was a very unique pattern. It was years ago I saw it. I think he said something about a 7/8 time signature and maybe a 3/4's at times. I have no clue if those are real or what they said. Trying to remember from years ago and I am not trained to understand it and have not looked it up myself enough to explain it. However, I do recognize the shits in the play.

I also think it can drain some of the enjoyment and/or make it harder to make a connection with the song because you are not listening and feeling the song as much as analyzing and contemplating.
