Today I have finish my first ever plastering, and it was exactly like on your video artex ceiling, didn’t do any plastering before and started from the ceiling…I did exactly like on your video first bonding coat and then after few days two coats of plaster multi finish , the most trouble caused drying plaster , as a novice of course it was hard to do whole coat in 1 go so on the end was a bit dry , ceiling had about 10m2 . Your videos are very helpful, it is everything beginner plasterer should know , now we need to just practice practice practice and learn from experience, thank You for your help

Could you do a video of timings. How long after the first coat do you start to flatten? When do you apply the second coat, how long before you flatten that, what timeline do you do each stage of the process?
You can't do it accurately. Every mix is different & you have to wait until it's right. You will learn to get an eye for it quite quickly by trial & error. If you're making it look a mess, it's not ready so give it a bit longer. When it starts to look better with troweling you are at the right time.
Finally plucked up the courage to do an artex ceiling after your “artex ceiling 2”. Great video as this one. Probably wouldn’t have attempted without seeing vids like this. Cheers Blaine
I’ve been plastering 50 years and did my apprenticeship without the help of You Tube. The thing I’ve realised watching these videos is that larger areas are not necssarily more difficult than small ones. Thanks for this. One thing - if your head were about 4 inches closer to the ceiling you would be more comfortable.
Totally agree with you on the speedskim, for any DIYer who has more than one room to do it is a game changer. For the finish and confidence it gives you it’s worth every pound!
@@PlasteringForBeginners I noticed you used the same blue blade for your second flattening, I always use the black one or the metal. I'm not questioning your methods by the way
Stangely my local Selco don't sell the speedskim although they sell many other OX products. One note on artex I have found is tht sometimes the artexing has small stalagmites hanging off the ceiling, especiall on the deeper patterns, so i sometimes have so spend a 1/2 an hour using an old trowel to cut of the longer bits. Keep up your videos - they are a godsend to anyone doing their own work - committed DIYes or younger guys going into the trade.
That it weird. I thought Selco would have been all over it - strange! Yeah that does happen but I try to avoid scraping too much Artex now in case there's any Asbestos in the mix! Thank you very much. I really appreciate your kind words and you watching. Cheers 🍻
hi Blaine, just watched your video. we've just bought a house that needs work and in an effort to save money, im going to attempt to plaster my sons ceiling next week when we get the keys. can I have a break down of the tools you used and brands please? thank you
may i ask, when you take the frog tape off at the end doesnt it leave a rough edge? surely if the first coat was 5mm thick then the final skim how would you finish the edges? brilliant video btw...
Do you have any videos on how to patch up plaster on a ceiling? I have a ceiling that needs patching after a water leak. It’s only about 1m x 1m. Do you use the same process as for a whole ceiling? Thanks
I finding your videos very satisfying im a welder but watching you makes me thinking of changing my profession. Can you just tell on your vid.time between each coat that would help.
You've explained a lot in this video and made it look easy... but I know it isn't! I can do most handyman/DIY tasks with ease but brick laying and plastering are two I shy away from. You've encouraged me to give plastering a go. Just hope my shoulder can take it 🤔
How long after bonding can you plaster over? I have experienced bubbles forming when applying Multifinish over wet bonding, i usually leave a day in-between now. It would be great to bond and skim the same day
I get a good result with just two coats of malty finish. If there is a risk of distemper. I just re-board it. You can get sealers but they take a day to dry and cost more than boards as well as smell of chemicals. Year's ago I made a plastic finishing trowel. But now you can buy them. I think they're brilliant. A good finishing trowel can get you out of trouble as well.
I've been a plasterer for 40 years, when plastering over artex ceilings I have always used a plastic float to level out the first coat after application. If the ceiling is a bumpy bugger I would add a second coat applied with a plastic float. Old school, lol.

Hello! Great video, I’m very new to plastering and am trying to go for a plaster ceiling in a school bus conversion. I know everyone says that plaster is extremely durable, I was wondering if you being someone who knows the product very well, think a plaster ceiling would hold up when driving down bumpy roads or you think it would probably just crack. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated!
Did you PVA between the 1st and 2nd coat of multifinish? Or do you put the 2nd coat up whilst the 1st coat is still drying ? Also can you use SBR instead of PVA? Any difference?
Hi Blane. Love the videos. Did you apply the bonding coat with one mix then flatten and then the 2nd mix and flatten or all in one mix? and did you PVA over the bonding coat or wet it down to slow down the suction on the first skimcoat? I particularly like the tip about working towards the centre light. Many thanks Paul
I all ways PVA artex when bonding but I never PVA bonding when it's still green just put nice skim coat over the bonding and its a treat, does it not bleb when you PVA the bonding coat Matt
I always used to do that but the last few times I've done it the plaster didn't adhere to the Bonding so I always PVA it now. Never with Hardwall but always with Bonding. It works a treat to be fair...gives it a nice key for the skim 👍
You're correct I've been plastering over many artex ceilings for over 30 years and you go over the bonding skim mixture When it starts to pick up Or you could say after a good half hour after you put the speed skim over it Then like you say you don't need to pva it The multi finish should bond perfectly to it In rare cases where you leave the bonding dry for 24 hours then maybe you would need to pva But apart from that you don't need to pva the bonding first coat
One thing never mentioned when plastering a ceiling is arm and shoulder strength. You can't just go straight into large ceilings without practice to build up strength. Technique helps but does not replace basic fitness.
Very good point. I always forget to mention this because I forgot what it was like. Looking back now you're bang on. It does hurt at first so strength is a must!
I've plasterboarded my uneven ceiling and now gonna prep the joints etc... It's going to be wallpapered, however, is the 1st coat adequate for backing paper then wallpaper on ? It's a compromise as I hate artex and it's the closest to a textured finish I suppose. Thanks

Never plaster onto paper pal! It all needs to be stripped back before plastering - I know it's a pain but it needs doing! It doesn't matter. If you're new I'd just wait until the PVA is completely dry to avoid complications 👍
Going to attempt this on pretty much same type of ceiling and size.. First timer! Am I mad? Can you tell me which trowel you use for most of this process in beginning stages.. I'm right in thinking you used Nela FLEX II 16 and then Refina Plaziflex at end??
Hi Blaine, with regards the flexi trowel just how flexible is the black edition in comparison with the Speedflex 11 gold and medi flex. Where does it fit in with these? I’m torn between this and the Speedflex 11. I think the black edition might be Nela’s answer to the Speedflex 3 that Regina offer but I might be wide if the mark. Can’t seem to find this info anywhere so your advice would be appreciated. Thank you or anyone else that can answer this for me
Do you have to use bonding first on an artex ceiling or can you go straight for skimming with multi finish? My mate said you can go straight for 3 coats but I don’t know weather to believe him lol

I watched loads of videos about plastering before I did the bathroom ceiling (not very successful I have to say) I did a wall last week after watching your video and turned out better than I expected bearing in mind my previous experience 😅. I will be giving the bedrooom cealing a go and I was wondering how do you reach it? I am only 5ft and the ladders is not very helpful. Thank you for shearing your knowledge
(I know this post was a while ago, but thought I'd answer as it might help someone)- I'm 5'5" and about to do some plastering, so have bought a work platform with a height of 80cm (800mm) to help reach the ceiling. (I figured it would be much better than going up and down every two seconds with a ladder as it would do my knees in).
Mate I've been plasterer for 20 years i always put a few handfuls of bonding in first coat to get over high spots trust me you will not look back i didn't. 2nd coat just plaster!!
I never thought of doing that. How much bonding would you mix into a full bag of MultiFinish? Is that just for first coat or both? Any help appreciated
Hi Blaine, Recently moved into an older property. The kitchen ceiling has half artex, half woodchip wallpaper. Could I use this same technique to cover it all. Would the bonding coat stick to the old woodchip paper? It's a bugger to get off so wondered if I could avoid any more scraping. Thanks for your videos 👍😊
Hi mate. Unfortunately it needs to be striped back - you can't plaster on any wallpaper. Not even Woodchip. I know it's a bugger but it needs to be removed! Sorry pal and good luck 👍
I believe the bonding seals the surface to prevent all the moisture from getting sucked out of your plaster by the drywall and gives the basecoat of plaster something it can stick to. Lookup plasterweld.
@@PlasteringForBeginners defo having trouble with the multi finish here in wales doing a small man cave today I honestly thought One hit one mix but nope done the ceiling and one bloody wall and it was really pulling less than half hour 😳😳😳
Artex can contain asbestos usually if it was done pre 1960, so you don't want to scrape it back, if the house was built say 1970, then the artex shouldn't have asbestos in it.
Don’t watch your videos to learn but general enjoy watching them keep it up mate 👌🏼 also is that the nela carbon ? If so how you liking it had mine a month
Thanks matey. I really appreciate that! I've had it for roughly 5 months but I've been breaking it in on my rendering jobs. I really like it actually - it's a lovely trowel now it's breaking in.
These plasters from British Gypsum are so weird why are they brown? Are they the same as the white plasters you'd get in other countries? Or is it somehow different? Do they just add coloring to it to make it easier to know what you've plastered?
Hi blaine, roughly how many bags of bonding would you use to cover the artex cieling in a 4m x 3m room I know it wil vary depending on the depth of the artex but I just wanted a ballpark figure ?
@@PlasteringForBeginners amazing video buddy. Watching it all already! Can’t wait until I’m as lean and fit as you to be able to practice consistently. Been doing my hammer curls! In fact, my next workout is in 20 mins…
As a complete DIY and plaster beginner who just now finished skimming my kitchen ceiling these are my experiences from the various tutorial's I watched Firstly I wasn't going to pay money for a mixer just to use it once so I got the ready made plaster which I'm guessing is far wetter/sloppier than what they use in these tutorials as the roller method was useless Second it didn't go on no-where near as smoothly as in this video but I found out later applying a good deal of strength when putting the plaster on helped massively, as I was far to gentle at the start Third the speedskim didn't help at all and strangely left long scratch marks when used so didn't bother with it in the end, might be because I've never plastered before but that's kinda the point in this case four, given I was far too slow at the start by the time I got to the end the start was starting to dry and trying to smooth the streaks out resulted in me causing more problems so I gave up trying in the end five, I found placing the plaster on the tray and then smoothing it evenly on the tray with a large scraper before applying made the job faaar easier and cleaner albeit slower six, as in this video these tutorials always show them pushing and pulling the plaster on but I can pretty much guarantee you wont be able to do this and will likely go one direction, as without the experience it just causes more problems finally, my ceiling did end up perfectly smooth but I needed to take a day sanding it down to a smooth finish, but my advice is if your just doing this once or twice as a DIY job to save money don't worry about how messy the end result is, you can always sand to a clean finish later as plaster tends to sand very easily

Defo gave them a hoover before he dragged them through the mother in law's house!
Is it at all possible to just do two coats of finished plaster on this textured ceiling rather than using the bonding coat? Just a thought
What is the drying time between trowling stages?
Could you review the marshalltown squeegee for plastering?
What kind of plaster do you recommend for those up us in the States?
how hard is the pressure on the speed skim?
Your a better man than me mate I've been at it 44 years I would have to sheet the walls up other wise the room would have to be redecorated l0l
Hi mate, love your videos I’m in the process on becoming a plaster and I am interested on that speedskim what’s mm is that please? As well where’s best to build your knowledge on plastering as that’s my main focus I love the information behind it like what materials can you plaster, bond or render on etc.
Thank you mate... Really appreciate that. This is the 6mm Speedskim ST - perfect for flattening. Check out our Welcome Course. We'll walk you through the basics to plastering and give you and opportunity to take your education further if you need it. It's free so you have nothing to lose.

Why pva binding when is still bit wet ?multi will stick to it anyway no ?
Hey Mate , are the nela Tools any good? they selling them in canada now and I was tempted to tried them .
Sounds like a good tip - will have to try.
Exactly how I do it a lot easier normally put about quarter of a bag of bonding for 2 bags of multi
Magic mix 👍
I do this all the time, even on some old walls that need strengthening/meshing
I never thought of doing that. How much bonding would you mix into a full bag of MultiFinish? Is that just for first coat or both? Any help appreciated
I use hardwall on artex ceilings as the hardwall dont dry out as quick like bonding
Good idea mate...cheers!
Another excellent video.
What do you do if the ceiling is bowing in the middle? Do you have to rip the whole thing down and start again?
just out of curiosity, how long did this one ceiling take? my whole house has textured ceilings and I hate them 😭
Hi Blaine,
Recently moved into an older property.
How do you find the carbon of the nela mate take long to break in? I had the stainless steel one and it was like using a brick
Can you use the same process on a ceiling that has cracks in or is it better to lower the ceiling with plasterboard?
If personally overboard a ceiling which is damaged. It's not worth risking mate 👍
do i have to flatten the bonding with a trowel before i skim? cheers
It’s best if you do mate 👍
What are you standing on? Do I need to hire a platform (very expensive, £350 for 4 days!)
Blain you are the man!
Ha thank you matey!!
Please do more! I need to plaster my front yard
I'll keep them coming my friend... Don't you worry about that!
Thank you, brilliant 😊
What is the difference between undercoat plaster and bonding? both made by gypsum
I believe the bonding seals the surface to prevent all the moisture from getting sucked out of your plaster by the drywall and gives the basecoat of plaster something it can stick to. Lookup plasterweld.
Another great video
Are you still finding some problems with multi finish I had a ceiling last week and it seemed to be going way to early !
Cheers pal! It's actually been ok down my neck of the woods but I'm sorry to hear about your problems pal
@@PlasteringForBeginners well strange putting 12.5 litres per bag and just doesn’t seem right 🙄🙄
@@PlasteringForBeginners defo having trouble with the multi finish here in wales doing a small man cave today I honestly thought One hit one mix but nope done the ceiling and one bloody wall and it was really pulling less than half hour 😳😳😳
Could I ask, why not just scrap back the artex to get flat and then go straight over with Plaster? Why use bonding initially?
Artex can contain asbestos usually if it was done pre 1960, so you don't want to scrape it back, if the house was built say 1970, then the artex shouldn't have asbestos in it.
Don’t watch your videos to learn but general enjoy watching them keep it up mate 👌🏼 also is that the nela carbon ? If so how you liking it had mine a month
Thanks matey. I really appreciate that! I've had it for roughly 5 months but I've been breaking it in on my rendering jobs. I really like it actually - it's a lovely trowel now it's breaking in.
Let's croc on..😅
Thanks so much though. Great help.
Glad it’s helped pal!
1 and a half bags
Nice one bro thank you very much ❤
Hell yes. Looking forward to this Blaine!
I hope you enjoy it matey!! Great hearing from you 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners amazing video buddy. Watching it all already!
Can’t wait until I’m as lean and fit as you to be able to practice consistently.
Been doing my hammer curls! In fact, my next workout is in 20 mins…
Can you use a roller brush
Attempting my first ceiling next week in the kids room 🥴 wish me luck
Was the second coat a separate mix ? Cheers
As a complete DIY and plaster beginner who just now finished skimming my kitchen ceiling these are my experiences from the various tutorial's I watched
Firstly I wasn't going to pay money for a mixer just to use it once so I got the ready made plaster which I'm guessing is far wetter/sloppier than what they use in these tutorials as the roller method was useless
Second it didn't go on no-where near as smoothly as in this video but I found out later applying a good deal of strength when putting the plaster on helped massively, as I was far to gentle at the start
Third the speedskim didn't help at all and strangely left long scratch marks when used so didn't bother with it in the end, might be because I've never plastered before but that's kinda the point in this case
four, given I was far too slow at the start by the time I got to the end the start was starting to dry and trying to smooth the streaks out resulted in me causing more problems so I gave up trying in the end
five, I found placing the plaster on the tray and then smoothing it evenly on the tray with a large scraper before applying made the job faaar easier and cleaner albeit slower
six, as in this video these tutorials always show them pushing and pulling the plaster on but I can pretty much guarantee you wont be able to do this and will likely go one direction, as without the experience it just causes more problems
finally, my ceiling did end up perfectly smooth but I needed to take a day sanding it down to a smooth finish, but my advice is if your just doing this once or twice as a DIY job to save money don't worry about how messy the end result is, you can always sand to a clean finish later as plaster tends to sand very easily
oh, and be prepared for a dead arm for a day or two after finishing XD
How long do you have to wait until you use multi finish once you have done the first coat with the bonding?
Roughly 45 mins to an hour. Just depends on the background you're working on pal 😉
@@PlasteringForBeginners that’s great thank you letting me know. Very useful video too 😊
Hi mate great video. Never seen you skim with the nela carbon on other videos. How you finding it? What size is it?
Thanks pal! I've been breaking it in on my rendering jobs but I'm actually starting to like it. It's 14" - a very nice trowel indeed!
@@PlasteringForBeginners yeah I've been toying getting one. My marshalltown off 8 years has been damaged so no use anymore. Got a permashape but can't get on with it too much like a 🍌 Just need a quick replacement as I don't do many renders anymore. Any recommendations on something buddy? 👍
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Thank you for the video as I am preparing to do the ceiling this coming weekend and I'm s£&ting it cos I don't want to do any mistakes 😂 I will let you know how it goes thanks again for a brilliant video 👍
Great video Blaine great tip for artex your like my sleep therapy listening to you at night sends me to sleep haha 😂😴
Hahaha thanks pal! I really appreciate that - glad it's helping you sleep 🤣
