My wife wasn't impressed, though. And I had to call in a professional to undo the damage. I'm sure some people are able to DIY this kind of job, but it's pretty difficult. We recently bought a house and to my horror when removing the wall paper it all needs plastering. We can’t afford it so I’m going to give this a go. Thanks so much for sharing.
Great vid. I have 1926 plaster that I'm skim coating (wall and ceiling) and some large damaged sections are drywall (gypsum wall board)...I'm confused about when to use a "bonding agent" like "plasterweld" vs. PVA vs. Water. Looks like PVA for drywall, plasterweld for exposed plaster edge/crack & Lath, and water for generally intact areas of plaster. Then everything gets a top coat of DAP Plaster Wall Patch (Mix of 60% Lime and some Gypsum with 2 hour working time). What you think?
Hi, if patching up plaster on drywall, in the UK I would use a product called 'hardwall'. It's a filling plaster, mixed with the same method as the multifinish plaster in my video (finishing plaster). It can be applied a lot thicker to allow you to fill holes. You don't really need to apply PVA onto drywall/plasterboard as it is designed to take plaster directly onto it, but if patching up, you are likely to be going over old plaster etc, so always PVA the area to be patched up, and then apply the filling plaster (hardwall). This would apply when going over old walls that have an old plaster finish on them. The pva helps to control the absorbtion of the moisture into the wall and will prevent it drying to quickly and cracking. Then when that's gone off and smooth, go over that again with 2 coats of pva before plastering your finishing coat over the top. As for lath and lime plasters, it's best to get specialist advice as it depends on a few factors including what state the existing plaster is in. Often when plastering over or patching up old lime plaster, it will absorb moisture, and then when it dries out it cracks and can fall off giving you more problems. I hope this helps...a bit!
You often get people making DIY videos and it's their ''first time'' and as far as I can tell, despite their 300k views, they are difficult to watch and go on a LOOOOONG time. This was done by an expert with years of experience so they make it look simple. They also give you the basics of what formula you need, tools introduced correctly and you see a finished product as they go without gaps (novice probably looking at instructions!) Great video Pouse around the house, thank you so much, I'm going of to do a less shit job than i would have before watching this video.
Hi Dermot, really appreciate the feedback although I'd have to say I am by no means an expert, just able to plaster but not as well as people that doing it every day. I'm a bit slow! However nice of you to think so. I try my best to include everything as I know how frustrating it can be to watch a video without a full explanation, although I'm sure I'm guilty of this but always open to feedback for improvements. Thanks for a great video, very clear to follow! Looking to possibly plaster our hallway as the previous owner had glossed the walls and ceiling (several times) way back in the mists of time, and there's old fashioned chunky tapes exposed as well. We've tried lining paper with zero success, so I'm wondering if its possible for plaster to stick over gloss ok? It's no longer got a high sine and has a primer layer over the top at the minute
Hi jenny, if the gloss is sanded back flat and has a course finish, you may be able to PVA over it (twice) and plaster successfully providing the paint underneath has a good bond to the wall. But I wouldn't want to guarantee it has I've never done it before. Sorry if that hasn't helped. Thanks for watching.
Glad you enjoyed the video Katy. I'll see what I can do on the stud wall, it's just having time to get all the vids done! Good luck with your projects and thanks for watching.
Just a great presentation altogether: right pace, good detail, straightforward, informal but professional. Well done. Just shouldn't be that hard should it? And yet some folks, well... I subscribed. But now I have to find some thing to get plastered.
Thanks for the kind feedback, I'm not used to it. Please tell me there's something you didn't like or I may not trust you! Maybe plaster under the stairs for the hell of it? Good luck and thanks for watching!
Great video! I noticed you PVA'd on a relatively flat wall. What if your wall is a bit of a mess to begin with? Do you strip it back to bare brick? If so, then what?
Hi Shaun, a few options. You can dot and dab plasterboard sheets to the wall using the appropriate adhesive. Then you have fresh plasterboard to plaster onto. This however eats a few inches into your room due to the depth of adhesive and plasterboard. Option 2 is similar, you could battern the walls and screw plasterboard to it but this also uses up a few inches. You could use a filling plaster like bonding plaster or hardwall plaster which can either be plastered over the whole wall to create a flat finish, or it can be used to fill/patch the gaps if you only have a few rough parts. It can be applied much thicker than finishing plaster. Then you go over this with the finishing coat of plaster like in the video. But always PVA between the coats of bonding plaster and finish plaster. Or another option is to strip the wall back to brick, cement render it, then plaster over the top of the render. There are probably a few more options but they are the most common or logical ones really. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Hi, thanks for the feedback. That is just the colour of the plaster. In the UK, most British gypsum plasters are brown. There are one coat options that come in white. That's a great noise! Good luck and thanks for watching!

For those people out there that don't have a machine to mix YES you can still do it by hand with a gauge trowel and get your hands into the bucket to break any large lumps with your fingers .... keeping your tools clean .. dry with a paper towel and then use a tiny bit of machine oil on your trowel to slow down the rusting process that way your trowel will last longer.... types of trowels there are plastic and wooden handled one I would say get a wooden handled one as plastic can slip in the hand....

Loved this video. I’m about to attempt to plaster my kitchen - wish me luck!
Good luck!
Absolutely Brilliant Fella! Great Work, Well Done!🛠
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
4:36 "plaster going dry, panic stations" really made me chuckle.
Thanks for the feedback.
Great video mate. Im from South Wales and I'm currently in College learning the 4 trades. I started my Plastering course today for the first time and it was alright. I'll definitely be watching more of your videos to educate myself. 😊
Thanks for the feedback and best of luck with your course 👍 I did plastering at Coleg Gwent pontypool. It was a good hands on course with pretty much 100% time on the trowel. Hope you enjoy it.
I tried your gurning technique, plastering at work yesterday. Necked 2 eccies at lunch. By the end of the day you could see your face in the polished wall.
Thanks Gareth. Top man.
Great stuff, thanks for watching!
Great tutorials dude... With your technique and help from others I've managed to become a semi pro in just a few weeks...
Keep up the good work :-)
Great news James. Keep it up. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Just about to plaster our new cocktail bar. Never plastered before. This has been muy helpful. Hopefully no "panic stations" 😂
I hope so too!
Cracking video matey keep up the good work...I'm in the middle of a kitchen fitting doing it all myself so keep em coming..cheers again 👍🏼
Hi Rick, thanks for your comments and thanks for watching.
Am inspired. Am trying to be a DIY lady. Will try this out. Thank you!
That was a good gurn! Even ya eyes were on stalks.. Double dropped and buzzing with the skimming!
Great video and one of two or three tutorials that I watched prior to plastering over a doorway I blocked up in the summer. My wife is frequently telling me that I poke my tongue out when concentrating so I knew I was in good company with your advice.
Late to the party on this comment but....keep poking that tongue out!
Great video - really helpful and well presented!
Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching.
I've just come across your video, i'm looking at moving house next year and wanna learn how to plaster myself to save some money thank you for taking the time to post the video it will definitely be going into my saved folder !

Got a bit distracted, you look good. Thanks for the tips.
Only just read this comment for some reason. I'm 4 years more weathered now but thanks for the kind words all the same!!
Thank you for this video, has helped a lot, specially the tip for the thinner second coat.
Great vid fella, very informative.
Thanks for the comment.
Starting plastering myself, this video really helped thanks
Glad I could help!

Excellent, simple, visual, and humorous presentation. You should be on the telly.
Thank you for the feedback John, although I have more a face for radio! Thanks for watching!
Great vid keep up the good work
Thanks for the feedback Michael, glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Hope the project goes well. Let me know how you get on and thanks for watching! More plastering vids on my channel if you need them.

Got to plaster a wall for the very first time tomorrow, so tongue is ready and chin poised, brilliant video
Best of luck with it, watch you don't catch any plaster on that tongue!
Nice video mate
Thanks for the feedback Tony and thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent, straight to the point video. I've watched and learned, now on to the practical. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback.
to the point ... love it. I'm learning at the moment can you make a video about building stud walls? 😆
Glad you enjoyed the video Katy. I'll see what I can do on the stud wall, it's just having time to get all the vids done! Good luck with your projects and thanks for watching.
great demonsstration skills very nice , thanks
Thanks for the video. Nice and clear.
Thanks pal. Gonna give this a go. Great video.
No problem 👍
Just a great presentation altogether: right pace, good detail, straightforward, informal but professional. Well done. Just shouldn't be that hard should it? And yet some folks, well... I subscribed.
But now I have to find some thing to get plastered.
Thanks for the kind feedback, I'm not used to it. Please tell me there's something you didn't like or I may not trust you! Maybe plaster under the stairs for the hell of it? Good luck and thanks for watching!
Love it. The tongue poke was good banter!
Glad you enjoyed it. More plastering videos on my channel so feel free to view to your hearts content!
It's people like this that keep me in work 😆😆 cheers 👍
looks smooth, why is the plaster that colour? I find making noises like sharapova helps me!
Hi, thanks for the feedback. That is just the colour of the plaster. In the UK, most British gypsum plasters are brown. There are one coat options that come in white. That's a great noise! Good luck and thanks for watching!
What is the product your using..exact name?
British Gypsum Thistle Multi Finish Plaster
Thanks mate. Going to do a kitchen wall. I hope my gurning can get as good as yours lol.
It'll take time but anyone can learn to gurn with some practice! Best of luck and thanks for watching.
Good lad. Thanks

Brilliant presentation, particularly the tongue-poke and gurning section. Reckon I'm about set now...
Good luck with your project!
Thanks for the feedback!
I watched your video and tried to follow your tutorial… my husband was impressed 😀
Anyway, thanks for your video, it was really helpful. 👍
Hope it went well, thanks for watching.
