- “If you don’t cry when you see the reveal; you’re not human.”
It has been called one of the most emotional podcasts ever filmed!
On this special edition episode of Friedman Adventures, we bring back Capt. Mark Pisano and Capt. Paul Strasser to recount their rescue at sea of a 9 year old girl on May 19, 1986.
They think they are telling their story to a reporter for Spanish language TV. What they don’t know is that sitting before them is the girl they saved over 35 years ago.
This is an emotional roller coaster, that will surely move you to tears.

When she says “I’m Desiree”.... everyone in the world starts crying 😢 10:09
You are so right Ray. It’s still hard to fight back the tears at that exact moment. Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment.
Big facts
Same here. I watched two more times. Same reaction
@ 9:51 The moment just before when Phillip says "You guys are heroes" and the guy to his left shrugs
Sure did
Desiree is my niece. I was 15 years old at the time when this tragedy struck. Losing my sister, my brother-in-law, and my 5 year old niece all at the same time was devastating to say the least. Desiree shared the initial podcast with me and I was excited to hear about the reunion. Watching this video brought me to tears. Brought back a lot of memories and emotions. I didn't realize Desiree remembered so many details. I never asked to spare her any pain of reliving that horrific time in her life. Hearing how my sister and the others passed played so differently in my head all these years due to the limited information we had. I have no doubt God steered these wonderful captains in her direction so she would survive. He had and has a purpose for her life. She is a special woman, wonderful mommy, and a great wife. I'm so proud of her and proud to call her my niece. Love you to pieces Des.
Hi PATRICIA. We all cried to in fact all of us have had our moments since that podcast. Thank you so much for sharing so many of your private thoughts with us. I could see that this podcast brought some closure to the captains and Desirae. And it sounds like it help to answer some questions for you also. I agree with you that God stood those captains toward her vessel. It had to be divine intervention.Once again, thank you so very much for leaving such wonderful comments. I hope that we can all get together sometime in the very near future.
@@FriedmanAdventuresPodcast Hi Phil. I don't know how many times I've watched this video today and cried every time. Thank you for making this happen for Des. May God bless you.

@@FriedmanAdventuresPodcast Remarkable
I am curious, what happened to her and her cousins after? I mean who raised them? They lived next to their grandparents I believe.
You can tell those two men have loved that little girl all of those years, wanting to know that she is ok.
You nailed it Mike
👍👍👍
Them saving all the newspaper clippings let's you know how much it meant to them. I lost it at that point 😢
There's nothing better in the world than watching two grown ass tough men crying with joy.
Couldn’t agree more my friend. Thanks for sharing
that hug must’ve felt like the world for them 😭
Absolutely. I feel so blessed to have been there.
As soon as he says "This is not a translator" the guys understand already. What a moment.
Absolutely right Jerome. When I said that, and saw the reaction I knew they knew. Thanks for visiting us here my friend.
@@FriedmanAdventuresPodcast - I wondered if they might have suspected before that but, when you said that, there was no doubt. They shouldn't hide their emotions, though. I was blubbering and I wasn't even involved. They did a good thing and saw the good result decades later. Great, great story.
Especially the one in the blue hat, the expression he got when it was said this wasnt Rachel
@@FriedmanAdventuresPodcastThere was about a two second delay, then bam!! This was a great happy/sad story. I’ve shared it around and everyone loves it. Thanks 🙂.
Why do i punish myself by rewatching the "I'm Desiree" scene over and over and bawling my eyes out.
That is such a good question. Maybe it is her Strank’s, the fact that she is such an inspiration to us all, how real it truly is. There is something that draws people back to it over and over again. Thank you for taking the time to comment as we really appreciate it.
Same here Willy!
damn, saying the same thing
It was a bittersweet moment!
Same as you haha
My uncle was on this boat..Allen Wheeler, which was Desiree uncle as well. My middle name is named after him...Joseph Allen Wheeler... Thank you for saving her!!
Good morning Joey. That is so nice to hear from you my friend. This is Philip, the podcast her. I was so honored to have Desiree on our show. And as you said, the two heroes, Mark and Paul. She watched her family die around her this ain’t shit to her
True
The fact that these guys tried so hard to find Desiree to see how she was after all these years and just know that she was ok speaks VOLUMES of the level of integrity and character that these two men have. Hero's certainly comes to mind when it describes these two and everyone else involved in the rescue.
Thanks for sharing my friend. So true
They are keeping all the newspapers clips.

I was looking for this exact comment, this is such a genuine moment. His mouth physically drops in disbelief
So true.
Him putting his head down before she even finished almost made me cry. He knew right away who she was
Absolutely crushing when she recalled each event. 😢 Unimaginable for an adult let alone a 9 year old.
100%! What a strong woman Desiree is. Thank you for visiting my friend.
god, the way she said "i remember my mom foaming at the mouth." the fact that she tried to save her uncle and couldn't hold on to him. that poor little girl had to watch them all pass away. i can't imagine.

@@FriedmanAdventuresPodcast As a former small boat fishing captain, I've pulled my own friends out of the water, dead. So to see and hear about this little girl get pulled out alive, after 24 hours in water of that temp (I'm a 37 year old healthy man and I doubt I would have even made it) makes you feel good after seeing the opposite.
Happy tears! ❤
Absolutely Debbie
What she went through is unfathomable. May she have nothing but happiness and love the rest of her life. And what incredible heroes. It was awesome to be able to see the reunion. Bless all of them!

Loved the podcast!. Desiree used to be my work partner a few years back. I never knew her story. Recently my wife has become super close friends to Desriee and I heard about the strory. But to hear it on this podcast had me in awe and in tears. God works in mysterious ways. 🙏 .
Hi Ricardo. Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to leave a comment here. Desiree is really a special person who now acts as an inspiration to me for several reasons. I was so fortunate to have just been in the room with those three playing a small role. Sometimes when I am on a walk, I still tear up when I think about it. Thanks again for checking in my friend.
how lucky you are to be able to work with a wonderful person..Cheers
I have not seen Mark or Paul in many years... since my ex husband worked for them on the Independence. Their heroism does not surprise me, nor does their humility about it. They look pretty much the same as well lol! Very awesome, and typical of the type of gentlemen they are this brought tears to my eyes.

When Mark is trying to explain how it felt and Desiree finishes his sentences. They both remember exactly how it felt to be in the water that night and will probably never forget it. What a sad yet captivating story but I'm so glad there could be such a wholesome reunion from it. Thank you for sharing the moment with all of us as well.

You can see Paul's heart drop when Desiree said the accident happened in the evening and he realized she'd been in the water all night. :'( And the way he smiles when she talks about her kids is like a proud father. ❤️ So glad they were all able to meet again.

I go on the Independence boat regularly and have for many years . I have known these two for a long time and they are just the best . I never knew this story but I am not surprised. Mark and Paul are indeed heroes . I am so proud to know them .
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your comment here as we deeply appreciate it. Mark and Paul are indeed heroes. I too am proud to know them both. That was such an emotional day. And I have had my moments since , including one just a few minutes ago. Desiree is such an inspirational person. I was out trying to walk 10 miles the other Day and my ankle was really hurting. Just about the time I was thinking about quitting I thought about her and what she overcame. Finishing that 10 mile walk was never so easy. Take care my friend and thanks for your support.
Holy cow. I had zero knowledge of Mark and Paul. I’ve done an annual 3 day trip on the Indy 2 years in a row, and am already booked for next June with captain Matt.
Keeping it real I just have to say, Desiree is a complete badass of a person and woman. What kind of obstacle could anyone ever challenge her with that she wouldn’t just shrug off and annihilate? Her son is destined to be a strong man.
I don't know how she held her emotions back sitting across these men. Must of taken every ounce of strength. Until she couldn't.. when she said I'm Desiree.. man, even I wanted to give her a big hug
I know exactly what you mean. Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment here

I knew when it was coming. I knew exactly what was going to happen. Still I'm sobbing with happiness from their relief. They worried and wondered about her for every one of those 35 years. The gentleman sitting closer to the host figured it out but waited on her to speak before getting fully excited. This is a beautiful story of luck and survival that got to grow up into thankfulness and love. Those men became her uncles that day, it's so nice to see their reunion.

I had a similar situation. I did two tours in Vietnam doing medevac duty. My last mission, we rescued three guys from live combat. The MASH doctors didn't think they'd make it. I keep coming back to this video when I'm feeling low. It's amazing how it always picks me up.
It dawned on me that what Mark and Paul did was more than saving Desiree. They also saved the lives that came after her - her kids, her grandkids, and beyond. The good things they and their descendants will do in the world all stem from that one act. It's crazy to think about how many lives are better off because Mark and Paul were there that day.
Again, big thanks to Phil (?) who put this video together. It's easily my favorite video on UA-cam.

Without a doubt one of the top reunions. I've seen this a number of times and STILL tear up when the guys realize she's not the translator.
Thank you so much my friend
From a tragic accident springs forth a very emotional and beautiful reunion, years in the making! 😭
It was such an emotional time. So happy you enjoyed it and thank you for leaving your comment here.
I’ve watched this like 10 times. She is so well adjusted to such a horrible incident. Good for her.
Thank you for visiting Paul
Amazing that she kept it together that long in that podcast.
This is my number one favorite UA-cam story of all time
Can’t thank you enough Maurice. Really appreciate it
Well it wasn't all about Desiree (if I spelled fer right) I love when y'all broke down..priceless
The picture of the captains at the 6:13 mark, they were so young!
I know Ron. They were wise beyond their years and did everything just right. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here my friend.
It’s often overlooked but first responders or rescuers also suffer versions of trauma, often seeing the aftermath of tragedy firsthand. Mark and Paul had likely put all that aside for years, this was a great release and therapy for them too.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments, Victor. You are so right my friend.
