I primarily work on dodges, but usually if the housing remains the same and you are using a OEM gear set the pinion depth won’t change (you use the removed shims from the old gear set). The manufacturing tolerances have come a far ways - you want to still double check, but this is always what we find basically everytime.
Actually, the 6th over the course over 15 years. Enough time lapses between jobs that re-gearing differentials and reading patterns take me a bit more time than it would for someone who does it more.
Pattern on the heel on drive side means the pinion is too deep. You have two options now, decrease pinion shim size or tighten backlash. One will center it better than the other its up to you to decide which to do. When you tighten your backlash make sure your still in spec. If you get a decently centered pattern an your backlash is too tight you have to use a thicker pinion shim. Then play with the backlash again, theres 1000 different opinions on how yo set up a diff but it comes down to spec and patterns
I would like to add a video comment. I would suggest to use a real video camera and not a cell phone and put it on a tripod to keep it steady. Get yourself a wireless microphone. Your video will be much easier to watch.
I have the pattern that you had at first, towards the heel, just installed 3.89 gears in the 9 in. The shims go on the pinion support. For me to get the pattern like you have on the higher teeth, what should I do?Thanks for any help you can give
If your pattern is on the heel, the pinion gear needs to move closer to the ring gear. If you don't have a taper bearing puller, you can add your shims behind the inner pinion bearing cup. Pinion depth is the most time-consuming part of differential setup if you haven't got the specific tool.
Question, i am wanting to put in a e locker into my front diff, do i need to check for patterns? Or just make sure my backlash is good since im not switching any gears. TIA

2nd differential you've done

Thanks for posting this. So you have a pattern that is less than perfect. What is your next move?
Waiting for a tool to complete the series, the tech I initially borrowed it from left the shop I work at.

Good catch, I got a little flipped around there. I'll have to address that flub when I post the corrected pattern.

Thank you 😊. I'll be sure to up my video quality as I learn to make my content quality more consistent

Здравствуйте.
Как называется данная блокировка?
yikes....that coast is so far off.....I'm wondering if you have a mis-matched set.
What type of differential is this .i see springs
It is a GM 12bolt positraction differential in a 1968 Chevy Camaro.

You should only have to set the backlash, but it's a good idea to check the pattern while you're there.👍
