    I’m in very hot weather all year round (US Florida). Example 90 deg Fahrenheit today. I’m going to do an oil change and was wondering sugested oil weight. So many arguments online about this. I feel I am going to thin. Only had car for one oil change so far and want to make sure I’m doing good. Do you have suggestions based on current temperatures. I know we will be cooling off here a little but not too much

      Pete’s Carport I live in Florida as well and I use 10w 40 conventional with 2 stroke premix

      If your talking Idemitsu then I know some continue to run with 10w30 all year round and some owners change to 20w50 in the hotter months. I would suggest consulting a local US based specialist for answers that will suite your specific needs regarding oil.

    Hi. is there a trick to removing the oil filter and not have oil tip out of it everywhere? no matter how long i leave it there is always a good amount of oil inside it which runs out when i finally take it off. also as the oil change is only changing half the actual oil in the car i tend to do two oil changes i week apart when i do a change. which is a pain in the arse. is there after market oil coolers for this car with drain bolts on them so i can get it all out in one go?

    • @essexrotary1540
      @essexrotary1540  4 роки тому +2

      Hi James
      Firstly we have not found a way to remove the filter without spilling oil.
      On the Series 1 RX-8 the filter is mounted at an angle that means that it holds a small (or substantial when it spills) amount of oil in the actual oil filter stand that does not drain off, its usually this oil that you will find is leaking out over everything. try putting some paper towels or an old shop rag just under the filter on top of the engine, this usually catches the worst of it.
      As most good filters have an anti drain-back flange built in to their construction in order to stop oil spilling out the filter itself. If your rocking an R3 then i am afraid your still out of luck, that even worse as it usually runs down your arm.
      As for oil coolers, i thing your over thinking that. i also do not feel that its needed to do 2 oil changed so close together unless you have out the wrong oil in.
      Stick to our servicing guide and you should be golden.
      it is important to keep your oil clean but oil changed at 3000-6000 mile intervals should do the trick. the closer to 3000miles intervals the better.

    Are magnetic bolts and oil filters helpful?

    • @mustangdemon87
      @mustangdemon87 4 роки тому

      @@essexrotary1540 if they wish to filter to a finer micron we recommend installing a bypass oil filter system. Bypass systems normally filter down to 2 microns or so and last 15k miles or more. Tho not normally needed unless you race regularly and even then oil is usually beyond the fuel dilution to continue safely run.

    Isn't the idea of a multi viscosity oil that's its thinner when cold in this case 10 W for protection on cold starts and then 30 when hot, so warming the engine up makes the oil thicker?

    • @essexrotary1540
      @essexrotary1540  4 роки тому +1

      Its not that simply, the oil does not get thicker or less viscous when heated, the oil viscosity it actually measured in different ways between how and cold ratings so it is somewhat confusing. from memory what i am saying is that the is an oil that was rated at 10w10 (i know it would not exist) would be be the same viscosity when both cold and hot.

    • @ValentineC137
      @ValentineC137 2 роки тому +1

      I know this is a year old, but the Essex answer is really confusing.
      The two grades is for what SAE grade of viscosity the oil behaves like at cold (0*C I belive) and hot (engine operating temp)
      a 10 grade oil is alot thinner than a 30 grade oil
      But.
      a 10 grade oil @ 0*C is alot thicker than a 30 grade oil at operating temp, since oil's get thinner as they heat up.
      in other terms:
      SAE grade is a measure of a certain viscosity the oil has from cold to hot, a 10W30 grade goes from being a 10 grade when cold to a 30 grade when hot
      and the reason for multi-grade is that the oil needs to be thin enough when cold to get pumped around the engine in cold starts, but it shouldn't get too thin when hot otherwsie it wont be able to maintain an oil film around bearings and you'll lose oil pressure
      I hope this was understandable, I'm not used to writing comments like this
      but do ask if I didn't explain something properly

    Considering the climate in South Africa what grade of oil would you suggest I use on my RX8.

    • @essexrotary1540
      @essexrotary1540  3 роки тому

      This is something i would recommend speaking to a local tuner about, I know lots of guys in the USA tend to use 0w20 however here in the UK we consider even 5w30 way to "thin" for use safely here with out climate.
      I am afraid we cannot comfortably answer that question for you. But consult a local specialist or there must be a forum for your locality that would be happy to advise you.

      I cannot commend on how the oils are labelled in the USA, to play it save i would consult a local specialist in the USA. There are plenty scattered all over, I can recommend a few for you to search for.

    Should you prime the oil filter? Cheers

    • @assumingctrl
      @assumingctrl 9 місяців тому

      Just put some oil around the gasket, no use priming it as its vertically installed.

    • @essexrotary1540
      @essexrotary1540  9 місяців тому

      no need, the oil filter installs on the rotary engine with the opening facing down so it would just leak.
      best to install the filter, top up the engine oil, run the engine up to trmp, shut it off then recheck the oil level ones it has had chance to drain

    What about the oil coolers? Isn't there oil in there still?

    • @essexrotary1540
      @essexrotary1540  2 роки тому

      There will always be oil left in the engine and oil coolers during an oil change. The same can me said for any engine. If you wanted to drain the oil coolers this can be done, however there will still be oil trapped in the lines and engine block itself so you will never get it all out. In reality the capacity of the oil coolers themselves is not massive as they are mainly all cooling fins.
      This oil change process is how we do it at the workshop. and with regular oil changes it will be fine.

  • @Otani_Garage
    @Otani_Garage 6 років тому +1

    Too bad a ton of the old oil stick around in the oil coolers. I guess you could drain the oil from the oil coolers and put like 6 liters of oil in or whatever the capacity of the whole system is and then run it and check the level but I'm scared the engine would be cranking before enough oil pressure is built up

    • @essexrotary1540
      @essexrotary1540  6 років тому +3

      Unless you have something seriously wrong with the oil in the vehicle there is normally no need to drain the coolers. If you stick to frequent oil changed as we recommend 3000-6000 mile intervals then your going to be keeping the oil clean anyway.
      Don't get to bothered about only changing around half at a time.

      Draining the coolers would only be necessary if you're changing to a different type of oil. Mineral to synthetic (if using sohn for 2T) or 5w30 to 10w40 for example

    • @essexrotary1540
      @essexrotary1540  4 роки тому

      Unless your really set on getting 100% of the old stuff out then it still not totally necessary even training the coolers aswell your not going to get everything out. The engine block itself trams a ton of oil within the oil passaged, rotors and eshaft for example.

      Video will be in the future, however its not all that different, Remove the Oil Pan Guard (a bunch of 12mm bolts) the drain plug is in the bottom of the R3 pan.
      and you will find the oil filter on the front lower left side of the engine, mounted under the A/C Compressor.
