In Japan road tax was based upon engine size, size of the car (length, width) and number of seats. So a car with 2 tiny unusable back seats was taxed less than a two seater. A lot of countries still use engine size and seating to determine road tax.

During my last semester of college, I bought a 1986 RX-7. I really loved driving that car, especially because you could achieve higher speeds in lower gears without coming close to redlining. However, the engine eventually had issues, and I traded it in and bought an suv, which was more practical for where I lived after college. I had a college friend who had an RX-7 of the previous generation to mine, and his was a speed demon. He and his friends were street racers, so he had his highly modified. This thing was so damn fast, especially accelerating from a stop! I wish I had his car, but he had sold it during the summer before I bought mine.

I had 2 RX2s 2dor auto and 4dor standard, fast cars would out run much larger cars. The auto got about 18 mpg and the standard got about 21 mpg. The rotarys fire like
a 6 cylinder, 3 times for each rotation of the rotors. A lot of people scraped the engines because they did not keep the oil topped up, the engines were designed to consume
oil, and the oil system was also part of the cooling system. LOVED THE CARS. (My 4 door was the first Mazda registered in MO, quite an adventure!)

All cars have differences. I own an RX-8, but the oil has never been an issue. Mileage is unpleasant, but does not seem to change much no matter how it is driven. Driving it hard is really the best value. I sat in a new Supra, but it is much smaller has turbo lag and an automatic. The Rx-8 has one unique ability - turn in. The motor responds more quickly than a piston motor due to the proximity of the throttle to the intake port and low rotational mass. Steering with the throttle is more fun than any car that I have ever driven. My tiny mother in law sits in the back and likes it better than the BMW 440 coupe due to the back door ( we tried it at the dealer). So I hold on to the RX-8 out due to my fear that I will miss handling and utility. Any suggestions?

Seems cold intake charge and burning hot exhaust blasting several inches away causes warping of the cases, blown seals etc. A very fun engine to spin up but long term reliability is dicey, mileage is horrible and you need to keep an eye on your oil level. All that oil burning does not give much love for the cat convertor either. I can see them being used as a small, light weight power generator hybrid thing as emergency power backup, they are very light but overall they went away because they needed to go. Two strokes went away also...the world moves on. It was fun while it lasted!
