The calendar board with the zodiac is only a copy, the original is in the museum of the capital city of Prague at Florenc. The copy was made by the painter E. K. Liška for a price that exceeded Mánes's fee (the author of the original). The installed copy was again ceremoniously unveiled on New Year's Eve 1882, along with a novelty, a rooster that croaked and fluttered its wings for the first time.

Jan, thank you for your comments and for sharing your information. I was aware of that - in fact, I think the Honest Guide had already mentioned that in one of his films. In the short time that I have been making these videos, I realised that I have to decide what information to put it or leave out. But your comments are really helpful, because they add to the story - thank you so much for taking the time to comment.

I think people having the opportunity and privilege of being exposed to too much education and information about a lot of knowledge have become very shallow and not easily impressed about anything all these marvelous wonders that have been created around the world.

"Most disappointing tourist attractions in the world"?
    For the uncultured, perhaps.

i agree, like what do the people expect ? :D but its the same with all historical sites, if u know just the name its just some old stuff, but when u know the history, meaning etc.. then it gets the interesting soul.

Excellent video and content !! It's surprising to me that some people are underwhelmed by this masterpiece. It took a genius mind to construct this clock. I would love to see its inner workings.

Dear Iron Clad, thank you for your comment. Glad you liked the video. Unfortunately people are often 'underwhelmed' by the clock but only because they just see the mechanical figures. That's why I explained how to actually read and appreciate the clock in the next video.

Hi, I am interested to know who the artist is that did the painting around 1730, but I could not find his name on the internet...the one with Chronos or Cronos (?sp) in the painting. Would you be able to help me with this info please? It's very interesting to learn about the Prague Astronomical Clock...I just came across it. Thank You, Carolyn in USA.

      Hello, Carolyn in USA.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my video and for your question:
The painting is by a Czech painter called Ludvik Kohl (1746-1821). It is fascinating as it is a really clear view of the Marian column, the Old Town Hall and the clock before it underwent reconstruction in the 19thC. His work was discovered fairly recently in Germany and below is a link to the article. Although it is in Czech, you can let Google Translate do its magic.
Another fact from this is I got the date wrong - I took it from a Czech writer - so clearly, it could not have painted it in 1730 - as he would not have been born. :). Although there is no precise date, the look of the clothes, in retrospect, suggests later 18th C.
Hope that helps and let me know how you get on. You can always contact me directly through our email address.

@@TheMaskedGuide Thank You very much for the info. It is interesting to see how the building has changed with time, in that it looks like it also used to have the "Parler's wing with a Renaissance superstructure"...the outdoor seating area/balcony attached to the Old Town Hall and overlooking the Old Town Square before, I assume. The clock is so interesting to learn about! Thanks again, Carolyn.

Coming here after watching an episode of the Amazon show 'Lore'- that had a mix of the factual and the more 'mythical' and 'notorious' legends about the Orloj.... This was a very easy to follow, cool introduction to the REAL history of this 'early computer'.... NICELY done.....

I think people find it uninteresting because we have been taught that the earth is a globe. For the few who have come to uncover the lies and how the mazzaroth/ zodiac rotates above us, the clock is fascinating as it reveals the truth that has been and continues to be hidden from us.

1419!!!!!! Or did he say 90?🤔 And all I heard for the name was (rouge) but fancy sounding.

    • @TheMaskedGuide
      @TheMaskedGuide  Рік тому

Alise - no worries. Sometimes, I have the same problems. The clock legend is that it was built in 1490, but actually it was built - or created, much earlier than that - around 1419... by Jan šindel, who was the professor of astronomy and mathematics at Charles University and MIkalaš of Kadan who was clock=maker....

    • @alesanrud3281

The clock was first installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest clock still in operation.
