Hopefully now that it seems popular, people much smarter than me will figure out a gimbal system that will stabilize or automatically keep camera level. It is hard to see straight when my truck is doing over 50mph. Also, headtracking would be dope Come on smart people! You can do it!
I have also seen headtracking units before, I have never made one. It would be so cool if someone made it so the servos responded to gyro data so the camera would shake less. It gets crazy in the goggles at speed. @@wedgie502
I did a little narrated rip with my Traxxas TRX-4m a couple months ago on this very subject! it's so fun! Now we just need to wait until real-time stabilization is developed to put it on faster rigs. I also (not FPV, 2020/21 when I started creating) mounted a GoPro on my Traxxas MAXX and stabilized the video in post for much smoother video. But yea, it is a hell of a good time driving these around. Now put a better control link on it and use that new RadioMaster MT12 with a LR protocol like TBS or ELRS and then you can get further, crawlers don't need a strong link because most are controlling it in close proximity. Great vid!
Been using RC ground vehicles with FPV to train school pupils on the way to fly FPV for the past five years. Buggies, Cars, Truggies, Hovercraft. Its a successful and well used valid process.
I built a similar 4x4 1/10th scale rock crawler with analog FPV to check the crawl space of my house. I hate climbing down there when I have to repair a pipe or just inspect things. 1/10th scale tires are a little small, but they sell adapters to put on 1/8th scale wheels. I also widened the stance of it with wheel spacers. In case anyone wondered how such a vehicle would work for this job, it works great.
Did this last year with my 1:24 scale Powerwagon.. flying through my garden was amazing, but driving through it opened a whole new playground. Definitely something people should try if they have an RC car!
I have one of those. It's easy to take an old prop to use as a mount and put it inside where it's safe from roll overs. I'm pretty rough on mine, driving on rock features and crashing. I found it was also helpful to tape a stick on top that extends over the hood and put a string with a weight on it since you have no sense of angle. and I've thrown a bunch of upgrades at it. A hobbywing axe motor gets mine to about 30mph compared to the stock 11mph.
I made one of those too, designed an enclosure for the TX, and slapped it all on a rc car, because I had a colleague that needed it to be able to inspect the crawlspace under his house. Works like a charm
I drive a full size vehicle every day but I don't fly a full size aircraft every day. That's what makes flying fpv so much better than vehicles. It allows me to see what flying is like. I like rc vehicles but just get bored quickly with them. Nice video. The only rc fpv vehicle that would be cool to me would be racing Formula one cars fpv on a track. That would be cool with the front tires in the fpv view.
I did this almost 2 years ago with a smaller 124 scale rock crawler, but I wanted the true perspective, so I put the camera inside the cab. Works great I get just about as much range with the video as I do with the transmitter so it works perfectly fine. You just need short grass because it’s a 124 scale or drive it indoors.
So far,I have fpv'd (analog) an Arrma Typhon,an Arrma Vortex,an Axial Bomber 2,and some little Losi car for a friend.I think the Vortex on asphalt and the Bomber 2 in the woods were the most fun.Its nuts driving around the house from the couch...even more so if you use a RD40 5.8g receiver and run it into the tv.
Silly thing that I made on mine: I took a busted AIO FC (esc fried), and used that as the vtx. That way I managed to repurpose an FC, and get some OSD on it!
Gotta put the camera inside the cab for peak immersion. My 1/24 scale axial fits one of those aio 200mw analog systems in the cab and it's great and doesn't overheat.
Hi Josh, about time you put a fpv system in your rc crawler. I have been using my fpv crawler since 2014. Next time you need to go with a headtracker system. It's a blast.
This year was my first FPV truck experience. I have a 20 year old Traxxas T Maxx nitro truck, and I just made a box with an analogue camera and eachine nano vtx. I cut a hole in the bonnet and popped the camera out just above the front bumper. it was an absolute blast, but wow, the old control links with the crystals are terrible!! 😂❤
With that sweet, sweet radio and a little work you can set up buttons to turn on crabbing and 4 wheel steering, at which point that crawler becomes one of the most fun and challenging things you can do in RC.
I've been putting FPV cameras on "sleds" for years now. (I call em sleds, when the camera and vtx (and often a dedicated battery) are all on a self contained unit that I can strap to my rc cars and stuff. My favorite rc vehicle right now is a tiny 1:35 scale rock bouncer with a caddx ant and a tbs nano sized vtx. I drive it around the school where I work, into offices, classrooms around the halls. its a blast! - I had issues with the range of the control link, so I hacked my own expressLRS surface radio and flashed some pwm firmware to a elrs receiver. - Thankfully radiomaster has released a proper elrs surface radio which I just got last month. much better than the homebrew solution!
Idk why more folks wouldnt do this for racing scenarios… this would be AMAZING on a roadcourse or offroad/indoor…(or oval in the good old days of rc racing)
Because unlike when u upo high in air on a drone when the camera is inside the car not on the roof you are so low to the ground and the camera are not really that good the ground moves so fast and camera cant focus fast and its a blurry mess .. kinda sux tbh
I used to FPV my old buggy before it stopped working . I have been on the hunt for a new buggy or truggy . Something like the Lasernut will be perfect for me!
instead of the step down voltage reg, look at your rx in the truck. there should be an open port, just plug it in there if there isn't then get a Y splitter to help. the Rx on the crawlers are mostly 5v, some are 6.5v. The fans sold for these are plug in play typically.
Biggest pro of the ground rc hobby...no FAA to deal with while we play with our toys haha nice video Joshua! I have recently got into rc drifting so I am really wanting to try fpv with it too 🤘
Finally you put out the video I was hoping you would try. Thanks also consider putting out a video on installing a mini gimbal for less vibration and much more fun!. Thanks 🙏
Awesome JB! I have basically the same truck and I put the MotionSic servo-gimbal thing in the driver seat and added head-tracking. It's AMAZING. I highly suggest the upgrade.
I raced surface RC growing up but got out of it a long time ago and got into fpv flying before dropping it around 2019/20. About a month ago I got back into RC stuff in general and have been planning a fpv crawler for next summer. For now though its winter and I got the RCTF snowcat ready to go... just need snow lol.
I have been scouring the internet looking for a suitable mount for my Runcam Wasp/Link unit to sit on top of the Traxxas Rustler Ultimate. I've printed alot but still nothing works as good as I think this will. I am using the free connections, on my Traxxas, to run motor fans so I'll power the VTX using a 2s lipo I got laying around. Good Job. I think that I'll buy you a cup of coffee.
just use 5v fans and plug the fan in to the reciver , witch is normaly 5-6v it just works fine. i use an old analog system on my rc buggy, and i dint have an fan on my transmitter, but a heatsink. its enough to keep it from overheating but it still gets a bit warm. i dont add fans because i get a lot of stuff in there, because its realy fast for its size. i run 3s 2400mah packs (the same packs i use in series for my 7" drone) also i use the balance plug to power the vtx and cam
JB! I have a product I'm releasing this week that arms the O3 air unit! I've been doing FPV RC Cars on my channel for years and I'm happy to send you one. I'll reach out 🤙
Really cool :) would be interesting to see if ground vehicles become more popular for fpv, it should be possible to build some quite nice vibration absorbers
cameras cant focus fast enough its a blurry mess unsuitble for racing so close to the ground .. its not like a BIG go pro stuck on the roof then watching recording the live feed is terrible because cameras cant handle focus on the ground moving so fast camera tech transmitting is not good enough yet
Great video. Next step - add a Storm32 3-axis gimbal to stabilize the video. I've seen several others doing that - it is a project I plan to work on soon to add to my FPV RC car.
I think If you have 6v, you could simply try to power everything off it. Fan would spin little faster, but should be ok. And 6v is still in the lover limit of 2S. SO There is a good chance your whole system would work just all right. And if not, it would be an additional content for the channel.
Oh....I'm in the process of making a FPV pod, Joshua, but I don't have a 3d printer, so I'm going to cut it out of PVC sheets I made myself (from PVC pipes). I also don't have HD FPV, so I'm using a Caddx Turtle v2 and a Rush Tank Mini VTX. But I wasn't planning on putting a fan!!! I know it's not ideal, but I have some small PC fans! I'm going to see if any fits a 20x20 stack! 😃 The difference is that I'm building it with 2 sheets, one on the bottom and other on the top, using brass standoffs. So, I'm going to need to make a hole in the top part as well! And, anyway, I'm going to use it for rc cars and airplanes, fixing it with dual lock in them. 😊
So when I did it I found a 12v fan that had 20x20 mount I printed a whoop canopy then I built a bracket out of erector set pieces. Then built it like a whoop. Bracket, fan, Vista then the whoop canopy with the camera and antenna mount 4screws run up through the whole stack. The 12-volt fan runs just fine on a 3s battery it doesn't have to spin up all the way to keep the Vista cool then you can just direct wire everything and what I did is I soldered a male and female battery connector and had the two leads connect to that so that you could just plug it in line with the battery when you power up the vehicle
I set this up recently as well. Traxxas Summit with Radiomaster MT12 elrs for longer range, dji vista camera with pc cooling fan similar to JB in this video, but also added a servo to turn the camera bound to a knob on radio.
Fantastic work, Joshua!!! Great ride! 😃 I don't want to say "I told you", but... There you go. 😬 Happy new year! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Put a 1w vtx on my 1/10 about 2 months ago and was great except the vibration. Put small cam/vtx on the 1/24 scale crawlers for the kids and due to the slower speeds the vibration isn't so bad and works fantastic!
For an off-road RC car you can upgrade the FPV experience by placing the camera on an alexmos gimbal. An extra 500mah lipo battery would be enough to power up this extra feature 😊
Yup I've been getting into a lot of crawling!! It's very fun hobby also. Not being heavy regulated either honestly. Variety for the channel bardwell?! I mean alot of people into it may be awesome 💯🤜
I have started my trip down this Rabbit hole. I ordered up a Traxxas UDR, I am bummed that if I wanted head tracking that I would have to either run 2 controllers or rip out the Traxxas and go with a Radiolink (I do like the Bluetooth option in the Traxxas). Trying to follow all the gotcha so the installation looks as easy as what you have here. I ordered the Air Unit 3 and after reading and watching all of Joshua info I decided to return it and get the Vista. I don't understand why the Traxxas makers can't make a little of this easier seems like a boat of money they are leaving on the table. setup: 1. Unlimited Desert Racer (AKA UDR RC Truck from Traxxas) 2. Caddx Vista (Camera and Transmitter to DJI Goggles) 3. Goggle 3 DJI (News Goggle from DJI) 4. Protek Fan Ordered 5. Battery Elimination Circuit (step-down) voltage regulator A bit worried about my ability to Solder wires. Hoping to get it all working before I put it into the UDR. After this most like will flip out the TQi for RadioLink RC8X with the v2.1 to get the 3 ms timing. That would then let me install Bad Ass Gimbal Where to get the BAG: fpvdogfight.com/products/motionsic-b-a-g-badass-gimbal How to install (Head Tracking): ua-cam.com/video/hv9Ir-Lu1oM/v-deo.html TRX4 FPV PAN&TILT With Motionsic BAG: ua-cam.com/video/kpJWaU7eGlU/v-deo.html BAG Planes: ua-cam.com/video/GhVvaWg2TDk/v-deo.html Any insight I might have missed please let me know

Yeah this is super fun I did it already just taped my tiny whoop on my RC truck worked great I remember a few years back there was a guy up here on YT who posted vids of him getting in police chases out on the highway with his super fast long range RC car it was pretty cool
i built a weird ardurover crawlerbot thing with fpv, and yeah heat management and DUST management has been the main problem to solve. I ended up with a mini PC fan surrounded by a cloth filter forcing air into a tupperware box that holds all the electronics, with small vents near the hottest parts.
Ive been doing this with the WalkSnail system. It works great; however no sound and sound is actually important on a crawler so you can hear the motor and whats its doing. Plus if an engine sim is used its really about 50% of the experience using FPV especially on a crawler.
Been doing this for a while and I highly recomend a “prerunner” type truck that has soft suspension to smooth out the camera view without a gimbal. The losi Baja rey is a good choice. I’m so glad you did this video to bring fpv cars to the mainstream. Thanks bardwell.
I was gonna use the Traxxas UDR with some mods to it, they really need speed controls that allow us to run 8S but not blow the tires off and flip the thing...
See "Gimbal stabilised FPV RC car driving" I put an FPV cam on a 3-axis gimbal on top of an RC car, makes it so much more fun because the image is rock steady. Also see "FPV RC driving from 2006 with a Tamiya TLT-1 truck" from when I first tried FPV on an RC car, using wireless security cameras & Olympus video glasses, with the footage recorded on an Archos AV500.

just use 5v fans and plug the fan in to the reciver , witch is normaly 5-6v it just works fine. i use an old analog system on my rc buggy, and i dint have an fan on my transmitter, but a heatsink. its enough to keep it from overheating but it still gets a bit warm. i dont add fans because i get a lot of stuff in there, because its realy fast for its size. i run 3s 2400mah packs (the same packs i use in series for my 7" drone)
also i use the balance plug to power the vtx and cam
JB! I have a product I'm releasing this week that arms the O3 air unit! I've been doing FPV RC Cars on my channel for years and I'm happy to send you one. I'll reach out 🤙
I knew youd love it!
I absolutely love it, I was in the middle of doing this using the rush tank but Bardwell beat me to it!😂
Really cool :) would be interesting to see if ground vehicles become more popular for fpv, it should be possible to build some quite nice vibration absorbers
A gimbal might be overkill but it'd be sweet. On TikTok I've seen a lot of comical caravans of FPV RC car vids.
Softer suspension and tires do it. I have an FPV traxxas Summit thats like driving a couch.
The FAA has definitely helped push more of us into ground rc lol 😆
cameras cant focus fast enough its a blurry mess unsuitble for racing so close to the ground .. its not like a BIG go pro stuck on the roof then watching recording the live feed is terrible because cameras cant handle focus on the ground moving so fast camera tech transmitting is not good enough yet
@@Bogues_88pairing a wide angle lens with small aperture and high ISO sensor makes focus irrelevant. Its pretty easy to accomplish.
Next turtle mode.
Building with parts you have is awesome. That's how some of us build much of the time.
Then head tracking.
Great video. Next step - add a Storm32 3-axis gimbal to stabilize the video. I've seen several others doing that - it is a project I plan to work on soon to add to my FPV RC car.
Very cool stuff
The difference is that I'm building it with 2 sheets, one on the bottom and other on the top, using brass standoffs.
Cool design....found your file folder but did not see the finished part 3mf....Thanks for the cool video.😎
Hell yeah! I'm definitely adding something like this to my wishlist of projects 😂😂
I haven't watched one of your videos in about 2 years but the rc fpv crawler seems interesting. Need to do a high speed pass rc fpv car.
Fantastic work, Joshua!!! Great ride! 😃
I don't want to say "I told you", but... There you go. 😬
Happy new year!
My Bad...I am stupid ..I found it. Thanks for the print !😎
Yup I've been getting into a lot of crawling!! It's very fun hobby also. Not being heavy regulated either honestly. Variety for the channel bardwell?! I mean alot of people into it may be awesome 💯🤜
Same. Got into rc drifting and it is way more fun than I imagined. Love the freedom as well.
I don't understand why the Traxxas makers can't make a little of this easier seems like a boat of money they are leaving on the table.
setup:
1. Unlimited Desert Racer (AKA UDR RC Truck from Traxxas)
2. Caddx Vista (Camera and Transmitter to DJI Goggles)
3. Goggle 3 DJI (News Goggle from DJI)
4. Protek Fan Ordered
5. Battery Elimination Circuit (step-down) voltage regulator
A bit worried about my ability to Solder wires. Hoping to get it all working before I put it into the UDR.
After this most like will flip out the TQi for RadioLink RC8X with the v2.1 to get the 3 ms timing. That would then let me install Bad Ass Gimbal

Any insight I might have missed please let me know
Great video! I know this is a quad channel but while you are at it covering other things, it would be very cool to learn how to build an FPV wing from scratch, especially from you since you would explain it all the way unlike many others I watched 😆
Think this is great you have covered this on your channel
Yeah this is super fun I did it already just taped my tiny whoop on my RC truck worked great I remember a few years back there was a guy up here on YT who posted vids of him getting in police chases out on the highway with his super fast long range RC car it was pretty cool
Yes!!!!! I knew it was coming lol i asked and jb answered 🙏🏼🔥
i built a weird ardurover crawlerbot thing with fpv, and yeah heat management and DUST management has been the main problem to solve. I ended up with a mini PC fan surrounded by a cloth filter forcing air into a tupperware box that holds all the electronics, with small vents near the hottest parts.
Its fun when theres a few and race
It's crazy how long it took you to get into this lol. Tons of fun
You're Joshua Bardwell, and you're going to crawl something today.
Gotta find a good use for them ancient air units XD
That's the dream fpv truck@@BlackTownie999
my friend im impres you are very help full and great videos very inteligent
I’m doing this with my t-Maxx! That’s it!
thanks for the video!
See "Gimbal stabilised FPV RC car driving"
I put an FPV cam on a 3-axis gimbal on top of an RC car, makes it so much more fun because the image is rock steady.
Also see "FPV RC driving from 2006 with a Tamiya TLT-1 truck" from when I first tried FPV on an RC car, using wireless security cameras & Olympus video glasses, with the footage recorded on an Archos AV500.
I would definitely want my cam on a gimbal.... Too bumpy for my taste, but this is really cool
