Better graphics, music, no loading, wider resolution, more complete experience... This guys, is how you make good use of the Mega Drive hardware.
Thank Jon Burton and his team + not greedy Disney
MUSIC IS CRAZY
It's normal use of mega drive hardware, with no use of Snes hardware. (Shitty Port)
@@3xperiment8 They should've done way more with the SNES port but I guess building it from the ground up would take a bit more time.
@@paulgilbert5278 It happened on all Genesis to Snes ports. As they are very different hardwares, the rush schedule to release fast would come to port in such a hurry and terrible games.
Jon Burton actually did a video on how he coded the tower stages, I know he addressed how both versions were able to handle it so I was surprised to find out that the SNES cartridge couldn't process a second iteration of the stage.
Coding and graphical tricks sure do make for interesting trivia, and it's insane that Mode7 and "Blast Processing" were able to go toe-to-toe on this game.
It's what happen with almost every Traveler's Tales games on SNES including Piggsy SNES prototype (I didn't played it) but it said in TCRF it was a cut back version of the Genesis one. I don't know why Traveler's Tales hated SNES owner for no reason.
Sega better
Jon Burton did not work on the Super Nintendo port. Almost everything he explains on his channel is only valid for the Sega Genesis versions.
No surprise. Disney games for the Genesis, were like Capcom games for the SNES.
***** But not quite as good as their SNES counterparts.
Street Fighter 2 Turbo (SNES) was better than Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition (Genesis)...
I'd say more like Konami. Capcom didn't really have much multi plat stuff on Genesis besides Street Fighter.
Meanwhile Konami had Sunset Riders, Sparkster, more or less the same TMNT beat em up, all better on SNES.
+flashman7b Konami's Mega Drive output was very strong as well, though. Tiny Toons: Buster's Hidden Treasure, Castlevania and Probotector were among the best in their respective genres.
Matthew Neilson
I know, I was mostly talking about the multiplat stuff.
According to Jon Burton, programmer of the game, the SNES loading screens were because the CPU needed time to decompress the game assets.
So the CPU was really badass then on the Genesis during that time.
Yet it couldn’t handle 3D graphics like the SNES
Those games were originally released for Genesis. So of course the SNES would have a hard time emulating it. SNES had DKC which was leagues better than any “3D” on the base Genesis.
5 years later still great
Wait until you compare their versions of Hard Drivin'
The Genesis high-resolution mode is a huge boost to gameplay in this and other games. Not that the SNES resolution of 256x224 was bad, but you could often tell when a game was designed for the Genesis first. This was a strange period for the SNES as there were a least several games missing major content, likely due to cart limitations. I know Earthworm Jim and WWF Wrestlemania Arcade had some significant cuts. Perhaps data compression was inefficient for the SNES at the time. Also, the fact that SNES sound was all samples was a disadvantage when it came to keeping ROM size down. Anyway, I expected the Sega win here and I agree. Very good work as usual. Your videos are always a fun watch.
Alot of SNES games were farmed out to less skilled teams with less time to do them didn't help either.
But it looks dark as fuck and has poor sound and the characters look small.
@@81giorikas The Genesis one?
@@paulgilbert5278 Yeah. I mean these these things have to count as well don't they? You can't only say ahh it's missing this or it's cropped and call it a day.
lmao, I love the "Where'd Pluto go?" voices.
That was very last minute because I wasn't sure it would work. Glad someone enjoyed it!
Console Wars i love it
Years later, it's still one of the best parts of the video
@@ConsoleWars Oh yeah, it worked alright
Mr nutz please
The Death and Return of Superman would be an interesting matchup to see.
"Both games are really easy"
Are you joking? Shit, as a kid I couldn't get past the Mad Doctor stage. I've beaten it as an adult but it's a hell of a lot harder than all the other Mickey games.
Good video though for a decent game!
Never played it as a kid, maybe that's why we found it easy. And thanks!
After watching Game Hut's multiple vids explaining his work on the Genesis version of Mickey Mania and the many clever tricks they used to pull off the graphics, I was very happy to see the Genesis version win in this battle.
Interesting
I love the way you guys make valid points about which version is better in what it has to offer overall.
"if you enjoy the game, buy it twice, nop just one and make sure its the sega genesis game"
OOOOOHHH LOW BLOW SEGA
OOOOOOOHH LOW BLOW SNES IT HAS LESS LESS LEVELS AND ITS WORSE HAHA
The main reason you'll often have more sound effects and animations in Genesis games is because Super NES games used samples for the music, so it ended up using a lot of space, whereas the Genesis could just adjust values on the FM synth which used almost no space
In this case was just a lazy port though
Man, that SNES port was horrible. Bad choices, bad screen adaptation, loadings and much more.
The next episode will be Run Saber vs Strider? yeah!
Replace Shinobi with Strider and I think you guessed correctly.
+The Froyuken Files oh, that's right. lol
Snes port The shit!!!
When you have blast processing, you don't have to worry about loading times.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but blast processing wasn't really figured out during the consoles lifetime, people never knew how to use this technology until years later.
@@shk_ Blast processing isn't a technology at all. It's just marketing speak to say that the Genesis had a much faster CPU. Had they simply said: "the genesis has a faster CPU", barely anyone would've known what it actually entailed in regards to games which is why they went with the catchy "blast processing". Dev studios were using the full CPU from the get go, it didn't require any special knowledge. It obviously had some advantages with some games but overall, the SNES was usually able to produce better graphics. Which should go without saying since the SNES came out 2 years after the Genesis.
@@Ekinoxe, Of course that this was a marketing tactic for the genesis, but people found out how to make really detailed pictures WAY past its color limit on the genesis (most likely by utilizing certain features on the GPU and CPU but who am I to know) and even more stuff like that that no one else could replicate the same way on the SNES.
@@shk_ oh I don't doubt it. The homebrew scene has been pushing the limits of most of those old school consoles for a while now. I was simply pointing out that "blast processing" was just words and not an actual thing.
@@Ekinoxe As you said, blast proccesing was utilizing the cpu to its maximum, so wouldn't that contradict it being "nothing"? But still, most likely a marketing tactic for full utilization of the cpu.
Sonic Mania turned out to be very good.
I came for the future to say....Sonic Mania Is Awesome
Definitely!
Sonic mania is the best
@@ConsoleWars sonic mania PLUS is best
pac mania
Sonic mania is awesome
3:26 Loved that Side-by-Side transition of Best Graphics :D
I'm so happy someone noticed that! You win!
+Console Wars sonic mania and the new sonic game next year have everyone excited and hyped
What a fantastic episode, guys! I'm always astonished by the excellent writing, moving the episode along in very entertaining ways!
Thank you so much! I work hard on the writing.
XaviertheLycan is to Console Wars that Muhammed from Qatar was to Classic Game Room...
The ending was pretty sick/funny. Quality stuff as usual.
You guys are getting better every episode.
The sock joke had me in stitches
Thanks!
Funny, played this on MD tonight before watching this ep
Why Aliens?
Knew the Genesis version would win out. Another great episode.
Yeah, it was a pretty easy decision.
Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition on Sega Genesis vs Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues on SNES.
On the list!
Console Wars Thanks.
@@ConsoleWars do salior moon snes vs sega genesis
A *unanimous* win for SEGA? Color me surprised.
I know. Every time I come into the reviews I expect color and sound to be a wash for Sega. Not always but most of the time.
3:26 Oh wow, the transition looks great
you guys need to do super turrican vs mega turrican asap!
I second this!
Oh yeah
guys the way you set the plot on this videos is pure genius. This ep was awesome
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think the SNES version has loading times because it compressed the game assets heavily, and because the SNES has a slower CPU, it takes longer to decompress everything. Seems like the most logical reasoning to me anyway, since I'm actually not 100% sure.
it's nothing but bad programing. Donkey Kong Country have MUCH more animations and effects, with no loading times and slowdown.
The thing that would cause load times on a cart game would usually be compressing the assets heavily into a smaller than normal ROM space. My guess is Mr. Nutz and DKC uses much bigger ROM space because of the huge assets, but for some reason they went with smaller ROM space than normal for this game? It's just a guess of course.
That's not to say the Genesis doesn't have games without loading. Aero Blaster on Genesis has load times exactly because of this reason (They squeezed bigger than normal assets onto 4 Megabits of space, whereas the PC Engine version has smaller assets on 4 Megabits and no loading).
The Genesis and SNES version of Micky Mania are both 16 Megabits, so it seems likely.
Edit: I checked to make sure, and Mr. Nutz is 8 Megabits, but the game has very simplistic assets compared to DKC and Micky Mania, so that game would not need to load. DKC on the other hand is 32 Megabits. Yeah, that sounds about right for that game.
Doggycharly PLZ
They both do have load times, but the SFC version is just much faster. That's a good point though, I wonder why that is. Both games are 24 Megabits. I guess since the JP version came out later, they found a way to optimize compression, since 24 Megabits was plenty for that game. Maybe Micky Mania didn't have optimized compression yet, or maybe 16 Megabits was cutting it close even for the Genesis version.
*****
Nah, it's 16. I can't find any site listing that info at the moment, but the ROM sizes themselves are 2MB. 1MB is 8 Megabits, so since it's 2MB you just double it, making it 16 Megabits.
Also, I just realised I was spelling Mickey wrong. Oops.
Can you two just stop, and agree that both the SNES and Genesis have their share of rushed or simply just bad games?
Mickey Mania for Sega Genesis, clean sweeped all four categories.
Sonic: "Another win for Sega."
Mickey: "Oh boy."
Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure on both.
I like what you guys do only just discovered this channel
Either way the sega game is better....same for Aladin...must be a Disney thing...
Oh my God! GREAT Neil DeGrasse Tyson jab! I just really got into your show and that just about sold me on a subscription! Your scripts are tight!
Welcome!
Damn, a game this late being so much better on Sega? What the hell happened? Great vid as always guys.
Also I need to get me that box
Thanks! And that box is pretty sweet!
Great episode! I played both in the day & had a very strong feeling that I knew who the winner was going to be. Can't wait till the next episode.
"Future and Blades", huh?
I'm calling it right now: the next episode is...
>drum roll<
...Run Saber vs. Strider!
i should of thought of that. nice call.
Never heard of run saber, and had to look it up. That makes sense, my first guess was Shinobi vs Hagane. Then i thought Hagane is a very expensive rare game to get a hold of.
Don't know why I read "drum roll" as "dumb troll"
oh for a moment i was thinking Flashback. Because... future and blade runner esque game?
+LyricalMasterMind1 As I recall, they already have Hagane. Not sure if it's an original or a reproduction.
i liked the niel degrasse joke, and the sock LOL, good episode guys
'still not clean, still not clean!'
This one and Earthworm Jim are my favorite episodes ;) cheers guys
Cool!
The tower in the Mad Doctor Stage is not rendered with mode 7, it's actually rendered with sprites arranged in a way.
Awesome vid indeed.
I prefer MD version too.
Me too
Isn't there a lack of self awareness for someone from Nintendo to complain about using nostalgia and repeating the same things to sell.
perfect episode, mega drive have more enemys voices overs too, congratulations guys.
Good job
...you guys definitly need to do something about Thunder Force 3 vs Thunder Spirit!
Great job, guys! :D
Yours scripts are getting better with each episode. :)
This was an episode I was wanting for a long time.
It's such a shame that the SNES port is missing so many things.
It's almost like Earthworm Jim.
Speaking of Earthworm Jim, I would love to see an episode on Earthworm Jim 2.
I'm pretty sure the SNES version would win this one.
Thanks! We'll def do EWJ2 one day.
Console Wars
Oh! Thank you very much! :D
Your episode on EWJ is one of my favorites.
The ending had me in tears laughing. Great episode guys!
Oh my god. Poor SEGA dude, discovering all this stuff about his family for the first time...
I just like that at least one of you knows how important the shower is after a violating event.
I loved it when you called yourselves out on nostalgia!
I just came here to say that you guys... FREAKING ROCK! I rarely say this... please keep it up and never sell out!!! PLEASE always be a family friendly show. ☺☺☺
Thank you!
Just found your show and love it. I grew up playing all these games on the Snes but never owned a Genesis when I was young so only got to play some at friends and families houses. It was always cool and sometimes odd to see the differences. We only had magazines like Gamepro and Nintendo power so not much coverage sometimes on both versions. Had even less money to get every issue too. Anyways great vid, I look forward to watching the rest and new ones.
Sweet! Welcome to the channel!
I just remembered another game you guys can do. Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for SNES and Genesis.
hahaha! nice and dirty ending.
Now Top Gear vs Outrun!
Or Top Gear vs Top Gear, or Top Gear vs Lotus or Lamborghini Challenge vs Lotus.
No thank you :) just Top Gear vs Outrun
Top Gear and OutRun aren't really similar, unless we are talking about 3000 and 2019.
Ryuma King Both are 3rd person racing games, both are emblematic in their respective consoles and both share the arcade feeling in their gameplay.
If I could find a difference it would be the fact that in Outrun you are racing against the clock and in Top Gear you are not.
But if Console War is a show about comparing versions of a Game (Sega vs Nintendo), then there is nothing much to say.
Top Gear 2 is the winner since Genesis and Super Nintendo have their respective versions of this great game.
there is Top Gear on the genesis too
I didn't know how much better the game is on Genesis and how important the resolution can be for the gameplay.
Yeah, gotta go with Sega on this one. I much prefer Mickey's Magical Quest on the SNES.
ua-cam.com/video/kRCSoPVbe8I/v-deo.html
@@autobotstarscream765 No doubt.
If I were going to review the two between Sega and SNES I’d definitely do the Sega CD version. That’s the best one visually and for sound.
By far, the Sega Genesis version won!
I always tought snes version was better when i played it in my snes in the early 90's. Turns out i should have gotten it for my mega drive.
This is a awesome episode :) can't wait for the next episode to come out. Mickey mania is one of all time favorites on Sega Genesis, due it's tribute to past Mickey Mouse episodes/specials and music in the game
I've only played the Genesis version but I remember it being a really good game, after watching this had I played the SNES version after it would have felt disappointing. This was an awesome and clever way to do a comparison, you guys definitely earned a sub from me! I would love to see you guys do a comparison on Justice League Task Force.
way to go...another great episode, dudes.
Thank you!
+Console Wars Greg the new sonic games look awesome and sonic mania is awesome
+Console Wars also everyone is excited for the new sonic games
And the winner is...Mickey Mania for the Sega CD.
These are the type of games Genesis always beat SNES in. Kinda like how RPGs were better on SNES
I've never realized how many Genesis games I've purchased due to this channel. Kinda random to post on this older video, but thanks guys for the quality work. Just purchased Mickey Mania and cant wait to try it out.
Loved the fourth wall break 😂
HOLY FUCKING SHIT THOSE FUCKING ANIMATIONS AND GRAPHICAL EFFECTS ARE AMAZING WOW
Actually, the entire game looks amazing. It looks creative, and I really like the concept of going through Mickey's history and even meeting himself from the past. Maybe I'll play this game sometime.
Its not bad. Def give it a shot.
Once again awesome episode guys!!! I got to say i was a bit surprised of the outcome even though i like SEGA more than SNES. I thought that SNES would have had the better version. It's nice to know that it doesn't. :-)
Yeah it was nice to see a genesis sweep
it sure was ☺
Exactly
Dude, the moose transition at 3:26 is amazing
really digging the show guys!
Thank you!
fuck u 8bit Eric haha lol just alwayz wanted to say that to u.....u guyz r pretty kinda gay but ur content is pretty kinda good 😂.....love the vidz...love ur cameos in The Game Chasers™ Eric
+Steven Webb oohhh snapp
I'm surprised neither of you mentioned that Mickey seems to move a fair bit slower on Genesis.
I have both and I agree that Genesis is the better game, but Mickey definitely moves faster on Snes .
A skeleton killing himself? It's already dead though.
If you have any doubts about the SNES version being worse, check out Retropolis Zone's Quickies Don't Cut It review of that game. It's really good and he takes a look at ALL versions. Also, I played the SNES version on my friend's SNES and later played the MD/Genesis version on the Mega Drive... emulator... I don't own a Mega Drive (or SNES) but I prefer the Mega Drive version for sure.
Man, the SNES version got butchered! I'm gonna hafta check out the Genesis one. It looks like a really cool game.
Great episode, guys! That sock at the end had me rolling!
Def play the Sega version.
Hello Sega CD better than super Nintendo and Sega genesis 😝😲😡🙍♂️👄💋💅💘❤💓💔💕💖💗💝💞💜💛💙❣❣💟💌👠👒👡👢👑💄💍💎🎒👞😚😅
The genesis music is way better to listen too it doesn't tune out like the snes does
Actually, I think the SEGA music sounds a bit better...!
true. i always listened sega music more i don't really like snes music in mickey mania
sega genesis sounds like reall game music. Snes sounds like mp3 file compressed to 64kbps
+ben owen matt furniss is legend
Why...just why did we Americans all use Gems, with only a few good sounding exceptions (Comix Zone) to my knowledge, most US Gen games sounded like farts and cracks, just why?! Gems sucked.
The Gen Sound chip is awesome just ask our friends down in Japan.
(SOR, Shinobi, Thunder Force anyone?)
+Retro Soul contra hard corps, phantasy star, shining force 2.
Did you guys know there's also a Sega CD version of this game? While it does have longer load times, it improves almost everything the Genesis port lacked, and added some great CD-quality music!
I know, i gotta play it as soon as I get a Sega CD.
I really love this videos
Retro fun fact! 5:48 Alot of ppl don't realize that even though Snes specs state it can achieve a 512x448 resolution, in practice virtually every game ran @ the cropped 256x224 resolution that you stated Dan, where most Gen games ran @ a fuller 320x224 res.
Snes only displayed 512x during a few title/menu screens or something I'm pretty sure.
Good to know!
sonic is the "videogame mickey"
I like Mickey Mania on Sega Genesis, cause of the bonus stage (The Band Concert) & others.
I laughed at the Sonic jokes, because I know this was only made it for fun. BUT... If some nintendo fanboys use that "nostalgia" argument for the sonic games, oh boy... I mean, New Super Mario Bros? NES Remix? Super Mario Maker? I REALLY hope noone uses that argument haha
Wait.. so, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Mario 3D World are bad Mario's games? Well, I think that someone it's in fall of nostalgia...
Super Mario Maker was designed by Miyamoto after playing LittleBIGPlanet and wishing he'd done it first.
***** he deleted the comment?
You guys do realize that pretty much every company uses nostalgia.
I think video game companies should start taking things that were popular back then and bring them back or "reinvent the wheel" because nowadays one of the reasons I think console gen 8 sucks is because of a lack of innovation.
I liked the soundtrack for SNES and for game reviews I've got a couple another Disney game which is Pinocchio and Cool Spot is the other.
Clean sweep for Sega! Certainly an excellent example of late life cycle 16 bit game and what could be achieved.
I believe the load times were due to the heavy compression needed to fit the game and all those detailed graphics into the cart size used and because of the slower CPU in the SNES, it took longer to unpack it all.
Snes cpu is faster than genesis if programmed right. This was a genesis game barely ported to Snes.
You have a nice intro guys, love it (also the music is just great) , and love the first 5 seconds (this is Console Warsssss!.....)
lol
Great episode! I love both versions of this game lol.
But that loading time on SNES...ouch.
+Console Wars yeah the loading time was lame lol. batman forever on the snes also has a loading time where as the sega version does not
Good to know.
+Console Wars possible candidate for a new episode maybe? ;)
+Console Wars sonic mania has everyone hyped
Just recently discovered your channel, it's awesome. So far, both of you guys seem to be the best at doing Justice to both consoles and you guys definitely shut fanboys mouth's and put them on their place on Both Sides! I am anxious to see what you guys will bring out next and hopefully you may do many more so that future 16-bit fans can have a more decent and reliable perspective on games for both Consoles. I would also hope to see one of these on the Batman Return games for both consoles in the future. I know one is a beat em up and the other a platform side scroller, but I love both games, although one more than the other, and I believe the comments on the one I like tend to be of dissatisfaction, which shouldn't be the case. or an episode on F- Zero would be really cool, I may know of a good suiting rival for it in the presence of The Outrun series: Outrun 2019. thank you guys, keep up the awesome work!😃
Very funny and clever! Good work guys.
Thanks!
I agree
This is the only time 90s kids know the shorts from the 20s and 30s, except the VHS tapes at 90s kids stores, like Blockbuster.
This is a very cool episode! I never played the SNES version, but I think Mickey Mania on the Genesis is a ton of fun! Plus, that music... 👌
Great work, fellas! I need to go back and watch a few of your other episodes!
xx
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Super Nintendo version was pretty good.
No not😝😲😡😠
I seen you guys on Retrogamingmaniac channel.
Great comparison for the 16-Bit wars. One of my goals is to add Mickey Mania on the Sega CD.
Neil de gras Tyson ....bwahaa good one!
Basically, this game was very specifically coded for the Mega-Drive. You can actually find the founder of Travellers Tales on UA-cam now (GameHut) where he uploads all kind of videos talking about the technical tricks used to get the very most of the Sega Mega-Drive, including how the Moose Chase scene in Mickey Mania was made.
Its fascinating stuff! Just today, he's uploaded how the rotating tower was done.
omg! I have been waiting for this. genesis ftw!
Best line: Who made that decision? Neil DeGrasse Tyson?
Next, do ultimate mortal kombat 3
Hello! Fun fact about 4:01 for those who are new to ''Console Wars'': ''Aladdin'' is not just their very first review, but it's also the very first video they ever uploaded.
Yeah that's what happens you port games made for the genesis to the snes. Loading times, cropped screen and missing levels and music. Good video guys.
(snes should've won sound because it sounds so good tho)
Yeah I thought so at first also, but since the genesis couldn't technically sound as good because of it's chip, it really wouldn't be fair. The point is more effort went into the Genesis version.
*****
I wouldn't exactly say he's being a fanboy... I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan myself. Plus I grew up with the snes version of the game, and I still think the genesis version is superior. Lol
*****
I actually prefer the genesis over the super nintendo.
*****
I don't know about that. It seems like Sega had the better multi platform games more often than not. Probably because the snes versions were lazy ports. Nintendo just had some really stellar exclusives, and having second and third party companies like Rare and Square really helped.
*****
Yeah, Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 were better on snes, and Earthworm Jim was better on Genesis for the most part. Cool Spot, RoboCop, The Terminator, and X-Men I can't really give my opinion on because I've only played Cool Spot, and I played it on Super Nintendo. I thought it was really good on Snes though. Aladdin is one that I know most people say is better on Genesis, but personally I disagree. I think both games are totally different from one another and both do what they do well. They are both great games in their own right and I don't think one is really better than the other. Actually a lot of the best games for each system were only on that system, which is a damn fine reason own them both. Like I said, I grew up with Super Nintendo so I prefer it over the Genesis, but I try not to be bias. I just love the 16-bit era period. :)
Another awesome video, still waiting for NHL 94..keep the videos coming!
Greg you hate sonic, we are now enimes
Another great episode guys. IMO one of the best so far (and it's not just because Sega won. Mario Paint vs Wacky Worlds/Art Alive is another favorite)
Also I see people recommend Knights of the Round vs Golden Axe. Just want to point out there's 3 Golden Axes on Genesis, Golden Axe 2 releasing the same year as Knights of the Round. Don't know which one you should compare, though.
Spoilers: Next episode prediction
Calling it now; Run Saber's gonna win.
