Which one is better with what kind of sounds doesn't matter. The SNES had so many kickass and genius composers on their games, it doesn't even matter. A lot of people point to distortion guitars and say they sound leagues better on genesis, but look at Rock n Roll Racing or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Genesis has a very limited sound in my book.

Funnily enough Mega Drive was probably better for us back then given the fact that most of the best SNES games weren't localised in the PAL regions while the Mega Drive brought out everything. Still had some good options but imagine the SNES without SMRPG, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger & Earthbound? Unless you don't care for RPGs that's a massive loss for the console

I'd even say there are no consoles anymore. It was the same 4 years ago and it's the same right now, the only reason to buy a console is because it's cheeper than a PC. The graphics are worse, if you care about them this much, you should take a PC, but if you can't effort so much money on games, you take one of these consoles which are all just the same.

I have to agree to this comment "slightly", honestly, next to Pokemon, Earthbound has to be one of my favorite RPG's in the retro world. Yes, it was extremely rare to come by, even to this day it's rare (unless of course you have a Wii U or a New Nintendo 3ds XL and you can buy the digital copy for 10$ or using an emulator on your PC). But just having a physical copy is equivalent to holding 200$ to 400$ I'm your hands. Don't get me started on how much the Japanese version is worth haha! but all in all, I find that both these consoles would have been awesome to own both. Really for the Mario and Sonic series. I have no hate to any game consoles really. They are over time build up over each other to create the perfect system like we all have today. Graphics, games, design, mechanizing, and over all having fun with it and not becoming bored.

Not necessarily rare, but definitely expensive. I've seen genuine copies for well over 1,000 dollars online. I love and own both but at the end of the day SNES wins for me overall. I really think whether you prefer SNES or Genesis depends on your taste in video games. They both really are are awesome, memorable consoles.

Bassotronics Will certainly get flak for this. But in my ears it just sounds like some cheesy 90s rave music. It's alright sure. But it doesn't sound that different to that kind of music I mentioned. Guess I just don't see the beauty in it. And before the fan rages from others I do enjoy many soundtracks on Genesis. Sonic being one of them.
Pholiage Be aware that the official CD Soundtrack and other files I have heard taken from the game has a different sound to it. Or at least the high frequency sounds. There is an emulator called Gens and plays the game's music BUT....here here is the good news, the emulator has a option called (high quality) and makes the music sound EXACTLY like the original restoring the high frequencies and making it sound exactly like the good old Genesis.

The SNES had so much more to offer in the way of orchestral sounds and the great RPG soundtracks of the time wouldn't be what they were if they used something like the Genesis' sound chip.

@@rsotuyo15 It was always supposed to be called Mega Drive. But a company owned the rights to that name in the United States. The Genesis name was actually created by Atari executives -- when they were trying to negotiate the rights to distribute the Genesis worldwide.
Yeah, but I don’t care of Console designs, the most important is the games, functionality and the power of the SNES that Nintendo is trying to beat Sega, but Sega accidentally beat themselves due to the Sega CD, 32X and almost over saturated the market with several consoles and they almost caused the 3rd Video Game Crash.
I think overall SNES was better then Genesis. But, as a brazilian, the Sega Mega Drive was way cheaper and easier to buy. So I got one when I was a kid and played it as much as I could. I'm still in love with the music and the Sega classics. Now, the brazilian company Tec Toy has made a new version of the Mega Drive, and I bought it too!
N64 definitely had the best first-party games and probably the best games overall, but a VERY top-heavy lineup. PS1 had far far FAR more great games. N64 was capable of better graphics but the choice to use cartridges crippled how far the system could be pushed. N64 was probably the best console of all time for local multiplayer, PS1 was probably the best console of all time for single player. PS1 games had better music (thanks to the Sony soundchip). If you take the RPGs away from the PS1 it's neck-and-neck but with the RPGs (of which the N64 had like 2 or 3 unless you count the Zelda games as RPGs), it's probably PS1.
I'd take the N64 because of how many great games that were on the system. The PS1 had more titles that were good, though. If it wasn't awesome on the N64, it sucked a dick. The graphics were pretty much a wash, until the end, when Nintendo actually started utilizing the expansion pack(I was always rather shocked that they didn't recycle their SNES idea of putting an N64 version of the "FX" chip in the cartridges, to power them up. Zelda isn't an RPG - it's an action/adventure game, though I will agree that it shares some similarities.
PS1 was probably the best console ever made, originally designed as a CD addon for SNES (that's why it's controller is basically a more ergonomic SNES pad with two more shoulder buttons) it became it's own console after Sony/Nintendo stopped working together and went on to defeat the Saturn, the N64 and arguably the Dreamcast, Sony ended up having to kill it off because it was hurting PS2 sales LMAO.
I go with SNES because of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat which control way better with the SNES. If I was allowed to pick up to 5 games, I would choose Ultimate MK3, MK2, Street Fighter 2, Killer Instinct, and for the hell of it Street Fighter 2 Turbo. These are my reasons to pick the SNES.
I miss those days so much. The days when we didn't have to worry about DRM or lame Firmware updates that could break your system. Or Cloud Based Games that would stop working if the server went down or you didn't have internet. Those were the good times. They are gone for ever.

Honest and thoroughly enjoyable review Jimmy, I remember the war myself albeit slightly younger than yourself (child of '84). It was just that period alone the 90s, kids never had it so good, long hot summers, great music like grunge, great toys, great movies, great to shows, hell even candy and drinks like crystal Pepsi (LA Beast thanks!!). Like I said it was the greatest time to be a kid!!
The reason why Super Nintendo's would turn yellow overtime is because Nintendo decided to put Bromine in there plastic mixtures. Bromine reacts with UV Light. The ones you would mainly see yellow are the earlier models. The later models with the sticker on it. They rarely turn yellow.
I'm of the belief that whichever one your parents bought you as a kid is the one you'd prefer. I was a Sega Genesis kid so I still prefer the graphics and sound effects from that system. But now that I'm in my thirties I think I can admit that both are classic video game systems. Long live the 16 bit era!!!

Netsuko Yoshikawa that would still be the Japanese SNES. Even though the European SNES looked almost exactly the same it doesn't have "Super Famicom" written all over it, instead it just had the words "SUPER Nintendo Entertainment system" written on the controllers and that's it. How would I know? Well it could be the fact that I am European and even though I'm only 14 I do own one. (I also own a Megadrive and I like that one better)
I had a european SNES to, loved it. It's not untill much later I learned that the American SNES was that ugly. I never understood why they went with that horrid design, and what is with the purple shaded buttons and switches? I would have understood if they made the american SNES Grey, black and red, but not Grey and purple. WHY THE PURPLE?!?!?!
Donkey Kong Country 2 had an extremely solid soundtrack. Every song was great, and the sound effects were pretty spot on too. Shit, I can still remember what it sounds like to grab a balloon or DK coin.
The only thing that I may disagree on you was the beat em up games; imo, Sega wins on this one. Overall, I think that Streets of Rage tops em all in the 16 bit console wars. Still, I think Turtles in Time for the SNES came in really close. SNES may have Final Fight, but if you had the Sega CD with the Genesis, you also had Final Fight w/ 2 players and Guy w/ extra stages and an extra mode.
My favorite Beat 'em Up is still Golden Axe 3. All other Beat 'em Ups are virtually the same experience. GA3 had unique playable characters, medieval theme, magic spells, wicked branching levels, and the best music of the Genesis, second to the Sonic games. It's practically a Beat'em Up version of Gauntlet.
I grew up with the Genny so Im always going to lean towards Sega when it comes to the 16 bit battle. Games like Streets of Rage 2, Sonic, Castlevania Bloodlines, Rolling Thunder 2 and 3, Splatterhouse 2 were among some of my favorites. That being said the Super Nintendo was still a bad ass system with a ton of great games. Turtles in Time, Sunset Riders, SMW, DKC, etc are all unforgettable. Im glad both systems had there own unique style. I love playing both.
I love me some Sega Genesis games and Sega games in general but there is something about early Nintendo that I just can't quite live without. I mean just play Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Link to the Past, FF6, Chrono Trigger, DKC Trilogy, Kirby Super Star, Terranigma, Soul Blazer, Demon's Crest, Mega Man X, Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Earthbound; just so many monumental games that were developed so exceedingly well. No slouch on the Genesis though, it had games like: Sonic 1,2,3 & then Sonic CD, Vectorman, Rolling Thunder 2 & 3, Shinobi series, Ranger X, Thunder Force, Splatterhouse 2, Blades of Vengeance, Landstalker, Beyond Oasis, Chakan; and the Genesis was definitely the king of shoot em ups while Nintendo reigned over RPG's. A lot of great quality games. I think we all have a tendency to lean towards one or the other; but I'm just glad we have both and I'm glad a lot of ppl have respect for both sides.
the north American super Nintendo looked like a Volvo in console form, but us brits had the Japanese version (super Famicom), and that looked just as nice as the genesis/megadrive.
What we didnt have however is all the japanese games. In europe the super nintendo only had a fraction of the games while the megadrive got a shit ton.
The North American SNES is arguably the ugliest console of all time, rivalling the NES. Yeh, the JP/Euro SNES looks great. Right up until it turns piss yellow like all NES/SNES consoles, cartridges and controllers. Unless you fastidiously keep them out of sunlight.

When I was growing up I was the only kid on the block with a Sega Genesis, everyone else had a Super Nintendo. All the other kids would come over and play Mortal Kombat as it was the version that had blood. The rivalry was so fierce that even into my early adulthood I would feel pride and loyalty to Sega rise up anytime the two consoles were compared. Eventually I came to accept the fact that the SNES is the superior console, but I also feel that the Genesis has a certain gritty charm that the SNES can't match, which is why the Genesis is still my favorite console to this day. Truth be known, I probably appreciate the Genesis more today than I ever have, seeing as how the things I now like about the Genesis the most, are actually it's flaws. It's low-fidelity audio, for example. I think I like that the most. It has a sound that is unmistakably Genesis. It's limited color-palette gives Genesis games a dark look, and it's lack of buttons keep things very simple. I know it sounds weird, but I've come to love these things. The SNES may be the better system, but the Genesis is gritty, hardcore, and full of win.
3:35 A thing about the Power Base Converter that makes it more useful is that there is no wiring inside the thick plastic piece that hangs over the back of the Genesis. We actually took a hacksaw to ours and simply chopped it off so it would work properly in the second release of the Genesis console. I call it the Hacksaw Mod.
On the one hand, I’d say it’s good because now their games are on all platforms for everyone to play, on the other hand they don’t use may of their franchises as often or at all 😔
+Biggs Also a lot of people don't realize that the big war in Japan was PC Engine versus Famicom and then later Super Famicom...Off the top of my head I seem to remember reading that Mega Drive only had 10% market share in Japan. Sega fared much better in the US and Europe.
1: The US SNES has a boxier shape than the regular console, no idea why. 2: The Megadrive actually got six button controllers the same year the SNES launched (to coincide with MegaCD launching not the SNES). 3: The best version of Sim City was on PC ;) 4: As the Megadrive won in Europe/S America and the SNES won in N America/Japan a simple compromise to the argument is to just call it a tie and be happy with it :)
I live in Britain and collect old consoles and games. So as a retro gamer, I personally think the SNES just edges out the genesis. The main reason for this is that the SNES version of street fighter 2 looks better and killer instinct is on the SNES. Also Mario is better than sonic (Disclaimer- You all know it's true)
This was such a great video, loved the nostalgia. I never had a SNES (wish I did now lol) just a Sega (and a NES at the time) I only played on an SNES if I went to my friend or cousins house. From this video Snes did look better but Sega was so kickass! Of course Sonic was one of the best games ever (especially the second one) Oh but I did love the hell out of Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2, those were the games that made me wish I had a snes, loved Killer Instinct and the Metroid games as well. I don't remember having many "Super Nintendo vs. Sega" arguements back then but this just shows how much the 90's kicked ass, both systems were the sh*t.
On graphics, I feel like it's dependent on the situation. The SNES had better scaling, color, and transparency options; wheras Genesis has smoother animation, smoother frames, and less compressed sprites. A good example of comparing the SNES's Graphics and the Genesis's graphics is to play the SNES and Genesis versions of Earthworm Jim. You'd see that the SNES version has better colors and effects, wheras the Genesis has smoother animation and less compressed sprites.
I can at least say that Earthbound is a good game that didn't do so well in terms of sales. Most kids probably didn't have that game or was uncommon in their collections. That's probably why it wasn't mentioned.

I have to agree to this comment "slightly", honestly, next to Pokemon, Earthbound has to be one of my favorite RPG's in the retro world. Yes, it was extremely rare to come by, even to this day it's rare (unless of course you have a Wii U or a New Nintendo 3ds XL and you can buy the digital copy for 10$ or using an emulator on your PC). But just having a physical copy is equivalent to holding 200$ to 400$ I'm your hands. Don't get me started on how much the Japanese version is worth haha! but all in all, I find that both these consoles would have been awesome to own both. Really for the Mario and Sonic series. I have no hate to any game consoles really. They are over time build up over each other to create the perfect system like we all have today. Graphics, games, design, mechanizing, and over all having fun with it and not becoming bored.

Not necessarily rare, but definitely expensive. I've seen genuine copies for well over 1,000 dollars online. I love and own both but at the end of the day SNES wins for me overall. I really think whether you prefer SNES or Genesis depends on your taste in video games. They both really are are awesome, memorable consoles.

Guess I just don't see the beauty in it. And before the fan rages from others I do enjoy many soundtracks on Genesis. Sonic being one of them.

Be aware that the official CD Soundtrack and other files I have heard taken from the game has a different sound to it. Or at least the high frequency sounds. There is an emulator called Gens and plays the game's music BUT....here here is the good news, the emulator has a option called (high quality) and makes the music sound EXACTLY like the original restoring the high frequencies and making it sound exactly like the good old Genesis.

I don't think anyone is going to argue against the SNES being waaay more capable in the sound department, but the Genesis has some great stuff in the hands of the right composer and a unique sound. The SNES had so much more to offer in the way of orchestral sounds and the great RPG soundtracks of the time wouldn't be what they were if they used something like the Genesis' sound chip.

I think overall SNES was better then Genesis. But, as a brazilian, the Sega Mega Drive was way cheaper and easier to buy. So I got one when I was a kid and played it as much as I could. I'm still in love with the music and the Sega classics. Now, the brazilian company Tec Toy has made a new version of the Mega Drive, and I bought it too!

N64 definitely had the best first-party games and probably the best games overall, but a VERY top-heavy lineup. PS1 had far far FAR more great games. N64 was capable of better graphics but the choice to use cartridges crippled how far the system could be pushed. N64 was probably the best console of all time for local multiplayer, PS1 was probably the best console of all time for single player. PS1 games had better music (thanks to the Sony soundchip). If you take the RPGs away from the PS1 it's neck-and-neck but with the RPGs (of which the N64 had like 2 or 3 unless you count the Zelda games as RPGs), it's probably PS1.
I'd take the N64 because of how many great games that were on the system. The PS1 had more titles that were good, though. If it wasn't awesome on the N64, it sucked a dick. The graphics were pretty much a wash, until the end, when Nintendo actually started utilizing the expansion pack(I was always rather shocked that they didn't recycle their SNES idea of putting an N64 version of the "FX" chip in the cartridges, to power them up. Zelda isn't an RPG - it's an action/adventure game, though I will agree that it shares some similarities.
PS1 was probably the best console ever made, originally designed as a CD addon for SNES (that's why it's controller is basically a more ergonomic SNES pad with two more shoulder buttons) it became it's own console after Sony/Nintendo stopped working together and went on to defeat the Saturn, the N64 and arguably the Dreamcast, Sony ended up having to kill it off because it was hurting PS2 sales LMAO.
Fun fact: For the Gameboy Advance version of Earthworm Jim, they used the Genesis audio rather than the SNES audio.

I go with SNES because of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat which control way better with the SNES. If I was allowed to pick up to 5 games, I would choose Ultimate MK3, MK2, Street Fighter 2, Killer Instinct, and for the hell of it Street Fighter 2 Turbo. These are my reasons to pick the SNES.

It was just that period alone the 90s, kids never had it so good, long hot summers, great music like grunge, great toys, great movies, great to shows, hell even candy and drinks like crystal Pepsi (LA Beast thanks!!). The reason why Super Nintendo's would turn yellow overtime is because Nintendo decided to put Bromine in there plastic mixtures. Bromine reacts with UV Light. The ones you would mainly see yellow are the earlier models. The later models with the sticker on it. They rarely turn yellow.

Even though the European SNES looked almost exactly the same it doesn't have "Super Famicom" written all over it, instead it just had the words "SUPER Nintendo Entertainment system" written on the controllers and that's it. How would I know? Well it could be the fact that I am European and even though I'm only 14 I do own one. (I also own a Megadrive and I like that one better)

I had a european SNES to, loved it. It's not untill much later I learned that the American SNES was that ugly. I never understood why they went with that horrid design, and what is with the purple shaded buttons and switches? I would have understood if they made the american SNES Grey, black and red, but not Grey and purple. WHY THE PURPLE?!?!?!

Donkey Kong Country 2 had an extremely solid soundtrack. Every song was great, and the sound effects were pretty spot on too. Shit, I can still remember what it sounds like to grab a balloon or DK coin.
The only thing that I may disagree on you was the beat em up games; imo, Sega wins on this one. Overall, I think that Streets of Rage tops em all in the 16 bit console wars. Still, I think Turtles in Time for the SNES came in really close. SNES may have Final Fight, but if you had the Sega CD with the Genesis, you also had Final Fight w/ 2 players and Guy w/ extra stages and an extra mode.

My favorite Beat 'em Up is still Golden Axe 3. All other Beat 'em Ups are virtually the same experience. GA3 had unique playable characters, medieval theme, magic spells, wicked branching levels, and the best music of the Genesis, second to the Sonic games. It's practically a Beat'em Up version of Gauntlet.

I grew up with the Genny so Im always going to lean towards Sega when it comes to the 16 bit battle. Games like Streets of Rage 2, Sonic, Castlevania Bloodlines, Rolling Thunder 2 and 3, Splatterhouse 2 were among some of my favorites.
That being said the Super Nintendo was still a bad ass system with a ton of great games. Turtles in Time, Sunset Riders, SMW, DKC, etc are all unforgettable.
Im glad both systems had there own unique style. I love playing both.
I love me some Sega Genesis games and Sega games in general but there is something about early Nintendo that I just can't quite live without. I mean just play Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Link to the Past, FF6, Chrono Trigger, DKC Trilogy, Kirby Super Star, Terranigma, Soul Blazer, Demon's Crest, Mega Man X, Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Earthbound; just so many monumental games that were developed so exceedingly well. No slouch on the Genesis though, it had games like: Sonic 1,2,3 & then Sonic CD, Vectorman, Rolling Thunder 2 & 3, Shinobi series, Ranger X, Thunder Force, Splatterhouse 2, Blades of Vengeance, Landstalker, Beyond Oasis, Chakan; and the Genesis was definitely the king of shoot em ups while Nintendo reigned over RPG's. A lot of great quality games. I think we all have a tendency to lean towards one or the other; but I'm just glad we have both and I'm glad a lot of ppl have respect for both sides.
the north American super Nintendo looked like a Volvo in console form, but us brits had the Japanese version (super Famicom), and that looked just as nice as the genesis/megadrive.
What we didnt have however is all the japanese games. In europe the super nintendo only had a fraction of the games while the megadrive got a shit ton.

When I was growing up I was the only kid on the block with a Sega Genesis, everyone else had a Super Nintendo. All the other kids would come over and play Mortal Kombat as it was the version that had blood. The rivalry was so fierce that even into my early adulthood I would feel pride and loyalty to Sega rise up anytime the two consoles were compared. Eventually I came to accept the fact that the SNES is the superior console, but I also feel that the Genesis has a certain gritty charm that the SNES can't match, which is why the Genesis is still my favorite console to this day.
Truth be known, I probably appreciate the Genesis more today than I ever have, seeing as how the things I now like about the Genesis the most, are actually it's flaws. It's low-fidelity audio, for example. I think I like that the most. It has a sound that is unmistakably Genesis. It's limited color-palette gives Genesis games a dark look, and it's lack of buttons keep things very simple. I know it sounds weird, but I've come to love these things.
The SNES may be the better system, but the Genesis is gritty, hardcore, and full of win.

3:35 A thing about the Power Base Converter that makes it more useful is that there is no wiring inside the thick plastic piece that hangs over the back of the Genesis. We actually took a hacksaw to ours and simply chopped it off so it would work properly in the second release of the Genesis console. I call it the Hacksaw Mod.

+Biggs Also a lot of people don't realize that the big war in Japan was PC Engine versus Famicom and then later Super Famicom...Off the top of my head I seem to remember reading that Mega Drive only had 10% market share in Japan. Sega fared much better in the US and Europe.

1: The US SNES has a boxier shape than the regular console, no idea why.
2: The Megadrive actually got six button controllers the same year the SNES launched (to coincide with MegaCD launching not the SNES).
3: The best version of Sim City was on PC ;)
4: As the Megadrive won in Europe/S America and the SNES won in N America/Japan a simple compromise to the argument is to just call it a tie and be happy with it :)

I live in Britain and collect old consoles and games. So as a retro gamer, I personally think the SNES just edges out the genesis. The main reason for this is that the SNES version of street fighter 2 looks better and killer instinct is on the SNES. Also Mario is better than sonic (Disclaimer- You all know it's true)
This was such a great video, loved the nostalgia. I never had a SNES (wish I did now lol) just a Sega (and a NES at the time) I only played on an SNES if I went to my friend or cousins house. From this video Snes did look better but Sega was so kickass! Of course Sonic was one of the best games ever (especially the second one) Oh but I did love the hell out of Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2, those were the games that made me wish I had a snes, loved Killer Instinct and the Metroid games as well. I don't remember having many "Super Nintendo vs. Sega" arguements back then but this just shows how much the 90's kicked ass, both systems were the sh*t.
On graphics, I feel like it's dependent on the situation. The SNES had better scaling, color, and transparency options; wheras Genesis has smoother animation, smoother frames, and less compressed sprites. A good example of comparing the SNES's Graphics and the Genesis's graphics is to play the SNES and Genesis versions of Earthworm Jim. You'd see that the SNES version has better colors and effects, wheras the Genesis has smoother animation and less compressed sprites.

I can at least say that Earthbound is a good game that didn't do so well in terms of sales. Most kids probably didn't have that game or was uncommon in their collections. That's probably why it wasn't mentioned.
