- It's time to provide an update on our long term Mazda 3 Carbon Edition Sedan.We've racked up.a total now of 15 thousand miles and in this video we cover our top 5 complaints, well, let's just call them nitpicks. We have got to know this Mazda 3 really well now and it continues to impress and remains a favorite to drive.
The 3 has a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine that is naturally aspirated with a six speed automatic transmission. It has 186 hp and 186 lb- ft off torque. This specific trim comes with the polymetal grey paint and red leather seating.

Remote Start explanation:
I spoke to product specialists with Mazda last week about this, because it has been good for nothing other than pissing me off.
The explanation they gave me was for security purposes in case someone tries to drive off with it.
APPARENTLY, the idiots that Mazda hired for engineering (or their superiors in charge of the project), this feature have allowed the car to be driven without the key needing to be in range.
Even more idiotic of them, the car can already detect when your key fob is in range, because that's how you unlock the door when placing your hand inside the door handle..., so it should then ALSO recognize that I'm not a thief breaking into a locked car, but the person with the key...
The way it should have been designed from the start was the engine will stay on so long as you have the key fob inside the vehicle when it it put into gear. The gearbox should be locked completely without the presence of the key. That will prevent theft, allow the car to remain on (i.e no unnecessary wear on the spark plugs and other components completely needless startups.
On another note:
The heated steering wheel was affected by the global microchip shortage. Or atleast that's my understanding.

Regarding #4, it took me a year to discover how the 'occupant comfort' actually works. If you use the seat heaters manually, you have to remember to press the AUTO button before you shut off the car. If you switch them on or off with the seat heater buttons, it UN-links them from the climate control. Even though the AUTO light is still on. Same for the heated steering wheel (I have a turbo P+).

Do you plan on changing your tire setup to a bit wider ones? I feel 225 or 235 would be nice visually as well as might help in braking better. Do share your thoughts.
my only major issue (lol) is the flimsy plexi that Mazda uses to cover the dashboard...it scratched so easily even when I used a proper microfiber cloth to clean it :(....Otherwise I'm loving my 22' sedan and it's been a real joy to own as it is my first car 🤩

From the province of Québec, Canada. I had a 2019 Mazda3 GS berline 4 cyl 2L with the 6 speed manual transmission. It had heated seats & streering wheel. 😁

Regarding knit-pick #5 at the 6:30 mark:
I have spoken to a few different people at Mazda about this (I have the 2023 Carbon Edition).
This is my biggest gripe with my car and it irritates me every time. (Also the lack of heated steering wheel).
First off, some car companies allow the engine to remain on, and some, like Mazda, do not.
Mazda claims it is for security reasons, so nobody can break in and steal your car when you use remote start.
I have a couple problems with that response.
1) The car should not be able to shift into gear without the key in proximity (otherwise what's the point of having a key if the car is fully operational without it?)
Mazda reps told me that if someone broke in to the car during a remote start, and the engine remained on, they could drive off with it... okay, the solution is to cut the engine if the door is opened without the key in proximity.
If I just need to grab something from my car, I can just unlock it from the app, I don't need to start the engine.
2) If I approach the car with the key on me, it knows the key is close because it unlocks when I put my hand through the door handle, so that should bypass the security feature of cutting off the engine.

My biggest complaint is that the automatic door lock works only 50% of the time. Took it to Mazda dealership and they told me that I have to be standing near the car for the feature to work correctly, in essence I walk too fast!
Yes. We have also noticed this from time to time. Got into the habit of just locking on a touch to the door handle. Or maybe we should all walk away slower. 😂. Thanks for commenting.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive I lock my nissan w button on interior door usually. Shut door and good to go. Never use key fob for that. Open door, Press button, get out, and shut.

Remote app start.... The car cuts off for safety/ avoiding theft. I live in the SF Ba area, and lately ppl have been getting their car stolen while letting it warm up by Remote start. So I would like for there to be a way to keep the car on but prefer it cutting off to getting stolen.
Hmm. That is interesting. I know our Volkswagen, assuming you could get into it after remote starting, would kill the engine if you attempted to put it in gear and did not have the key on you. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Lol the climate air controls part was about me (thank you for being thoughtful of your subscribers you’ve earn my subbing). I was worried that the only option available was auto which I don’t really like. The heated steering wheel option is available also on the NA engine, you just gotta get the highest trim level (well at least it’s like that in Canada. Btw do you have cylinder deactivation? If yes, do you know how to turn it off?

Thanks for watching and commenting. Yea, I think the Canadian market does get that heated steering wheel versus the US in non. turbo trims. But I could be wrong and I will double check for our upcoming Q&A episode. Mazda did discontinue cylinder deactivation I know for at least the 2022 year but it looks to be back for 2023. Again, I am not sure if it’s trim level specific. I have never been a fan of that technology but maybe Mazda took some extra time to get the bugs worked out.
I'm also in Canada looking at a 2021 GT non turbo and I think all Canadian models from 2021-2023 don't have cylinder deactivation. If it has it the 8th digit in the vin is an "M" if it doesn't have it its an "L". No way to turn it off as of yet either. I test drove a Mazda 6 and fell in love with the heated steering wheel it's kind of silly but a cold winter day it was amazing. It's probably what sold me on it, disappointing the carbon edition on the 3 doesn't have it. But all of the 6s have cylinder deactivation so now I'm looking at Mazda 3 just for long term reliability. My biggest complaints will definitely be rear seat room and no vents in the back seats and no paddle shifters. But the rest of the features are all the same or better. AWD would be awesome but I haven't found many GT's with AWD and when I do they are a lot more expensive.
Thank you for the info. How did you use the Rhino ramps on the oil change when this car is very low? I can't use mine and will need to get low profile ones.
Ha. You saw that. Basically brute force. I jammed the ramps under the wheels and they only deflect the air dam up a little without damage. Once it the car starts up the ramp there is clearance and it’s all good. Another option is to get a 1x6 or 2x6 piece of wood about 8 inches long and use that as a short bridge at the bottom of the ramp. That can also provide the needed clearance. But in general a small deflection of the spoiler is ok. It’s fairly flexible.

I have a 23 mazda3 proffered and I noticed the the auto function for the ac in the summer never settles down it’s always blowing at or near max fan speed even on longer drives. Don’t know what’s up with that because the air coming out if the vents is cold.
🤔 thanks for commenting. How hot and how long? I know ours on really hot days, or if the car is in the sun, will take 10-15 minutes to start dialing it back. I usually raise the temp higher. The temp sensor is to the right of the steering wheel and I think it takes longer to register temp there than what it actually feels like to you and your passenger.
Gonna add my 2cents. I actually like the engine shutoff, had my car almost stolen while i was preheating it so i like that if the door is opened it will just shut off, itll only be off for a few seconds anyways but its the little extra security for little less safe areas

I think there are better ways to prevent.
There is already a way for the car to detect if it's active key fob is nearby (hence why the car unlocks when you put your hand in the door handle).
If the door is somehow opened without the key fob in proximity, the engine should cut off.
If I'm just trying to grab something from my car, I can simply unlock it from my phone when I approach without the need to turn on the engine.
That dinging sounds on start up is weird. Too msny dings. Is it easy to change radio station w steering vwheel once u program stations? I only use my steering wheel for that in my current car. Are u saying that it is a pain to program or to chg channels?
Yea, that dinging sound is the seatbelt reminder chime. It’s a little annoying but at least it’s pleasant. It does get you to buckle up right away. You can use the steering wheel control to move between your programmed favorite stations. We did a full deep dive review video on the entire system. But I may do another one focused just on the radio controls. The system is always scanning and updating the available station list which is nice. To move between all available stations or to tune to a specific station takes a little effort. Thanks for the questions.
My wife has a 2012 Toyota Venza with an aftermarket remote start and it does the same thing. When you open the door it automatically shuts off. My 2022 Santa Cruz which also uses an app does not shut off.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive We questioned her remote start a couple of times and was told by different businesses that it's the factory harness that is doing this and not the remote itself and even the factory remote start would do the same thing.
@@BeyondTheTestDrive As for the SC I have the Limited, so it has the 2.5T and I am on the fence on it. It has great acceleration, and the bed has come in handy more than I thought it would. I have had it for over a year, and I still get looks and people come up talk to me wanting to know what it is. While the front is comfy and spacious the back is very tight. For me that doesn't bother me as my wife, and I are empty nesters. The thing I HATE is the DCT. Even though it is wet it is far from being smooth. I have driven the Sonata N-line which has the exact same setup, and it is completely different which leads me to believe it's a programming thing rather than the tranny itself. It has a mind of its own at times and holds revs way higher than it should even in normal mode. Would I do it again? Honestly, I don't think I would.

Suspension is good for the car it is. (Rides lower than an suv). Gas range is about 290-300mpg. The car only requires 87 octane, but I put in 89. I've noticed a difference in range based on which gas I put in as well.
I've seen the total range on a full tank anywhere from about 270-280mpg to about 310-320mpg
Does it have a digital clock display instead of analog? Need time, temp, and stock mkt. My complaints would be the small gas tank and limited rear view visibility.
Yes, you can switch it to digital in the menus. Not sure about how to get the latest on the stock market though. 😂. And you are right. Tank is small but ok for the non turbo. Turbo AWD tank is even smaller and MPGs less
any issues with the red leather seats in terms of durability? My primary concern is that they won't age as well as black seats will since I plan on driving one of these for 10+ years
Thanks for the great question. The leather is not a very light shade so it should do pretty good against dirt. We use a leather cleaner and conditioner regularly. Looking at older Mazda’s with leather they all seem to be in pretty good shape. So if you keep it clean and condition it regularly I am going to say it’s fine. There is also ceramic coating protectants that can also be used. The other issue would be buckling or sagging, especially in the drivers seat. Ours is just too new to judge that but after 20k mikes it’s just fine. We thought about aging also versus black seats, and I am not a red leather guy, but it it very attractive looking and I have no concerns with long term wear. I’ve had mine for 14k so far, I’m a baker so my car gets flour in it at times and so far the leather has held up perfectly. I also got the protective coating they put on at the Mazda dealership.
Thinking of getting the 2023 carbon edition awd. Do you regret not getting the turbo?
Thanks for the great question. No, not at all. The turbo is undoubtedly great but like all nice things it will cost you. If the base 2.5 was not as smooth and linear as it is then sure, there would be turbo longings. I think the 2.5 NA is a great engine for the price/fuel economy/performance combination. For 2023 it’s up slightly to 191 hp which is nothing to sneeze at. You do have to wind it out to get it and I will admit the 3 does not feel as quick as it’s HP numbers suggest. But it is smooth and nice to listen to. Now if I were to get a heavier CX-5 or a CX-50 then maybe I would have to maybe go turbo. . I think if Mazda had a more fuel efficient 2.0 turbo with a nice low end torque increase over the 2.5 NA that would be hard to pass up. All the best let us know what you decide. If finances are not really a factor then of course the turbo should be considered. Range is the other drawback as the fuel efficiency and fairly small tank has been a complaint of some turbo owners. I am assuming your geographic location needs the AWD? That’s a little more weight and the turbo is very good at using those rear wheels in fun backroad dry conditions.
I have the 2023 Carbon Edition Hatch with AWD. I do regret not getting the turbo, despite a slight loss of mpg. But I regret it because I'm used to v6 and v8 engines, so going to this makes me feel like I'm in a Flintstone car...
Question: in the 3rd generation mazda 3, while driving your display would show you the upcoming streets even if navigation was not on. Is there a way to get that back?
Hmmm. I have not seen that feature before.
Have your phone connected for apple carplay/android auto with location turned on. That should be enough.

Not sure the windows are even intended to squeegee as they go down. The rubber seal is a weather seal not a squeegee. Then again what would I know 🤷🏼♂️

I was considering getting this car... but I feel like the non-touch screen with center console controls may not be for me. From the reviews, people either love it or hate it.

Test drive it the knob is very usable and I think in CarPlay mode the touchscreen works. Very good and reliable with low maintenance costs

Do you use traction control or not? Why?
Hi and thanks for the question. I rarely disable traction/stability control. I am sure if you autocross you’d want to disable it and there is probably some situations in the snow where disabling it would maybe help. In most everyday driving situations would want it on for stability/safety.
Where was your car built? I heard thzt the ones built in Mexico rattle compared to the ones built in Japan.
Hi. Thanks for the question. Sedans for North America are assembled in Mexico. Hatchbacks - Japan. I am not sure if there is more or less rattle complaints between the hatchback and sedans.

The car shuts down for safety reasons. We own this vehicle, and I actually love that it does that. I usually warm up the car while I am still inside the house. I don’t want someone to somehow unlock the car and drive away.
Most vehicles, once you get in, require you to put your foot on the brake and hit Start again even though the vehicle is running. This completely prevents someone from driving away AND doesn't shut off the vehicle. This is what Mazda should have done (we have a 2022 CX-5), like our two other vehicles...
@@moeharri Aren’t you still hitting the start button again anyway? So, because their system doesn’t work the way others’ work, it’s a problem?
@@bill7481 It unnecessary to shut down the vehicle (using the starter one extra time) and it's not a safety feature to shut down the vehicle. It's not a "problem", but it's definitely worse than other manufacturers.

Since you can’t get into the car with out the proximity key on you, seems to be more safety then security? But I guess a running car out in parking lot could draw attention and maybe entice a break in? But any attempt to put it in gear is the normal engine kill for the other brands. Thanks Bart. Sparked some good conversation here. Definitely safety and security related. But the door will not unlock and open unless you have the proximity key on you anyway. Of the three cars we have had that remote start via an app, Mazda is the only one with the shutdown. Not really a problem, just different. Thanks again for commenting. For #5 I'm not so much annoyed by the fact that it shuts off, I'm annoyed at the notification on the app that said "failed".

My seat heaters have come on at full strength when turning on the climate control. Maybe it hasn’t been cold enough where you are?
You’re lucky to not have rattles. I have several with less than 4k miles.
I wish the climate control would come on when using the remote start. Why start the car remotely if I can’t heat up or cool down the car before I get in?

I have a 2022 Mazda 3 carbon edition. My biggest complaint is the terrible fuel economy and a very small tank. It's definitely not a commuter car.
What fuel economy are you getting? And what type of driving? City, highway? These are rated at around 30mpg overall and we average 32-33 in mixed driving. The 13.2 gallon tank provides well over 400 highways miles. Now the turbo is a different story. It has a 12.7 gallon tank and worse fuel economy so range is less.
@@BeyondTheTestDrive I don’t even get near that. I get about 23 mpg driving about 70% on street and 30% on freeway. I don’t really have a heavy foot either. I agree that it’s a fun to drive car, but in my opinion this tiny car has an unnecessary big engine. They should have put a 1.5 liter engine with the same hp and torque.

@@rahimovassagh4569 hi Rahi. Our cars are rated at 26 on the EPA’s city test loop which I think is an easier test than real world conditions like yours. I agree Mazda’s 2.5 could be more efficient and a smaller turbo charged engine in their lineup would be good. City driving is rough on fuel mileage and is more suited for hybrids which do well in the stop and go. It may be worth doing a dedicated highway trip just to make sure the car is functioning correctly. Here, we do a 100 mile round trip to check highway mileage.

Conversely, the EPA highway loop test is actually harder than real world conditions so most cars achieve and can do better than the EPA numbers. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

Thanks for commenting. Prior to remote starting the doors remote lock if the car is unlocked. You then need the key on you to get into the running car. I guess you could bust a window and break in. How much oil are you burning yet?
No oil burning. It only has 15k miles, it was gently broken in, and has had oil changes every 5k. I will discuss this topic in the upcoming Q&A vid.

So i live in canada.. dumb question i guess i gotta get awd not fwd.. im not sure atm..awd is heavy with higher horsepower 2.5 vs fwd lesser horsepower but lighter..hm🫠
Thanks for the comment and thoughts. How bad is your weather where you live.? The FWD with a good set of winter tires may do the trick. You can get the AWD without the turbo but I think that is where the turbo really shines. Having four wheels to put that torque down is what sets that car apart. You will see the weight and power impact on the fuel efficiency. If you get alot of snow, good winter tires will really help also with the AWD.
