Leather Craft is a balancing act when it comes to cashflow. We've found in 15 years that it's good to keep a balance between bigger orders of smaller batch products, and single custom orders. The custom orders allow us to express our artistic vision, but pay a bit less hourly. The larger orders are a great way to offer a quality product at a great price to bulk customers, but you've got to prioritize setting up an efficient system in your leather workshop to really squeeze out profit while still maintaining a great price and consistent quality for your customers ordering larger quantities of product :)
Too many people shy away from discussing money unless they are trying to talk you into buying their course on “How to make $$$!!!”. This is great content and I vote for you to keep it up.
Thanks! Usually if someone's charging you money to tell you how to make money, they're not very good at making money in the way they're teaching you in the paid course - otherwise they'd just be doing that instead of selling you the course. This is something anyone can do and has a huge, gigantic market - happy to share :)
@@Corter great video! I really enjoy watching you make stuff as you discuss different topics.
Will you share with us where you sources your magnesium stamps?
So great to see a video like this talking about the realities and business side of leather. Nobody seems to want to talk about this kind of thing.
Love the transparency from this channel. It's important!
Here's a tip for bag making: make a shallow hole somewhere on your bench to fit exactly the bottom die of your rivet setter. Then get a couple of rivet setting punches from buckleguy and voila, you can set rivets anywhere on a panel or hide of leather (because that benchtop rivet setter only has a small depth)
That buckle guy press is a godsent. I love mine. I had a bought a little wonder press first and just spent too much time trying to dial the thing. I ended up sending it back buying this cheaper press and being way happier. It just works. Sets things straight every time.
Really appreciate that you made this video. A great insight & very informative. I would like to see more of this kind of thing from you. So far I'm doing everything by hand & contemplating making the jump from hobby leather maker to small enterprise. I've had more & more requests for products (I only do small things as I dont have the "heavy equipment"). I am about to invest in equipment, but here in the UK we just dont have the access to the goodies you have in the US. I will get there. Well, I best get back to the Xmas orders I have had in. Thank you for sharing some of your business acumen its greatly appreciated.
Yeah, and the import duties play havoc with initial cost too. But, check out the Southern Leather Company [SLC] nonetheless and via email ask them about process to get things into England.
I am a beginner and I was looking to get tools from goodsjapan...the shipping cost was crazy 😅
@@kristi94 As beginner there is no need for high end tools. Develop your abilities and see what you use most, then if finances allow CAREFULLY purchase high end tools. Watch a LOT of youtube videos, talk to suppliers who do training videos on line and look at the range and their comments ... What are they using? To do what? Study before buying. One man made a leather wallet that worked just fine using a fork, ruler, and exacto knife.[if memory serves]
That was us, the video is on our channel ;)
Can you offer us the names of places to order custom cutters and stamps?
I know this is old but there are a lot of sellers on Etsy that make custom stamps
More videos on the business side of leather craft would be great!
Yes please do more business minded videos. Extremely helpful and informative.
This was really helpful. Just to talk out a bulk order like this on a financial level is so good.
This is super helpful. I’m still in the stage of taking too long on each project and not profiting as a result. This gives me some good ideas for funding my own progression by approaching local companies for promo items.
Whew, I'm glad you clarified everything in the end of the video because for a while there I thought you were leading people down the primrose path. It's important to figure everything into your pricing down to the amount of dye used for each piece, otherwise leather workers would find themselves out of business quick. Then there's the leg work finding shops to carry product and bulk orders are not common. I think AC/DC said it best. It's a long way to the top if you want to Rock N Roll.
Your honesty and insight are much appreciated. The business end of things is a huge part of this craft for those of us that are not independently wealthy. 😁
Love the more business minded videos y’all do-as a leathercrafter who’s contemplating starting their own business, videos like this are so incredibly helpful! I’m definitely looking to invest in leathercrafting hand presses but I have no idea where to go to learn more/compare and contrast the machines/how to know which one is right for me. Any suggestions on where to look to learn?
Can you share your source for the magnesium stamps?
Same question since this video was released but, our friend is avoiding to answer it
Being the smart businessman he is, he probably won't tell us and basically give free advertising to his supplier. It'd be much more beneficial for him to negotiate a referral fee or future discounts for himself. If 20 of us order a stamp from them that's easily $700 in sales to the company
Wow! It’s not THAT big a secret man… I tried to answer, but it got deleted. I’m guessing cuz of reasons stated above. U just google “magnesium leather stamps” and plenty of options come up
This is such a great video and exceptional timing for me personally.
Any suggestions on where to get the magnesium stamps?
Could you recommend somewhere that I could get those magnesium stamps?
I always enjoy the videos on the business end of leather working.
Where do you get the magnesium stamps?
Where do you get your magnesium stamps?
Excellent insights, it's always interesting to know how the background business works!
Here, you see that diversification is very important, or at least to have a "cash cow" to get the cash flow and a "star product" to advertise the business and still be creative (BCG Matrix).
That's also what makes the difference between a local american producer and an mass-producer -> Mass will win at low costs but another can take over any time (see Amazon products). As a brand, you communicate about "values", "quality", "history"... Whether true or fake, it conveys a feeling to the customer, hence he might be more appealed by an 8$ American Made chain, instead of a 2$ "Designed in USA" chain.
Where do you have your custom dyes and stamps made?
I worked as a machinist and did large quantity orders that required assembly. I tried to show some others how to do things like you described in this video. They never listened and never understood how I could assemble more in a shorter time than they did. I'd laugh and tell them, " It's an ancient Japanese secret.... eat more rice!!". They'd get so mad at when when I said that. LOL
I tried to show them several times, but they wouldn't listen, so figure it out on your own.
Thanks for the video. Can you tell us who you use to make the magnesium stamp. Thanks! Also maybe the custom split ring.
Great information! Where do you get your magnesium leather dies from?
Great video! You are spot on about how to make money in just about any craft business. Thank you!
I actually WANT to make small stuff, so win win! Excited to watch this one. Thanks! 😄
Thank you so much for this video. This content is exactly what needs to be talked about for those wanting to start a business. Thank you :)
Was at a brick wall. Thank you for helping.
What is a good site to get a custom stamp cutout from and magnesium stamp from?
Please more of these videos. There are lots of how to make a bag but not a lot of how to make money with leathercraft
thanks for this video, I found it really informative as I'm struggling to make a profit with my handmade business. This is a great idea starter to keep me encouraged and find ways to be more productive
Business videos are good :)
Feel free to do more of them
It's very hard to sell in this economy. I picked a bad time to start selling. But I did have a bazzar that did make some money. Spring clip wallets were my best seller.
More videos like this please!
This was a great, informative video. I am just starting in the leather working Hobbie, because honestly that is what it is for me at this point in time but videos like this help me understand where I could take this hobby in the future. Now, I'm not sure how much of your business you care to share but I think a video about how you figured out where to have some of your tools of the trade made and a tutorial on the backend of that process would be great. I am atech dummy so when it comes to computers and doing custom designs, I'm pretty much lost but something to help guide me and others in a similar struggle would be so appreciated. Cheers, I honestly have learned so much in rhe short time I've been watching your videos.
A wealth of information for us new guys! where is a good place to get cutting dies and the stamps that go with them? keep up the great work guys, your inspiration, creativity and craftsmanship is greatly appreciated!
Excellent video! Would love to see more of these! 🙌🏻
Excellent video having a background in foundery work in most ways it is very similar on these large run smaller items. The cost of the tooling can easily be amortized into the final product cost as was our casting pattern costs
You are sofa king awesome!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! ❤️
You are creating your own competition
Love this style video! Feel free to make similar videos in the future, because I found this very helpful and educational!
I'm curious as to what companies you have found that are reliable and affordable to have the custom made Mg press dies made? Thanks for the straight talk and great video :)
Great detailing! Thank you. One day I need to pick up a press!
Very good idea to all the 🌎.
I have one of these keychains. Lasts forever.
this is such an oddly perfect video im just about to make batch of key rings
hey there, i had a question, what leather do you use from buckle guy, the vachetta or the tooling? for your wallets and stuff
Love the business videos
so 4x20=80-10=70-20=50-3.40=46.60 profit. Plus you have to ship them.I hope they pay shipping as well.
Can you guys recommend a good spot to get custom dies made that aren't crazy expensive?
Policy customs
Love your channel...😎
Me too. I ❤ leather.
Where can I buy custom stamps like that?
So where did you get the stamp made?
Once again thank for the inside information at the end of the business, it's very helpful, but where do you get you dye cut and stamp made. Do I have to check in the state I live in to find it for myself. please advices us on that, and the cost for a small one to a bigger on like let say a bag. keep the video coming. thank you.
For a small piece, medium piece and a large piece, what is your price breakdown.
This video leaves me with more questions than answers, where can I get customized split rings made, where do you get custom dies made? If you're going to make a video like this you need to link where all the parts come from not just those from your sponsor....
Our sponsor makes our custom split rings tho haha. We've been working with them for 10 years before working with them in a sponsor form, we have a whole video about it :)
@@Corter Ah I see the Custom Manufacturing link at the bottom of their website, I sent them an email. Thank you!
Another great video sir. The amount of detail you provide is awesome.
May I ask what companies made the cutting die and stamp?
I enjoy these videos that pertain to the business side of things. I'm just a hobbyist but in case it turns into something more it's good info to have.
I'd be curious where you get your stamps from. I have an design idea I'd like to try, but no idea where to buy them.
Love these videos, great perspective. I'd also like to know where to get magnesium stamps.
Can you share where you got your custom split rings?
More business minded videos!!! Great vid 👍
Love the information. Would like to learn more about the business side of the craft.
Excellent video I’ve learned a lot. I’d love to try it. Please keep the videos coming
I guess I'll make some keychains and see what happens. Imagine you could do something similar with earrings.
Love the video, I have had a very hard time however finding magnesium stamps.
It’s business time. Very helpful. Do more.
This was great! More please!
Great actionable info, thanks Corter Leather!
thank u for sharing that
pls make more videos like that
Hi Corter Leather. I know many others have asked, will you share you stamp maker please? I don't understand how to properly size the artwork from the BG die you are using to send to a maker if I have to source my own.
Thanks for all the sweet videos!
Do you have any suggestions for a company that can make the stamps?
What about a laser cutter?
Where do you recommend getting magnesium stamps from?
Great video thanks for posting!
How do you factor in the cost of the custom die? You menioned the cost of leather, rivets, and split rings, but do you charge a set up front fee to get the custom die made for each order?
I scanned through the comments, but never saw a response to it. Who do you use for your magnesium stamps? I've had some issues with etsy, so prefer to go another route unless referred to them. Thanks!
Thank you!! I am so interested. I just started working with leather. How do I start selling my brand? How do make a brand.
Where do we get the custom rings?
Where did you get your custom die cutters from? The best i can find are ones made on etsy, which im not too fond of.
Policy customs. Very active on FB
Have you tried using a 3D Printer to make stamps? Should work for a small run at least.
Hey, ive seen your leather piping video. But i really want to make a bag that is inspired to the LV Pochette Kassak bag, which requires 360 degrees leather piping. I was wondering how you would tackles this problem
Awesome info.
Appreciate your sharing.
What a great video, thank you!
The video is very appreciated!
You didn't count your time to acquire the stamps or the depreciated cost of the tooling. Those hidden cost are going to change the actual time per hour cost.
I do, in the end I talk about how you're not going to be making $100 an hour 8 hours a day every day because you've got to take into account all of the back end work you're not getting paid for. However I think depreciation is kind of a moot point on a $200 press that will set enough rivets to make you a million dollars in profit before it even thinks of giving up the ghost :)
Appreciate it! Yes do more.
How much does the four ton clicker cost and how thick of leather will it cut?
who did you go too for the clicker die and stamp
Love this video style!
Where do you get your dice and stamped made? I am extremely interested in trying this
I want to make a bunch of these for my gender reveal half team boy half team girl and give them away as favors. Question is where should I buy all this stuff from!! I’m going to be new but I know with all my carpentry skills it’s just another material please help
I would think that you would need to sell for more like 60 percent profit. Like $5 per. Or so.
You made a “Giant Leather Wallet (our biggest ever) a while back. Will you ever release the pattern. I know it was on a utube from your previous patron. Is there any way to get it?
Where can I order the magnesium click dies?
Thank you for this
More business videos please!
Who makes the embossing dies?
I thought it was a very relevant topic covered
I like business minded videos :)
Could you get $%.00 instead of $4.00?
