      The "Parelkandij" refers to the sugar pearls. The cake/cookie itself is called "ontbijtkoek" which directly translates to "breakfast cookie" it tasted dry, because usually when we Dutch people eat it, we spread butter on top. Also the "Rinse" in "Rinse Appelstroop" refers to the area where the recipe is from. Hope this was informative :)

      Yeah, the massive ones you get for €0.50 or €1 at markets are great. You can smell them from a mile away.
      If you're ever at a Dutch market again and there's a fish stand, ask for "Kibbeling" and be amazed...

    Fun fact, the 'spijs' in the filled speculaas is made almost the same way as anko is made. Of course the almonds are not cooked in opposite of the azuki beans, but they are meshed together like the azuki beans and also sugar is added to sweeten.

    I love your take on trying foreign treats! Some things to add to your understanding. The parelsuiker refers to the sugar grains on top of the breakfastcake. You should eat it with some good butter on it and can be serverved for breakfast or with tea, coffee or hot chocalat later in the day. The spiceynes of all speculaas products differ by brand. When home baking, please feel free to be more generous with the spicing! The speculaas cake is traditionally served at coffee time in winter, during december celebrations. Stroopwafels are cookies, a compagnon of coffee, tea or hot chocolat, not breakfast or dessert (we do not regularly eat baked goods for dessert, here, more puddings of yoghurt). Applestroop is very concentrated applejuice. In the most southern province of the Netherlands (Limburg) they put it on everything, like toast with sunny side up eggs, with or without bacon, or in sandwiches with old Gouda cheese

      Stroopwafels are indeed good warm, but I prefer them crispy myself. The hot tea/coffee trick makes the waffles soft and moist, which some people like a lot, but I prefer freshly baked or microwaved.

      Agreed fresh ones made are the best, used to get them on the Saturday market in town. I live in Thailand now and buy stroopwafels at Schiphol airport, my kids love 'm. I usually put them for 5 to 10 seconds in the microwave, it makes them nice and soft and brings out the flavour a bit more.

    My Dutch coworker taught me how to make stroopwafels and even bought me a wafel maker. It isn’t actually two wafels stuck together. It is one wafel sliced through the middle. You need to do it quickly while they are super hot. Burnt fingers are a small sacrifice for these delicious cookies. Or you can just buy them already made.

    • @jhcfight
      @jhcfight 5 років тому +3

    You really need to put the stroopwaffels over a hot cup of tea. It heats up the caramel and makes it gooey and then when you dip it into the tea it adds a bit of sweetness. Best way to enjoy. (You can just place it lightly over the top of a cup that is a good size.)

    Did browse the comments a bit but didn't see anyone explaining the two Speculaas. The first one you tried is the traditional one, the second one came years later and is actually called " Gevulde Speculaas" (Filled Speculaas). It uses the same spices but a different dough and the filling is an Almond/sugar/egg paste we call "Spijs"

    Put “stroopwafels” in the microwave for a minute on 600 w then let it cool down for like 15 seconds. It’ll taste even better. Trust me! Try find the good numbers for you, maybe it’ll be better if you do it for 30 seconds for example. I do it like this and it’s delicious
    Edit: It depends on the brand you use!!! I use “kanjers” it’s Dutch so first try put it in the microwave for a short time and if it isn’t that crispy and warm then try it for a longer time or higher temperatures!

    Yes, actually, that's how I'd describe it as well! :) It's true - there's a cookie named speculaas, which is the one you tried with the almonds on the back, but then we also have something we call "filled speculaas", which is the cake type treat you see on the box. It's speculaas but just sort of cake-like and with almond paste in-between O;

      Or use huge loads of sprinkles of course. Why do you think 'fat' means great in Dutch? Fat video, dude!

    Oooh!!! Stroopwaffles!
    Love it! The syrup consistency so thick, it's chewy, which make me love it more. Perfect match with the pair of waffles (or is it waffer?)

    Good Video guys! Next time you try the stroopwafels, get a cup of hot coffee or English tea, then rest the stroopwafel over the cup resting it on the rim. The steam from your coffee gently heats the stroopwafel and slightly melts the caramel. Nibble and sip. It's delicious!

    Stroop waffles are very, very addictive. You should try warming them over a mug of hot coffee, that will really change the texture and experience!

    appelstroop on bread with a layer of cheese on top is really nice breakfast as well :)
    If you go to a market on saturday. You can get huge freshly made Stroopwafels. they're soft, still warm and the syrup is still a bit runny.

    Love your video's. Stroop is pronounced like strope.
    The one that is the Peijnenburgh brand is called "ontbijtkoek" (breakfast cake) and this one is the parelkandij (pearl candy) flavour. Ontbijkoek tastes best with a thick layer of good quality butter!! The appelstroop has a huge amount of iron in it. I always buy that if I'm back home since I don't live in The Netherlands now. I love the taste and it's very healthy.
    Also buy hagelslag (the chocolate sprinkles) and calve pindakaas (best peanut butter in the world ;-) )

      Yes! Every time I hear it pronounced as 'strupe' it grates on my ears LOL - but virtually all mispronounce it this way (other than Dutch - obviously - and Germans, where double-o is pronounced similarly...like in U-Boot)

      Actually its surprisingly easy to make. Just takes a lot of time. Juice a bunch of apples (a lot, like 2 shoppingbags or something). Boil the juice until it looks like appelstroop (regularly take out a spoon to see how thick it gets when its cold). Put in a jar, it lasts for a long time. And no added anything! Also works with pears and is even more delicious :)

      @@barbaravanderwaarde And RINSE means moderately sour. Add pears to the apples for appelperenstroop (りんごと梨 シロップ). Use pears only and call it perenstroop (梨シロップ).
      Sour, sweet or mixed apples will get you very different appelstroops (りんご シロップ).Try and taste which types you like best. Good luck, it's fun. はい

    The speculaas cookies you ate are regular supermarkt ones. If you get them from a real baker they are more cinnamony/spiced and really delicious 😋

  • @j0j0748

    They should've put speculoos in there. It's like a spreadable gingerbread paste to put on bread. My favorite is the crunchy version. Another good one is Bolletje Schuddebuikjes. Little (almost rabbit dropping like) "cookies" that also taste of speculaas and you can also put it on bread with some butter. En ja, ik heb ook ontzettende honger gekregen. Best wishes to both of you!
    Ps: a lot of people prefer the "breakfast cake" (haha love that name) with butter because of the dryness, I would definitely recommend it!
    Pps: Some people eat the "appelstroop" with a slice of cheese on top on bread. It's surprisingly tasty!

    And sometimes we eat the breakfast cake or the speculaas (the first one) on buttered bread as well. Mostly we don't use the breakfast cake with kandij though like the one you tried.
